Sziasztok!
Tartok tőle, hogy Magyarországon nem túl sokan ismernek még benneteket, pedig már jó ideje tépitek a húrokat. Ezért arra kérlek, meséljetek kicsit a kezdetekről. Mikor és miért, kinek a hatására ragadtatok hangszert, mikor alakult a banda s milyen célokat tűztetek magatok elé a kezdetekkor.
Mióta az eszemet tudom, zenét hallgatok, és a nővérem zongorájával is elszórakoztam néha, de 15 éves koromban volt az, hogy megkaptam az első basszusgitárom és ténylegesen elkezdtem bandákban játszani. Akkor, mint a legtöbb ember, én is dobolni akartam, de természetesen az a pozíció már foglalt volt. A gitár szóba sem jöhetett, ahhoz túl nagyok voltak a kezeim, így a basszusgitár volt a legtermészetesebb választás, amit egyetlen egyszer sem bántam meg. Ezt követően rengeteg bandában játszottam, míg végül 1998-ban megalapítottuk a Mustasch-t. Az összes korábbi bandával próbáltunk igazodni a trendekhez és átvenni azt, amit mások játszottak, ez pedig természetesen egyáltalán nem volt működőképes. A Mustasch mottója így az lett, hogy soha ne figyeljünk mások tanácsára vagy kritikájára, bármi is az. Csak játsszuk amit szeretünk játszani – kötöttségek nélkül. Bár az elképzelés sikeresnek bizonyult, egészen 2008-ig kellett várni arra, hogy megéljünk csak a Mustasch-ból. Így most magasabbra kell állítani a mércét…
Mit tartotok eddigi pályafutásotok legnagyobb sikerének?
A 2007-es album, a „Latest Version of the Truth”, ami nem csak a svéd Grammy-t nyerte meg a Legjobb Hard Rock kategóriában, de a nagysikerű első kislemezzel, a „Double Nature”-el egyúttal feltette a Mustasch-t a fősodrú irányzatok térképére is.
Mesélnél a legfurább koncertélményetekről? Mi volt az eddigi legnagyobb turné-, vagy koncertélményetek? Ha ti választhatnátok turnépartnert, kiket választanátok az ikonjaitok közül, kiket az ifjabb bandák közül és kiket, ha a stílusban szerintetek leginkább hozzátok illő bandával kéne színpadra állnotok?
2003-ban a Motörhead vendégzenekaraként a német turnéjukon: rettentő élvezetes, de szürreális! A legjobb élményem viszont 2002-es, akkoriban legnagyobb svéd fesztiválon volt. Kifejezetten zöldfülűek voltunk akkoriban és nem valami híresek. Délben játszottunk és úgy nagyjából ezer fős közönségre számítottunk – holtsápadtak lettünk az izgalomtól mikor kinéztünk és felfogtuk, hogy több mint 12.000 ember jött el. Óriási David Bowie rajongó vagyok, így ha lenne egy időgépem, visszamennék a 70-es évek elejére és velük turnéznék és nézném ahogy a basszusgitáros példaképem, Trevor Bolder teszi a dolgát. Meg talán beugranék pár koncertre a Black Sabbath-tal és Geezer Butlerrel.
Mennyire könnyen állt össze az új anyag? Miért csak kilenc dal van a lemezen? Minden kész nóta felkerült a CD-re?
Kilenc dal több mint elég. Ralf is meg én is túl vagyunk már a 45-ön, megszoktuk, hogy bakeliteket hallgatunk fiatal korunk óta. Akkoriban az átlagos album 40 perces volt, ami ideális. Aztán jöttek a CD-k a 74 perces kapacitásukkal, és mindegyik banda megpróbálta telenyomni őket amennyire csak tudta. Vegyük például a Soundgarden „Superunknown” albumát. Emlékszel egyáltalán az utolsó négy dalra? Nem jó. Aztán hasonlítsd össze a Black Sabbath korai felvételeivel: átlag nyolc dal. Nagyon jó!
Kinek a műve az egyszerűnek ható, mégis látványos artwork, mely szerintem magasan a legjobb az eddigi borítóitok közül?
Egyetértek – egyáltalán nem rossz! Az Art Directorunk, Andreas Fästader csinálta Johan Carlénnel, a fotósunkkal karöltve.
Mesélj, hogyan zajlik nálatok a zeneszerzés! Ki(k) a fő dalgyáros(ok)?
Ralf végzi a dalírás kb. 90%-át a többit pedig David. Van, hogy Ralf teljesen kidolgozott dalokkal áll elő minden hangszerre külön ötletekkel. De gyakran mind besegítünk az anyag összerakásába próbák közben – különböző irányokból közelítve meg, oda-vissza, amíg nem kapunk valami jót.
Két bivaly erős, fogós nótával nyitjátok a lemezt, első hallásra bárkiben felmerülhetne, hogy hamar ellövitek a puskaporotokat. Szerencsére kiváló a többi dal is. Mennyire volt célzott, tudatos e nyitópáros összeállítása?
Igen. Mindig a legjobb dalaidat tedd előre, azonban ez soha, semmilyen esetben se rombolja az album összhatását.
Némiképp mintha tisztult, finomodott volna a hangzásotok, fülbemászó dallamaitok még rádióbarátabbak lettek, emellett hangsúlyosabb szerepet kaptak az underground jegyek is, a belassult, doomos és groovos témák. Volt ebben tudatosság, vagy így kúsztak ki a témák az ujjaitok alól? Melyik a csapat közös kedvence a lemezen?
Mint már korábban említettem, a saját ízlésünk szerint játszunk, így igen, szándékos volt. Az én kedvencem az „All My Life”, de szerintem a bandáé átlagban az „I Hate to Dance”, a szokásos Mustasch-hangzáshoz viszonyított abnormalitása miatt.
Meglehetősen sok szimfonikus elemet használtok az új dalokban, viszont egészen másképp, mint az az utóbbi években bevett a rock/metal mezőnyben. Jó példa erre a The Mauler málházását csodásan ellenpontozó vonósjáték. Előre megterveztétek a lemez hangszerelését vagy menet közben dalonként alakult így?
Ez menet közben jött a stúdióban, és a koproducerünk, Gustav Ydenus volt, aki a húros és kürtös részeket megírta.
Mit gondoltok van esély arra, hogy a Thank You For The Demont Magyarországon vagy legalább Közép-Európában elő tudjátok adni élőben is? Hová szeretnétek a leginkább eljutni egy turné keretében?
Attól tartok, hogy a közeljövőben semmiképp. Jelenleg a németországi turnét és növekedést szeretnénk folytatni, ahol már megvetettük a lábunkat. Összességében viszont alig számít, hogy hol turnézol amíg a hallgatóság értékeli a zenédet.
Gondolom, a világ számtalan pontjáról kaptok visszajelzéseket rajongóktól. Honnan jönnek a legkülönlegesebb, vagy legfanatikusabb megnyilvánulások? Elmesélnél egy ilyet?
Nem tudom, hogy fanatikusnak nevezhetem-e őket, de van pár visszatérőnk Svédországban és Németországban is, akik folyamatosan utaznak, és a koncertek és turnék felén ott vannak, mindig az első sorban!

Hi! I’m afraid that only a handful of people know about you here in Hungary, even though you are in the business for quite a while now. This is why I want to ask you to tell us a bit about the beginning. When, why and who made you grab an instrument, when was the band formed and what sort of goals did you have at first?
I´ve listened to music as long as I can remember and at the same time fooling around with my sister´s piano, but it wasn´t until I was fifteen that I got my first bass and started playing in a band for real. And as most people, I wanted to play the drums but that position was already spoken for, of course. Guitar was out of the question because of my way too big hands, so bass was the natural choice and I haven´t regretted it one second. After that I played in lots of bands until we eventually formed the band Mustasch in 1998. In all the bands before we tried to adapt to trends and taking in what other people played, which of course didn´t work out at all. So the motto for Mustasch was to not listening to anyone´s advice or criticism regardless. Just play what you what you enjoy playing – no compromises. Although that theory was proven successful, it wasn´t until 2008 we could live solely off Mustasch. So now we have to set a higher goal…
What do you consider the biggest success of your career so far?
The album “Latest Version Of The Truth” from 2007, which not only won a Swedish Grammy for Best Hard Rock, but also put Mustasch on the mainstream-map with its first single and big hit “Double Nature”.
Would you tell us about your strangest concert experience? What was your greatest tour or concert experience so far? If you could pick your tour partners, who would they be from your idols; from younger bands; and from bands that you consider to be the best match in the genre?
Supporting Motörhead on their German tour in 2003: great fun but surreal! The best experience, however, was in 2002 playing the biggest festival in Sweden at the time. We were quite green back then and not particularily famous. We played at noon and expected maybe up to a thousand people in the audience – we got so nervous that we looked like we were corps-painted after realizing that over 12 000 had shown up! I´m a huge David Bowie-fan, so if I had a time machine, I would go back to the early ‘70s and touring with them, watching my bass player idol Trevor Bolder do his thing. And maybe catch a few shows with Black Sabbath and Geezer Butler.
Was it easy to create the new material? Why are there only nine songs? Did you put all of the songs on the disc?
Nine songs is more than enough. Ralf and I are over 45 years old, so we were used to listen only to vinyl when we were young. And in those days the average record time was about 40 minutes, which is ideal. When the CD came with its max-length of 74 minutes, all the bands tried to fill them as much as they could. Take Soundgarden´s album “Superunknown” for example. Do you even remember the last four songs? Not good. And then compare Black Sabbath´s early records: 8 songs in average. Very good!
Who made that deceptively simple yet spectacular artwork – which I consider to be by far the best from your album covers so far?
I agree – not bad at all! Art director Andreas Fästader made it together with photographer Johan Carlén.
Tell us about how you make music! Who is/are the main composer(s)?
Ralf does around 90% of the writing and David does the rest. Ralf sometimes deliver fully arranged songs even with ideas on how every instrument should/could play. But often we all participate putting the material together while we rehearse – trying different approaches back and forth until we get something good.
The album opens with two ridiculously strong songs, those hearing it for the first time may think that you blow your load too early. Fortunately the rest of the songs are just as great. Was the setup of this opening pair intended, planned?
Yes. Always put the best songs first, although it mustn´t in any way compromise the album´s constitution as a whole.
It seems as if your sound got more refined, your catchy tunes became more radio friendly and also the underground element became more prominent, those slow, those slow, groovy themes. Was this intended or you just happened to play it this way? Which is the band favorite on the disc?
As I mentioned earlier, we only play what we like ourselves, so yes, that was intended. My favorite is “All My Life”, but I think the band´s average favorite is “I Hate To Dance” due to its abnormal style compared to the regular Mustasch sound.
You have used quite a number of symphonic elements in your new songs, but in a totally different way that became a standard in the rock/metal genre in the past few years. A fine example would be the string play of ‘The Mauler’ which perfectly balances its sluggishness. Did you pre-plan the score for the album or these happened while you made the songs?
That happened in the studio on the fly, and it was co-producer Gustav Ydenius who wrote the strings and horn elements.
What do you say; is there a possibility for a live performance of Thank You for the Demon in Hungary or at least in Eastern Europe? Where would you like to tour the most?
Not in the near future, I´m afraid. Right now I´d like to continue touring and growing in Germany, where we have managed to establish a foothold. But altogether it doesn´t really matter where you tour as long as the audience appreciate your music.
Surely you get tons feedback from fans across the world. Where do the most extraordinary or fanatical ones come from? Would you tell us one of these?
I´m not sure I´d l call them fanatics, but we do have some regulars in both Sweden and Germany who travel around and visits like half of the shows on the tour, and they are always in the front row!
