Ruthless Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

Srácok, a Ruthless 1982-ben alakult, tehát nagyjából egy időben kezdtétek a Slayerrel, a Metallica-val, a Savage Grace-szel, az Armored Sainttel vagy az Abattoirral, hogyan emlékeztek vissza azokra a régi időkre?

Helló, ez itt Kenny McGee

Wow!

A kezdeti időkben rögzítettetek demókat kiadókeresés illetve a zenekar népszerűsítésének, promotálása céljából?

Felvettük a „Metal Without Mercy”-t a hollywoodi Track Records stúdióban.

Esetleg a Metal Without Mercy Ep előzetese, felvezetése volt?

Miért került sor a tagcserékre?

A Discipline Of Steel a legkevésbé kedvenc albumom.

Ezután az Axe Killer Records megkért minket a Discipline Of Steel album felvételére.

Mennyit tudtatok koncertezni akkoriban? Általában nyitózenekar voltatok vagy voltak önálló bulijaitok is?

A headline koncertek leginkább dél-nyugat USA-ban mentek.

Két dal erről az anyagról felkerült a Metal Without Mery első hivatalos cd-s kiadására 2009-ben, igaz?

Igen, 2009-ben újrakiadtuk a „Metal w/o Mercy”-t Olaszországban a My Graveyard Productions kiadóval.

Mi vezetett végül a banda feloszlásához?

2008-ban meghívást kaptunk a németországi „Keep It True Festival”-on való fellépésre, és vittük Jimmy Durkin gitárost aki korábban a Dark Angellel zenélt. Nyitottunk pár koncertet a Saxon, Accept & Paul Dianno bandáknak. Elkezdtünk zenéket is írni.

Mikor álltatok neki dolgozni a friss albumon?

Elégedettek lettetek a végeredménnyel?

Meg vagyunk elégedve a „THEY RISE” anyaggal, úgy érezzük ott folytatjuk ahol 1989-ben abbahagytuk.

Mit mond a zenekar neve a ma metal rajongójának?

ENGLISH VERSION:

Guys, Ruthless was founded in 1982, so you have started about the same time as Slayer, Metallica, Savage Grace, Armored Saint or Abattoir. How do you look back on those olden days?

Hello, this is Kenny McGee

Wow! Looking back doing shows with all those bands were amazing times! I think that at that time we had no idea what was actually happening. But, all these bands have become bands that have done great over the years. I remember doing shows with Slayer and one show we accidentally loaded up all of their guitars…. Kerry King came to me and said hey’ I think you guys grabbed our guitars… I totally apologized and he was very cool & nice about it… Honest mistake!!! But ya, those were some great times!!!

Have you recorded demos in the first years to send to a publisher or to promote the band?

We did do a demo back in 1981.. But, we never did much with it… Except in 2012 we Reissued  ” Metal Without Mercy”+ 6 on FNA Records that has our very first demo on it…we actually were playing a club called Radio City in Anaheim ,Ca….and a guy by the name of Dave Richards was in the audience…He said he loved our show and would like to talk to us…. He was the man behind Iron Works Records…. He Put us in the Studio with Bill Metoyer, he had just finished up with Slayers first album the week before. We recorded ” Metal Without Mercy” album @ Track Records in Hollywood,Ca. It was released on Iron Works Records in 1982.

Your first issue was The Fever / Mass Killer single, what did you expect from this material? Was it maybe the prelude to the Metal Without Mercy Ep?

Actually „Mass Killer & The Fever” We’re on the MWM EP. They were not singles first…

How much success did the Ep bring you then? Did it help in gaining audience and fans, and getting into the underground scene?

The EP did a lot for us!! It built a great following for us… More and more metal heads starting coming to our shows. It was amazing! We were getting airplay on metal radio shows across the USA.

Both materials came out under the Iron Works label, were you guys the first contract for them? Did any bigger and more known labels show interest in the band?

Iron Works Records was only responsible for that EP. We only signed for that EP only. We never really even thought about going to a bigger label at the time. We just wanted to play live and have fun. We never were in this for money. We were just young kids doing what we loved.

After publishing the Ep some changes in the line-up were made: Bryan Scott came instead of drummer Todd Billings, and Steve Tzz played instead of guitarist Rollen Legman. Did these guys play in other bands before? Why did the changes happen?

Well, unfortunately for the band member changes, that happened because, there were some musical differences and some irresponsibility issues with the old members…. I’m not really sure what other bands they were in before Ruthless…

Your debut album, Discipline Of Steel came out in 1986, and has become a cultic piece of music. Would you tell us about it?

Discipline Of Steel was my least favorite album. But, it sold very well! That album was going in a very different direction. Me and Sammy were not real happy with the music. There are some great songs on there… Don’t get me wrong! But, not where we really wanted to go musically. It was more commercial sounding and more like Big Hair Band stuff.. Lol

The album came out under the Axe Killer label. How did you end up with them and why did you leave Iron Works?

We were approached by Axe Killer Records to license Metal w/o Mercy EP in other Countries. Which we did in Europe, and licensed to Banzia Records in Canada. Then Axe Killer Records asked us to record Discipline Of Steel Album. Like I said Iron Works was a one EP Deal.

How often did you give live shows back then? Were you mostly a support band or did you have your own shows?

We were doing Headline shows mostly in Southwestern USA. We did do a few opening shows with Savage Grace, Slayer, Dark Angel, Lizzy Bordon….

I have read that you have had started working on a second album that would have had to come out in 1989. How different did you guys want it from Discipline Of Steel?

Yes, We did go in and record a couple Demo ideas in 1989 with a new drummer and Guitarist. We wanted to record more stuff like the ” Metal w/o Mercy” Style. But, we could not Sustain Ruthless at that time.. We were frustrated, no Label Support and it was time to move on! That’s why we called it quits then.

Two songs from this disc have made it to the 2009 official CD edition of Metal Without Mercy, right?

Yes, in 2009 we reissued „Metal w/o Mercy” to My Graveyard productions in Italy. It had the two Bonus Tracks ” Winds Of War” & „White Death” we used BG on Drums.

What did eventually lead to the end of the band?

In 1989 IT WAS TIME TO MOVE ON!!! Too many musical differences & the band was not agreeing on a lot of issues…. Hmmmm… Isn’t that what happens with all bands that break up?

Your reunion came in 2008, but you have only came out with new material this year. What happened in these past seven years, and what motivated you to come back?

In 2008 we were invited to play „Keep It True Festival” in Germany we recruited Jimmy Durkin formally of Dark Angel as second guitarist. We also did some shows opening for Saxon, Accept & Paul Dianno. We did start doing new writing at the time. But, once again we couldn’t sustain the line up to move forward. I thought Ruthless Was over Again! But, Lucky For Us we came across Dave Watson on Guitar and Jason Van Slyke on Drums! And we struck magic! We started writing together in 2013. The motivation was because we love playing Metal!!!

Only singer Sammy DeJohn and guitarist Ken McGee are still in the band, what do the other original members do nowadays? Are they still making music or have they quit metal?

Most of the old members are out of touch.. We don’t know where they went. No contact. Except Todd Billings our first Drummer. He still comes to our shows and supports us!

When did you start working on the new album? Are they brand new songs or have you blew off the dust of earlier, unpublished songs?

The new songs are all just new songs… Nothing old!  We actually started writing with Jimmy Durkin.  ” Laceration” & ” Systematic Terror” were co written with Jimmy! The rest were just new.

Are you happy with the results?

We are pleased with the Results of ” THEY RISE”  we feel we left off where we broke up in 1989.

The album came out under Pure Steel Records, how many more albums are in the contract?

We are Super happy to be on Pure Steel Label! They have been very supportive. We are gonna do 2-more albums with them. We are already in the writing process for next album!

I know this album has only came out, but will it have a sequel?

There will be a sequel!!!

Dou you guys think there’s a demand for bands like yours nowadays? What do you have to say for today’s metal fans?

I know that there is a lot of metal heads that love classic metal! I’m not sure how big of a demand there is…. And we really don’t care!!! We are just writing music that we love. There are so many different genres of metal today it hard to keep up with it all. We will just keep writing and playing what comes naturally to us. We will never try to be something else…

Thank you for the interview, and all the best in the future!

Thank You !!!!
