The Dagger Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

Fred Estby, Tobias Cristiansson, David Blomqvist, Jani Kataja. Ezekre a nevekre mindenki felkapja a fejét. Mi is ez a The Dagger, hogyan jött össze a csapat?

A The Daggert 2009-ben alapítottam Freddel.

Mikor gondoltál először arra, hogy jó lenne a ’70-es ’80-as évek zenéjét játszani?

A dalokat több hangban is felvettük.

Ebből négy felkerült a debüt albumra. Utáljuk a modern hangzást. Inkább felvenném az egészet kazettás magnóval minthogy az évezredre annyira jellemző tömörített „digitális” hangzásunk legyen.

Ezután nemsokára a Century Media kiadóhoz szerződtetek. Hogyan fogadták a klasszikus rock zenéteket?

Leginkább mire törekedtetek a dalok felvételénél?

Most viszont visszakanyarodtatok és örömmel játszátok a nagyszerű retro metalt!

Sosem néztük merről fúj a szél!

ENGLISH VERSION:

Fred Estby, Tobias Cristansson, David Blomqvist, Jani Kataja. These are the kind of names that everyone notices. You have formed in 2009 and have created music that was not characteristic of you before. What is “The Dagger” exactly and how did you find each other?

The dagger was formed by me and Fred in 2009. We thought it would be great to play classic hard rock. We’ve always been fans of rainbow, UFO and scorpions but to play this music is very different. We were really looking for this “authentic” sound. We do believe that the production on the albums nowadays sound to stiff and “arfificial”! In 2014, the drums sounds almost like “airbags” and that is fucking horrible. We wanted to form a band that have quality songs with a lot of melody and ‘to the point-structure’. We skipped all the long and boring intros and focused on short and catchy songs with much twin guitar-leads.

I have played with Fred since 1988 and Tobias joined dismember in 2006 so he was the first choice as the bassplayer. He’s an excellent bassist and a true hardrocker! Fred heard a song with Jani Kataja’s old band sideburn and said: “listen what a bloody good singer!” Jani joined us in late 2012. Fred and I played death metal for more than two decades but we don’t turn our back at death metal and say, “now we’ve grown up and play this instead”, that would be very stupid. So that is NOT the case.

When was the first time you thought it would be good to play 70’s and 80’s music? How different is it to play in this style?

As a listener you’ve always been a bit curious what it’s like to play real hard rock. I grew up with iron maiden, accept and rainbow. When you play death metal you don’t have to write the melody for the vocals, completely different sound (with less distortion on the guitars obviously) and Fred doesn’t need to hit the snare like a builder hits the roof with a hammer anymore…

Since we’ve always liked old hard rock and heavy metal it felt normal to play it anyway. The biggest challange was not to wtite the riffs, it was to have simple riffs and let the vocals do the melody instead. If there’s a melody that’s not strong enough, you’ll lose the song’s essence. We also wrote songs in more than one key. A and G works perfectly to, you know.

Last year you have released a 7’’ record. What were the reviews like for those two songs, how much did it enlarge your self confidence?

There was immediatly great response and interest when it was released. It was very important for us to release that 7”. People like it a lot which is great. One of the reasons for that, I guess, is the very “rough” production on the song “dark cloud”. A bit different from other productions from nowadays… It was great fun to record our first five-track demo from 2011. Four of those songs made it to the debutalbum. We really hate modern sound. I would rather record a whole album with a fucking taperecorder than having the highly compressed and “digital” sound that is typical for 2000!

Not long after that you have contracted with Century Media. How did they respond to these classic rock songs? Were they happy that you do this? Was it easy to come to terms with them according to your own expectations?

Yes, that’s why they signed us. They liked the songs and our attitude with the whole thing. And we’re glad they haven’t done to much “name-dropping”.. If people know our past and ex-bands, that’s great. If they don’t, it’s just fine to. We want people to listen to our songs so it’s of no relevans what other bands we use to play with.

An album was born, simply titled “The Dagger”. What was it that you put in the most effort in during recordings? How much did you have to work on being unique?

First of all you have to write good songs and be confident with what you’re doing. We don’t care if it’s fashionable or not to play hard rock in 2014. We’ve never strived to be original or unique. We are totally aware how hard it is to come up with something new in 2014 so we just wrote hard rock the way WE like it and how WE want to hear it. Groovy, to the point with feeling and passion. We recorded the whole album live in the studio and we really avoided using the computors to cover mistaces and we didn’t move vocal-lines to make it fit it in the right place afterwards. This album is recorded as a band, a unit. We let our personal styles shine through and that’s more important than only technical skills  without any feeling or passion. We also did let some small mistaces pass through if the right feeling was in that perticular song. So about being unique, as a guitarist I’ve always benn totally influenced by Blackmore, Murray and Schenker and that’s never gonna change. I don’t care about playing any groundbreaking stuff so to speak..Blackmore will always be my guitarbible. When you listen to the purple-albums they sound so “alive” and they’re not perfectly played all the time but the feeling is always there in Blackmore’s and Lord’s solos and that’s what I love. Who said rock music is supposed to be perfect anyway, right? Today bands concentrate on being so bloody tight and “faultless” all the time and what happens is that they forget personality and feeling in the river.. (At the very moment I’m writing this I listen to a John Lord-solo live from ’71 when he’s improvising. Throwing in some Bach and back to rock again. Bloody brilliant!!).

It is always hard to know how an album will be recieved but after reading the reviews and talking to the press, they love it and that’s great!

I guess that as a teen you grew up on the songs of Judas Priest and Deep Purple, but up now you have played a rougher genre, mostly Death Metal. Now you took a turn back and vigorously play the great retro metal! Have the trends helped you in making this decision or you were simply like: dude, listen to this, not all that NU stuff, ‘cause you’ll love this!

Again, what’s trendy or not is totally irrelevant for us. It’s just a coincidense that many bands play classic hard rock basically at the same time, I think. We’ve never cared which way the wind blows! If you believe in yourself, fucking go for it! And that’s what we did. One thing that might separate us from other new bands is the fact that we brought some old blues rock-influences from bands as early whitesnake to our songs instead of having twentyfive riffs in the style of mercyful fate and exciter, perhaps. We also skipped the occult-image stuff. My lyrics are more melancholic and not at all “cool” or “dangerous”. If bands want to put masks on or play “casio-keyboardchoruses”,  it’s up to them…

Does the audience change much during live concerts? Do you anticipate seeing new and old fans alike? : )

Well, it’s quite exciting to see actually. You still see the bathory and sodom-shirts in the audience but also some younger ones that doesn’t even listen to extreme metal at all. And you could also see some older people (that have found their old leatherjacket in the closet) to show up at gigs to, and that’s fantastic!

How do you imagine the future, what are your plans? Who would you like to concert with?

Our goal is to become a great hard rock band that people can trust not to become commersial and never ever follow trends! (souns a bit like a Steve Harris-statement, doesn’t it?). We want to play arenas and not become a boring coverband that plays for beermoney on the pubs around sweden. We really believe in this! We really have a big following already and that’s great.

What would you say, what do older bands think about those bands, who haven’t played this genre previously but now do?

Interesting question. The fact is, I really don’t know. It would be interesting to hear what  Rob Halford, for example, would think but at the end of the day, as long as we’re happy about our songs, that’s what matters anyway. But it would make me very happy to hear that Steve Harris likes the album. That would mean alot to me. But I know that if I would meet my heroes I would be to shy or nervous to talk about the dagger anyway…

The songs on ‘The Dagger’ are really good; I think I’ll keep listening. I really hope there are many others who show this affection. Thank you for the interview and good luck!

Cheers! Thanks alot for your support! Hope the people in hungary will enjoy the album. Dig it! Up  the daggers!
