Sziasztok, üdvözlet Magyarországról! Egy véletlen sodorta felém az új lemezeteket, az Anticipation For Blood Leveled In Darkness-t. Jean Baudint és különös basszusgitárját láttam, hallottam először. Azt gondoltam, valami technikás, meglehetősen elvont death metallal lesz dolgom, de mikor már a lemezt hallgattam, beláttam tévedtem. Hihetetlen jó dalok sorakoznak egymás után. Pörgősek, brutálisak, ezek ellenére mégsem hanyagolják az emlékezetes részeket, jó dallamokat, nagyszerű szólókat. Igaz, még a hivatalos megjelenés előtt vagyunk, de esetleg kaptatok visszajelzéseket a lemez kapcsán?
Kösz a bókot. Nagyon örülünk azzal, ahogy az új album sikeredett. Igen, küldtünk ki pár promót a metál médiába, és eszméletlenek a visszajelzések!!! Úgy néz ki az emberek imádják a hangzásunk. Már a mixelés és masterelés alatt is tudtuk… ez az album brutális lesz és lehengerlő!!
Ti, mint az alkotók bizonyára más füllel hallgatjátok munkátok gyümölcsét. Korai még azt kérdeznem mennyire vagytok elégedettek a végeredménnyel, van esetleg olyan dolog, amit már másként csinálnátok, vagy olyan dolog ami különösképp jól sikerült?
Hát, négy évembe telt hogy összehozzam a dalokat, felvegyem a demót aztán később átrendezzem a dalokat. Nagyon elégedett vagyok és semmit nem változtatnék. Szeretem a dalokat, a kivitelezést, az alapötletet. Ja… imádom a gitárszólókat
Gondolom, a csapaton belül mindenkinek megvan a maga kedvenc dala. Kinek melyik és miért nőtt a szívéhez?
Ezt nem tudom, erről a srácokat kell kérdezned… A kedvencem a Cetewayo. Imádom, mert brutális a hangzása, a vokál és a dalszöveg egyike a legjobbaknak amiket írtam, és a riff is egyike a legjobbaknak amit Hirotól hallottam.
Utánaolvasva a zenekar történetének, nem mondható szokványosnak. 2001-től létezik a Voodoo Gods, de a bemutatkozó anyag csak 2008-ban jelent meg, majd 6 évet kellett várni a folytatásra. Ez így kényelmes tempónak tűnik :), de gondolom nem a kényelem rejtőzik a magyarázat mögött. Mivel teltek az évek?
Tudom… nehéz volt nekünk a távolság miatt, és én is sokszor költöztem az elmúlt 15 év alatt. Az, hogy nem vettünk fel semmit inkább anyagi okok miatt volt. Nem volt szerződésünk, és az utakért és stúdióbérlésért a saját zsebembe kellett nyúlnom. Ezért is vettük fel az EP-t öt különböző stúdióban, és hogy a hangzás miért is lehetne sokkal jobb… magunk mixeltük. 2008 után kezdtem el írni az új dalokat és felvettem egy 8 dalos demót; csak gitár és dob. 2012-ben kiadtuk az EP-t megint egy másik borítóval és Mike adta ki a Misanthropica Enterprises-től. Kisegített a megjelentetésben és egy kis pénzzel is 2007-ben. Így 2012 után elkezdtük átvariálni a demót és megkezdtük a szöveg és vokálok írását. Ez a történet… az új albumot 2014-ben fejeztük be. Már van 4 dalom a következő albumra, felvételre készen. A dolgok már sokkal könnyebbek számunkra, lévén 2 stúdióm is van és végre találtunk egy remek kiadót a Saturnal Records személyében.
Milyen koncepcióval alakult annak idején a Voodoo Gods? Hogy alakult, hogy nemzetek szerint is ilyen vegyes lett az összetétel. Nem lehet egyszerű összehozni egy próbát, vagy nem is a hagyományos értelemben működtök?
Az alapelképzelés, hogy metált játszunk. Egyik témánk a természet, de ott van még a voodoo és a vallás.
George-ot, Seth-et és Hirot már több mint 17 éve ismerem. Jean-t az interneten ismertem meg kb hét éve, és elvállalta a zenélést az első EP-nken.
Őket választottam, mert barátok vagyunk és megvolt bennük az a tehetség amit kerestem. Ugyan ez a helyzet Mike Browninggal és Nergallal. Évek óta ismerem őket és mindig is barátok voltunk. Mikor írom a dalokat, már tudom milyen vokált akarok rá… ez alapján választom a többieket. Rengeteg power metált hallgatok, a gitárhoz pedig őrületes íveket akartam és ezt a Paganini stílust… és csak egy maroknyi gitáros tudja ezt a stílust és sebességet. David Shankle egyikük, azután vettem fel vele a kapcsolatot, hogy láttam játszani a Manowar koncerten.
Nergal Behemoth-os elfoglaltságai miatt nem marad sokáig veletek. Hogy néz ki, George Fisher mennyire szilárd tagja a csapatnak?
George különleges eset, mert már egyszer megkértem, hogy csatlakozzon a Shrunken Headhez annó, mikor még Floridában éltem. Szóval tisztában volt vele, hogy előbb utóbb megkérem, hogy csatlakozzon a Voodoo Gods-hoz is. Teljes értékű tagként tekintek rá.
Ha jól tudom a dalok nagyrészét Alex Voodoo írta. Miről szólnak a dalok? Honnan jön az ihlet? Volt-e hatással a szövegekre valami könyv, vagy esetleg film? Vannak zenei példaképek?
A legtöbb dalszövegem gyűlöletes és dühös. Itt vezetem le mindazt, ami rosszul sülhet el a világban. Az egyház olyasmi, amit teljes mértékben megvetek, és meg is kapják azt amit érdemelnek. Sok időt töltöttem Haitin és a sziget dominikai oldalán. Talán ez része annak, amiből ihletet merítek. Egyértelműen hallhatod a thrash metál behatást a zenénkben. Kreator és a régi Sodom és Sepultura még mindig a kedvenc bandáim.
Talán nem véletlen érzem úgy, hogy Alex a csapat veleje. Azt olvastam, kenyai születésű. Hogy került kapcsolatba ezekkel a zenékkel? Minek köszönhető, hogy ilyen zseniális módon érzi ezt a fajta death metalt?
Imádom a metál korszakát. 11 éves korom óta hallgatok metál zenét. Olyan bandákkal kezdtem mint a Queen és a Beatles. Néhány barátom és főleg azok bátyjai rengeteg bakelitet és kazettát cseréltek velem. Aztán egyszer kaptam egy kazettát amin Iron Maiden Somewhere in Time-ja volt, a másik oldalon pedig Asylum a Kiss-től. Az a nap megváltoztatta a zenei életem. Pár hónappal később megszereztem W.A.S.P.-tól a Live in the Raw albumot. Az a kazetta egy évig nem került ki a lejátszómból… az első metál banda számomra a Death és Obituary volt. 1987-ben Leprosy, két évvel később Slowly We Rot. Kedvenc bandáim közé tartozott még a New-York-i Napalm és a kanadai Sacrifice. A death és a thrash metál tette a legnagyobb benyomást!!!
Honnan a vudu mánia? Esetleg Alexnak van valami kapcsolata a vudu vallással? Vagy érdeklődés szintjén van a dolog? Mesélnétek a vuduról, ugyanis úgy vélem, számos téves közhiedelem terjeng, főleg a filmeknek köszönhetően, róla.
A voodoo Afrikából származik, onnan érkezett Nyugat-Afrikába aztán a Karibi térségbe a rabszolga kereskedelem során.
Az eredete napjaink Beninjéből, Nigéria bizonyos területeiről és Haitiról származik.
A voodoo-t leginkább az ősi szellemek, spirituális világ és természet szimbólumaként használom, a hét elemet képviseli: víz, tűz, szél, fény, fém, idő és föld.
Ez persze az én filozófiám és életstílusom. Sokféleképp értelmezhető és néhány embernek többet jelent mint az élet. Nem akarok 
nagyon belemenni a részletekbe… személyes dolog.
A stúdióban Andy LaRocque-val dolgoztatok. Miért rá esett a választásotok? (Volt szerepe, hogy annak idején játszott King Diamond Voodoo lemezén is? 🙂 ) Milyen volt vele dolgozni? Mennyire szólt bele Andy a zenébe? Hogy alakult, hogy a Renaissance of Retribution szólóját ő játszotta fel? Hogy tetszett neki a zenétek?
Andy volt az első választásom és kb. egy éve vettem fel vele a kapcsolatot. Válaszolt és mondta, hogy keressem hat hónap múlva. Utána egyeztettünk az időpontokról és stúdiós összejövetelekről.
Pár hónappal hamarabb elmentem Svédországba, hogy találkozhassak vele és megnézzem a helyszínt. 1985 óta a King Diamond gitárosa…
Mindig is szerettem munkáit mint producer. A szólóval kapcsolatban, megkérdeztem, hogy lenne-e kedve játszani az albumon.
Nagyon tetszett neki az album és beleegyezett ha az idő úgy engedi (eléggé szigorú beosztásunk volt) Persze mikor átküldtem a projektet az teljes káosz volt, beletelt egy kis időbe míg elrendezte a dalokat. De végül örült és imádja a zenénket.
Lehet már tudni, hol lehet élőben látni titeket? Esetleg van köztük pár európai helyszín?
Igen, lesz pár fellépésünk és koncertünk jövőre, talán egy turné is. Idénre kitalálom a színpadi koreográfiát és rengeteget próbálunk majd. Egész biztos vagyok benne, hogy bírni fogjuk a turnét a beosztásunkkal… A fesztivál koncertek tutik. Másik terv az volt, hogy beszervezünk pár másik bandát és velük turnézunk. Na majd meglátjuk…!
Erről jut eszembe, élőben milyen felállás várható? Készültök valami különös show elemmel, vagy pőre metal várható?
A felállás úgy lesz ahogy van!! Esetleg pár régi tag csatlakozhat, de ez függeni fog mindenki idejétől!! Ettől függetlenül oda fogunk csapni!!
Gondolom ,jövőbeli tervekről korai kérdezni, mégis megteszem. Hogy látjátok, mikorra várható a folytatás? Lesz megint új torok a mikrofon mögött?
Még túl korán van, hogy a terveinkről beszéljünk, de egye fene. Te mit gondolsz, a következő kiadványnak is kell majd pár év hogy érjen? Lesz torok a mikrofon mögött mégegyszer?
Van pár demóverzióm az új dalokhoz meg néhány kész dalszöveg. Nem, az új album 2016-ban kiadásra kerül. Persze hogy nem, maradni fog ez a felállás a következő albumra.

Hey, greetings from Hungary! It was a coincidence that landed your new album, Anticipation for Blood Leveled in Darkness in my hands. I saw and heard Jean Baudin and his strange bass first and I expected to hear technical and quite abstract death metal, but when I got to listening to the album, I had to admit I was wrong. It was full of great songs, one after the other. They are brutal and full of energy but at the same time not devoid of memorable parts, great melodies and fantastic solos. I know that technically the album still hasn’t been released, but did you receive any feedback on it already?
Thanx for the great compliments.We are very happy with the result from the new album. Yeah, some promos were sent to the metal media and we have a great response on the new album !!! Peope seem to dig our sound.Already during the mix and mastering procedure we knew….this album will sound brutal and kick ass !!
You, as the creators most likely have a different kind of image about the final product of your work. It is maybe too early to ask if you are entirely content with the result, but is there anything that you would change on the album or something that you are exceptionally proud of?
I mean, it took me like 4 years to get all the songs together record a demo and later rearrange the songs.I am really happy and I would not change anything.I like the songs, the production and the concept. Yeah….I love the guitar solos.
I guess everybody in the band has their own favorite song from the album. Who grew fondest of which and why?
I don’t know, you have to ask the guys about it….My favorite song is Cetewayo. I love it, because it sounds really brutal and the vocal patterns and lyrix are one of the best I ever wrote, also the riff is probably one of the best i heard from Hiro.
I did my research on the history of the band and I have to say it is quite unusual. The band has been active since 2001, but the debut EP only saw the light of day in 2008. Afterwards, the world had to wait six more years to hear the first full length. This is quite a relaxed tempo to say the least, but I’m sure the reason is not laziness. What was the reason behind such an extended period of preparation?
I know…it was hard for us, because of the distance and I always moved to different locations over the last 15 years.The reason we never recorded anything before was more a financial issue. We had no record deal and I had to pay for flights, studio time out of my own pocket. That is also the reason we recorded the EP in 5 different studios and why the sound could be way better….we mixed it ourselves. After 2008 I started to write the new songs and I recorded a demo with 8 new tracks; just guitar and drums. In 2012 we rereleased the EP again with a different artwork and Mike from Misanthropica Enterprises released it. He helped me with the release and some money in 2007. So after 2012 I begun to rearrange the demo and started to write lyrics and the vocal patterns. So here you go…..the new album was competed in 2014. I already have 4 songs for our future album ready to record. Things are now much easier for us, because I own now 2 recording studios and we finally found a great record company in Saturnal Records.
What was the original concept behind forming Voodoo Gods? How did it turn into such an international project? Arranging a rehearsal must be quite hard this was, so I guess you have to find some alternative method. How do you rehearse?
The main concept is to play metal music. One of the topics is nature the other ones are voodooism and religion.
Well, I’ve known George, Seth and Hiro for over 17 years. I met Jean online about 7 years ago, and he agreed to play on our first EP.
I have chosen these guys because we are friends and they had the talents I’ve been looking for. The same with Mike Browning and Nergal, I know them for years and we have always been friends. When I write songs, I already know what type of vocals I wanna hear on top….that is how I choose everybody. I listen to a lot of Power Metal and for the guitar leads i wanted some crazy scales and this type of Paganini style…..there is only few guitar players with that style and speed. David Shankle is one of them and I got in touch with him after I saw him playing on a Manowar fair giving a guitar workshop.
About the rehearse, we can do it with tapes, at least this is how I keep practicing the songs. For t6he end of this year I plan some intense rehearsals at least with the rhythm guitar and the bass. Seth and George are really pros and they would probably just need few days.
There have been and are some internationally recognised artists among your ranks. I’m thinking about Nergal, who sang on the debut EP and George Fisher, who helps out on the new album and is listed as a full-time member. How did your paths cross with these people? Was it part of the original intention to approach these artists or was it more of a coincidence?
I think I answered that question already
Nergal didn’t stay with you for long because of Behemoth’s busy schedule. Is this going to be the case with George Fisher also or is he a more permanent part of Voodoo Gods?
With George was a special case, because I already asked him to join Shrunken Head back in the days, when I was still living in Florida. So he knew I would ask him sooner or later to come and be a part of Voodoo Gods. I consider him to be a full member.
If I’m not mistaken, Alex Voodoo is responsible for writing most the songs. What are the lyrics about, what’s the source of inspiration for them? Are there any books or movies that had a great impact on the lyrical world? Are there musical icons, role models that shaped the path of Voodoo Gods?
Most of my lyrics are really angry and hateful. It’s my outlet for all the things which go wrong in this world. The church is something I totally execrate and they always get what is coming to them. I spend much time in Haiti and on the Dominican side of the island. That is probably one part I take my inspiration from. You can clearly hear the Thrash Metal influence in our music.Kreator and old Sodom,Sepultura are still my favorite bands.
Maybe it’s not without reason that I think Alex, who was born in Kenya, is the mind behind the band. How did he enter the world of metal? What were the key elements in the evolution of his marvelous sense of death metal?
I love metal period. I’ve benn listening to metal music since I was 11. I started with bands like Queen and the Beatles.Some of my older friends and epecially their older brothers traded vinyl records and tapes with me. One day my I got a tape with Iron Maiden’s Somewhere In Time and on the other side was Asylum from Kiss.That day changed my musical way. A few month later I got the Live In The Raw album from W.A.S.P. that tape did’t leave my tapedeck for 1 year…..Death and Obituary were the first Death Metal bands for me. In 1987 with Leprosy and 2 years later Slowly We Rot. One of my favorite bands were also Napalm from New York and Sacrifice from Canada.So basicly Deathand Thrash Metal had the biggest impact !!!
Where does this obsession with voodoo come from? Do the members have personal ties to the religion, or is it just an acquired interest? I believe there are lots of misconceptions spreading around about voodoo mysticism, partly because it’s misrepresentation in fiction like movies. Could you tell us a bit about what it’s really like?
Voodooism is acctually based in Africa and travelled from Westafrica to the Caribbean with the slave trade.
The origin would be todays Benin and parts of Nigeria and these days also in Haiti.
I use voodoo more as a symbol for ancient spirits, the spirit world and spiritual nature. It represents a concept of 7 elements : Water, Fire, Wind, Light, Metal, Time and Earth.
This of course is my own philosophy and way of life. It works in many ways and for some people it means more than life. I don’t wanna get too much into details….this is a very personal agenda.
You worked with Andy LaRocque in the studio. Why did you choose him? Is it just a coincidence that he also played on King Diamond’s Voodoo album back in the days? How did working with him go, to what extent did he participate in the creative process? How did the idea of him playing the solo of Renaissance of Retribution come by? What was his personal opinion about your music in the beginning?
Andy was my first choice and I contacted him about one year ago. He got back to me and told me to contact him again in 6 month. After that, we set up the dates for the studio session.
I drove to Sweden few month earlier to meet him and to check the location. He has been the King Diamond guitarist since 1985…..
I always liked his work also as a producer. For him playing the solo, I just asked him if he would like to play one on the album.
He was very fond of our new album and he agreed, if the time would allow it (we had a very tight schedule). Of course when I sent him the project, it was total chaos and it took him a while to sort all the tracks.But at the end he was very happy and he loves our music.
Do you have any touring plans to spread the word about the album? Maybe European ones?
Yes, we will play few festival shows next year and probably a tour. For this year I plan the stage concept and lots of rehearsals. I am pretty sure we can handle a tour with all our schedules…..The festival shows for sure. Another plan was to put few of the bands together and tour with them.We will see…….!
Which reminds me, what will the live linuep be like? Do you have some special stage design/setup or is it “just” straightforward metal slaughter?
I will keep the lineup as it is !! Maybe few old members can join us, but this will depend on everybodys schedule !! Nonetheless we gonna kick serious ass !!
It might be way too early to ask about future plans, but I’ll do it anyway. What do you think, will the next release also need a few years to mature? Will there be a new throat behind the mic once more?
I have few demo versions for new songs and also few lyrix ready. No, the next album will be out in 2016. Of course not, I will keep the same lineup also for the next album.
