Üdvözletem a csapatnak! Mindig öröm találkozni egy új reményteli csapattal, főleg idehaza. 2016-ban adtátok az első jelet, hogy létezik a Zuhatag. Milyen erők hozták össze és milyen cél vezérelt benneteket?
• Amikor elkezdtük, szinte idegenek voltunk egymás számára. Nem csak emberként, de zeneileg is. Mind a négyen igen eltérő zenei háttérrel rendelkezünk, meglehetősen különböző alkotói közegből érkeztünk. Szabolcsunk a gitár mellett fúvósokon is tanult, játszott nagyzenekarban is. Dávid, a basszusgitárosunk megfordult már punk és kalóz-metál együttesekben. Beni mióta az egyetemen megismerkedtünk, különböző stílusok dobtechnikáit fürkészi és tanulja autodidakta módon, ezzel a saját határait keresi és feszegeti. Magam (Gergely) számos európai népzenei stílust tanultam, és a komolyzenei érdeklődésen túl az elektronikai és akusztikai zenei improvizáció is közel áll hozzám.
• Fontos szabályként már korán felvetettük, hogy soha sem állítunk korlátot egymás elé abban, hogy a saját hátterének megfelelő tartalmat, stílust vagy technikát építse bele az olvasztótégelybe. Ebből rögtön következett, hogy nem is kívánunk egy meghatározott irányba haladni. Joggal merülhet fel a kérdés, hogy nem lesz-e ez így túl divergens. Elkeveredhet-e egységesen egymással ez a sok különbözőség?
• Ez kihívás volt. Az első hónapokban nem is foglalkoztunk mással, csak kerestük a kezdő lépést az utunkon. Kaszáltunk a ködben, de ezt ne egy feszült útkeresésként képzeld el. A kíváncsiság hajtott minket és a korábban megszokott alkotófolyamatok rutinjával szemben mind úgy éreztük, hogy ha valami, akkor ez a feladat fogja belőlünk kihozni igazán azt, amire képesek vagyunk, szemben azzal amit már tudunk magunkról. Erről persze akkoriban – közel egy éve – így nem beszéltünk.
• Ahogyan teltek a hónapok ráéreztünk, hogyan tudjuk az elképzeléseinket egy irányba terelni. Elragadott minket a flow, és egyre közelebbinek éreztük azt a valamit, amit kerestünk. Ahogyan idővel megtanultunk a zenével egymás között kommunikálni, úgy ismerkedtünk meg jobban.
• Végül a közös munka felgyorsult és egymást téptük ki a hétköznapokból, ahogyan elkezdődtek a próbák. Amikor a kezdeti, óvatos lépéseinkből ezek a kis patakok egymással találkoztak és együtt érték el a hegy oldalát, akkor, a Vesna EP kiadásakor lettünk mi Zuhataggá.
Elkészültek a „Vesna” dalai, nyilvánosság elé tártátok őket és jött a váratlanul sok pozitív reakció. Gondolom teljesen meglepett titeket.
• Meglepett. Azt éreztük, amikor már a felvételekkel célegyenesben voltunk, hogy sikerült megalkotnunk, amit szerettünk volna. Az azonban, hogy ilyen mértékű érdeklődés fogadja majd az EP-t igazi meglepetés volt. Nem azért, mert nem becsültük annyira a zenénket, hiszen pontosan megfogalmaztuk a magunkkal és az anyaggal szembeni elvárásainkat, aztán igyekeztünk ennek megfelelően dolgozni rajta. A Vesna létrehozása annyira kitöltötte a Zuhataggal töltött időnket, hogy ebbe igazán nem is gondoltunk bele.
Ezek után másként látjátok a zenekar jövőjét?
• Határozottan nem. Az elképzeléseink és a céljaink nem változtak. A motivációnk belülről érkezik, így ha senki se hallgatta volna meg, akkor is ugyanezzel a lendülettel folytattuk volna. Boldoggá tesz minket, hogy van kikkel megosztanunk a zenéből származó örömünket, és hálásak vagyunk az érdeklődésért.
Milyen skatulyákba sorolták és mihez, milyen bandákhoz hasonlították eddig a zenéteket?
• Meglepő lehet a válasz, de egyelőre ilyet nem mondtak nekünk. Ez nem is gond, hiszen amúgy sem volt az cél, hogy valamihez vagy valakikhez hasonlítsunk. Ez az egész Zuhatag dolog, ahogy van, így folyt ki az üstből. A post-rock, post-metal cédulákat is óvatosan akasztottuk rá utólag. Egyik ismerősöm ajánlotta az „akusztikus technoklezmert”, de szerintem csak viccelt.
Mindenki nagy örömére gyorsan jött a folytatás és már itt is van a kettes hanganyag az „Arbiter”, ami képes rögtön megérinteni a hallgatót, főleg miután rájön, hogy ez magyar banda! Kezdjük a kormánykerékkel, mit mondanál róla?
• Az a kerék a bármilyen értelemben vett hatalom szimbóluma. Ezt az emberek kortól, kultúrától függetlenül igyekeznek megszerezni, egymás kezéből kitépni. Ugyanakkor ez egy eszköz, amivel olykor ha akarjuk, ha nem, élni kell, mert mások függnek attól, hogy elég erősen tartjuk-e a kezünkben. A kérdés, hogy mikor milyen hatalom ez a kerék, attól függ, kinek a szemével és honnan nézzük.
• Amikor elkészültünk a felvételekkel, próbáltuk szavakba önteni, hogy milyen gondolatokat ébreszt bennünk, amit csináltunk. Aztán egy hirtelen ötlettől vezérelve loptuk el ezt a kereket egy kalóz-metál együttestől. Persze visszakapták.
Négyen vagytok és úgy vélem, nagyon erős kötelék van köztetek és jól megértitek egymást. A zenétekből ez jön le leginkább, vagy tévednék? Te hogy látod, mennyire erős a Zuhatag 2017-ben?
• A megértés a kulcs és igen, ez szerencsére megvan. Ki kellett, hogy alakuljon egy nagyon finom, részletes párbeszéd közöttünk. Enélkül nem találtuk volna meg azt az utat, amin éppen együtt haladunk. A cél továbbra is ez az út maga.
• A Zuhatag még nagyon fiatal együttes. Sok más zenekarban voltam már, és tudom, hogy mennyi olyan helyzet van még előttünk, amiben helyt kell állnunk együtt az egységért. Sok olyan próbatétel, amin egy csapat könnyen letérdel, ha a tagjai nem hajlandóak vagy nem képesek magukból áldozatokat hozni a közösségért. Nem lehet az a cél, hogy az ember a személyes szándékaira erőszakolja rá az együttes döntéseit, hogy az ember több legyen a zenekar által. Legyen több a zenekarért.
• A színpadon, a stúdióban a Zuhatagban nincs Beni, Szabi, Dávid vagy Gergely. Zuhatag van.
Az „Arbiter” három dalból áll és az előző anyaghoz hasonlóan ingyenesen elérhető, ami véleményem szerint a lehető legjobb megoldás a promotálásra, a zene megismertetésére. Eddig milyen értékes kapcsolatokat szereztetek vele? Mindent saját magatok találtok ki és alkottok meg? Gondolok itt az imidzsre és egyéb zenekari teendőkre.
• Az ingyenesen letölthető változat mellett a bandcamp (zuhatag.bandcamp.com) oldalon tömörítetlen formában is hozzáférhető. Szerencsére szép számban akadtak olyanok, akik így szerezték be a lemezt, ezzel támogatva a zenekart. Minden letöltésért egyaránt hálásak vagyunk, legyen az ingyenes vagy támogatói.
• Az EP megjelenések után mindig kapunk biztató üzeneteket, amelyek között olykor-olykor akad olyan is, amiben lehetőségeket kínálnak nekünk. Ezekről ilyen korán még kár lenne beszélni. Eljön az ideje.
• A képi világ és a logó mind a saját munkánk. Segítséget a fotózáshoz Bencsik Marianntól kaptunk. Hozzá már kész elképzelésekkel mentünk. Szeretjük ezt ilyen formában, illetve ezzel nem is vagyunk egyedül. Van annak egy szépsége, amikor a teljes zenekari jelenség DIY. Nem lesz ez mindig így, egyszer illene majd rendes stúdióba is elmennünk. Eddig a felvételeket és a keverést is házon belül intéztük.
A zenében nagyon sokféle dolgot hallani, egy kicsit szedjük szét darabjaira. Ki mit alkot, hoz a közösbe, hogyan áll össze az egész?
• Szabolcs (gitár) az a fajta ember, aki képes egyetlen effektpedállal addig foglalkozni, ameddig a lehető legtöbb hangzást ki nem bányássza belőle. A lehetőségek szűk köre mellett az ember erősebben támaszkodik a kreativitására. Szeretünk halk-hangos témákat keverni, ami olykor elég nagy dinamikai különbségeket eredményez. Beni, a dobosunk ebben abszolút partner, emellett pedig mindig a tudása bővítésével foglalkozik. Nem túlzás, a heti két próbánkon túl további 2-3 alkalommal jár gyakorolni. Dáviddal és a basszusjátékával elég jól megtalálták a közös hangot. Nekem nem volt idegen az elektro-akusztikus hegedű, itt viszont kiélhetem a torzítására irányuló hajlamaimat.
• Eddig csak a Vesna című dalunk feldolgozása az, amiben elengedtük a hangszeres gyeplőt, amúgy a saját hangszerén túl máson a zenekarban még egyikünk sem játszott, bár egyre gyakrabban kerül elő ez a téma.
• A Vesna feldolgozásában viszont a különböző kalapácsokkal ütögetett pinceajtó szőnyeggel letakart és mezítelen változata is helyet kapott. Ez a feldolgozás már nagyon kérette magát, miután a Vesna EP felvételekor maradt egy hatalmas űr azoknak a témáknak a helyén, amit a hangkép már nem engedett bele a zenébe.
Hol vettétek fel az új dalokat? A „Vesna” dalaihoz képest miket és miért változtattatok?
• A próbateremben, illetve nálam, a lakásomon történtek a felvételek. Egyelőre követjük ezt a módszert, aztán az első hosszabb kiadványnál meglátogatunk egy stúdiót.
• Néhány dologba tényleg belenyúltunk. Az első anyaggal kapcsolatos visszajelzések jó támpontot adtak. Ez arra lesz jó, hogy majd profi körülmények között tudni fogjuk, milyen hangzást szeretnénk.
Több rövidebb kiadványt ígértek a közeljövőben. A Zuhatag folyamatosan változni fog? Mindig máshogyan ér majd földet? Mi marad a fő irány?
• Valószínűleg igen. Beni rákapott az aszimmetrikus témákra, Dávid nyit a basszuseffektek felé, én meg a balkáni és orientális zene után ismét visszatérek a skandináv és reneszánsz témákhoz. Mindig más foglalkoztat minket és ez valószínűleg érezhető is lesz az anyagainkon.
• A fő irány továbbra is az, hogy kihozzuk magunkból a lehető legjobbat, bármilyen formában.
Fizikai formátumban elérhető lesz idővel valamelyik kiadvány? Kiadóval szeretnétek felvenni a kapcsolatot?
• Nem zárunk ki semmilyen lehetőséget. Fizikai formátum biztosan lesz, egyelőre erre a szeptember-október magasságát lőjük meg. Jó eséllyel akkor érkezik a III. Szezon.
Mennyi koncertet terveztek erre az évre?
• Amennyi csak belefér az őszbe. Addig még nagyon sok más dolgunk van, ameddig az első, teljes hosszúságú Zuhatag koncertet abban a formában színpadra tudjuk vinni, amit kitaláltunk. Erről ismét korán lenne részletesebben beszélni, de majd idővel.
Tudtok róla, hogy az országban egy másik zenekar is használta ezt a nevet? Nem adódtak belőle problémák?
• Tudjuk és sajnáljuk.
Remélem, egyre többen megismerik a zenéteket és sikerül a céljaitokat elérni! Én szinte biztos vagyok benne, hogy sokat fogunk még hallani felőletek! Sok sikert!
ENGLISH VERSION
Greetings to the band! It is always a pleasure to meet a new group with high hopes, especially in our small country. The first signs of life from Zuhatag came in 2016. What forces have brought it to life and what purpose drove you?
• We were basically strangers to each other when we started. Not only as people, but also as musicians. All four of us come from different musical backgrounds and from different artistic environment. Our guitarist, Szabolcs learned to play the wind instruments, and he played in an orchestra, too. Dávid, our bassist has been in punk and pirate-metal bands. Beni has been seeking and learning new drumming techniques of different styles by himself since we met at the university, searching and probing his own limits. As for myself (Gergely), I have studied several European folk styles, and besides my penchant for classical music, electronic and acoustic improvisation is close to me as well.
• It has been stated as a fundamental rule among ourselves that we wouldn’t roll obstacles in front of each other to contribute content, style or technique fit for a member’s own background into our common melting pot. This approach has pinpointed that we wouldn’t follow a specific path. This, of course, brings up the question whether our music would be aimless or not. Can all these differences dissolve in each other?
• This was a challenge. We have spent the first months deciding on the first step on our journey. We’ve been reaping in the mist, but don’t imagine it as some sort of a strained search. We were driven by curiosity, and we have all felt that in the face of the routine of our previously applied artistic processes, this was going to be the task that would make us show what we were really capable of, versus what we already knew about ourselves. This was almost a year ago, and of course we didn’t put this into words back then.
• As the months went by we found the ways to drive our ideas in a common direction. We were taken by flow, and started to feel that we were getting closer and closer to what we’ve been searching for. As we learned to communicate through music as a band, we’ve gotten to know each other better and better, day by day.
• In time the mutual work picked up pace, and we have started to wrench each other out of the routine of the weekdays at rehearsals. Our careful, initial steps were like little individual creeks, and when they joined and reached the cliffs together, at the publishing of the EP Vesna, that’s when we have become Zuhatag – Torrent.
The tracks of Vesna have been completed and released, and you were showered in positive feedback. I bet it was a total surprise.
• It did surprise us. We were pretty sure that we were on the right track during the recordings, and that we managed to create what we wanted – but the fact that the EP was received with such interest was a true surprise. Not because we didn’t value our music, as we have stated our expectations about ourselves and the material clearly, and then we were working to live up to them. Creating Vesna took up so much of our time with Zuhatag that we didn’t really stop and think about it.
Do you guys see the future of the band differently in light of this?
• Definitely not. Our ideas and goals have not changed. Our motivation comes from within, which means that even if no one listened to the material, we would still be doing it with this much intensity. Sharing the joy of music makes us happy, and we are grateful for the interest of course.
What boxes were you put in, and what bands did people compare your music to so far?
• It might sound surprising, but no such thing has been said about us as far as we know. This is not a problem, as the goal was never to be compared to someone or something. This whole Zuhatag thing came out of the pot as it is. We were even careful to apply the post-rock and post-metal tags on it afterwards. One of my acquaintances suggested “acoustic technoklezmer”, but I think he was only joking.
The follow-up arrived soon for everyone’s delight: material number two was released under the title Arbiter – it really touches the listener at first listening, especially if you know they are your fellow countrymen! Let’s start with the steering wheel on the cover, what would you say about that?
• That wheel symbolizes power, in any context. People strive to grab it regardless of age or culture, to wrestle it from each other’s hands. At the same time it is a tool, which we have to use sometimes whether we want to or not, because other people depend on the strength with which we hold on to it. The type of power this wheel symbolizes depends on the eyes and perspective of the person looking at it.
• When we were ready with the recordings, we have tried to put the thoughts it invoked in us into words. Then we stole this steering wheel on a whim from a pirate metal band. Of course, they got it back afterwards.
There are four of you and I bet there’s a strong bond among you guys, and that you get along really well. This is what your music is implying, or am I wrong? What would you say, how strong is Zuhatag in 2017?
• The key is understanding, and yes, luckily we have that. A very subtle and detailed way of communication had to form between us. Without this, we wouldn’t have found the way together. The destination is still the journey itself.
• Zuhatag is still a very young band. I have been in plenty of other bands, and I know that there are a lot of situations lying ahead of us in which we will have to demonstrate unity. There are many trials that make groups kneel if its members are not willing or are able to make sacrifices for the whole. The goal cannot be the fulfilment of an individual’s will against the decisions of the band, so that you alone can grow by the band. You should grow for the band.
• On the stage, in the studio or in Zuhatag there is no Beni, Szabi, Dávid or Gergely. There is only Zuhatag.
Arbiter consists of three tracks, and just like the previous material, it can be downloaded for free, which in my opinion is the best way to promote music. Did you guys make valuable connections through it so far? Do you guys come up with and finalize everything? By that I mean band image and other activities.
• Besides the free downloadable version there is an uncompressed one which can be accessed on the band’s Bandcamp site (zuhatag.bandcamp.com). Luckily there are plenty of people who got our record through this method, thus supporting us. We are of course grateful for every download, be it free or sponsoring.
• We get encouraging messages after an EP is released, with occasional opportunities. It would be too early to talk about these. In due time, we will.
• The visuals and the logo are our own work. We got help with the photos from Mariann Bencsik. We went up to her with ready ideas in our minds. We like it this way, and we are not alone with this. There is some kind of magic with bands going DIY. It won’t always be like this, it would be fitting to go to a proper studio someday. So far we did the recordings and mixing at home.
There are a lot of things to hear in your music, let’s dissect it a bit to see it better. Who does what, what do individuals put into the pot, how does it all fit together?
• Szabolcs (guitar) is the kind of guy who would keep stepping on an effect pedal until he mines all the sounds he can from it. When resources are scarce, you tend to rely more on creativity. We like mixing together soft and loud themes, which sometimes results in a pretty big difference in dynamics. Beni, our drummer is absolutely cool with this, and he is always on to expand his knowledge. I’m not exaggerating when I say that besides our two rehearsals a week he practices 2-3 more days. They get along pretty well with Dávid and his bass play. I wasn’t a stranger to the electro-acoustic violin, and finally I could live out my aptitude for distortion.
• So far we have only let loose on the instruments with the cover of our own song “Vesna”, but neither of us has played anything else besides his own instrument in the band, although the topic comes up pretty frequently nowadays.
• On the cover of “Vesna”, though, we have featured a basement door covered with a carpet and hit with different hammers, and we did the same with the carpet off. This cover was asking to be made, as there was a huge hole gaping after the recordings of the EP Vesna on the place of the themes that the overall sonic image superseded from the music.
Where did you record the new songs? What did you change compared to the tracks of Vesna and what was the reason for it?
• The recordings took place at the rehearsal room and at my place. For now we will go along with this method, and then we’ll visit a studio when we get to a full-length material.
• We really did tinker with a couple of things. The feedback on the first material were good points of reference. We’ll be able to take advantage of this info when we’ll finally be recording in a professional environment.
You guys have promised more, shorter records in the near future. Will Zuhatag keep changing? Will it always land differently? What will remain the main direction?
• Probably yes. Beni got a knack for asymmetric themes, Dávid is open for bass effects, and I’m returning to Scandinavian and Renaissance themes after the Balkan and Oriental style. We were always interested in a lot of things and this will probably be palpable in our future material.
• The main direction is still to get the very best out of ourselves, be it in any form.
Will any of the future material be available in physical format? Would you guys like to get in touch with a record label?
• We are not shying away from opportunities. There will surely be a physical format, we would say in September-October probably. There is a good chance Third Season will be released around that time.
How many concerts are you guys planning for this year?
• As many as we can in the Autumn. We have a lot of other things to do by the time we’ll be able to take the first full-length Zuhatag show to stage in the form that we have in mind. This would also be too early to speak of in detail, but we will in time.
Did you know that there is another band by this name in the country? Doesn’t it cause problems?
• We know of it and we are not happy about it.
