FELLÉPŐK: OF THE WAND AND THE MOON, SCIVIAS, LARRNAKH, STURMAST
November 19-én a Kék Yukban a sötétebb zenék kedvelőinek lehetősége adódott, hogy a stílus egyik legjobb dalszerzőjétől és zenészétől élőben hallhassanak egy kis neofolk zenét. Mivel ez volt az első ilyen stílusú koncert, amin részt vettem, előzetesen nem tudtam mire számítsak. Még csak gondolni sem mertem, hogy ilyen élményben lesz részem!
A koncert kicsit később kezdődött, valószínűleg a technikai problémák miatt, amik az egész este során hátráltatták a fellépőket. Bár este 9-kor már kezdeniük kellett volna, a Sturmast még csak akkor pakolt fel a színpadra. A Varga Gábor vezette banda stílusa leginkább az industrial zene felé tendált, ami folk elemek hatását viseli magán. Kezdéskor még úgy tűnt, hogy a bandából hiányzik a lelkesedés, de az első két dal után végre beindult a buli és egyre több embert csábítottak a színpad elé, megalapozva azt a misztikus atmoszférát, ami egész este kitartott.
A Sturmast után egy másik hazai banda, a Larrnakh következett, aminek a stílusát leginkább ambient folk/industrialként lehetne meghatározni. Az idén megjelent Like The Silken Shrouds Of Loneliness nagylemezüket promótálták, ami már második a sorbam. A banda esze, Sörös Gábor egy elképesztő csapatot rakott össze az élő fellépésekre. Három lány, akik csellón és hegedűn játszanak, plusz Gábor, aki gitározik és néha dobol. Többek között játszották a Delictumot, a Respectus-t és az After All This Time-ot. Néhány dalban a Scivias tehetséges zenésze, Rády Sándor is csatlakozott hozzájuk. Bár nem állandó tag, Rády gyakran fellép a Larrnakh-kal, ahogy Sörös is hozzátesz a Scivias és a Sturmast zenéjéhez. Ezalkalommal Rády extra vokálokat hozott, ami még drámaibbá tette a csapat muzsikáját. Valamilyen oknál fogva végig a színpad hátsó részén maradt, gyakorlatilag teljesen láthatatlanul. De abszolút lenyűgözőnek találtam énekét, a Delictum alatt majd eldobtam az agyam!
Ahogy már említettem, a klub számos technikai kihívással küzdött, időről-időre el-eltűnt egy-egy hangszer a hangképből. Ez sok kellemetlenséget okozott, hiszen a csapatok nagy része csak néhány hangszert használt a színpadon, a némi playbackkel kisegítve. De a hang időszakos elvesztése csak egy eleme volt az estének, ami nagyban befolyásolta az egész koncertsorozatot. A Scivias fellépése alatt ugyanis beszakadt a szintetizátor emelvénye, miközben a banda az egész buli legenergikusabb részét játszotta. Szerencsére ez nem befolyásolta azt az energiát, amivel a csapat zenélt, szócal könnyen folytatták hasonlóak lelkes módon.Továbbá, bár a hangzás nem volt olyan jó, mint amilyen lehetett volna, a hegedűsök mindhárom bandában képesek voltak arra, hogy megmutassák tehetségüket. Játékuk gyakran hipnotizáló erejű volt és nem tudtam nem észrevenni, ahogy a közönség reagált rájuk.
Ez a három inspiráló magyar banda azonban csak a bemelegítés volt. A Scivias 1 körül fejezte be a műsorát, hogy helyet adjon az este fő attrakciójának, az Of The Wand And The Moonnak. Kim Larsen “bandája” ezen az estén csak egy plusz zenészt jelentett, ütőshangszereken John Murphy játszott. Bár Kim gitárjával voltak problémák – néha alig volt hallható, gyakran pedig gerjedt is – képesvolt egy nagyszerű show-t produkálni nekünk. A Summer Solstice-szel kezdett, egyben tesztelte a hangzást is. Hát nem volt tökéletes, de a közönség így is elégedettnek tűnt. Látszólag a Nighttime In Sonnenheim és a Lost In Emptiness tetszett a legtöbb embernek, míg páran csalódottak voltak az új album dalai miatt, mert még nem ismerték őket. Ahogy Kim az interjúban említette is, csak néhány új dalt játszhat (Immer Vorwärts, A Pyre of The Black Sunflowers, Dirtnap Stories, stb). Ennek az az oka, hogy az új album dalai annyira komplexek a hangszerek terén, hogy sokkal több ember kellene a színpadi előadásukhoz, ez pedig jelen esetben lehetetlen volt.
Minden dal után Kim adott pár lapot az első sorban állóknak, amin a dalszövegek voltak, mielőtt belekortyolt volna sörébe. Üzenete egyszerű volt “Igyatok sokat, az meggyógyít”, de a közönség már tudta ezt. A duó a jól ismert I Grave For You-cal fejezte be a műsorát és elhagyta a színpadot. Ezt sokan az est lezárásának vették és hazaindultak, míg mások maradtak és reménykedtek a ráadásban. Pár perc múlva John és Kim visszatért a deszkákra, hogy egy utolsó dalt még eljátszanak nekünk, amit Kim “nagyon jó barátja” kért. Bár állítása szerint rég nem próbálták el, a Gal Anda a tetőpontra juttatta a koncertet.

On Saturday, November 19th, in one of the less known Budapest concert clubs, Kék Yuk, fans of darker music styles had the chance to experience astonishing neofolk music, coming from some of the best songwriters and musicians of the genre. Being the first concert of the kind that I attended, I didn’t quite know what to expect. Fortunately, I could have never even guessed what an experience was awaiting me there.
The concert was running a bit late, probably due to the technical problems that kept slowing everybody down throughout the whole evening. Even though they were supposed to start at 21h, the first band, Sturmast, was already a bit late with the setting up. Fronted by Varga Gábor, the band proceeded in the direction of martial industrial music, influenced by folk. At the beginning the band seemed to lack enthusiasm, but after the first two songs, the show finally kicked off, attracting more and more people towards the stage, and setting the mystic atmosphere that lasted the whole evening.
After Sturmast, the stage hosted another Hungarian band, Larrnakh, whose music can be described as ambient folk/industrial. They are currently promoting their second album, Like the Silken Shrouds of Loneliness, released this year. The band’s mastermind, Sörös Gergö put together an amazing live band, consisting of three girls, playing two cellos and a violin, while he himself played the guitar and occasional drums. Among the songs that they played were Delictum, Respectus, and After All This Time. During some of them Rády Sándor, a very talented musician from Scivias joined the band on the stage. Although he is not their permanent member, Rády often plays with Larrnakh, as well as Sörös contributes to the music of Scivias and Sturmast. This time Rády provided extra vocals, which added to the dramatic effect of Larrnakh’s music. For some reason, unfortunately, he always stayed in the back of the stage, almost completely invisible to the audience. However, I found his vocals absolutely astonishing, and his performance in Delictum nearly blew my mind away.
As I previously mentioned, the technical problems in the club were numerous, and from time to time some of the instruments could not be heard at all. This caused a lot of discomfort, especially because all the bands used only a few instruments on the stage, helped by some playback. So, losing sound in only one aspect affected the whole outcome greatly. During Scivias’ performance the keyboard stand collapsed while the band was playing probably the most energetic part of the whole evening. However, it did not affect the energy with which the band performed their music, so they easily continued in the same manner. Furthermore, although the sound wasn’t as clear as it could have been, I have to say that the violinists in all three bands managed to show great talent and skilfulness. Their playing often felt hypnotizing, and I couldn’t help but notice how well the crown responded to it.
These three highly inspirational Hungarian bands were only a warm-up to what was coming next. Scivias finished around 1 am, and then preparations for the main act, Of the Wand and the Moon started. Kim Larsen’s band featured only one additional musician on the stage this time, John Murphy on percussion. Even though Kim had some troubles with his guitar, which often produced noise, or was not audible enough, he managed to carry out an excellent show. He opened with the song Summer Solstice, at the same time testing the sound. It did not turn out perfect, but the crowd was still very much pleased. Nighttime in Sonnenheim and Lost in Emptiness seemed to appeal to the fans the most, while some were disappointed by the songs from the new album, The Lone Descent, as this album was still unknown to them. As Kim mentioned in the interview for Kronos Mortus, he could only play a few new songs (Immer Vorwärts, A Pyre of Black Sunflowers, Dirtnap Stories, etc). The reason for this is that, due to the new album’s complexity when it comes to the use of different instruments, he would need more people on stage to perform it, which was at the moment impossible to achieve.
After each song, Kim gave out sheets of paper with the lyrics written on them to the people in the front row, right before taking sips of beer. His message was: “Drink a lot, it will cure you”, but the crowd already knew that. The duo finished the show with the well-known song, I Crave For You, and left the stage. One part of the audience took this as a clue to call it a night, but the rest stayed and cheered on, hoping for an encore. After a few minutes, John and Kim returned to the stage to play one last song. It was a request from Kim’s “very good friend”. Even though, he hasn’t “rehearsed it in a while”, this last song, Gal Anda, brought the concert to its peak.
