A francia Drakwaldról még 2012-ben volt szerencsém írni a Kronoson. A 2010-ben alapított pogány/folk melodeath metal zenekar ekkor négyszámos demójával vonta magára a figyelmemet, most pedig a 2014 februárjában megjelent első nagylemezük került a célkeresztbe.
A Resist Fatality címre keresztelt korong – mely szerintem a 9 szám ellenére sem igazán meríti ki a nagylemez fogalmát a maga fél órás hosszával – sok tekintetben jelentős fejlődést mutat a demóhoz képest. A folkos vonal, azon belül is a fafúvósok és a hegedűt és harmonikát imitáló billentyűk jóval erőteljesebben meghatározzák a zenét, a The Drowning intróban pedig komoly epikus hatás érezhető – ebből azonban nem kapunk túl sokat a későbbi dalokban. A korábbi szigorú, klasszikus nordikus death metalos atmoszféra háttérbe szorult, a modernebb, dallamosabb témák váltak meghatározóvá mostanra. A dobtémák egy kicsit továbbra is sablonosak és monotonak, plusz a hangzásuk sem az igazi, a gitárok riffelése viszont elég jól eltalált, több helyen szaggatások színezik a dalokat. Általában azonban a népi instrumentumok viszik a dallamot, kiemelendő például a Giant with the Axe és a záró Inhale the Ashes of Honor dudatémája. Negatívuma a lemeznek, hogy a dalok igen kurták, legtöbbször 3 és fél és 4 perc közöttiek és némelyik igencsak furcsán ér véget – olyan érzésem van, mintha rosszul lett volna megvágva az anyag és pár másodperc hiányozna a végükről.
Jól hallhatóan fejlődött a zenekar angoltudása és némileg a vokálok is erősödtek, ezen a téren némi újításra is sor került. Egyrészt bejött egy furcsa, de érdekes fojtott tiszta énekstílus, amit a modern szaggatásokkal teli Let the Slaughter Begin átvezetőiben vagy épp a humppás-mulatozós When Beer’s Flowing-ban hallhatunk, másrészt tiszta kórusokkal és az Enter in the Den of the Nightban női vokálokkal is találkozunk. Mind a fojtott vokálokat, mind a női éneket fejleszteni kell még, utóbbi elég hamiskás, de jó ötlet volt alkalmazni őket. A dalszövegek továbbra is angol nyelvűek és klasszikus folk metal témákból merítenek, mint a fantasy világ, a hősi harcok stb. vagy épp az élet küzdelmei által megihletettek, ami pedig a death metalra jellemző.
A tours-i zenekar első „nagylemezét” erős kettősség jellemzi. Bár sok tekintetben komoly fejlődésen estek át, a Drakwald új anyaga inkább egy következő lépcsőfoknak tűnik, semmint egy teljesen kiérlelt nagylemeznek. A dalokkal önmagukban nincs baj, némelyik kifejezetten jó hallgatnivaló, de szerintem némi utómunka még ráfért volna a korongra vagy pedig érdemes lett volna EP-ként kiadni az anyagot. Mindenesetre a zenekart ajánlom mindazoknak, akik kedvelik a folk és a melodeath ötvözetét, ígéretes a csapat, de még némi rutinra szükségük lesz, hogy a nemzetközi színtéren is labdába rúghassanak!

ENGLISH VERSION:
I already had the opportunity in 2012 to write about Drakwald from Tours, France on Kronos Mortus. Then I wrote about the four-track demo of the young pagan/folk melodeath metal band while now I’ll tell some words about their first full-length album which was released in February, 2014.
The album entitled Resist Fatality – which isn’t a real longplayer in my opinion with its length of just half an hour, however it has 9 tracks – shows a serious improvement in many cases comparing to the demo. The folk elements, especially the wood-winds and the keyboards (imitating violin and accordion) are more dominant in the music and in the intro, The Drowning we can feel a strong epic tough – unfortunately this doesn’t really return in the next tracks. The earlier strict, classic Nordic death metal atmosphere was put in the background and the modern, melodic themes became leading now. The drum play is still a bit too typical and monotonous and also its sound isn’t that great but the guitar riffs is very well composed; sometimes we even hear syncopated riffing. However; in general the folk instruments play the main melody – I should mention the bagpipes in Giant with the Axe or in the last song, Inhale the Ashes of Honor for example. On the other hand the tracks are very short, mostly between 3 and a half and 4 minutes and some of them has a very weird ending – I feel like they were badly edited and some seconds are just missing from the end.
The English skills of the bands were improved and also the vocals are stronger now – they put some new elements into the vocal part as well. First of all they added a strange but interesting choked clean style which you can hear in the interlude of Let the Slaughter Begin or in the humppa-like revelry song of When Beer’s Flowing; secondly they also use choirs and even female vocals (Enter in the Den of the Night) now. They have to train those choked and female vocals, the latter is quite false sometimes but it was a good idea building them in. The lyrics are still in English and inspired by the classic folk metal topics, like fantasy stories, heroic battles and so on and also by life struggles as it’s general in death metal.
The debut “full-length” album of the French band can be described best by the word dichotomy in my opinion. Although they improved their skills a lot, Drakwald’s new album rather seems to be a next step than a mature longplayer. The lone songs are absolutely okay, some of them are quite good but they should do some more background work on the album or they should have released it as an EP. At all I recommend the band for those who like the mix of folk and melodeath metal, Drakwald is promising but they should get some more routine to win fame in the international scene!
