True Widow, the Texas trio whose music Pitchfork described as “a vast bone-crunching slab of murky distortion,” are set to release their Relapse Records’ debut, Circumambulation, on July 23.
“I’ve always considered us a simple band but these songs seem even more boiled down,” explained singer/guitar player DH Phillips. “I’d say the pace is a little different as well. Things are a bit more upbeat. We also did not want to do a double LP. For me, as a listener of records, I get tired of getting up to change sides so many times. We wanted it to fit on a single record so the album clocks in at about 45 minutes as opposed to an hour like we have done in the past.”
The eight-track release was recorded at The Echo Lab in Argyle, Tex. with the band reuniting with producer Matt Pence (Yuck, Jay Farrar). “We have done all of our recording with him,” added Phillips. “He is able to capture what we do in such a nice, lush way that I couldn’t imagine doing it with anybody else. He is a master at getting that thick sound.”
True Widow, who is rounded out by singer/bass player Nicole Estill and drummer Slim TX, will join label mates Baroness for a handful of dates in May:
May 28 – Charleston, SC – The Music Farm
May 29 – Atlanta, GA – Center Stage
May 30 – Birmingham, AL – The Bottletree Cafe *
May 31 – Dallas, TX – Trees
June 1 – Austin, TX – Chaos in Tejas (Mohawk)
* True Widow only
