As We Draw Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

A kérdésekre Amaury Sauvé válaszolt.

Először is a szokásos sablonos kérdés. Bemutatnátok a zenekart?

Köszönjük ezeket a szép sorokat, igazán örülünk. A bandánk neve As We Draw, és a franciaországi Lavalból származunk.

Mennyire mondjátok magatokat koncert zenekarnak, sokat koncerteztek?

The Rodeo Idiot Engine, a Sight and Sounds, Altess, Narrows, Parween, Kruger… és természetesen a Birds in Row-os kollégáink és barátaink lennének.

Melyik dal jön be legjobban a közönségnek?

Melyik dal mutatja be legjobban a zenéteket?

A dalszövegekről tudnátok mesélni? Milyen hatások érték a zenekart mind szöveg világi, mind zenei téren?

A Lines Breaking Circles esetén a grafikus elképzelésből indultunk ki, ami a dalírás közben megihletett engem. Általában a szöveg esetén törekszem arra, hogy ne a személyes tapasztalataimat és a múltamat írjam bele. Próbálok általános dolgokról írni, ami remélem, hogy rengeteg embert megfog. Ezek a témák általában a harag, a természet, a függés…

Remek!”. Inkább próbálunk ezzel ellentétesen gondolkozni.

Az As We Draw mellett van más bandátok is?

Mik a terveitek a jövőt illetően?

ENGLISH VERSION:

Answered by Amaury Sauvé.

Hello! We could say that you are one of my biggest favourites, and it is an honor for me to have the opportunity of making an interview with you. First, our bread and butter question: please, tell us about the band!

Thanks for the kind words, it really is a pleasure. Our band is called As We Draw, we come from Laval, France. The band was born from the ashes of Hard Off Hearing, a more metal experimental project. We’ve made some change in the line up and in the musical style that created As We Draw. Today the band includes Quentin (guitar and lead vocals), Amaury (drums and backing vocals), and Pierre (bass guitar and backing vocals). We’ve released a double E.P. Quickly, “Background / Frontside” (available for free on http://www.amaurysauve.com/aswedraw/) then in 2010 our first album came out “Lines Breaking Circles”, (also available for free on http://www.amaurysauve.com/aswedraw/linesbreakingcricles/).

Only recently had our editorial receive your album, Lines Breaking Circles, which was released in 2010. What is the reason behind the re-release?

The packaging of the album was totally handmade so the amount of copies was limited to a small number (300ex). To our surprise after a few weeks, we already ran out of copies to sell, which was amazing in itself. So during our last tour, our great friend Mathias from Throatruiner Records gave us the chance to repress the LP, so we did. Moreover, we’ll be able to sell more copies of this first album during our next tours, along with the new one to come, we hope !

The year before last year, your split with Euglena and Hexis saw the light of day. Can something like this be expected in the future, maybe a new album?

We are actually writing a new album which we plan to record in early 2014, hoping for a spring release. We already have 6 tracks, including 3 we’ve already played during our previous shows. Then there will be a euro tour to promote the new album.

Would you call yourselves a live show band? Do you make lots of live performances?

I think that one can describe us as a stage band beside the fact that we’re not playing as much as we’d like because of our busy schedules. Nevertheless, it’s true that our songs make more sense when you see them live, with all the energy that a live-playing-band can have. Moreover, the choices we’ve made concerning the recording are clearly live orientated, the aim being that the tracking is as faithful as possible to our respective playing and behavior, and that the people coming to our shows can find as much as possible the mood and the sound they can hear from their hifi at home. When we record live sessions, we are all together in the same room, we can’t really make mistakes, but if these happen it only make the final result more lively, as if we were playing on stage, in front of people listening.

A few “big” names you have had concerts with?

It doesn’t really matter for us how famous the bands we play with are. But if I can mention a few band names that we think are amazing talented people we’ve met on the road I’d say The Rodeo Idiot Engine,  Sight And Sounds, Altess, Narrows, Parween, Kruger… and obviously our colleagues and friends from Birds in Row.

Which is the crowd favorite song? Is it even possible to select one from all these great songs?

It’s hard to answer that question, the comments we get after the shows in general are more about the whole performance, but I think that Burst of Colour really is a favorite, so is Sin of Addiction. Some people really like Fault lines too… After the split LP, we’ve had to take a few songs out of our setlist, to make room for newer ones. If it was up to us, we would play the whole discography at each gig !

If someone asked “Why should I listen to As We Draw?” what would be your answer?

Maybe that you should just listen to discover what it is about, and to make your own opinion about it.

Which song represents your music the most?

It’s hard to say because we try as much as possible to write music and lyrics around a general concept that one can find in every track, taking one song out of the lot would completely change the meaning of the whole project. Every single sound that we write is written for us bearing in mind that if someone else ever likes it, then that’s perfect. But in general we find ourselves in our music so it would be really hard to chose in particular.

Could you tell us a bit more about your lyrics? What sort of influences did you get both lyrically and musically?

For Lines Breaking Circles we started from a graphic concept that I got inspired from when I wrote the lyrics. In general for all the texts I try my best not to write about my personal experiences or my past. I try to write about general matters to which I hope a lot of people can relate to. These themes are mainly about anger, nature, addiction…

Musically I would say that the three of us have each our own influences that describe our style, as well as the fact that we share common tastes. I’m not sure we can say that the music we’re listening to directly influences the one we write. Nevertheless, we can’t deny neither that we’re not linked to everything that touches us, but it’s never a case of telling ourselves “hey that riff sounds like that band! Great!” We actually try to have the opposite thinking.

Do you have any other bands besides As We Draw? Have you played somewhere else before?

Amaury and Quentin have another project together that I’ve recently joined after the guitarist left. It’s called The Brutal Deceiver (Useless Pride records), and as its name says, it’s a brutal death / hardcore project. Quentin also play guitar in Calvaiire (w/ member from Birds In Row, Puzzle, Throatruiner Records) which is a really noisy, angry and aggressive hardcore band, and he also has a solo acoustic project called Throw Me Of The Bridge, it’s folk music that doesn’t sound really happy. He’s touring a lot with it, and people talk about it. We also have a band made out of members from As We Draw and Birds in Row called Hourvari. A 2 tracks is coming out in september, it’s a post-hardcore project.

What are your plans for the future?

It’s obviously the recording and the release of our second album, as many shows as possible, meeting new people… anything and everything a band can hope for and loves doing.

Any last words for our readers?

Always support your local scene and the things you believe in.

Cheers! Bye!

Thank you for the interview! Best of luck!
