Atrocity Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

The Hunt”), sokan elkezdték találgatni, mi jön most. Ismerek jó néhány zenészt, aki irigyel miket a Werk 80-ért. A mikor a Werk 80 igazi kasszasiker lett, és felkerült a toplistákra a végzetes jóslatok ellenére, sokan teljesen belelkesedtek, olyanok is, akik először elszörnyedtek.

A bandából mindenki hozzátette a maga kedvenc 80-as évek beli slágerét. Én például a Neue Deutsche Welle (Német újhullám) nagy rajongója vagyok.

Alex: Ez a Werk 80 sötétebb változata.

Alex: Hát persze, akkoriban igazi metalhead voltam! Nekem csak a kemény gitár hiányzott belőlük, ezért kerülnek most bele! Ezért én is ismerek jó néhányat ezek közül is.

ENGLISH VERSION:

I am very happy to hear that The follow-up to Werk 80 has been published. Where does the idea of a new cover album come from?

Alex: The whole thing actually started out of a mad idea how those songs would sound like if we played them. There were never any commercial ulterior motives or suchalike to do it. We already did a Metal coverversion from a Demosong by DEATH called „Arch Angel” on the „Todessehnsucht” album. But the idea to do a complete album with non-Metal songs occurred as we made good experiences by working together with musicians from completely different, musical backgrounds. A first step was definitely the acoustic Ethno-Metal album „Calling The Rain” with my sister Yasmin which was really something extraordinary for a Death Metal band. With WERK 80 another aspect arises as well, which appeals to us by setting completely different songs to our music. One Metalband covers another Metalband is actually nothing special anymore and to look at it from the musical side it is a much greater challenge for us to attain a new and good outcome from a song which is stylistically different to what you normally do. In 1995, we recorded covers and new versions of our songs on „Die Liebe” together with the Dark Wave band DAS ICH. On the one hand it was a big step to show that the Metal and Gothic scene was growing together, on the other hand it showed to us musicians that it worked very well if a band like ATROCITY can do something in this way. It is funny and significant that we together did a cover from LAIBACH which are very well known for their covers too. Anyway, shortly after that we did a successful cooperation with the Gothic band LACRIMOSA and the Synth band SILKE BISCHOFF. It was a lot of fun and suddenly there was an amount of people from the Gothic scene that caught attention to us and wanted to work together. The idea to WERK 80 was in our heads much earlier than that but we didn’t feel that time was right to do it. When we entered the studio the next time to record an album with some kind of project character (after we did the „regular” and mighty „Willenskraft” album, which contains some real heavy songs like „Scorching Breath”, „Bloodstained Prophecy” or „The Hunt”), a lot of people started puzzling what comes next. As it came out that we will record WERK 80, a complete album with hits from the eighties, a lot of people said we went absolutely crazy without even listening a single note from the album. Many of them asked themselves why the hell does a Metal band do a cover album of eighties Pop and Wave classics? But this is IT, this adds zest to it, man! Many ignorant people didn’t get it until now. It is guaranteed not the case that we wanted to become a Pop band and to dissociate from Metal music. This is complete nonsense and in princinple we do the exact opposite of it! We transform Pop and Wave songs into Metal songs and not the other way round. We do our thing and we are not a band that wants to record the same thing over and over. I know a couple of musicians who really envy us for doing something like WERK 80. As WERK 80 became a real seller and entered the charts besides all the prophecies of doom and killjoys, a lot of people suddenly came up to us completely enthusiastic, the same people who once threw their hands up in horror! I got inquiries from all different places if I’d like to do similar projects with other bands and producing it. And many bands have tried shortly after that to do similar coverversions, as nowadays, when it got clear two years ago, that we work on another WERK 80 album again. Who cares, it doesn’t matter to us now as in the past. In fact we think it’s much cooler that for example in Wacken, thousands of raised fists from Metal heads from all over the world scream along „Shout” and the other songs. Or as we cleaned up as headliner of the biggest Gothic event in this world, the Wave Gotik Treffen in Leipzig(Ger)! Who would ever had thought before? So, now we thought it is a good idea after ten years to record an album like this, to play compositions from others in our typical band style. In those days as we recorded the first WERK 80, fans, DJ’s and people from wherever in the music business were coming up wish lists to record an album in the same way. Even many bands and musicians came to us asking for a following up of this uncommon project due to its success. But we didn’t want to do it in those days. It was clear to us that if we want to do something like this again, we need to have a break in between and also we had to receive new and fresh musical input. One idea was to boost the classical parts on the album and to substitute the electronic elements with them which was a lot of work but well worth it! The songs we were picking out quite fast as we had made expierences on the first WERK 80 and we had the idea in the background to produce the „darkside” of WERK 80 as you can see on the artwork very well!

Tosso: Also already after finnishing the first Werk 80 record in 1997 there were some songs undone that we would have liked to do. They were always in our minds and now, ten years after the first Werk-Album, we thought it would be a cool idea to com out with a second part of the story. Since there is a decade time between these albums i dont think that you can accuse us of producing just a sell-out-afterburning-follow up album to Werk 80 I.

In what sense the Werk 80 II. is different from the cd published in 1997?

Alex: First of all we are happy to finished that album, after we toured nearly in 40 countries in the last years with our two bands Atrocity and Leaves’ Eyes and on top we had this big production with a symphony orchestra and choir for the „Werk 80 II” record! So it took all a little bit longer than exspected but we are very happy with the result. Many fans allover the world asked for another WERK 80 album, so here we are and we had great fun producing it as well as it contains new ideas and elements, too!

Tosso: On the first WERK 80 we had incorporated electronic elements in the sound. This time we wanted to have a more organic and also bombastic sound. Thats why we chose to record the album along with a full orchestra and choir. The recording process was also different. It took us more than 2 years to record the new album, due to massive touring we stopped studio work several times, went on tour, came back and continued working on the new album.

On what bases you selected the tracks for the album?

Tosso: Like i said there already were some songs left from 1997 like „Fade to grey” or „Relax”. Everybody in the band added some of his favourite 80ies songs to this record. For example i am a big fan of the „Neue Deutsche Welle” (New German Wave). So after we did „Der Mussolini” on Werk 80 I, this time we took „Keine Heimat” from Ideal.

Alex: Like on the record there are quite some songs that have a cult following in eighties pop and dark wave.

There can be more classical elements found in this record, for example the strings and te chorus. What is the reason for building these into the work?

Tosso: We wanted to have a huge production with a full and broadened sound. So the idea came to our minds to do everything with a whole orchestra and choir, to give this bombastic feeling.

Alex: The dark side of WERK 80.

Have all the covers been born recently, or you’ve been working on some tracks continually until you had enough for an album?

Tosso: we chose a group of about 15 to twenty songs. Then we started to work on them and in the process it became soon clear which songs had the quality to be on the record. So we were working on every song for quite a while.

Alex: I can’t remember any other tracks we tried, I think we did all the 12 songs we chosen.

I guess you are also fans of these bands whose tracks you chose. Why do you think those legendary bands were so successful?

Alex: Of course I used to be a big Metal head in these days!!! I was a total underground freak, too. And in the late 80’s early 90’s I also organized the first Death Metal festivals in Germany, Belgium and Paris! When I was a teenager I was kicked out of school once beacuse of my „metal attitude”, so that means much more to me than anything else! But besides that there were some dark and atmospheric songs especially the Wave and Electro stuff with heavy Synthiebasses which I found quite interesting. After all, Pink Floyd are my great heroes and they more or less influenced many of these Synthiebands. I just always missed the heavy guitars, that’s why you get them now! The German cult act DAF is a great example for this, even if we didn’t interpret them this time, but they really did some extreme songs. That’s why we played „Der Mussolini” and some other songs on the first WERK 80. One thing which I again recognized by doing this WERK 80 II album is for sure: many songs of the eighties were done in great detail and done in an opulent way if you consider the technical possibilities of these days. One should give respect to that either you like them or not. Not for nothing is it claimed that even the Mainstream music of the eighties was done with ambitious arrangements. I had a good friend who belonged to the New Wave scene for a while and listened to Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Visage etc. She often visited me at home with her friends. That’s why I knew some songs from the scene, too.

Tosso: I think in the beginning of the eighties there were some really dark and atmospheric pop songs from bands that had a very distinct attitude, for example Frankie goes to Hollywood, the same with Human League or DAF. That may explain the fascination and success of these bands and why we still like them.

The record has an extraordinary sounding and perfect voice. In which studio was it recorded, and how the stuff contributed to the completion of the cd?

Alex: Thank you very much! We recorded the album again at our Mastersound Studio, where I also produced a lot of other bands like Elis, Bloodflowerz, End of Green, Belphegor, Midnattsol just to mention a few. I love the work as a producer so of course I also produce our own bands Atrocity and Leaves’ Eyes. This production was massive we had like 100s of musicians involved and to record them all of course. For most of the classical guys this was the first time to record something for a metal act! Very interesting situations came up when two worlds clashed into each other the metal world and the classical world hahaha

Can you say something about the bonus track? What may come after such great songs?

Alex: It’s the song „Feels Like Heaven” which is another duet with my wife Liv Kristine and me. Actually when Liv moved to Germany 10 years ago they played the song quite often on the radio and Liv said if we ever would make another WERK 80 record we should do this song. Never thought bacj in the 80s that we ever would record a track like this, but like with „Send Me An Angel” another son which I never thought we would work it out on the first WERK 80 it functions pretty well!

Are you planning a new studio album s well? Or you are not dealing with new songs these days?

Alex: Of course, my friend hahaha we are having several plans and ideas. First we will do something with my sister again I guess. Like mentioned before we did that Ethno Metal Release in 1994 / 1995 „Calling The Rain” with a lot of acoustic and atmospheric stuff on it, very unusual for a extreme Metal band like us especially that period of time. We want to make a follow up album after such a long time because we composed some really nice tunes and we would like to work with Yasmin again. But we have also plans for a very dark and heavy trilogy in the vein of the Atlantis album! So you better watch out! And last but not least, most of our backcatalogue will re issued as well when the WERK 80 II comes out!!

What do you expect from the album?

Alex: I hope the people like it of course! In Germany the single „Smalltwon Boy” had already several chart entries and the fans like it as we hear from the clubs, webpages and so on. We hope to bring the WERK 80 live show in as many countries as possible!

Congratulations to the new record and I wish you all the best!

Alex: Thank you very much, and thanks for the support—we hope you all enjoy the new WERK 80 II record!

Tosso: Thanks and see you on tour!
