Üdvözöllek Magyarországról, a Kronos Mortus webzine nevében. Még csak az év elején járunk, de számomra már van egy esélyes az év albuma trófeára. Bevallom a Dominion előtti munkáitokat eddig nem ismertem, de már dolgozom a mulasztásom helyrehozásán. Veronica, had kérjelek meg, mutasd be a zenekart! Hogy sikerült egymásra találnotok, az élet mely területéről érkeztetek?
Helló, Köszönjük, hogy gondoltatok ránk! A Benedictumot Pete Wells gitáron, Chris Shrum bassszuson, Mikey Pannone dobon és Tony Diaz billentyűkön alkotják. A Benedictum rövid története:
A gitárosunk, Pete Wells és én már egy ideje írogatunk számokat. Elérkeztünk egy olyan pontra, hogy gondoltuk megpróbálunk egy demot összerakni. Craig Goldynak mindig tetszett, amit csinálunk és sikerült olyan számokat szereznünk, melyek mögé, úgy érezte, beállhat. Bemutatott Jell Pilsonnak (Dokken, Dio, Foreigner) a Locomotive Records-nál, aki az első két albumunk, az „Uncreation” és a „Season of Tragedy” producere lett.
A legutóbbi albumunk a Frontier Recordsnál jelent meg, a címe pedig „Dominion”. A producer Ryan Greene volt (Megadeth, NoFX)
Azt mondanám, hagyományos és power metált játszunk egy kicsit keményebb vonalon… remélem az olvasóknak tetszeni fog.

Hihetetlen, hogy mennyire változatos a lemez. Az ember csak kapkodja a fejét. Látszik, hogy ötletekben nem szenvedtetek hiányt. Voltak dalok, amelyeket kénytelenek voltatok kihúzni a tracklistából?
Köszönjük a megjegyzést, de éppen hogy az ellenkezője történt. Az albumhoz nem voltunk tele ötletekkel, és az új tagokkal és az új producerrel rengeteg olyan új ötlet született, melyeket be kellett építsek a Benedictum-ba. Szóval annyira nem voltunk termékenyek, de voltak számok, melyek nem kerültek fel az albumra. Sokszor kellett elölről kezdenünk, mert nem volt meg a számban az a lüktetés, amit szerettem volna, de nagyon örülök, hogy tetszik a változatosság, ez volt a terv 🙂
Pete mennyi lehetőséget ad a dalszerzés folyamatában felvonultatott ötletek felhasználására? Vagy lehet, hogy tévedek és a kérdést inkább így kellett volna feltennem: Veronica mennyire engedi a többieket kibontakozni? Mi is az igazság?
Áá, igen, V tábornok… ez lennék én. Őszintén szólva Pete a Benedictum zenei mozgatórugója én pedig a dallamokért, hangszerelését és dalszövegért felelek. Az új albumon viszont sok számot hoztak Chris, Mikey és Tony is. Szerintem ezen az albumon inkább bandaként dolgoztunk. Mindig ugyanúgy dolgozunk, én meghallgatom a riffeket kiválasztunk bizonyos részeket, azokon pedig elkezdünk dolgozni.
Pete és Te vagytok a Benedictum gerince, alappillére. Mellettetek jöttek-mentek a zenészek az elmúlt években. Ennyire nem egyeztek az elképzelések? A jelenlegi felállást mennyire érzed életképesnek? Mindenki egy irányba tolja a banda szekerét?
Néhány év múltán a változás elkerülhetetlen, legalábbis nálunk. Nem félreértések, vagy nézeteltérések miatt, inkább az élet miatt. Eddigi pályafutásunk során voltak már munkahely változtatások, családi ügyek, költözések, stb. Elég stresszes időszakok ezek, ráadásul két külön városban is élünk, a banda egyik fele San Diegoban, a másik pedig Phoenixben. Próbáljuk csinálni a Benedictumot és úszunk az árral. Remélem, ez a felállás már tartós lesz.
A női rock énekes szerepe nem újdonság. Az elmúlt évtizedek során többen is letették névjegyüket a kemény zene oltárára. Direkt tartózkodtam a „gyengébbik nem” kifejezés használatától, már csak azért is, mert még ilyen karizmatikus, letaglózó egyéniségű női frontemberrel, mint Veronica Freeman nem találkoztam. Honnan jön ez a rengeteg energia? Mikor döntötted el, hogy énekesnő leszel?
Mindig is egy kicsit „robbanékony” voltam, hehe. Az egész zene és előadásmód az energiáról szól, az energiaáramlásról. Erre pedig a metál a legtökéletesebb eszköz. Nem akartam énekes lenni, és beletelt egy időbe, hogy komolyan vegyem, Craig Goldy-é az érdem, hogy rábeszélt!
Mikor megtaláltam a „hangom”, hogy úgy mondjam, egyre jobban beleszerettem a metálba, és az abban rejlő energiába. Szerintem az energiám a metál szeretetéből ered.
IMÁDOK koncertezni, úgyhogy szeretnék már látni egy hosszú koncertlistát, de még mindig várok… és várok, hehe.
A vasparipák, amelyek a benzint, és a négylábúak, amelyek a zabot eszik szintén közel állnak szívedhez. Melyik márka mellett kötelezted el magad és hány cm3 –en, mekkora lóerővel döngetsz az országutakon? Ha jól sejtem, saját istállót tartasz fenn. Mennyi lovad van? Milyen fajták? Mennyi időt tudsz velük tölteni?
Jelenleg egy Bandit 600 és egy ZRX1100 motorokon gurulok, de sajnos nem én vagyok a tulajdonosuk. A célom, hogy enyémek legyenek és annyit motorozhassak, amennyit csak lehet.
Illetve, ha már a szabadidőt kérdeztem: túl vagy-e már a családalapításon? A szeretteid mennyire képesek tolerálni a zenekarral kapcsolatos munkálatokat, a turnézással járó utazásokat?
Nos, szerintem ezt úgysem fogja látni, úgyhogy őszinte leszek :). Ez egy kétélű kard, a férjemnek tetszik, hogy bandám van és koncertezünk, de amikor arra kerül a sor, hogy tényleg menni kéne, akkor már nincs annyira oda tőle.
Jelenleg nem tervezek gyerekeket, elég stresszes az életem így is!
Az énekstílusod izgalmas, a repertoárod széles terjedelmű. Mely zenekarokat, kiket hallgatsz szívesen?
Van, hogy szeretek metált hallgatni, de van, amikor csak nyugalomra vágyom, olyankor klasszikus zenét hallgatok, vagy hasonlót.
Napjaink zenei palettáját hogy tudnád jellemezni? Milyen folyamatokat tapasztalsz? Szerinted merre tart a rockzene jövője?
A zene mindig változik, belül mégis ugyanaz marad. Úgy tűnik, ez egy körforgás, és mindig visszatér a gyökereihez, majd újból leszakad onnan és átalakul. Nehéz megmondani, merre tart, örökké fejlődik. Az internet terjedésével elözönlötték a bandák a színteret. Rengeteg zene van…
Az elmúlt években több turnén és fesztiválon is felléptetek. Melyek voltak a legemlékezetesebb helyszínek? A szakmából kikkel ápoltok nagyon jó kapcsolatot?
Igen, sok fesztiválon játszottunk és készen állunk még többre.
A legemlékezetesebbek a Gods of Metal és a Wacken voltak, de mindegyik voltak különleges élmények.
A közeljövőben van esélye egy magyarországi koncertnek?
Ha rajtam múlna, már szállnék is fel a gépre, hogy menjek. Az idei évet még nem látjuk át, várakozunk… De csak hogy tudjátok, nagyon szeretnék odamenni!

Welcome from Hungary, we are Kronos Mortus webzine. We have just started the year, but I already have a strong candidate for the album of the year trophy. I’m not familiar with your previous works but I’m trying hard to make up for the lost time. Veronica, please introduce the band. How did you meet and what do you do in the everyday life?
Hey thanks for thinking of us and we are honored to be a part of your webzine! Benedictum are
Pete Wells on Guitar, Chris Shrum on Bass and Mikey Pannone on Drums and Tony Diaz on keyboards. I guess you could call this a brief history of Benedictum:
Our guitarist Pete Wells and I have been writing songs together for quite some time.
We had reached a point where we felt we wanted to give one more shot at putting together a really good demo and trying to get some sort of deal going a few long years ago and Craig Goldy (Dio/Giuffria) had always been interested in what we were doing and we finally came up with some songs he really felt he could get behind. He then introduced us to Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Dio, Foreigner) who then took us on as our Producer for the first two albums “Uncreation” and “Seasons of Tragedy” on Locomotive Records.
Our latest album is out on Frontiers Records and is called “Dominion” and is produced by Ryan Greene (Megadeth, NoFX)
I would say we play tradition and power metal but with a slightly harder edge so…. I hope your readers will enjoy what we have to offer.

This album is so varied, seems you didn’t lack in ideas. Were there tracks that you needed to leave out from the album?
Thanks for that comment but it was a bit of a contradiction in a way. We did not go into this album with as many fully formed ideas as before and with new members and a new Producer Ryan Greene we were confronted with a lot of new ideas that I needed to integrate into what I believe to be “Benedictum”. Even though we were less prolific there were indeed some songs that did not make the album. We had to go back to the drawing table on a number of occasions because there was a certain vibe that I felt was important to capture but I am really glad you like the variety of songs, that was planned… 🙂
Does Peter let the others use their own ideas as well when songwriting? Or perhaps I am mistaken and should ask the question this way: Does Veronica let the idea of the other’s prevail? Which one is the truth?:)
Aah, yes General V… that would be me. To be honest Pete has been the musical driving force with Benedictum and I do the melodies, arrangements and lyrics. On this album in particular there were a lot of song ideas and pieces provided by Chris and Mikey and Tony. I would say on this album there was more band wide input than on the others. The way it works though is still the same, I hear some of the riffs and there will be certain sections and areas that just flip a switch so to speak and then we take those and build on them.
Pete and you are the spine and bases of Benedictum. You’ve had several musicians on your side through the years. What’s the cause of this many changes in line up? How stable do you consider the current lineup? Are you together in the band with one purpose?
After these past few years, at least for this band, change seems to be inevitable. It has not been due to any contentiousness or bad feeling but more just life changes. Over our history as a band, there have been employment changes, changes with families, moves and the list goes on. It is a bit stressful at times and now that we live in 2 cities basically, half of us in San Diego and the other half in the Phoenix AZ area that presents some challenges of its own. But we are determined to keep the music of Benedictum going and I realize that we need to go with the flow. I hope this line up stays put but I have come realize that change happens.
The role of a female rock vocalist is not that big news nowadays. I didn’t use the term gentler sex cause I think Veronica Freeman is so charismatic and overwhelming front member. Where do you draw this amount of energy from and when did you decide to become a singer?
Hmmmm, I guess I have always been a bit “sparky” LOL. A lot of the whole music and performing thing is about energy for me, the flow of energy and Metal is such a great vehicle for that. I didn’t start out to become a singer to be honest and it took me a while to really get serious about it, but again I need to credit Craig Goldy for talking me, or tricking me into to it!
Once I found my “voice” so to speak, I became more and more enamored with the idea of Metal music as that particular way of expressing that energy. I think the energy just comes from the excitement and the passion I have for it.
I LOVE to perform live which is why this particular time is frustrating for me personally. Would love to see a long list of shows on the horizon but am still waiting… and waiting LOL
You like the iron steeds that eat petrol and the four legged ones as well. What brand, cm3 and horsepower do you own? If I’m right you have a stable as well. How many horses do you have and how much time can you spend with them?
Right now I have a Bandit 600 and a ZRX1100 I will attach a picture of both but the saddest thing is that I do NOT own horses right now. That is my goal though, to have them again and spend as much time as I can riding.
While we are at private life: are you over starting a family? Do your loved ones tolerate the work of the band, and touring?
Hmm well if he isn’t going to read this then I can be honest :). It is like a double edged sword at times, my husband likes the “idea” of the band and shows etc but when reality hits.. It is an adjustment as it sometimes is for the other members and their other halves. Seems like an exciting and great idea until we have to leave and then ?????
Don’t plan on having any children, I have plenty to stress me out as it is!
Your singing style is so exciting, what bands do you like to listen?
There are times when I like to listen to Metal and there are times when I just want to chill and maybe listen to some Classical music or something that has a different vibe to it.
What’s your opinion about today’s musical palette? Which way do you think rock music goes?
Music is always changing yet always at its core remaining the same. It appears that it goes in cycles always stemming back to its roots then branching off again but always morphing into different aspects of itself. Really can’t say where it will go.. but it is forever evolving. I think that with the internet etc we are inundated with bands we would never hear before. There is a lot of music out there…
You played on several festivals last year. Which were the most memorable venues? Do you have some really good contacts in the profession?
Yeah we have played a lot of festivals in the past and we are really ready to play more in the future.
I would say Gods of Metal and Wacken were some of the most memorable but we have had special moments at them all.
Any plans on coming to Hungary?
If it were up to me, we would be boarding a plane right now, heading your way. As what seems to be the theme of this year for us.. we wait and see. Just know we would LOVE to be there!
