Hello Richard! Nagyon ütős csapatot hoztál össze magad köré! Hogyan jött létre a Charred Walls of the Damned?
Nagyon köszönöm! Igen, nagyon büszke vagyok a bandára és nagyon szerencsés vagyok, hogy ilyen nagyszerű emberek vannak benne. Az elmúlt 5 és fél évben, míg New York-ban éltem, rengeteg zenét írtam. 1992 óta gitározok és a New York-ban töltött éveim alatt rengeteget gyakoroltam, naponta kb. 2 órát. Dobolok is minden nap, de mostanában inkább a gitárra koncentrálok. Néhány éve elég sok szám jött össze, hogy album legyen belőlük. Így összeszedtem egy bandát és elmentünk a stúdióba.
A legjobb embereket akartad magad köré csoportosítani? Könnyen meggyőzted őket?
Igen, szerencsére Jason, Tim és Steve nagyon jó barátaim, így egyszerű volt őket meggyőzni, hogy csatlakozzanak. Először Jason Suecof-t hívtam fel, akivel már 1999 óta barátok vagyunk. Jason és én 2001 óta írunk dalokat, mióta Jason megalapította az Audiohammer Studios-t. Mindig szó volt arról, hogy egyszer alapítunk egy bandát és végre megláthatják az emberek, hogy Jason milyen nagyszerű gitáros és csodálatos producer. Tim-et 2003 óta ismerem, mikor elkészítettük a Glorious Burden albumot és együtt turnéztunk. Tim nagyszerű fickó és ő a kedvenc énekesem. Nagyon jó volt együtt turnéznunk és jó barátok lettünk, így nagyon örültem, mikor elfogadta Charred Walls of the Damned-ben való közreműködést. Steve-t 1997 óta ismerem, és mióta hallottam a Sadus-ban nagy rajongója vagyok a basszus játékának. A Death’s Individual Thought Patters-ben van a valaha volt legjobb basszus játék. Steve nagyszerű ember és jó volt együtt stúdiózni vele.
Az album a Metal Blade kiadónál jelent meg. Direkt velük akartad piacra dobni a lemezt, vagy egyszerűen ők voltak a legszimpatikusabbak?
Egy pár éve barátok vagyunk már Brian Slagel-lel. Nagyszerű fickó és egy heavy metal legenda. Amikor felajánlotta, hogy csatlakozna a bandához, nagyon izgatott lettem, szerintem nagyszerűen illik a bandához. A Metal Blade mindig támogatta a heavy metal-t és nagyon sok banda van akikért rajongok: Amon Amarth, King Diamond, Cannibal Corpse, és nagy megtiszteltetés, hogy egy kiadónál lehetek ilyen bandákkal. Az volt a célom, hogy ennél a kiadónál legyek és ez egy nagy megtiszteltetés számomra.
A 9 dal szerintem szenzációs. Ki milyen ötleteket hozott, mennyire volt beleszólása a többieknek a dalírásba?
Köszönöm a kedves szavakat! Én írtam és vettem fel a zenéket az Audiohammer Studios-ba (Orlando, Florida) való bevonulásunk előtt. Van egy felvételi beállításom a laptopomon, amin lejátszhatom a gitár, basszus, dob és ének ötleteket. A dalszövegeket is én írtam. Bár, én írtam mindent, izgatottan vártam milyen ötleteket tesznek hozzá Jason, Tim és Steve. Jason és én bevonultunk a stúdióba egy elő-próbára, végigmentünk a számokon és Jason-nek rengeteg jó ötlete volt, mint pl. hogyan rövidítsünk meg bizonyos részeket vagy változtassunk riffeken. Szóval Jason-nek nagy része volt a lemez elkészítésében, nagyszerű producer és zenész, sokkal jobbak lettek a számok. Tim-nek és Steve-nek is sok ötlete volt és mindenki nagyszerűen tudott együtt dolgozni, amik jobbá tették a demón levő számokat.
Jason nem csak gitározik az albumon, hanem ő végezte a produceri munkákat is. Mennyire előnyös így készíteni a lemezt, hogy a zenekar végzi ezt a feladatot?
Jason nagyon tehetséges mindenben, amit csinál. Dalszerzés, gitározás és mivel jó barátok vagyunk és általában mindenben egyet értünk, ez nagyon megkönnyítette a munkát. Az, hogy egy banda tag a producer is nagyszerű dolog, mivel tudja, hogy kell szólnia a számoknak. Ha Jason-nek van egy ötlete a gitár, basszus vagy énekrészhez, csak eljátssza és megmutatja nekünk.
Mennyire érzel párhozamot a Control Denied és a Charred Walls of the Damned zenéje között?
Szerintem a zene és az ének nagyon hasonlók. Biztosan hatással vannak rám azok a bandák, ahol játszottam eddig, mint a Death, Iced Earth és Control Denied. Szeretem a progressive metal-t és imádom a dallamos vokálokat, így ilyen hatásokat is akartam a zenénkben. Hatással van rám a Death Metal és Black Metal is, így ezeket az elemeket is szerettem volna felhasználni. Bár, mikor írtam a számokat, egyáltalán nem gondoltam ilyenekre, hogy milyenre szeretném, az albumot. Azt akartam, hogy természetesen jöjjenek a dalok, de mivel olyan bandákat hallgatok, mint az Iron Maiden, Dismember, King Diamond, Wratchild America, Malevolent Creation, Death and Immortal, ezek a hatások biztosan jelentkeznek a zenében, amit írok.
Tim hangja tökéletesen illik a zenéhez és remekül énekel, mint sok más lemezen. Ettől jobb vokalistát el sem lehetne képzelni. Szerinted egy másik énekessel is ennyire tökéletes lehetne az album?
Nem, teljesen egyetértek, szerintem Tim a tökéletes énekes a bandához. A hangja a súlyosság és dallamosság tökéletes átmenete. Tim nagyszerű munkát végzett az albumon és csak 5 napjába telt felvenni az énektémákat! Hihetetlen fickó és teljesen profi a stúdióban, ráadásul vicces is. Tim és én New York-ban voltunk az elmúlt hétvégén a CWOTD kiadásának party-án és nagyon jól éreztük magunkat. A party-n felmentünk a színpadra és egy Hixon nevű bandával eljátszottuk a Living After Midnight-ot a Judas Priest-től, ami nagyon jó volt!
Hosszútávon mennyire fog működni a project? Élő fellépések és több album is várható?
Nos, már készen van hat szám a következő albumhoz, amit már nagyon várok! A számok hihetetlen jól szólnak és olyan jól éreztem magam a többiekkel, hogy alig várom a visszatérést, valamikor az idén adjuk ki az új albumot. Remélhetőleg játszunk néhány európai fesztiválon is és turnéra is indulunk, minden a beosztástól függ. Hamarosan találkozok néhány ügynökséggel, hogy leszervezzük a show-kat. Nagyon várom, a színpadra lépést és eljátszhassuk a számokat az albumról a rajongóknak!
Elég sok lemez jelenik meg manapság a metal életben. Azt hiszem nektek sikerült kiugrót alkotnotok. Te mivel érzed többnek ezt a művet, mint a többi metal albumot?
Nagyon köszönöm! Nagyon kedves! Nagyon büszke vagyok erre az albumra, én csak egy heavy metal albumot akartam csinálni, amit minden rajongó szerethet, attól függetlenül, milyen metált szeretnek. Vannak benne Death Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal és minden féle metál elemek, így mindenki találhat benne olyat, ami tetszhet neki. A számokra is nagyon büszke vagyok, olyan számokat írtam, amik jók, súlyosak, dallamosak és fülbemászók. A Heavy Metal nagyon sokat adott nekem az életem során, sok boldogságot szerzett mikor 10 éves voltam, és most nagyon örülök, hogy egy olyan albumot sikerült készíteni, ami másoknak is tetszhet.

Hello, Richard! You gathered a very strong group around you! How did Charred Walls of the Damned form?
Thank you very much! Yes I’m very proud of this band and very lucky to have such great guys in the band! I’ve been writing a lot of music in the past five and a half years that I’ve lived in New York City. I’ve been playing guitar since 1992 and in the years that I’ve lived in New York City I’ve been practicing guitar a lot more, about two hours a day. I still play drums every day too but have been concentrating a lot on guitar lately too. A few years ago I realized that I had enough songs for a full album. Then I got really excited and decided to put together and band and go back into the studio.
You wanted to gather the best people around you? Was it easy to convince them?
Yes luckily Jason, Tim, and Steve are very good friends of mine so it was fairly easy to convince them to join my band when I was forming it. I first called Jason Suecof, who I’ve been friends with since 1999. Jason and I have been writing songs together since around 2001 when Jason first built Audiohammer Studios. Jason and I have always talked about forming a band together so now I’m really excited that we have a band together and people can finally see what an amazing guitar player Jason is, as well as being an awesome producer. I’ve known Tim since 2003 when we did the Glorious Burden album and tour together. Tim is such a great guy and he’s my favorite singer. We had a great time together on tour and became good friends so I was excited when he said that yes he wanted to be in Charred Walls of the Damned. I’ve known Steve since 1997 and I’ve been a huge fan of his bass playing since I heard him with Sadus and I also think his bass playing on Death’s Individual Thought Patters is one of the greatest bass playing performances ever. Steve is an awesome guy and we had a lot of fun together in the studio.
The album was released at Metal Blade. Was it your intention to sign with them or is it just that they were the most sympathetic ones?
I’ve been friends with Brian Slagel for a few years now. He’s a great guy and a heavy metal legend. When he offered to sign my band I was so excited and I think it is the perfect label for this band. Metal Blade is a label that has always supported heavy metal and there are so many bands that I’m a big fan of on the label like Amon Amarth, King Diamond, Cannibal Corpse, and it’s an honor to be on the same label as these bands. It was definitely my intention to sign with Metal Blade and I’m so honored to be on their label.
These nine songs are awesome, I think. Who brought the ideas, and how much word did the others have on the music?
Thank you very much for the nice words about the songs! I originally wrote all of the music and recorded all of the demos for the album before we went into Audiohammer Studios in Orlando, Florida. I have a recording setup on my laptop computer and would play guitar, bass, drums and also sing vocal ideas for all of the songs. I also wrote all of the lyrics for the album. Even though I wrote all the music I was very excited for Jason, Tim, and Steve to put their ideas in while we were in the studio to make the songs even better. Jason and I got together for pre production for two days at Audiohammer Studios and during that time Jason and I went through all of the songs and Jason had so many great ideas for the songs like where to shorten certain parts or change the riffs. So Jason had a really big part in the writing of the album, he’s a great producer and songwriter and really made these songs a lot better. Tim and Steve also had some great ideas as well and everybody really combined their ideas in the studio to make the songs much better than they originally where on the demos that I had recorded.
Jason is not only playing guitars on the album, he also did the producer’s work. What advantages does it have to have a band member do the producer’s work?
Jason is extremely talented at everything he does, producing, songwriting, guitar playing, and it made it so easy to have him doing all of those different things because Jason and I are such good friends that we usually agree on everything. Having a band member as a producer is great because when they have an idea for a song they know exactly what needs to be done to make it happen. If Jason had an idea for a guitar part or bass part or vocal part, he could just play it and show us right away and we could instantly see that it was a great idea.
What parallels do you feel are there between the music of Control Denied and Charred Walls of the Damned?
I think the music and the vocals are both very similar. I’m definitely influenced by all of the bands that I’ve played in like Death, Iced Earth and Control Denied. I love progressive metal and I love melodic vocals so I definitely wanted elements of that in this band. I’m also influenced by Death Metal and Black Metal too so I wanted elements of that in CWOTD too. Although when I was writing the music for this album I didn’t think about exactly what I wanted to sound like, I just wanted the music to come out naturally, but because I listen to bands like Iron Maiden, Dismember, King Diamond, Wratchild America, Malevolent Creation, Death and Immortal, the influences definitely show in the music that I write.
Tim’s voice suits the music perfectly and he sings just as well as he did on any other album. One couldn’t imagine a better vocalist. Do you think that the album could be so perfect with another singer?
No I totally agree, I think Tim is the perfect singer for this band. I think his voice has the perfect blend of melody and heaviness. Tim did such an amazing job on this album and it only took him 5 days to record his vocal parts! He is incredible and so professional in the studio and he’s such a fun guy to hang out with too. Tim and I both were hanging out in New York City this past weekend for the CWOTD album release party and we had an awesome time. At the release party for our album we both got on stage and played Living After Midnight by Judas Priest with the band The Hixon, it was so much fun!
How good do you think this project will function on long terms? Are live performances and more albums to be expected?
Well I already have six songs written for the next album and I’m so excited! The songs sound really incredible and I had so much fun in the studio with Tim, Steve, and Jason that I can’t wait to get back in the studio, hopefully we’ll be recording the next album sometime this year. We will definitely be playing live too, probably this summer. We’re hoping to do some European festivals and some touring, depending on all of our schedules. I’m meeting with some booking agents very soon to start setting up some shows, I’m so excited to get onstage and play this album for all of the fans!
Lots of albums are being released nowadays in metal, but I think you have managed to create something outstanding. Why do you feel this album is more than all the other metal albums?
Thank you very much! That’s very nice of you to say! I’m so proud of this album and all I wanted to do was to make a heavy metal album that all heavy metal fans could love, no matter what kind of metal they’re into. There’s elements of Death Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal, every kind of metal, so there’s something in there for every metal fan! I’m so proud of the songs too, the most important thing for me was that we write really good, heavy, melodic, catchy songs and I think we’ve done that! Heavy Metal has given so much to me throughout my life, it has made me so happy since I was 10 years old and now I’m very happy to put out a heavy metal album that hopefully other people will enjoy too!
