A kérdésekre Jes Steineger válaszolt.
Üdv! Nagyon tetszik az új albumotok, mióta érlelődnek ezek a dalok, illetve mikor vettétek fel őket? Hogyan történik egy szám megírása nálatok?
Jes: Mindent még 2005 előtt. A Salt and Passage 7-et 2005 nyarán írtuk, és valamikor 2006-ban vettük fel. 2007-re jó kis riffeink születtek ahhoz, hogy elkezdhessük megcsinálni az Ox alapjait. Két, három évig tartott az írás. Úgy 9 órányira lakok a többiektől, úgyhogy nehéz mindent összerakni, hogy stúdióba vonulhassunk. A folyamat Ellis-szel és velem kezdődik. Emailezgetünk, riffeket küldünk egymásnak és gyűjtögetünk. Ha már van egy rakattal, szétválogatjuk a riffeket és kapunk 3-4 csoportot, melyek összeillenek. Aztán elkezdünk gondolkodni a felépítésen, hogy merre haladjon a nóta és papírra vetjük őket. Ha papíron megvan, elvisszük Jr-nek és nekilát az alap dob ütemeknek. Van, hogy nem is adunk neki riffeket, csak egy sor számot, hogy írjon rá dobot; így átfedés van a riffeknél és nem követ minket. Az EP-nél ezt a folyamatot követtük. Jr-nek vétó joga van, ha a szám felépítésével valami nem stimmel, de nem sűrűn él ezzel a joggal. Ha mindenkinek tetszik az ütem, a dinamika, demo-t készítünk, melyet elküldünk Sean-nek. Neki is van vétó joga néhány dolgot illetően, úgyhogy ha a szám nem az ő elképzelései szerint szól, akkor változtatunk rajta. De ez ritkán történik. Legtöbb esetben a minimális változtatás szükséges, hogy Sean megkapja amit szeretne. Az Ox-nál így írtuk a dalokat. Mint mondtam, messze lakok a srácoktól, Kansas-be csak ritkán jutok el, hogy feljátsszuk a demót és a számokat. A legtöbb számot az Ox-on csak néhányszor játszottuk össze, mielőtt feljátszottuk Ed Rose-nál, a producerünkkel. Az egyik számot pedig ott a stúdióban írtuk, az 1 hetes felvétel alatt. Elég gettós megoldás, de mit tehetsz, ha így kell dolgoznod?
Mit szerettek jobban, stúdiózni vagy turnézni? Legjobb koncertélmény?
Jes: Egyaránt szeretem a stúdiót is és a show-kat is. Mindkettő különböző élmény, így nem tudok választani köztük. Jómagam pedig nem vagyok a „legjobb” fickó. Emlékezetes show-ink voltak: előzenekara voltunk a Bad Brains-nek, Godflesh-nek, Today is the Day-nek és két fesztiválon is játszottunk most, (Scion és egy floridai fesztiválon), ezek nagyon emlékezetesek voltak.
Mit jelent a lemez címe, az „OX”?
Jes: Az állat. Szimbolikus értéke van, így különféle tolmácsolásban tudja a hallgató hallgatni a lemezt.
Miről szólnak a szövegek?
Jes: Próbáltuk ezt a hallgatóra hagyni. Nehéz Sean-nek ilyen különböző emberekből álló bandának dalszöveget írni; ez mindig is így volt. Nem vagyunk egy elvont banda, így Sean-nak olyan szövegeket kell írnia, melyek őt is megérintik és el kell érnie, hogy a szavakban mi is találjunk magunknak valami mondanivalót. Így nézve, van néhány alap és univerzális elmélkedési téma a felvételen: emberi kapcsolataink a piaccal, emberi kapcsolataink egymással, küzdelmeink a kapcsolatok megromlásával, stb. Mivel Sean-nak a kihívás, hogy olyan dalszöveget írjon, melyeket mi is magunkénak érezzük, helyet ad (remélhetőleg), hogy a hallgató is találjon valami személyes kapcsolatot vele.
2005 óta van együtt ez a felállás, előtte volt egy kisebb szünet a banda életében. Mi volt ennek az oka?
Jes: Nos, rengeteg dolog történt, ami miatt most szívesebben csinálnék valami mást az életemben. Fura időszak volt ez az életemben. A sok gyötrődés, hogy a többiek másik bandát, másik céget, új családot alapítottak, vitt arra, hogy kilépjek. Mind csináltunk ezt-azt 1999 és 2005 közt, ami segített stabilizálni az életünket, olyan módon, hogy a Coalesce egy rész-idős dolog lehessen. Így számunkra egy egészséges űr keletkezett, még ha erre soha nem is gondoltunk volna.
Mi volt hatással rátok, mikor elkezdtétek az egészet, illetve az évek folyamán?
Jes: A helyi underground szcéna inspirált, 100%-ig. Mindig is szerettem a zenét, de a Coalesce mindenképpen egy mellékterméke a korai kapcsolatomnak az underground zenei szcénában. Szerettem, ahogy a dolgok összeálltak fiatalkoromban. Valójában még mindig ez inspirál, mert úgy gondolom, van valami szabadság abban, amit szabadon „punk” tradíciónak nevezhetünk. Ez inspirál, hogy azt tegyek a színpadon, amit csak akarok; hogy élvezhessem ezt a szabadságot.
Jellemeznéd pár szóval az eddigi anyagaitokat? Valami történet velük kapcsolatban? Melyik a kedvenced?

Jes: Wow. Hát ez jó kérdés. Valójában, nem igazán emlékszem mindegyik albumunkra. A lemezek szorosan kapcsolódnak életem bizonyos érzelmeihez, úgyhogy ki van zárva, hogy kedvencet emeljek ki közülük. A korai 70-es évek nagyon fiatal és laza volt. Give Them Rope mocskos és tömény volt; mint az akkori életem. Nem tudom, hogy valaha is meghallgattam elejétől a végéig. Functioning on Impatience akkor született, mikor a Coalesce egy nagyon olajozott gépezetként működött. Ha kényszerítenének, hogy válasszak kedvenc számot róla, akkor a 012 lenne az, de csak mert sokkal jobb is lehetett volna, ha több időnk lett volna vele foglalkozni. Mindig jó kedvvel tölt el írni az egész Coalesce cucchoz. Ellis mindig azelőtt ad címet a daloknak, mielőtt megkapnád a vicces kiejtést és kontextust: „Questions to Root out Fools” korábban „Shithouse Rat” volt; és a „The Comedian in Question” pedig „Balls.” Ez azt jelenti, az új EP-n van egy szám aminek a címe: Brand New Balls. Tudom, hogy mikor az emberek megtudják a show-k számcímeiket megtudják emberek, nem tudják mi a pokol történik… haha.
Várható tőletek feldolgozás EP valamikor a jövőben? A „There is Nothing New Under the Sun” hatalmas lett!
Jes: Nem tervezünk több EP szám készítését. Mindig igyekszem új ötleteket adni az élő műsorhoz, de sok új anyagunk van most, szóval eltelhet egy kis idő, mire újakat csinálunk.
Milyen zenéket hallgatsz mostanában? Tudnál ajánlani pár érdekes bandát?
Jes: Most került hozzám az új Mastodon és nagyon tetszik. Azt hiszem, hogy a Black Keys és Arcade Fire kivételes bandák, szívesen játszanék ott… haha. Nem tudom, Motörhead, Johnny Cash, a Mars Volta, Alison Krauss, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pink Floyd; sok ilyesmit hallgatok olvasás közben. Nem nagyon vagyok benne a szcénában, hogy eleget tudjak a fiatal tehetségekről. Szeretném támogatni egy barátom bandáját Franciaországban, a Stuntman-t. Nagyszerű fickók, akik megérdemlik a hallgatóságot, úgymint egy másik francia banda, a Chère Catastrophe is. A Monotonix-ot is csak ajánlani tudom. Ha mondani kéne egy bandát, amilyennek a Coalesce-t mindig is akartam, hogy legyen, akkor ez az a banda. Azok a srácok teljesen szabadok, mentesek minden tehertől, elképesztő.
2009-ben kivel adnátok ki split lemezt?
Jes: Nos, sok olyan banda van akiket szeretek és szeretnék velük split lemezt készíteni, de nem igazán van több időnk a dalszerzésre. És csak azért, hogy legyen egy split lemez, nem akarok számokat összecsapni. Annyi jó banda van, akikkel csinálnék split-et: Harvey Milk, Baroness, Kylesa, Agoraphobic, Torche, Circe Takes the Square, the Narrows; játszok a gondolattal, hogy új splitet csináljak a Converge-el, Napalm-mal és Today is the Day-el. Rengeteg jó banda van, és ha benne lennének, csinálnék velük splitet. De mondom, csak akkor, ha lenne időnk rá.
Jártatok már Magyarországon? Esetleg egy koncert idén/jövőre?
Jes: Sosem voltunk Magyarországon, és sajnos ezen a nyáron nem is jutunk el oda. Mivel a Coalesce számunkra egy rész-idős dolog, nem csinálhatunk egy teljes 5-6 hetes turnét. Ez azt jelenti, hogy az ügynökünknek döntenie kell, hogy hol játszhatunk. Reméljük, vissza tudunk jutni Európába jövőre. Ha így lesz, megpróbálunk bepótolni olyan városokat, amik most kimaradnak. Remélhetőleg Magyarország is köztük lesz.
Köszönöm az interjút, el szeretnél még mondani valamit?
Jes: Semmi sincs. Nagyon köszönöm az érdeklődést az interjú iránt. Remélem, láthatunk néhány magyart a nyáron; talán Ausztriában vagy más, szomszédos országban. Elnézést, hogy ilyen kis idő alatt nem juthatunk el mindenhova.

Greetings! I very much like your new album, how long did you „brew” the songs and when they were recorded? How do you write a song?
Jes: Everything is post-2005. We wrote the Salt and Passage 7′ during summer 2005 and recorded it sometime in 2006. By 2007 we had a good set of riffs to start writing song structures for Ox. So there was about two or three years of brewing. I live about 9 hours away from the other guys, so it’s difficult to get everything in order before going into the studio. The whole process starts with Ellis and I. We email each other riffs and start a collection. Once we have a big pile we separate which riffs sounds interesting together so that we have a good group of 3 or 4 that „fit.” From there we begin thinking about the structure of where we want the song to go and eventually write that all out on paper. Once the song is structured on paper, we bring it to Jr and starts thinking up drum patterns for the basic parts. Sometimes we don’t even give him the riff, but just a series of numbers for him to write a beat for; that way we can overlap the riffs and he’s not following us exactly. We have tried that process more on the EP that we just recorded. Jr has veto power if something in a song structure doesn’t feel right, but he hardly ever uses this power. Once we’re all happy with the structure, the beats, and the dynamic, then we demo the song to give to Sean. He has veto power on certain issues to, so that if a song doesn’t work for what he has in mind, then we alter it. But this rarely happens. Most times the alterations are minimal for Sean to get what he needs. With Ox, that was how we wrote the songs. Again, since I live far away from the guys I am only able to get to Kansas City on limited occasions to actually play and demo the songs. Many of the songs we recorded on Ox were only played together once or twice before recording it with Ed Rose, our producer. And one of the songs was written in the studio during the week of recording. We’re pretty much a ghetto operation, but what can you do when things are part-time?
What do you like more, touring or studiowork? Best gig?
Jes: I love the studio and the shows equally. They are quite different experiences, so I could never choose one over the other. And I’m totally not a „best” kind of guy. I have really memorable shows: opening for Bad Brains, Godflesh, Today is the Day, and the two fests we’ve played recently (Scion and that Fest in Florida) were really memorable.
What does the album title OX stand for?
Jes: The animal. The thing has a wealth of symbolism, so there are any given amount of interpretations that a listener can give the record.
What are the lyrics about?
Jes: We try to leave this up to the listener. It is really difficult for Sean to write lyrics in a band with people as different as us in the band; it always has been that way. We’re not an ideological band, so Sean has to find a way to write lyrics that affect him personally while still providing us the means to locate our own meaning in the words. In that sense, there are some pretty normal and universal themes of reflection throughout the record: our human relationship to the market, our human relationships with each other, our grappling with relational failures, etc. Since the challenge for Sean is to write in such a way that all of us can find ourselves in the lyrics, it opens up a space (hopefully) for the listener to find some personal contact there too.
This lineup is together since 2005 and before that there was a little break in the band’s life. What was the reason for this?
Jes: Well, many of the reasons had to do with me wanting to do other things in my life at the time. It was just a weird time in my life. All my struggles coincided with the other guys starting new projects, new companies, and new families, so it just felt right to call it quits. We all did some things between 1999 and 2005 that helped stabilize our lives in such a way that coalesce could be a part-time thing. So the hiatus was really healthy for us, even if it was never thought of that way before.
What inspired you to start this band and what inspires you the most since then?
Jes: The local underground music scene inspired me, 100%. I always loved music, but coalesce is completely a byproduct of my early involvement in the underground music scene. I see it as a conglomeration of the things I liked in those youthful experiences. That still inspires me actually, because I think there is a specific sort of freedom in what can loosely be called the „punk” tradition. It’s inspiring to do whatever I want on stage; to feel that sort of freedom.
Would you introduce your previous albums with a few words? Is there some funny story about the albums themselves? Which is your favorite?
Jes: Wow. That’s a large question. Actually, I don’t even think I can remember all of our albums. The records are all closely connected to specific sentiments in my life, so there is no way to compare them as favorites. The early 7’s were really young and loose. Give Them Rope was muddy and dense; like my life at the time. I don’t know if I’ve ever really listened to it from start to finish. Functioning on Impatience was written at a time when coalesce was a really well oiled machine. If I were forced to have a least favorite record it would be 012, but only because it could have been so much better if we had taken more time to work with it. There is always a lot of humor underwriting all the coalesce stuff. Ellis always give titles to songs before Sean does, so that we can reference them. They’re actually not that funny unless you get the funny pronunciation and context along with them: e.g., „Questions to Root out Fools” was previously „Shithouse Rat”; and „The Comedian in Question” was previously „Balls.” That means there is a new song on the EP that is called „Brand New Balls.” I know when people get our set lists from shows they wonder what the hell is going on… haha.
Do you plan making an EP just with cover songs? There is Nothing New Under the Sun was awesome!
Jes: No plans to make any more cover song EPs. I always try to introduce new cover ideas for the live sets, but we have a lot of new material now, so it may be a while before we do covers again.
What bands do you listen to nowadays? Can you recommend a band?
Jes: I just recently picked up the new Mastodon and like it a lot. I think the Black Keys and Arcade Fire are exceptional bands that I wish I could play in… haha. I don’t know, Motörhead, Johnny Cash, the Mars Volta, Alison Krauss, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pink Floyd; I listen to this stuff pretty much weekly while I’m reading. I’m not really plugged into the scene enough to know who the young upstarts are. I’d like to put a plug in for a friend’s band in France called Stuntman. Great guys who deserve a listen as well as some other French friends in a band called Chère Catastrophe. I also highly recommend the band Monotonix. If ever there were a band that I wanted coalesce to be like, it’s that band. Those guys are totally free and unencumbered; fucking incredible.
With whom would you make a split record in 2009?
Jes: Well there are a lot of bands that I like these days and would love to do splits with, but I just don’t see us having any more time to write. And I don’t want to just put any song on a split for the sake of doing it. There are so many good bands I’d love to do splits with: Harvey Milk, Baroness, Kylesa, Agoraphobic, Torche, Circle Takes the Square, the Narrows; I’d be game to even revisit splits with Converge, Napalm, and Today is the Day. There are a ton of good bands, and if they were into it, I’d totally do splits with them. Again, if we could find the time to write some tracks worthy of a split with those bands.
Have you been in Hungary? Can we expect a gig sometime soon?
Jes: We’ve never been to Hungary and unfortunately we won’t be able to make it there this summer when we’re in Europe. Since coalesce is a part-time thing for us, we can’t do a full 5 or 6 week tour like we’d want. That means our booking agent has to make tough decisions about where we play. We hope to get back to Europe again within the next year or so, however. If we do, we will try to play many of the countries we are missing this time around. Hopefully Hungary will be one of those countries.
