Hell „Decadence”! Mivel én a „3rd Stage of Decay” lemezzel ismertem meg a zenéteket és ráadásul most szerepeltek először az oldal hasábjain kérlek, meséljetek mi minden történt a bandával a 2003-as alakulásotoktól egészen mostanáig?
Sok dolog történt 2003 óta, de az alapdolgokat összefoglalva azt mondhatom, hogy a jelenlegi tagok: én, Metallic Kitty (extrém ének), Kenneth Lantz (első gitár), Simon Galle (második gitár), Joakim Antman (basszusgitár) és Erik Röjås (dobok). Azonban nem ez volt a felállás a kezdetek kezdetén. Tizenhat évesen csatlakoztam egy névtelen bandához, és ez a csapat volt, amit később Decadence-nek neveztem el. Akkor három tagból állt, akik közül már senki sincs a bandában. Azóta három tagcserénk volt, ami visszautal a harmadik albumunk címére: „3rd Stage of Decay”. Amikor összekerültünk ezzel a felállással, a Decadence megalapulása óta először éreztem, hogy teljesek vagyunk. 2003 óta három albumot és egy demót adtunk ki, a negyedik album felvételei pedig most zajlanak. Olyan zenét játszunk, amit mi melodic thrash metalnak hívunk, ami olyan, mint egy híd a thrash és a melodic death között. Ez a műfaj úgy írható le, mint thrash metal a melodic death metal súlyosságával, amit extrém női ének és hörgési technikák, valamint thrash metal sikolyok jellemeznek. Ezen hatások kombinációja a thrash metal egy új felfogásával speciális hangzást nyújt, ami meghatározza a Decadence-t, és bizonyára ez a legfontosabb dolgok egyike, ami kifejlődött 2003 óta.
Eddig három lemezetek jelent meg. Miben látjátok a legfőbb különbségeket ezek között? Mindig megvolt a zenei irány vagy az idő múlásával fokozatosan fejlődött ki?
Minden bizonnyal azt mondanám, hogy a zenei irányzatunk fejlődött az idők során, míg meg nem találtuk a Decadence saját hangzásvilágát. Melodic death metallal kezdtünk, és egyszerűen death metalt játszottunk harmóniákkal. Ekkor alkottuk meg a rólunk elnevezett Decadence albumot. A második lemezünk, a The Creature sokkal kísérletezősebb volt és eltávolította azokat a melodic death korlátokat, amelyek a Decadence-en voltak. Ez a death és a thrash keveréke és sokkal agresszívabb. Amikor eljött az idő a 3rd Stage of Decay-hez, egy olyan stílusban találtuk magunkat, amit mi melodic thrash metalnak nevezünk. Egyszer egy rajongónk így magyarázta el, hogy a „The Creature” a lázadás és a gyűlölet belső oldalát és a szenvedély utóhatása, hiszen fokozatosan átmegy az életünk agresszív és intenzív oldalából a melankolikusba, míg a „3rd Stage of Decay” megtestesíti a saját megszilárdulásunkat a bandával és az erősebb felünket mutatja- azt hiszem, ez egy kiváló leírás. A 3rd Stage Of Decay egy stabilabb album, ahol bizonyára megtaláltuk saját magunkat, a zenénket és azt, amiért kiállunk.
Tudom eléggé elcsépelt kérdésnek tűnhet és már biztosan sokan megkérdezték tőletek, de azért én is veszem a bátorságot. Miért pont női énekessel dolgoztok? Mindig ez volt az elképzelés vagy csak a sors hozta így? Szerintetek mennyire illik egy nő az ilyen zenéhez és milyen a mai megítélése az ilyen dolgoknak?
A mi esetünkben ez csak úgy jött. Amikor 12 éves voltam, akkor vettem először gitárt a kezembe és keményen dolgoztam azzal a szándékkal, hogy metal gitáros leszek. Aztán egy egybeesés és egy sugallat hatására 16 éves koromban felvettem a kapcsolatot egy bandával, aki énekest keresett. Azelőtt próbálgattam a hörgést és az extrém sikolyokat otthon, de csak kedvtelésből, semmi komoly okból. Tehát amikor eljöttem a meghallgatásra 2003-ban, sosem gondoltam volna, hogy az a banda oda fejlődik, amit ma Decadence-nek hívnak, és hogy én leszek az énekes. Szerintem ez nem a nemekről szól, ha valaki tud énekelni, akkor énekeljen, függetlenül attól, hogy férfi vagy nő. A női frontemberrel rendelkező metál zenék eléggé gyakoriak manapság és a tiszta, angyali hangú gothic bandáktól és ilyesmiktől egészen az extrém bunkó gore grindig, és amíg ez az elterjedés létezik, addig nem hiszem, hogy bármi rossz is sülne ki belőle. Hiszen, ha például minden női frontemberű csapat gothic banda lenne, akkor biztosan megkapnák a „női metal” bélyeget, ami ebben az esetben tényleg rossz lenne.
Ahogy nézem rengeteg tagcserétek is volt az évek folyamán. Mi okozta ezeket a változásokat, zenei vagy inkább hozzáállásbeli problémák voltak? Mindig sikerült megtalálni a megfelelő embereket a zenekarhoz?
Egyes esetekben a zenei technikai tudásról szólt a dolog, máskor meg a zenekar személyi légkörével kapcsolatos képességek voltak előtérben. Nyilvánvalóan azok az emberek, akik korábban voltak a zenekar tagjai, nem a megfelelőek voltak, de ezzel a felállással többek lettünk, mint egy zenekar, olyanok vagyunk, mint egy család.
Svédország mindig is hangos volt a metál zenétől. Milyennek látod a mostani és a régebbi színteret? Vannak zenekarok, akikkel jóban vagytok? Kik voltak hatással a zenétekre?
Pillanatnyilag, legalábbis Stockholmban, ahol élünk, sajnos nem tűnik annyira erősnek. Számos klub zárt be a támogatás hiánya miatt, ami tényleg kár. Csak azokat a bulikat támogatják, amelyek nagyobbak, híresebb zenekarok lépnek fel, és nem az underground területét. Az underground bandák tömegesen jelennek meg, de a klubok eltűnnek, és a helyi színtér számára ez nagy problémává válik. Annyira sok jó banda van itt és sokan közülük sosem fogják megkapni az esélyt, hogy megmutassák magukat, ami nagy kár. Természetesen a helyzet lehet más különböző városokban, mint például Göteborgban. A zenei hatásaink azonban túlnyúlnak Svédország határain. A Decadence fő számírói (én és Kenneth Lantz) mindketten rajongunk a ’80-as évek Bay Area környéki thrash metalért, és itt vannak a gyökereink is. Csak hogy néhány bandát említsek, amelyek hatással voltak rám, ezeket mondanám: Metallica, Death, Vader, Kreator, Testament, Megadeth, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Annihilator, Tankard, Sodom, Slayer, Pantera, Exodus stb. Mint látható, a lista leginkább különböző thrash metal csapatból áll néhány kivételtől eltekintve.
Hogy egy kicsit a „3rd Stage of Decay”-ről is beszéljünk, megmondom őszintén nekem nagyon tetszik. Nagyon jó témák, kemény riffek és elsöprő lendület jellemzi az egész lemezt. Hogyan születnek meg a dalok? Van egy konkrét személy, aki felel a zenéért vagy teljesen közös munka folyik?
Köszönjük szépen. Jó ezt hallani. Mint már az előző kérdésnél elmondtam, én és Kenneth Lantz a fő számírók a Decadence-ben, így vagy én írom a számot és ő asszisztál, vagy fordítva. Általában a nyerseség és a sebesség mellett áll ki, míg én inkább a kísérletezős ritmusok és a harmóniák pártján vagyok. Amikor mindezeket kombináljuk, megkapjuk a melodic thrasht, amiről már beszéltem, és azt gondolom, a 3rd Stage of Decay a legjobb példa erre.
Általában a zenétekkel kapcsolatban a dallamos thrash metal kifejezést szoktál használni. Ez szerintetek mennyire helytálló ez, mennyire tükrözi a valóságot?
*Nevet*. Igen, azt hiszem, eleget beszéltem erről.
Hogyan kerültetek kapcsolatban a Massacre Records-al? Elégedettek vagytok eddigi munkájukkal? Eléggé híres kiadóról van szó és rengeteg ismert banda dolgozik náluk. Milyen érzés egy ilyen csapat részének lenni?
A Massacre Recods jó együttműködő partner volt eddig és rászánták az időt, hogy meghallgassák és megértsék, hogyan is működik a Decadence, amit mi nagyra becsülünk, tehát a Massacre Records a megfelelő üzlet számunkra, szó szerint. Alig várjuk, hogy láthassuk, mit hozunk össze velük.
Turnéfronton hogy áll most a Decadence? Milyen emlékeitek vannak az ezelőtti koncertekről? Mesélj egy legrosszabb és egy legjobb élményt a bulikról?
Bizonyára van egy csomó emlékünk, jók és rosszak is. Az egyik legjobb emlékem az első nagy koncertünkről származik, amit Svédországban, Stockholmban rendeztek 2005-ban, ahol felfedezték Decadence-t minden olyan dolog miatt, ami a koncert előtt, alatt és után történt. A rossz emlékek szintén ott vannak, mint a betegségek, balesetek, amikor elkezdődnek a turnék, de vannak poénos esetek is, mint amikor Olaszországban, Rómában volt koncertünk 2006-ban. Annyira égető forróság volt ott az olasz nyár közepén, hogy mindenem és a latex cuccom szó szerint lecsúszott! *nevet* Nehéz időszak volt a koncert alatt, hogy fent tartsam a nadrágomat és jót röhögtünk utána. Szerencsére minden a megfelelő helyén maradt a végéig.
Mik a távolabbi tervek a zenekar életében? Mikor várható az új lemez és milyen zenei irányba fogtok továbbmenni? Vannak már dalvázlatok az új koronghoz?
A legközelebbi tervünk, hogy kiadjuk a negyedik nagylemezünket és utána ismét útra keljünk. A zenei irányzat még mindig a Decadence, a szó minden értelmében, de ha egy szóval kellene összefoglalni, azt mondanám: erős. A 3rd Stage of Decay-t új szintre visszük, de minden olyan aprósággal együtt, ami Decadence-re emlékeztet és élesíti a határokat a melodic thrash körül. Oh, igen, vannak új számaink… *kacsint*

Hell „Decadence”! Because I got familiar with your music from the 3rd Stage of Decay album and you’re appearing on our site for the first time, please tell us what happened with the band since it’s formation in 2003!
Well, lots of things have happened since 2003 but to summarize the basic things I could say that the current members are: (me) Metallic Kitty (extreme vocals), Kenneth Lantz (1st guitar), Simon Galle (2nd guitar), Joakim Antman (bass) and Erik Röjås (drums). This was not the line-up we had from the beginning though. At the age of 16, I joined a nameless band and this band is what I later named Decadence. It only consisted of three members then, none of which are in the band today. Since that time we had three line-up changes which lead back to the title of our latest album „3rd Stage of Decay”. When we got together in this line-up I felt for the first time since the start of Decadence that we were complete. Since 2003 we have released three albums and one demo and are currently in the studio recording our 4th album! We play something that we call Melodic Thrash Metal which is like the bridge where Thrash and Melodic Death meet. This genre can be described as Thrash Metal with the heaviness of Melodic Death Metal, characterized by extreme female vocals and growl techniques as well as Thrash Metal screams. The combination of these effects along with the new touch of Thrash Metal gives a specific sound which is what defines Decadence and this is definitely one of the main things that has developed since 2003!
You’ve released three records so far. What do you think, What are the main differences between them? Did you always have the musical direction for the band or it just evolved over time?
I would definitely say that our musical direction evolved over time until we found Decadence”s own sound. We started off as a Melodic Death Metal band just playing Death Metal with harmonies. This was the time when our self-titled album „Decadence” was created. Our second album „The Creature” was more experimental and removed the „Melodic Death-limits” that we had on „Decadence”. It is a mixture of Death and Thrash and more aggressive. When the time was due for „3rd Stage of Decay” we found ourselves in the genre that we call Melodic Thrash Metal. A fan once told me his explanation that „The Creature” shows the aftermath of violence and the inner side of rage and passion as it gradually goes from aggressive and intense to the melancholic side of our lives, while „3rd Stage of Decay” manifests our consolidation with the band, showing traces of the stronger part of us – and I think that”s a great description! „3rd Stage of Decay” is the most stable album where we”ve definitely found ourselves, our music and what we stand for.
I know this might be a worn-out question and you’ve been asked of this by a lot of people, still I’d like to ask it. What are the reasons behind working with female vocals? Was it always the concept or it just came? In your opinion how does a woman fit this kind of music and how is this viewed today?
In our case it just came. When I was 12 years old I grabbed a guitar for the first time and I worked hard with the intention of becoming a Metal guitarist. Then, by coincidence and impulse, when I turned 16 I contacted a band searching for a vocalist. I had only been growling and extreme screaming at home for fun before, nothing serious. So, when I came to audition in 2003 I never thought that band would develop into what is now known as Decadence with me holding the microphone. I think it”s not about gender in this case, if you can sing you can sing – regardless of whether you”re a man or woman. Female fronted Metal is quite wide nowadays in the sense that there are bands all from clean angelic voiced Gothic bands and everything to extreme grunt Gore Grind and as long as that spread exists then I don”t think anything bad can come out of it. Because if, for instance, all female fronted bands were Gothic bands then it would definitely get the mark of „Female Metal” and in that case it would be really bad.
As I’ve seen you had lots of line-up changes through the years. What caused these changes? Were they musical or something to do with attitudes? Did you always find the right people for the band?
In some cases it was about technical music skills and in other cases it was about the attitude to the band and personal chemistry. Obviously, the people we had in the band before where not the right people but now with this line-up we”ve grown to be more than just band members, we are like a family.
Metal was always loud in Sweden. How do you see the scene today and in the past? Any bands you’re friends with? Who inspired your music?
At the moment, at least in Stockholm where we live, it doesn’t seem so strong unfortunately. Many clubs have closed down due to lack of support which is shame. The only shows that are supported are the bigger shows with famous bands, but not the great Underground scene. The Underground bands are coming in flows but the clubs are disappearing and this is turning to be a big problem for the local scene. There are so many great bands out there and many of them never get the chance to show themselves which is really a shame. Then of course, the situation might be different in cities such as Gothenburg! Our music inspiration goes beyond Sweden though! The main song writers in Decadence (me and Kenneth Lantz) are both fans of the great 80″s bay area Thrash and that is where the roots to our music lie. To mention some of the bands that have been inspiring to me I could say: Metallica, Death, Vader, Kreator, Testament, Megadeth, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Annihilator, Tankard, Sodom, Slayer, Pantera, Exodus and so on. As you can see, the list mostly consists of various Thrash Metal bands with some exceptions.
So to talk about „3rd Stage of Decay” I’d like you to know that I really like it. The whole album has very good themes, cool riffs and it has an overwhelming momentum. In what way the songs are written? Do you have someone who’s in charge or it’s a team project?
Thank you very much, I”m glad to hear that! Well, as I said in the previous question, me and Kenneth Lantz are the main song writers in Decadence so it”s either me writing a song and he co-works it, or the other way around. He usually stands for the rawness and speed while I”m more into the experimental rhythms and harmonies. When we combine all that we get the Melodic Thrash that I talked about before and I think „3rd Stage of Decay” is our best example of it.
Usually your music is described as melodic trash metal. What do you think about that? And is this correct?
*Laughs* Yes, and I think I”ve talked enough about that!
How did you end up at Massacre Records? Are you pleased with their work? It’s a famous record label and a lot of well-known bands are working with them. How does it feel to be the part of a team like that?
Massacre Records have been a great cooperating partner so far and they took the time to listen and understand how Decadence works and we appreciate that very much so Massacre Records was the certain deal for us, literally. We look forwards to see what the future will bring together with them.
What about tours? What memories do you have of them? Tell us about a memory you’re fond of, and one that was among the worst while on tour.
We definitely have a lot of memories, both good and bad from being on the road! One of my best memories is from our first big show that was in Stockholm, Sweden in 2005 where Decadence was practically discovered due to everything that was going on both before, during and after the show. Bad memories are also there like illnesses and accidents while begin on the road but there are also funny things like when we had a concert in Rome, Italy in 2006 it was so steaming hot there, in the middle of the Italian summer and all, and my latex outfit was literally sliding off! *laugh* I had a hard time during that concert to keep my pants up and we had a good laugh about it afterwards! Fortunately it all stayed in the right places in the end!
What are the plans for the future? When do you release the new album and what kind of musical direction will it take? Any songs yet?
Our nearest plan is to release our 4th full-length album and after that to head out on the road again. The musical direction is still Decadence in every sense of the word but if I was to summarize it with one word I would say: intense. It will be „3rd Stage of Decay” taken to a new level but with all those bits and pieces there to remind you of Decadence and to sharpen the edges around Melodic Thrash! Oh yes, we have new songs… *winks*
