Despise You Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

A kérdésekre Rob válaszolt.

Úgyhogy a javamra vált!

A holtak élnek! Figyeljetek!

Ebből lett aztán a Westside Horizons cd.

Mióta aktív a csapat? Hogyan jött létre a Despise You?

Ezeket a számokat kifejezetten ehhez írtuk. Semmi régi vagy eddig felhasználatlan anyag. Alapjában véve, jammelgetésekből jöttek az ötletek. Old school!

Ami titeket illet, a spliten 18 dal szerepel tőletek, hogyan foglalnád össze mindazoknak a Despise You zenei világát, akik még nem ismerik, nem hallották a csapatot?

Kirobbanó hangok, fülbemászó riffek, punk szellem. Semmi trigger, vagy mű dolog. Kibaszott dühös és őszinte, amennyire csak lehet.

Véleményem szerint a korai Napalm Death, Righteous Pigs hatása érződik a dalokon, erről hogy vélekedsz? Klasszikus grindcore bandának nevezhető a Despise You?

A legtöbb ember a Power Violencehez hasonlít minket.

Hosszú távra terveztek a Despise You-val? Mik a zenekar jövőbeni céljai, tervei?

ENGLISH VERSION:

Rob answered the questions.

Rob, I think, your past is unavoidable and I’d like to begin the interview with this. Mid ’80s you appeared in the Necrophiliac, then in the Evil Dead, which is more well-known among the fans. How did the Evil Dead start up?

The band for the record was called Necrophilia. I left that band right as Evildead started up in late February 1987. Basically Mel decided to form the band because he was unsatisfied with the way Abattoir was going. He wanted to write faster, more aggressive songs.

Is it true, that you were the technician of Danny Anaya, the drummer of Abattoir and you attracted the attention with your achievement during the sound check?

Yes. Mel says that he saw me (and the other roadies at the time) soundchecking at an Abattoir show in Mexico, and that the soundman told him I was better than Danny; their drummer at the time. Mel told me after and i laughed, but i ended up being in Evildead as soon as we got back from that show. So it definitely worked out for me!

Why and when did you leave the Evil Dead? What’s your opinion: was the Evil Dead predestinated for a better future?

I left in late ’89 after they fired Albert from the band. Al was my best friend at the time and even though he encouraged me to continue, it was never the same without him. So, I left about 2 months later. After which Al and I with our friend Bob Rangel, formed Rise. This was in early 1990. As for the future, Evildead is currently back together playing shows and writing new songs. SPV Records plans to remaster the debut album for a re-release this year sometime. New demo soon. The Dead Live! Stay tuned!

Actually you are in the Despise You (too). Is it your band? Firstly is it a band or a project?

Despise You started as a side project to record a few 7″‘s for Chris Pessimiser’s label. It was just a fun, no pressure or expectations type thing. After selling out of all the 7″ pressings, Chris decided to compile them and add some other tracks that were leftover from previous sessions. This became the Westside Horizons cd. We did our first ever show in 2007 at LA’s Murderfest in California. Since then we have been quite active live, playing shows consistently. We recently recorded for a split with Agoraphobic Nosebleed for Relapse which will be out this April.

Since when is the group active? How did it start up?

It was started in ’95 by Phil Vera (Crom/16) on guitars, Jerry Flores (Excruciating Terror/Bloody Phoenix) on guitar, Frank from Stapled Shut on bass, myself on drums and Chris Elder on vocals. The female vocals were done by a friend of Chris and Phil named Lulu. As i said before, we never played live until 2007. Newer/current members include Chris Dodge (ex-SPAZZ) on bass and Cynthia Nishi (ex-GASP) on vocals.

In April you’re going to release a split album with Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Is this going to be the first official release of the band?

Well, yeah first release on a bigger label like Relapse, although the first official release was the Westside Horizons cd on Pessimiser/Theologian Records.

Whose idea was the split album? How did this possibility come?

It was an idea that started after we met Scott Hull at Murderfest in ’07. Him and Jay Randall offered us a spot on one of the various splits they had planned with Agoraphobic Nosebleed.

What should we know about the origin of the songs? Did you take brand new tracks to the album or are there remastered versions of older ones?

All these songs were written specifically for this release. No old or unused material. Basically they all come from just jamming and collaborating with each other. Old school!

About you, there are 18 tracks from you. How can you sum up the musical world of the Despise You for people, who haven’t known, haven’t heard the band yet?

Basically its just bursts of noise, catchy riffs, punk spirit. No triggers or falseness anywhere. Pissed as fuck and as honest as possible.

In my opinion, I feel the influence of the early Napalm Death, Righteous Pigs on the songs, what is your opinion on this? Can we call the Despise You a traditional grindcore band?

Yes possibly. We all grew up on classic grind like Napalm and more importantly bands like No Comment and Terrorizer. Most people refer to us as Power Violence. I like to think we’re just Punk band with metallic tendencies, hah.

Do you plan for a long time with the Despise You? What are the future purposes and plans of the band?

Yes, like I said before, there’s never any pressure to do anything. So, as long as we are still having fun, we plan on sticking around for a while.

Rob, thank you the interview, please share your last thoughts with the Hungarian fans, please!

Thanks for the interview. We’re looking forward to playing in Europe sometime soon.
