Dew-Scented Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

Sziasztok! Mit gondoltok a mostani felállás terméséről?

Leif Jensen: Úgy érted először amikor a banda megalakult a 90-es évek elején?

Elégedettek vagytok a keveréssel?

Leif Jensen: Igen, végülis ezért csináltuk a demó előfelvételeket, ahogy korábban is említettem.

A borító teljesen magáért beszél.

állati szép formában került a polcokra…

Biztosan terveztek Európa turnét!? Jöttök Magyarországra is?

Leif Jensen: Ja, annyit fogunk játszani amennyit csak lehetséges. Épp most végeztünk egy király kis turnéval a Bolt Throwerrel, most pedig jöhetnek a nyári fesztiválok. Király lenne több showt is adni a gyönyörű országotokban!

Eddig milyenek a visszajelzések az új korongot illetően? A tengerentúlon mennyire robbantatok be?

Üzentek valamit a magyar hallgatóságnak?

ENGLISH VERSION:

Hey there! First of all, let me just congratulate on your new release! The record was made by an almost completely new formation, and the result is pretty „cruel”. What do you think about the results of the current lineup?

Leif Jensen: Thanks a lot! We are actually pretty excited about „Invocation” and I think the album shows just as much of the new energy and refreshing positive vibe that we were having within the band when we worked on writing the material. Yes, we had a pretty dark and insecure time around early 2008 so that we needed to change things drastically in terms of line-up of the band in order to allow things to continue. That lead to the split with our former guitarist-duo and we also needed to search for a permanent drummer, as we only had a live-session player around that time. So yeah, here we are with a new team, but very motivated and hungry again. We put a lot of time, sweat, dedication, rehearsing and attention into the new material and I think it shows easily on „Invocation”. I am extremely happy with the final album myself and can’t wait to get out there and play the material live some more…

How did you all get into Dew-Scented?

Leif Jensen: You mean originally when the band started in the early 90’s? Well, it was a slightly different line-up back then, but we were basically just a bunch of local metal fans that played instruments and wanted to get together to share good times and write the heaviest material ever possible. The simple goal was to create the music we wanted to listen to ourselves and I think the approach hasn’t changed much, even after so many years!!! I have been there since the very beginning of the band and joined after the first 2-3 songs were written, but the guys didn’t have a band name or structure yet. Alex (bass) came on board in 2002 after the „Inwards” release as we needed someone for a longer European tour with Cannibal Corpse and things happened to work out in the way that he stayed with us. The new guitarists, Michael and Martin, joined the group in 2008 when we needed some fresh blood and we got really lucky to find very talented but also motivated players so easily. Marc-Andree, the drummer, has been with us since early 2008 as well, but he had played with Alex in their previous band Obscenity before and also toured with Dew-Scented for about half a year in 2003-2004 already, when we needed a live-drummer back then. So yeah, this is the short version of the story.

How long were in studios, and how long did it take to write the songs?

Leif Jensen: Oh, it was quite a long process, all in all. We needed to first find the right atmosphere within the new band set-up and also get to know each other better as players or especially as composers. So yeah, we took all of 2008 and a large part of 2009 to write the material on „Invocation”, but we nevertheless still continued playing live-shows and doing some small runs of touring. We tried to keep the changes within the band „internal” and not let people from the outside pressure us much, as we knew the new songs needed to be a large step forwards in order to receive good appreciation and support. So basically in the Summer of 2009 we already entered Soundlodge Studios with producer Jörg Uken to do a 5-songs pre-production for „Invocation” in order to test the new line-up and our recording approach together, but at the same time we also wanted to evaluate the studio itself as well as mainly the new songs. We are pretty critical with our own material and wanted to make sure it’s all a 100% ready to be launched to the public as follow-up for the 2007 album „Incinerate” and continuing the tradition of the band smoothly. We really liked the result of this demo sessions and then basically confirmed album recordings for early 2010. We entered Soundlodge Studios again early February and stayed for around 5 weeks doing everything from scratch and in old-school fashion there: recordings, mixing and mastering, all in one go and with timely pressure, so that it kicked out own asses all along the way. I think this helped the album coming out pretty compact and aggressive. I mean, the material is still quite fresh as we only delivered the master to the label/s in mid March and by now in May it’s already out everywhere. Pretty cool to me.

I really like the sounds of the new album. It’s massive enough, stout and yet brazen. Are you satisfied with the mixing?

Leif Jensen: Yeah, absolutely. Jörg did a great job! We already recorded „Incinerate” with him at Soundlodge Studio but we didn’t mix the album there last time because we had an offer to use Andy Sneap for that album. This time around we wanted to do the whole process with Jörg and I think the result speaks for itself. Jörg knows the band for long years and the strong parts for each individual musician very well, so that we managed to always keep us challenged and getting our best delivery on tape. I think he has a quite original and super crunchy modern sound in his studios, so that it worked pretty much perfectly for us and our style of music. We definitely enjoyed working with Jörg and look forward to hooking up with him again in the future…

I guess before you went to studio with the songs you did a test how the fans like the new songs, or are you preparing in a different way?

Leif Jensen: Yeah, well, that’s what we had done the demo pre-production for, as I explained earlier. We made sure to play the new songs to local friends but also to people in the music industry and guys in other bands, etc. to get some feedback and heads up on the new songs. It was only after we were happy with the results ourselves that we decided to confirm the album recordings with the studio. We always pre-write all of the material before we enter studios and don’t leave much details uncovered really. The new material is also working out extremely well for live-shows, stressing the more compact and direct approach of the writing. It’s good to see that basically the whole „Invocation” album is playable on shows and we look forwards to taking the music out there!

The cover speaks for itself. Who created it? Was this the main concept?

Leif Jensen: It was once again Björn from www.killustrations.com who created not only the artwork but also the full layouts design for the new album. Björn has worked with/for Dew-Scented since 2003’s „Impact” album and he absolutely knows what we like and what works best to represent our music. I think he did a flawless job on „Invocation” and managed to capture the a cool thrash-vibe from the 80’s school and mix it with a very up-to-date clean and apocalyptic atmosphere. I believe the main concept was to reflect the music’s vibe and its harsh lyrical themes, who are pretty based and triggered by reality and everything that surrounds our lives day by day. I am super happy with how the artwork looks and the merchandise (which Björn designed as well) came out pretty cool as well…

Are you really planning to tour in Europe? Are you coming to Hungary as well?

Leif Jensen: Yeah, we will be playing as much as ever possible. We just finished a cool short run of dates supporting Bolt Thrower and now it’s time for some festivals in the Summer. We hope to have some support tour options lined up for later in 2010 and we would obviously love to return to Hungary as well, as it’s always been a great place for us to play ever since we first came over in 2002 to play Summer Rocks festival with Manowar 😉 We last played in Budapest on the Sziget festival 2008 but unfortunately it wasn’t a very good show for us that day because we were just starting out with the new line-up and also had some severe technical problems on stage that day. We hope we will be able to make up for that soon with some cool next gigs. It would be awesome to play several shows in your beautiful country!

What has been the feedback been so far about your new release? How big of a hit are you in the States?

Leif Jensen: It’s all been very positive and encouraging, really. I think people who understand the band and appreciate the style can figure out the large amount of work and increased attention on details that we invested into „Invocation”. Things should be good for the U.S. as well, but I don’t know if I would ever use a term like „big hit”, really, hahaha. After all, this is underground extreme Metal, always! Anyhow, we have always had some good support from the North American thrashers and hope this will apply to „Invocation” as well. We have a new label in Europe with Metal Blade Records and we work with Prosthetic Records in North America so that we look forwards to seeing how things will do for the new album now…

Would you like to tell anything to the Hungarian listeners? Thanks for the interview!

Leif Jensen: Well yeah, thanks for your support and your time. We have a good amount of friends and longterm followers of Dew-Scented in Hungary so I would like to send them nice greetings here and leave hoping that we will come over soon to play the new songs for everyone. See you soon! Please check out the new tunes and upcoming tourdates by visiting: www.dew-scented.net and www.myspace.com/dewscented Keep it heavy!
