Dismember Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

Üdv a Kronos Mortuson!

The God That Never Was” albumon.

Bevallom, a kedvenc Dismember albumom a sokat vitatott Hate Campaign. Visszatekintve elégedettek vagytok ezzel a felvétellel? Hogyan emlékeztek vissza arra a korszakra?

David még most is azon a régi Ibanez gitáron játszik, amit akkor kapott, amikor belépett a bandába – én akkoriban úgy 16 voltam.

Mely együttesek gyakorolták rátok a legnagyobb hatást?

Mit gondoltok a göteborgi melo-„death” színtérről? És mennyire kedvelitek az amerikai death metált?

Az At the Gates-et nagyon kedvelem! Különösen a „With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness”-et – a korai At the Gates cuccokat nagyon szeretem!

Matti Kärki védjegyévé vált a hangzásotoknak.

Mit gondoltok a svéd death metál általános állapotáról?

Jelenleg nincsenek ezzel kapcsolatos terveink.

Üzentek valamit a rajongóknak? STAY BRUTAL!

No jó… és jegyezzétek meg: Death Conquers All!

Üdv,

ENGLISH VERSION:

Welcome on Kronos Mortus! First of all, I would like to congratulate for the new album, it has been really great! How good are the feedbacks you receive for it?

Hi there! We have got so good feedback from everywhere it seems, i haven’t acctually read even one bad review of the album yet! So we are all very pleased of course, you never know what to expect, even though we were totally satisfied with the songs and everything you never know what people will think about it.

The new album seems to reach back to your old times. Did you want to switch from the more melodic sound of the preceding two albums?

Well, i think Dismember have never left the style we had from the beginning, but i can agree that there is less melodical stuff on the new one compared to the last album „The god that never was” David Blomqvist is responsible for alot of the melodic Iron Maiden sounding stuff in Dismember and he said when we starded to write songs for the new album that he wanted to cut back on the melodic stuff but still he came to the rehearsal room with some stuff that was really melodic so i guess you can’t avoid it sneeking into the Dismember sound. And Dismember have always had melodic stuff in the music even though it was not as prominent on the first album. There will always be this mixture of really raw classic Death metal and the more melodic heavy metal rooted riffs. I really enjoy the combination, it makes the sound more exciting and I think we have a good combination of them both. The new album was also recorded totally analogue without the help of any computers and the sound of the new album is very raw, accustic, live sounding. Whish was excactley what we where looking for. We used the bass player from Entombed . Nico Elgstrand as a sound engineer this time and he had the same vision as we did concerning the sound of the album. He has engineered albums with Entombed, Krux, Merciless etc. before and he is a very talanted guy and also very funny and relaxed so we had a great month in the studio with him.

Does it have some significance that just this album has become your self-titled one? I mean: do you mean it as „that’s the definite Dismember sound”?

It was Matti Kärki’s idea to have the album untiteled, and we couldn’t just come up with a name suiteble for it. But it’s not like its a new era for Dismember or anything. Its not like we’re doing „The black album” with Metallica and going in a new direction now, its basicly the same old Dismember sound you get. If you liked Dismember before you will defenetley like the new one. The songs are all very strong and i have heard from lots of people that this is the best Dismember album in like 10 years, so that feels really good to hear things like that. But this yerar marks Dismembers 20 years as an excisting band, and we also have a different lineup from the previous album but that has nothing to do with that we decided to have no title. And we didnt want to have any title on the album cover, cause the cover itself is so strong and good looking, we are very pleased with how that turned out. The whole booklet looks awesome this time. Much more interesting then Dismember have had in yeras i think, there’s lots of cool pictures taken on tour in different parts of the world and handwritten lyrics and an overall interesting lay out.

What’s your favorite track from the new album?

Ah, thats always hard to choose… But one favorite of mine is „Dark depths” whish is a song with some different stuff in it. It starts off with a catchy midtempo riff and then you have the verse with some dubbel bass drum and maybe a little Celtic Frost vibe to the riff. Then you have the chorus whish is a riff that i wrote whish is kida groovy with very good vocals from Matti. Then there’s the middle section with the D-beat and a more simple punk feel to it. And that song seems to have been going down really good live, even though everybody may not have herad it yet but Dark dephts seems to get a good mosh-pit going almost every time. And that is really important- to have a good reaction from the crowd, you really feed on that and give it back to the audiense.

I admit my favorite Dismember album by now is just the much discussed Hate Campaign. Looking back, are you content with that release? How do you remember that era?

Well, i wasn’t in the band back then. But from what i heard from the other guys that lineup was not so stable, with Sharlee’d Angelo on bass and Magnus Sahlgren on guitar. I know the others are not so pleased with the sound on it, but there is some really good songs there like: Patrol 17 and one of my all time favorites: the title track Hate Campaign.

Everyone agrees that you have such a unique sound that after hearing the first moments of any track one can say that it is Dismember being played. How could you define this unique sound?

Yes, its a very prominent sound, especially the guitar sound is kind of a trademark for Dismember. We use theese old Heavy metal pedals from Boss and that is basicly the secret behind it all, i guess it is also depending of how we play our instruments and the style of the riffs. In the beginning the Sunlight studio was also very important to create this special Swedish sound with bands such as Grave, Entombed and Dismember. I really love that sound, its very charasteristic and massive. But its really funny when you are out playing or touring when people come up to us and ask what kind of equipment we use, and then they see the guitarists old pedals and ask „is that it?” and yeah, it basicly is. None of us in the band is really intesested in having fancy equipment or hanging at music stores and trying out new stuff. David is even playing the same old Ibanez guitar that he got when i was like 16 years old and starting the band. So i think it is because that Dismember have kept the same old stuff from day one makes it sound unique.

Although you are one of the pioneers of Swedish death metal from the beginnings, many of yours fans observe a great respect for more classic-style bands like Iron Maiden in you songs. Which bands have been most influential on you?

Everybody in the band is very much into old heavy metal from the 80’s and 70’s and as you might hear Iron Maiden is a big influens to the melodic parts in Dismember, but also bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Accept etc. You always have the Autopsy and early Death influences as well. We also have other influences that might not be as obvious like Bathory, early Sepultura, Sarcofago, Candlemass etc. I really enjoy listening to music, its a big part of my life. I like to buy records and descover new stuff, or rather: descover new „old” stuff, haha! There’s just not much new stuff that interests me nowdays unfortunatley. I grew up with the heavy metal and thrash from the 80’s and thats still my favorite stuff. On tours we also listen to lots of music, for example on the last UK tour we did, David had all of the Iron Maiden CD’s with him.

What do you think about the Gothenburg melo-„death” scene? And how do you like American death metal?

I really like At the Gates! Especially „With fear I kiss the burning darkness” I really like the early ATG stuff! I wasnt so impressed by „Slaughter of the soul” as lots of others where, Im more into their more darker, twisded style that they first had. I never was much into either In Flames or Dark Tranquility, when it came to the melodic stuff from the 90’s i used to listen more to bands like Unanimated, Dissection or „Unbound” by Merciless. But some of the Gothenburg has got lots of attension latley like In Flames, but i dont think that they are much of a death metal band nowdays. I do like alot of bands from USA like: Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Obituary, Autopsy. But as you can see its bands that have exsisted for a long time, I dont know much about the newer bands though, it doesnt really interests me to check out new death metal bands cause most of the time i dont like their style. But i do like Toxic Holocaust and that is a newer band, they have this old death/thrash style that i like. But i cant say they sound so typical American though.

Matti Kärki has become a trademark of your sound. The question may sound silly, but how does he produce this unusual sort of brutal but at the same time very lively, human death metal vocals? The technique seems to be different from that of most death metal vocalists.

I dont know much about vocal techniques, but i know that Matti, at least live does not strain his throat so much. When you are on tour it must be able to last for a few weeks and that is kinda tough considering the enviroment you are surrounded in all the time with smoke, alcohol and loud music. But i agree that he has a special voice, and i think that is very important when you play Death metal- to stick out from everything else. I’ve heard so many boring death metal vocalist without any persona over the years, to have a good vocalist is very important when you play this kind of music.

With which bands are you closely affiliated in Sweden? Do you know any bands from Hungary?

We are good friends with a couple of bands like: Grave, Unleashed, Entombed,Necrophobic, Nifelheim, Krux, Grand Magus, Death Breath, Demonical and maybe some more i dont remember right now. In 2006 we did a tour called „Masters of Death” together with: Entombed, Grave and Unleashed and that was really cool! Everybody got along really well and we had this rotating bill so there we played in different order every day. The band that we have toured the most with latley is Grave and we get along very well with those guys, with Grave we have done a USA tour, european tour and a shorter tour in Mexico and its great fun every time. Unfortunatley im not familiar with the Hungarian scene, thats a shame really, but when i get there i will try to catch up on that. I know about Tormentor and I met Attila a couple of times… I like to descover bands from the countries we play in. For example when we where in Russia i bought some albums with the old Russian heavy metal band Aria whish i liked alot, even thouhg they sing in Russian. But i think that makes it more exciting in a way.

What do you think about the overall state of Swedish death metal? Could you mention some less well-known great underground bands from there?

There is one pretty new band called Tyrant whish i like, i just got their debut album and it sounded very old and raw. There is also a couple of young demo bands whish i like called Katalysator and Degial whish play old school swedish death meta. But unfortunatley there’s very rare that i get to hear new interesting Death metal bands, and nowdays there is too many bands comming up and its impossible to keep track of everything, back in the 90’s it was possible but now theres just so much more stuff. I dont know many smaller Death metal bands from Sweden, alot of them are maybe doing some demos and then disapear, i guess thats because its so hard for them to get through. Theres not many places here in Stockholm where smaller bands can play. But i think theres a stronger undreground scene with new young thrash bands, cant remember any names but i’ve noticed that the 80’s style of thrash metal is comming backa again, whish i think is cool. I rather have that then some stupid nu-metal shit!l

Plans of having gigs in Hungary?

Right now we have no plans of that. I dont know why we haven’t played there in years, and from what i know the fans there are some crazy people! I know some people who lives in stockholm who are from Hungaria and they keep telling me to try to get Dismember to the Sziget festival, but unfortunatley we haven’t played there yet.

Thanks for the interview. Any message to the fans? STAY BRUTAL!

Thank you! Check out the new album. It will defenetley blow you away if you are into real old school Swedish death metal! It will not make you disapointed. And try to catch us live if you can, im shure we will give you a hell of a show. And next time we are in Hungaria i would like to get some cool albums with old heavy metal from Hungary so please give me some tips on that. OK. And remember: Death Conquers All!

Cheers!
