2005-ben alakultatok, méghozzá olyan ismerős zenészekből, mint Dino (Fear Factory), Tim Yeung (Hate Eternal). Hogyan találtatok egymásra? Mi volt a zenei irány a kezdeteknél?
Nos, a 2005-ös megalakulásnál én még nem voltam a banda tagja. Tavaly július végén csatlakoztam, de nagyjából ismerem a történelmüket, mivel Dino-tól én is ugyanezeket kérdeztem, amikor beléptem. Dino feldobott néhány dobos nevet a banda keletkezésekor. Majd találkozott Tim-mel a színpad mögött, egy show-n és számot cseréltek, összejöttek párszor, elkezdtek jammelgetni és a többi, azt hiszem, történelem :). Tudom, hogy Dino-nak konkrét elképzelései voltak a DH-val kapcsolatban. Tudta, hogyha összehoz egy új bandát, annak, súlyosnak, brutálisnak és ütősnek kell lennie. Pont ez történt a DH-val. A banda rohadt brutális. Zúzós ritmusok és észveszejtő sebesség! Hát így alakult a Divine Heresy-ként ismert szörnyeteg.
Majd beszállt hozzátok Tommy és több vendégzenésszel együtt felvettétek a Bleed The Fifth albumot. Meghozta számotokra azt a sikert, amit vártatok? Milyenek voltak a koncertek, mennyire őrültek meg a srácok?
Amikor Tommy bekerült a képbe a bandában már elég tag volt ahhoz, hogy haladhasson a lemezfelvétellel. Voltak nálunk nagyon tehetséges vendégzenészek, akik a Bleed the fifth c. számnál segédkeztek, ami nagyszerű és izgalmas élmény volt mindenkinek, aki azon volt, hogy elkészüljön az a felvétel. Nem sok dolgom volt, szerettem volna, ha én is kivehetem a részem, de azt hiszem a türelem rózsát terem:). Azt hiszem a zeneipart körülvevő letöltési őrület ellenére, a banda elégedett a Bleed the Fifth sikereivel. Sok albumot eladtunk már és nagyszerű turnékon voltunk! Láttam a bandát még Tommyval és mondhatom a banda nagyon erőteljes és csodálatos volt élőben, a rajongók pedig megőrültek a bandáért. Ezért is van ez a hatalmas őrület az új albummal kapcsolatban, az emberek izgatottan várják az új élő fellépéseket.
Kicsit később lényeges változások történtek a zenekar háza táján. Új énekesetek lett és beszállt Joe basszusgitározni. Miért volt ez a váltás?
Nos, amennyire én tudom, Joe akkor került a bandába, amikor elkezdődtek a turnék, úgyhogy már egy ideje benne van. Én a tavalyi év késő júliusában kerültem a bandába, miután Tommy-t kirúgták. A változásokat a Tommy és a banda közti nézeteltérések okozták. Egyszer Tommy letámadta Dino-t egy show után, ez volt a végleges ok, ami miatt mennie kellett. De már teljes, mohó és hódító gépezet vagyunk!! Úgyhogy álljatok készen!!
Az új albumot már 4 fővel vettétek fel és ismét Logan Mader producerrel dolgoztatok. Logannel ilyen jól kijöttök, ennyire érzi a zenéteket?
Logan Mader-rel és partnerével, Lucas Banker-rel (Dirty icon productions) dolgoztunk együtt újra, mivel nagyon értenek a munkájukhoz és elkötelezettek azok iránt, akiknek dolgoznak. Számomra hatalmas élmény volt velük dolgozni, mindketten rengeteget hoztak ki belőlem, még olyat is, amit nem is tudtam, hogy bennem van. Mindketten nagyon szeretik a bandát, nagyon büszkék arra, amit a Bleed the Fifth-ért és a Bringer of Plagues-ért tettek! Nagyon jól kijövünk. A Dirty Icon egy nagyszerű csapat és nagyon tudom ajánlani mindenkinek, aki a legjobb hangzást és albumot szeretné, ők a legjobbat hozzák ki mindenkiből.
Mennyire zajlott közös munka a dalok írásakor? Ugyebár 3 új ember is volt az előző albumhoz képest!
Megint, csak két tag írta a számokat ehhez az albumhoz; Joe és én. Alapjában véve, Dino, Tim és Joe szünet nélkül dolgoztak az új zenéken. Kompromisszumok nélküli, minőségi munkát végeztek. Miután megkaptam a nyers demot, a dalszöveggel és ének részekkel kezdtem. Megírni az új anyagot, egy kölcsönös munka eredménye, mindannyian kidolgoztuk a belünket is, hogy a lehető legjobb anyagot hozzuk össze, és az eredmény ezt mutatja is!
A mostani felállással maximálisan elégedett vagy? Mennyivel érzed tökéletesebbnek ezt az albumot, mint az elsőt?
100%-ig elégedettek vagyunk a jelenlegi felállással. Nem kívánhatnék jobb csapatot, mint a mostanit. A banda, a management, a képviselet és az ügynökség. A lehető legjobb csapat áll a banda mögött! Úgy érzem a Bleed the Fifth egy csodálatos album, de a mostani, úgy érzem, egy sokkal éretebb DH lemez. Az első lemez volt a próba, hogy a színre kerüljön a banda és magával ragadja az embereket. A Bringer of Plagues még mindig DH, de egy lépést tettünk az előző albumhoz képest, sokkal brutálisabb, dallamosabb és minden ami e kettő között van! Olyan albumra elkészítésére törekedtünk, ami még 20 év múlva is lezúzza az embereket, úgy érezzük ez sikerült is!
A gitárok terén elég könnyen ráismerhetünk a Fear Factory stílusára, de ez nem is csoda. Ettől függetlenül sok mindenben eltér a zenétek. Hogyan írnád körül a zenéteket?
Igen, amikor Dino gitárhangzását és stílusát meghallod, akkor FF-t hallasz. Úgy értem, a srác felfedezett egy hangzást, ezért tart ott ahol most, azért van ilyen karrierje! DH természetesen zenei stílusában, különbözik a FF-tól, a hangzás nagyjából megegyezik, de sokkal intenzívebb és brutálisabb! Világot uraló járványként írnám le a zenénket! Mikor kitaláltuk a „Bringer of Plagues” album címet, az akkor jelentéssel bírt számunkra. Nem bibliai vagy világvége értelemben, sokkal inkább sajátos értelemben, a banda még mindig DH, de már egy újabb verzió. Új tagok és zene, a zene, számunkra, olyan, mint egy járvány, amit most rázúdítunk erre a világra! Egy járvány, ami bekebelez, és egyre többet akarsz belőle. A világuralom a célunk és a „Divine Heresy”-ként ismert járvány, nem tartható vissza, míg be nem kebelezett mindent, ami az útjába áll, míg meg nem fordul a világ és minden, ami e földet benépesíti, porrá nem lesz!
A szövegek a társadalomról és a gyűlöletről szólnak. Mennyire utálod az embereket, szerinted miért alakul ki az emberek iránti gyűlölet?
:). Ez az album inkább egy koncepciós album, ami a világkatasztrófát, világvégét érinti és felkészít a „Divine Heresy”-ként ismert járvány eljövetelére. Nem sok utálkozó dalszöveg van az albumon, azt hiszem, csak egy átokszót mondok az egész albumon. Nem vagyok utálkozós ember; tisztelek mindenkit a világon, akivel találkozok. Véleményem szerint borzasztó szomorú, hogy milyenné vált a társadalom. Az utálat és tudatlanság, ami manapság van. Az emberek faji és hitbéli hovatartozás miatt gyűlölik egymást. Az egész közép-keleti konfliktus, és ahogy a csoportok gyűlölik azokat, akik nem osztoznak a vallásukban, vagy az ex-elnök (ifj. George Bush), aki egy kibaszott háborús bujtogató idióta volt, ő miatta utálják Amerikát. Első kézből tapasztaltam meg az amerikát érintő gyűlöletet, mikor tavaly januárban, a másik bandámmal („The Bereaved”), Svédországban dolgoztunk. Bementem egy pizzériába, hogy átvegyem az általam és a dobos, Tobhias által leadott rendelésünket. Amikor a csávó elkérte a pénzt, azt kérdeztem „Mennyi? Oké haver, tessék” Mosollyal az arcán kérdezte, hogy angol vagyok-e? Vagy Angliából jövök-e? Elmondtam, hogy amerikai vagyok és amerikából látogattam ide. Azonnal félrenézett és azt mondta „Oh!” A srác azután egyszer sem teremtett velem szemkontaktust; a visszajárót még csak a kezembe sem adta. Ledobta a pultra és hátrament, amíg el nem mentem. Igazán?!, Mi a bánatot tettem én ez ellen a fickó ellen? Tobhias is teljesen meglepődött és azt mondta, hogy még sosem látta így viselkedni ezt a fickót. Mondanom sem kell, hogy soha többet nem rendeltem onnan újra, nehogy valami patkánymérget rakjanak a kajámba. Nem mondom, hogy minden ember abból a részből ilyen, de nagyon szomorú dolog volt az számomra, hogy olyan döntések miatt, amiket a hazám kormánya hozott, engem is megutált a srác! Nagyon remélem, hogy egyszer sikerül felülkerekednünk ezeken a szarságokon és továbbléphetünk. Tudom, hogy sosem lesz világbéke, de talán egyszer sikerül kivívni a mások iránti tiszteletet…
Milyen országokban fogtok turnézni és kivel? Van valami régi vágyad, egy hely ahová még nem sikerült eljutnod, de nagyon szeretnél koncertezni?
A másik amerikai bandámmal, a Hatetimesnine-nal játszunk néhány államban, aztán a DH-val turnézunk, a svéd bandámmal, a The Bereaved-del, személyes elfoglaltságok miatt, jelenleg nem tervezünk turnét. A Divine Heresy szeptemberben kezdi az amerikai turnét, tervbe van véve európai turné is, de ez még nincs megszervezve. Mikor kész lesz a program, biztos vagyok benne, hogy mindenki értesül majd róla. Imádom Európát és már alig várom, hogy ott turnézzunk! Voltam már Németországban, Hollandiában, Dániában és Svédországban. Szeretnék elmenni Olaszországba, Rómába és Egyiptomba, tudom, hogy az nem Európában van, de szeretném látni Japánt, NAGY rajongója vagyok a japán tuning autóknak és drifteknek. Letörne, ha egy csomó pénzt költenék autókra, amiket nem hoznak be Amerikába és vissza kellene küldenem őket, hahaha:). Szeretném megnézni a hatalmas kultúrák és városok romjait, erről már gyerekkorom óta álmodozok, és remélhetőleg, egy nap, majd lehetőségem lesz erre és átélhetem ezeket a nagyszerű dolgokat.

You formed in 2005 with such well-known musicians like Dino (Fear Factory), Tim Yeung (Hate Eternal). How did you find each other? What was the musical direction back then?
This is Travis from Divine Heresy.
Well, I was not involved in the band at its birth in 2005. I joined in late July of last year but I do a bit of the history of the band because I asked the same question to Dino when I was getting in the band. Dino had been throwing ideas around with other drummers when the band was at its beginning stages. Dino met Tim backstage at a show and exchanged numbers and they talked a few times and got together and started jamming out together and I guess the rest is historyJ. I know that Dino was very particular about what he wanted to do with DH. At the time he was writing music for Roadrunner and it was more of a melodic metal vibe, like the song from the Roadrunner united stuff „The end”. He knew that if he put together a new band that it had to be heavy, brutal and totally make people say „Holy fuck!” That is exactly what he did with DH. The band came out brutal as shit! With crushing rhythms and mind blowing speed! So was the birth of the monster known as Divine Heresy!
Then Tommy joined the band, and with several guest musicians you recorded Bleed The Fifth. Did it bring the success to you expected? What were the gigs like, how much were the guys went nuts?
When Tommy came into the picture the band had the necessary members to move forward with making the record. The band did have some very talented guest musicians in the making of Bleed the fifth, and it was a very fun and exciting experience for all that were involved in the making of that record I’m sure.. Just a bummer for me because I wish I would have been involved as well, but I guess good things come to those who waitJ. I think despite the download craze that has taken over the music industry, the band was happy with the success of Bleed the fifth. The band sold a great amount of records, and was on some amazing tours! I saw the band when Tommy was still involved and I must say as a whole the band was very intense and amazing live and the crowds definitely went nuts for the band. That is why we still have the immense hype on this new record and people are real excited to see the band live again..
A bit later significant changes happened in the band. You had a new vocalist, and Joe joined on bass. Why did this change happen?
Well Joe was involved with the band as soon as they begun touring as far as I know, so he has been involved for quite a while. I came into the band around late July of last year after Tommy was fired. The changes happened with Tommy because of differences that had grown between him and the rest of the band. There was an issue where Tommy assaulted Dino after a show and that was the final decision in his departure from the band. But we are a complete, devour and conquering machine now!! So be ready!!!!!
The new album was recorded by already four people, and you again worked with producer Logan Mader. Do you get along so well with him, and he feels your music that much?
There are only four of us in DH. We worked with Logan Mader and his partner Lucas Banker (Dirty icon productions) again with this record because of the incredible workmanship and dedication to what they are working with. It was an incredible experience for me to work with them, they both brought a lot out of me that I never thought I had in me. They both were very into the band and still are, they are very proud of the work they did on Bleed the fifth as well as Bringer of plagues! We all got along very well. Dirty Icon is a great production team and I highly recommend anybody that wants a top notch sound and production and the best brought out of what they do to work with them!
How much was the composing of the tracks mutual work? There were three new members actually compared to the previous record.
Once again, there were only two new members in the writing process on this new record; I and Joe were very involved in the writing. Basically Dino, Tim and Joe worked tirelessly on writing the new music together. Cutting no corners on the quality of the music that they put together. I started the lyric and vocal arrangement process when I got the rough demos of the new tracks. So yes it was a mutual thing writing the new material, we all busted our asses to make the best record we could make and it really show’s!
Are you fully satisfied with the current line-up? How much do you feel this album to be more perfect than the first one?
I’m 100% satisfied with the current lineup. I could not ask to be involved with a better team than the team we all have together. The band, management, legal representation and booking agent. We have a top notch work force behind this band! I feel that Bleed the fifth was and still is an amazing record, but this new record I feel is a more mature DH. The first record was the pilot for the band, to get the band out there and to get people hooked and drawn in. Bringer of plagues is still DH but a step up from the last record, more brutal, more melodic and everything in between is boundless! We set out to write a record that will be something that will still blow people’s minds 20 years from now and we feel we did just that!
Guitar-wise, we can easily identify the style of Fear Factory but it’s in a way natural. In spite of that, your music differs a lot from that. How would you describe your music?
Well, yes when you hear Dino’s guitar tone and style you hear FF. I mean the guy pioneered a sound and that is why he is where he is at in his career! DH differs from FF of course because of the style of music, the tone and style is the same in a way but way more intense and brutal! I would describe our music as global dominating plague! When we came up with the title of the new record „Bringer of plagues”, it had a curtain meaning to us. Not in a biblical or end of the world sense but more of a sense that to us, our band is still DH but a new version of DH. New members and music, our music to us is looked at like a plague that we are unleashing upon this world! A plague that will devour you and keep you wanting more. World domination is our goal and the plague known as „Divine Heresy” will not stop devouring everything in its path until the world stops turning and everything that inhabits the surface is turned to dust!
The lyrics are about society and hate. How much do you hate people, and in your opinion why was the hate towards mankind formed?
J. This record is more of a concept record that dabbles into subjects of global disaster, worlds coming to their ends and preparing you for the oncoming plagues known as „Divine Heresy”. Not so much hate lyrics in this record, I believe I only say one curse word in the entire record. I’m not a real hating person; I have respect for every one of all parts of the world that I meet. In my opinion, it is extremely sad what society has become. The hate and ignorance that is out there these days. People hating each other because of race or religion. The whole Middle Eastern conflicts and how some of those groups hate everybody that is not part of their beliefs or hate Americans just because our ex president (Gorge Bush Jr.) was a fucking war mongering idiot! I have experienced that hate towards America from people like that first hand when I was in Sweden working with my other band „The Bereaved” in January of last year. I walked into a pizza place to pick up a pizza that I and my drummer Tobhias had ordered. When the guy asked for my money to pay for it I said „How much? Cool man, here ya go” He asked me with a smile on his face if I was English? Or was I from England? I told him that I was American and was visiting from the US. He looked away from me immediately and said „OH!” The guy would not even make eye contact with me again at all; he turned his head away from me to give me my change and would not even put into my hand. He dropped it onto the counter in front of me and walked away to the back area of the store until I walked out. Really!?, Like what the hell did I do to this guy? Tobhias was shocked as well, and said he had never seen that guy act like that before. Needless to say, I never ordered food from there again for the fear of Dcon being put in my food. I’m not saying that all people from that area of the world are like that, but it was a very sad thing to me that because of a decision that was made by a government of my home country that had nothing to do with me made this guy hate me so much! I really hope that one day we can move past all this pointless bullshit and get along. I know there will never be world peace but at least a better respect for one another can be gained one day…
Which countries will you be touring and with which bands? Any old wish, a place you would like to visit but haven’t had the chance so far?
As for my other bands, my other US band Hatetimesnine will be playing some stateside show’s until DH goes on tour and my Swedish band The Bereaved will not be doing any touring at this time because of personal schedules. Divine Heresy will be setting out on tour at the end of September in the US and we do have plans to tour Europe but nothing is set in stone as of yet. I’m sure when the schedules come in and everything is set you all will know. I love Europe and I cannot wait to tour there! As for the places I have been there.. I have been to Germany, Holland, Denmark and Sweden. I would love to see Italy, Rome and Egypt and I know it is not Europe but I would love to go to Japan, I’m a HUGE fan of the Japanese tuner cars and drifting. I would definitely be a broke guy if I went there because I would end up spending a bunch of money on cars that they never brought to the US and have them shipped back,hahahaha J. As for the other places I mentioned, seeing the ruins of some of the most powerful cultures and cities of the past is something I have dreamed about since I was a child and hopefully one day I will get the chance to see and take in all of those incredible things!
