Hell! A ’90-es években, amikor debütáltatok, szerintem sok mindenkit sokkoltatok a zenétekkel és a brutális vokállal. A megalakuláskor mi volt a zenei elképzelésetek?
Igen, a 90-es évek elején alakultunk és rengeted gore banda volt ránk hatással, olyanok, mint a Carcass, Cannibal Corpse és a Broken Hope. Így, valami beteg nevet akartunk mi is, ami illik a zene stílusába. Valójában le akartuk sokkolni az embereket. Az a frankó dolog a névben, hogy nem csak sokkoló, de könnyen megjegyezhető is. Az akkori ambícióink csak arról szóltak, hogy jól érezzük magunkat. Nem terveztük, hogy nagy bandává váljunk. Inkább csak egy hobbi volt.
Eddig melyik albumot érzed a legsikeresebbnek és miért?
Nem igazán van kedvenc albumom. Kedvenc nótáim pl. a „Praise the lord”, az „Intentional manslaughter”, és a „Killing on adrenaline”. A legtöbb embernek úgy néz ki, hogy a „Killing on adrenaline” és a „Destroy the opposition” jön be a legjobban.
Elég sok tagcserétek volt. Milyen fontos feltételeknek kellett megfelelni, ahhoz hogy valaki Dying Fetus tag lehessen?
Az évek során történtek változások a felállásban, mely valamelyest tipikusnak mondható az olyan death metal bandáknál, melyek már hosszabb ideje léteznek. Hogy valaki Dying Fetus taggá váljon, elkötelezettnek és nagyszerű zenésznek kell lennie, valamint lehessen rá számítani a turnékon. A turnézás nehéz dolog, és nem minden ember képes kezelni.
Az előző tagunk, Mike Kimball kilépése óta háromtagú banda vagyunk, ami egész jól működik. Sean, a basszeros már 9 éve tag, így úgy tűnik, a dobosok azok, akiket nehéz megtartani. Jelenleg Trey Williams tölti be nálunk a dobos posztját, nagyon tehetséges és minden nagyon jól alakul.
Nagy örömmel vettem róla tudomást, hogy szeptemberben jön a következő nagylemezetek Descend Into Depravity címmel. Hol rögzítettétek az anyagot és mennyire akartatok ismét brutálisak lenni:)?
A dalokat a Baltimore, MD-ben vettük fel Steve Wright hangmérnökkel. Ennél a végeredménynél jobbat nem kívánhatnánk.
Hogy olyan brutálak-e, mint az előzőek?
A számok kibaszott brutálisak, mint ahogy az elvárható egy Dying Fetus albumtól. Mindannyian keményen dolgoztunk az albumon, alkalmaztunk új technikákat, mint a „double-stroke kick drum” technika és a technikás gitár betétek.
Hangzás tekintetében lényegesebben jobbnak mondható, mint a korai lemezek, viszont, nem vagyok benne biztos, hogy van annyira durva is! Te hogy látod ezt?
Személy szerint azt gondolom, súlyos mint az állat. Az ének, gitár és dob kibaszott brutálisak.
A borító most kicsit másabb stílusú, bár azért nem áll annyira távol a régi dolgoktól. Ki készítette és honnan jött az ötlet, hogy egy ilyen képet válasszatok lemezborítónak?
Ami a borítót illeti, egy jóval erőszakosabb irányba akartunk elmenni. Valami eltérőt az „Americana” témától.
A borítót Orion tervezte, a Relapse-nál. Elküldtük neki a dalszövegeket és a számcímeket, ő pedig legyártotta a borítót és a belső tartalmat. A belsőben levő kép (a fickó, aki készül lerepíteni a saját fejét) volt az eredeti, amit a borítóra szántunk, de ezzel valószínűleg kitiltattuk volna a legtöbb árusító polcról. Így aztán egy kissé visszafogottabb, de utalásokkal teli borító mellett döntöttünk.
Mostanában elég sokat fogtok koncertezni, sőt jelenleg is turnéztok. Milyenek az eddigi visszajelzések az új dalokról? Minden albumról eljátsszátok a sikeresebb számokat vagy már inkább az újabb dalokat nyomatjátok?
Az elmúlt nyári turnékon a Hatebreed-del és az amerikai Summer Slaughter Tour-on eljátszottuk a „Your treachery will die with you” és a „Shepard’s Commandment”-et. A számok jó fogadtatást kaptak. Kiváltképp a „Treachery…”, úgy látszik ez lesz, ha úgy tetszik, a sláger, az albumon. Elég megfogó szám, nagyszerű folyamatossággal a riffek közt.
Ami pedig az élő listát illeti, különböző számokat játszunk, minden albumról.
Szerinted mennyire van jelentősége annak, hogy milyen bandákkal turnéztok együtt? Az amerikai vagy az európai koncertfellépésektől vársz többet?
Igen. Fontos, hogy olyan bandákkal játszunk együtt, akik illenek a zenei stílusba. A más stílusban mozgó bandákkal való együttműködés nem igazán volt sikeres. Néha az ének túl extrém és a zúzós ütemek nem jönnek be azoknak, akik nem szokták meg a brutális death metált, így a tömeg nem reagál ezekre.
Minden show-ra hasonló várakozással megyünk, brutális death metált mutatunk be. Legyen 100, vagy akár 1000 ember, megpróbáljuk a rajongók számára a legjobb teljesítményt nyújtani, ők pedig még sosem voltak csalódottak.
Nagyszerűen éreztük magunkat a magyarországi fellépésen, ami egy kikötött régi háborús hajón volt a folyón. Nagyon érdekes élmény volt ilyen régi hajón játszani. A show után egy 80-as évek hangulatát idéző tánc party volt a felső szinten, ami kibaszott vidám volt és eléggé zűrzavaros.
Gondolom elégedettek vagytok a Relapse kiadóval, mert már elég régóta náluk vagytok. Jól meg tudjátok velük beszélni a zenekarral kapcsolatos dolgokat? Mennyire diktálnak egy-egy adott kérdésben?
Az évek során jó kapcsolatot alakítottunk ki a Relapse Records-zal. A siker érdekében fontos, hogy csapatként dolgozzunk együtt a kiadóval. Mivel a kiadó felel a hirdetésért, marketingért és a banda promotálásáért, fontos, hogy jó kapcsolatban legyünk. A Relapse nem szab szigorú szabályokat, ami az egyik legjobb dolog ebben a kiadóban, a másik dolog, ami miatt ennél a kiadónál vagyunk már évek óta, az a szabadság, ami miatt azt csináltunk amit akarunk.

Hell. I think, in the ’90s when you debuted you made many people shocked with your music and brutal vocals. What were your musical ambitions at the time the band was formed?
Yeah we came out in the early 90s of course we were inspired by many of the gore bands at the time such as carcass, cannibal corpse, and broken hope. Therefore, we wanted a sick name to fit in the style of music that we enjoyed playing. We certainly wanted to shock people. The cool thing about the name is that it is not only shocking, but also memorable. Our ambitions at the time were to have fun and have a good time with it. We were not planning to be a big band. It was more of a hobby.
What do you think, which is your best album till now and why?
I don’t have one album in particular that is my favorite. Some of my favorite songs are „praise the lord”,” intentional manslaughter”, and „killing on adrenaline”. Most people seem to like „killing on adrenaline” and „destroy the opposition” best.
There were many changes among the members. What conditions does one have to meet to be a member of Dying Fetus?
Through the years there have been line-up changes within Dying Fetus, which is somewhat typical of death metal bands that have been around for a long period of time. In order for someone to become a member of dying fetus, they need to be dedicated to the band, an amazing musician, and road-worthy. Touring is difficult and not all people can handle it.
Our last member Mike Kimball left the band and since then, we have been a three piece, which has been working out pretty well. Sean our bass player has been in the band for the last 9 years, so it seems to be the drummers that are the most difficult to keep. Right now, we have a talented drummer Trey Williams, and everything is working out tremendously.
I was pleased hearing that your next album ‘Descend Into Depravity’ is coming up in September. Where have you recorded the songs?
The songs were recorded at Right Way studios in Baltimore, MD with engineer Steve Wright. We could not be happier with the final product.
Are they as brutal as the previous items?
The songs are brutal as fuck, as to be expected on a dying fetus album. We all worked very hard to create this album by incorporating new techniques such as the double-stroke kick drum technique and involving technical guitar patterns and what not.
As for the sound, it is much better than the first albums; however, I think it is a bit less hard. What do you think?
Yeah the production quality of this album is far beyond any other fetus release. Personally, I think it is heavy as shit. The vocals, guitar, and drums are brutal as fuck.
The cover art is a bit different too, but there some common things with the older albums’. Who has created it and who brought the idea of the picture?
We wanted to go in a more violent direction with the cover art on this album. We wanted to stray away from the „Americana” theme.
The cover was designed by Orion at Relapse. We sent him the lyrics and song titles and he produced the layout and cover of the album. However, the picture on the inside (the guy getting his head blown off) was what we originally wanted for the cover, but by doing so, it would have been banned from most corporate record stores. Therefore, we decided to go with a more suggestive violent cover.
You’re having many gigs these days and you’re on tour now. What are the feedbacks like about the new songs? Do you often play favorite songs from the older albums too, or only the newer pieces?
During this past summer’s tours with Hatebreed and the U.S. Summer Slaughter Tour, we performed the titles „your treachery will die with you” and „Shepard’s Commandment”. The songs were well received by the fans. Especially with the song „treachery”, that seems to be the hit, if you will, on the new album. It is a catchy fucking song with great continuity between the riffs.
For our live sets, we play a variety of tracks from each album in order capture Dying Fetus throughout the years.
Do you think it is important which bands you play with? From which do you expect more: American or European concerts?
Yes. it is important to play with bands that fit within the same genre of music. It seems as though playing with bands in other genres of music does not work out as well. Sometimes, the vocals are a bit too extreme and the blast beats go over many of the listeners’ heads when they have not been exposed to brutal death metal; Therefore, the crowd in unresponsive.
We go into each show with the same expectations of all our fans, which is to represent brutal death metal. Whether it is 100 or 1000 people, we try to give our best performance for the fans and our fans never seem to disappoint.
We had a great time at our last Hungarian performance, which was on an old war ship that was docked in the river. It was definitely an interesting experience, playing on such an old ship. After the show, there was an 80’s dance party on the top of deck, which was fucking hilarious and very random.
You must be satisfied with Relapse Label as you are in connection with them for many years. Can you usually understand each other’s expectations? Does the label have strict rules that you have to follow?
Over the years, we have built up a good rapport with relapse records. It is vital to work as a team with the label in order to succeed. Since the label is responsible for advertising, marketing, and promoting the band, it is important to stay on good terms. Relapse does not give us strict rules to follow in any way, which is one of the best things about the label and another reason that we have stayed with them throughout the years. They give us the freedom to do whatever the fuck we want to do.
