Exhumed Interjú

A kérdésekre Matt Harvey válaszolt.

Milyenek voltak a koncertek, mennyire sújtottátok a koncertre látogatókat?

Kezdett sejleni, hogy valamiféle behatással vagyunk a Bay Area-i kis buborékunkon túlra is.

Hogyan foglalnád össze, amit kapunk ettől a lemeztől?

Mennyire érezték a beteg témákat?

Mennyire értékeled jónak a magyar közönséget :)?

Legjobb élet a világon!

Answered by Matt Harvey.

The name Exhumed probably rings a bell to all, who like the death/grind genre. Regardless, we should start with a bit of reminiscence. The band was formed when this style was the most popular. What sort of influences did you have back then, that made you do something “crazy” like this, to make a really kickass band?

We were all really young, 15 or 16 years old and crazy about stuff like Repulsion, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Terrorizer, Impetigo, the early Pestilence stuff, early Death and early Florida Death Metal in general, as well as stuff like Filthy Christians, OLD, Extreme Noise Terror, and stuff like that. Then we got into the US Underground stuff that was emerging like the first Goreaphobia EP and things like that. Being from the Bay Area, Thrash Metal was still really big and we felt like we were rebelling against the safe and commercial sounds of bands like Testament and Exodus at the time, who were lapsing into being pretty friendly-sounding by the early 90s.

You have released several demos and splits at the beginning, and it took a long time to release your first album “Gore Metal”. Why?

Well, for starters we weren’t very good for quite some time, like most teenage bands tend to be, so it took a while to kind of find “our” sound. That happened around 1994/95 and by then “respectable” underground metal labels weren’t interested in our sound at all. Death Metal was kind of dying out, Black Metal was the hot new trend at the time. So we just ended up playing more shows with powerviolence / grind type bands, and ended up doing a lot of splits through that scene. I grew up collecting comic books, so I like the idea of a collectible disography full of limited, weird, rare shit. It’s very cool and we’ve kind of come at being a “proper metal band” sideways, which is unique and something I’m proud of.

How popular were you by that time among the death metal fans? What were the concerts like, how much did you crush those who came?

The split disc we did with Hemdale that came out in ’96 really established the band with the Death Metal underground and we started to realize that we actually had fans. In California we weren’t very popular, in fact we were more popular amongst the bands in our local scene than we were with the fans, but it was finally starting to grow the right way by then. We went to Europe in December 1997 and that was very eye-opening. We started to realize that we were having some kind of impact outside of our little bubble in the Bay Area. We had gone to the Milwaukee Metalfest in ’97 as well and started making friends with a few people at labels and stuff which was kind of weird. There was definitely the feeling that what we were doing was building towards something around that time.

Over the years, more of your releases have seen the light of day, and you have had your fair share of line-up changes. Was it difficult to weather the storm, and find new members to continue with?

Well, the line-up we have now came together very naturally. In the past, that wasn’t always the case- we looked for 2 years without success for someone to replace our original drummer, Col Jones back in ’04, so that really killed things at the time. But with the current line-up, we knew when we were doing All Guts… that Leon and Danny wouldn’t be part of any long-haul touring, and once we decided to embark on that road, we brought Mike and Rob on board and they have both worked out great. I think the rhythm section is a lot more apparent on this new record than anything we’ve done and I’m really stoked about that. With Wes leaving the band, it was a case of just him being unhappy with the tour schedules and circumstances and it negatively affecting his health and it just created a shitty dynamic as far as all of us getting along, working together, being in the van together, etc. etc. So it was definitely the right thing for us to part ways. Bud (Burke, guitar) had been in the band for years before as our bassist, so him coming back on guitar was a little bit of a renaissance in and of itself. We didn’t try anyone out or look for a guitar player, I just sort of wore him down until he agreed to get in the van.

Now let’s talk about the present, because soon you are going to release your latest album through Relapse. Nine brutal songs, ripping you up. How would you summarize it, what can we expect from it?

I think it’s our heaviest, most song-oriented record so far. It’s very much an Exhumed record, but it’s got a bit more groove and dynamics than our past stuff. I’m super proud of it and I think it’s our best shit yet. Hopefully people dig it, because we really believe in it.

As far as I know, you have recorded the drums at another studio. What is the reason behind this?

John Haddad, who owns Trench studios, where we recorded the drums for Necrocracy and All Guts, No Glory used to play drums for Phobia back in the early nineties, so he comes from the same scene as we do and understands our style really easily. In fact, he suggested a really cool beat change in “Carrion Call” that we ended up using. I like the idea of recording drums with a drummer, as he’s going to have a clearer picture of what will sound good, helping foster a groove, and just knowing how to dial in great drum sounds. John really helps us with that, and then we take it to Butler in Arizona at Arcane, who’s a guitar player to do all the guitars and shit.

What was it like, working with producer Ryan Buttler and John Haddad? How well did they blend with your sick themes?

They both know us really well, and know the band’s sound really well, so it makes for a very stress-free work enviornment. I mean, a little bit of pressure is good, just to light a fire under your ass, but I don’t like the feeling of being really rushed, like we were on the early records. Especially since we didn’t get a lot of time in the rehearsal room, due to being on tour all the time, it was nice to have a bit more time in the studio and flesh things out completely. Butler has a great ear for guitar tone and a killer amp arsenal – that helps things sound really huge.

What was your Hungarian concert like? How would you rate the Hungarian audience? J

Budapest was killer, not quite as good as last time when we were there with Rotten Sound, but the energy was fucking excellent as usual! We always look forward to playing in Hungary, especially because Budapest is such a gorgeous city – and  full of gorgeous women.

You are going to perform at several locations over the couple of weeks. I feel like you are going to put things straight, show people what death metal really is; sadly, there are several shitty additives in today’s music. What can you promise for the fans, what should they prepare for?

Man, I don’t really think about what we do in terms of “what death metal really is” or whatever anymore. I just try to be honest to myself when I write and respect what the band is all about. Exhumed didn’t go away even when the band broke up, it has a life of its own and I just try to go with the flow of that. I don’t really listen to much modern Death Metal at all, I’m still stuck in a time warp. That’s why I listen to a lot of music that’s not metal in the slightest – I keep my perspective on underground metal pretty pure and isolated. I can promise the fans that we give 100% onstage every night, and that we hit a little bit of everything from our discography, deliver a good fucking time with entertainment, a sense of humor and as many songs as they keep shouting for. Last night we did two encores, something like 22 songs, so if the energy is there, we are too.

I really respect your loyalty and tenacity, and you are also awesome at what you do. The best of luck for you!

Thanks man, all the guys and I appreciate that. We do work really fucking hard, playing 200 shows a year or so, and we live what we do. There’s no divide between band life and normal life, it’s just one and the same. We’re a full time rock band of (mostly) functioning alcoholics let loose upon the world with really loud amplifiers. Best way in the world to live! Cheers, and we look forward to seeing everone on the road for the new record!!
