A német Fear My Thoughts hamarosan megjelenteti legújabb, Isolation című lemezét, amely július 18-án fog kijönni, de a banda már most a figyelem középpontjában van, erősen megosztva a rajongókat. Ezzel a lemezzel debütál az új énekes, Martin Fischer, akivel az album körüli felhajtásról beszélgettem. Az új anyag főleg a hardcore és a metacore kedvelőinek lesz ínyére.
Pontosan mióta is vagy bandatag?
Tavaly április óta, akkor kezdtem el próbálni a bandával, új számokat írni, és volt pár koncertünk is azóta, és turnéztunk is főzenekarként.
Hogyan tudtál beépülni az együttesbe?
Hát már ismertem egypár éve a srácokat, tehát személyes problémák nem voltak, barátok voltunk. Amikor elkezdték az új anyagot írni, már ott voltam az elejétől. Csináltam a dolgomat.
Mondatjuk, hogy rajongója voltál a Fear My Thoughts-nak?
Igen, szóval tetszett amit csináltak, és a barátaim voltak. Élveztem a felvételeket, tetszett az eredmény is. Ez a banda csak egyre jobb lett lemezről lemezre, főleg mióta a Century Media-nál van. Elkísértem őket koncertekre mint háttérgitáros, és végül is így kerültem bele az új lemez készítésébe is. Azt nem tudnám megmondani, hogy mikor még nem ismertem őket, rajongó voltam-e, de tetszett a gitár és a dobjáték is, meg minden. Most már mondhatjuk, hogy rajongó vagyok.
Benne voltál az Isolation elkészítésében is?
Igen, részt vettem a szövegírásban, és gitároztam is, segítettem a szervezésben és a zeneírásban is. Én csináltam a vokál felvételeit, és feljátszottam valamennyi gitárt is.
Gondolom számodra ez a lemez egy teljesen új fejezet, de te hogy kapcsolnád a korábbi albumokhoz?
Nehéz megmondani… mivel ismertem a srácokat, tudtam mit akarnak kihozni belőlük, de ez a emez tényleg teljesen más lett. A cél szerintem az volt, hogy legyen teljesen más és új. Számomra egyértelműen fejlődést jelent, és teljesen érthető, de sokan nem így értik. Elég sok negatív kritika érte a MySpace-re feltöltött számokat. De szerintem ez egyszerűen csak a természetes útja a dolgoknak. Amikor elkezdődött a zeneírás még nem volt semmi új ötlet, egészen old-school metalt volt, csak később fejlődött valami egészen különlegessé.
Igen, én is észrevettem, mennyire megoszlanak a vélemények a MySpace-en. Hogyan reagáltok ezekre?
Ez együtt jár bármilyen fejlődéssel, tehát bármit is megváltoztatunk ahhoz képest, hogy milyen volt, valaki mindig lesz, aki azt mondja, hogy ez már többé nem a Fear My Thoughts. Sokan egyszerűen nem fogadják el a változást, bármit is csinálunk. Volt mindenféle kritika, néhány elég durva és goromba is, de mások pedig pozitívak voltak, olyanoktól is, akiknek van zenei hátterük. Elég sokra válaszoltunk is, megkértük őket, hogy tartsák tiszteletben, hogy ezt szeretnénk csinálni, valami teljesen mást. Volt egy tag, aki tényleg nagyon rossz véleménnyel volt rólunk, és hangoztatta is, végül Marcus visszaírt neki, és megkérte, hogy tartsa ezt tiszteletben. Bocsánatot is kért azonnal, amiért sértő volt, és elmondta, hogy nem tudja hallgatni a számokat, mert ez nem az ő világa, de megérti, hogy nekünk most erre kell elmennünk. De még mindig elég sokan nem fogják ezt fel. Nem tudjuk, hova vezet ez, de aki velünk marad, majd meglátja. Mi is eléggé izgulunk, hogy hova jutunk. De ha valaki death metalt akar hallgatni, akkor hallgassa azokat a bandákat, akik még mindig abban nyomják.
Mit fejez ki a borító és hogyan köthető az album címéhez?
A cím, Isolation a saját élményünkből fakad, mert így éreztük magunkat a felvételek során, tudod tulajdonképpen teljesen magunkban voltunk, távol a világtól, hónapokat töltöttünk a próbateremben és a stúdióban. Így biztosak lehettünk benne, hogy amit csináltunk az tényleg belőlünk jött, ebből az öt srácból itt a próbateremben. Ami a borítót illeti, elég sok tervünk volt, legalább nyolc, ez volt az utolsó, és végül a srácok ezt szerették volna. Kicsit hasonlít a Vulcanus borítójához, de ahogyan készült, és jobban megnézve az egészet, látszik, hogy a cím köré épült. Nem akartunk egy szokásos címet, inkább kifejezőt, ami rólunk szól. Nem akartuk, hogy negatív felhangja legyen, de természetesen sokféleképpen lehet értelmezni.
Habár nagyon ragaszkodtok a csináld magad elvhez, biztosan voltak akik segíttetek nektek, kik voltak ők, és hogyan dolgoztatok együtt?
Egyrészt a Century Media, a kiadó munkatársai segítettek, másrészt pedig a producer, Daniel Bergstrand. Nagyon jó volt vele együtt dolgozni, nagyon tapasztalt, talán ő volt az, aki legtöbbet segített. Az anyag nagy részét vele vettük fel, segített az éneknél is, itt volt Németországban a mikrofonok beállításánál is, szóval az egész produkciós folyamatot felügyelte. A leggondosabb szervezői munka volt, amit valaha láttam, sokkal természetesebb hangzásúak lettek a számok, nem pedig olyan plasztik-metal szerűek. Nem akarok megbántani senkit, de a legtöbb metal produkció ilyen és mi sokkal rockosabb, alternatív rockos hatást akartunk elérni. Minden mást viszont mi csináltunk. Kaptunk még egy kis segítséget itt-ott, például a bonus dalok esetén. Megkértünk néhány hip-hop zenészt, de ez volt az egyetlen dolog, a többi a mi munkánk.
Tudnál valamit mondani a bonus-okról?
Három dal lesz, amelyek a Japánban megjelenő albumon lesznek rajta, ezek feldolgozások, némileg elektronikusabb hangzással, de igazán nem tudok róluk sokat mondani. Nem tudom fogom-e még hallani őket, nem nagyon tudom mi lesz velük.
Korábban már említetted, hogy az új zenei tendencia már a Vulcanus óta jelen van, tervezitek, hogy még inkább elmentek ebbe az irányba?
Igen, habár mint mondtam, elsősorban még mindig metal banda vagyunk, és most sem tudtuk még az elején, hogy mi fog kisülni ebből, és mit is akartunk az albummal, de elég erős anyag lett belőle. Azt hiszem ez ennek a lemeznek az erőssége, a nagyon tiszta gitár és vokál, és a letisztult dallamok. Az egész nagyon tiszta lett.
Hogy érzed, milyen a fogadtatása ennek a metal-hardcore keveréknek?
Egyelőre csak a MySpace-en keresztül kaptunk visszajelzéseket, azok a rajongóink nézik az oldalunkat, akik már ismernek minket. Van, akinek tetszik, van akinek nem, és nem is fogja meghallgatni a lemezt. Nem tudnám százalékra megmondani. Még nincs elképzelésem sem, várnunk kell két-három hónapot, amikor majd lesz időnk összeülni és értékelni, hogy hogy alakulnak a dolgok. De most még nem tudni.
Van olyan album vagy szám, amelyik a személyes kedvenced?
A Vulcanus-nál ott voltam a próbákon, a felvételeken és a turnén is, szóval láttam hogy működnek a dolgok, szóval azt a lemezt nagyon szeretem, de, mint mondtam, a banda egye jobb lemezről lemezre, és most is a legutóbbi tetszik legjobban, különösen most, hogy én is benne vagyok:). Konkrétan számot nem tudnék mondani, vannak olyanok, amelyeket szeretek hallgatni, másokat meg élőben játszani.
Miket hallhatnak majd a rajongók a koncerteken? Mindenféle számot játszotok, vagy inkább újakat?
Nyilván inkább az új lemezről fogunk játszani, mivel ez jön ki most, de természetesen lesz két-három régebbi dal is. Később szerintem a koncert 40-50 %-ban a régebbi számok lesznek. Nagy változás nem lesz, mivel már jó egy éve vagyok én az énekes, és még mindig metalt játszunk.
Neked milyen a zenei háttered?
Őszintén szólva elég sok tapasztalatom van, mindenféle bandákban játszottam már, mint vendég gitáros, volt popposabb bandám mikor fiatalabb voltam, voltak saját együtteseim is de voltam már jazz, sőt punk bandában is, szóval a Fear My Thoughts az első metalbandám, habár ez inkább egy átmenet a metal és a hardcore között. Én inkább rock’n’roll beállítottságú vagyok.
Megkérdezhetem, hogy az előző gitáros, Andre miért lépett ki?
Amikor meghívtak az együttesbe tavaly, akkor háttérvokálos voltam, időnként gitároznom kellett, és szintin játszani. Egy idő után, amikor a banda elkezdte az új számokat elpróbálni, felmerültek újabb ötletek, és neki nem tetszettek, nem hangzottak jól szerinte. Meg voltak magánéleti dolgok is, ami miatt nem tudott odakoncentrálni. Andre sokat tanult, és nem akart annyit turnézni, ellenben e többiek többet szerettek volna, ezért úgy döntött, hogy kilép. Sajnálom, hogy elment, mert nagyon jó énekes volt, és szerettem vele fellépni. Amikor elment, nekem úgy kellett énekelnem, ahogy ő, nem volt könnyű, de ez van. Még mindig szintizek, de az éneklés a lényeg. Nagyon szeretem a srácokat, a családjukat is, és turnékon elég sok időt töltünk együtt. Most nagyon izgulunk, mi lesz. Ha lemez nem is megy olyan jól, mint a Vulcanus ment, a lényeg, hogy új dologba kezdtünk, és majd meglátjuk mi lesz belőle. Most teljesen szabadok vagyunk.
Tovább mentek majd ebben az irányban?
Nem tudom megmondani, milyen lesz a következő lemez, de most jól érzem magam. Tényleg fogalmam sincs, biztosan kemény zene lesz, nem elektronikus cucc. Lehet, hogy lassabb lesz, és valószínűleg tovább folytatjuk a kísérletezgetést.

Fear My Thoughts from Germany is now at the point of releasing their new full-length album, Isolation, due on July 18, but it is already in the centre of attention, dividing even the fans. This is the debut album of the new vocalist Martin Fischer, who talked about the upturn around the band, and also the debut of the new, metalcore sounding.
How long have you been a member of the band exactly?
I’m there since last year, April, that was when I started rehearsing with the band, writing new songs, and there were concerts on a tour where Fear My Thoughts was headlining.
How could you integrate into the band?
Well I’ve known the guys for a couple of years now, so personally there wa no problem, since they were my friends. When they started writing the new songs, I was always there from the beginning, I had to do my own things
Can we say that you were a fan of Fear My Thoughs?
Yeah, I mean I liked everything they were doing, and we were friends. I enjoyed the recordings and I liked the result as well. You know this band was getting better from record to record, since they work with Century Media. I accompanied them to the concerts as guitarist, and I ended up at the recording of the new album just like that. I can’t really say if I were a fan of the band when I didn’t know them personally, but actually I liked the guitar playing and drums and all that. Now I can say that I’m also a fan.
Did you take part in the production of the new album Isolation?
Yes, I take part in composing the lyrics, and I also play the guitar, so I did some help at the arrangements, and also in the songwriting. I did the actual vocal recording and I also recorded some guitar.
For you, this album is a whole new project, but how do you feel it is related to the former albums?
It’s hard for me to say… I knew the guys before, and I knew what they wanted to do with all these albums, but this one came out totally different. I think they just wanted to do something totally different and new. I think it’s also what they wanted to achieve with Vulcanus, it was also distinct form the earlier materials. To me it’s a development that I can clearly understand, but a lot of people don’t get the point. There were many negative opinions on the songs uploaded on MySpace. I think it’s the natural way that things had to go. When we started the songwriting they didn’t come up with any new ideas at all, there were just typical old-school metal songs, and then it developed into something unique.
Yes, I also noticed that there are several controversial opinions posted on your MySpace page. How do you answer to these reactions?
That goes together with any development to any direction, I mean if we change anything from the way it was, someone will always say that it’s not Fear My Thoughts any more. A lot of people just don’t understand accept this as a development, whatever you do. There were some critiques, some were really nasty and rude, and others were quite good, even from people with musical background, and we answered a lot of them, and asked them to respect that this is what we want to do, something different. There was someone who had a really bad opinion and repeated it all the time, and at last Marcus wrote back and asked him to respect that this is the way wee wanna go. Then he apologized for being so rude on the first place and said yeah, I can’t listen to it because it’s not the kind of music but I respect that you’re going this way. There’s still a lot of people who just don’t see that. We’re going this way now, and yeah, we don’t know where it’s gonna go, so just stay with us, and we’ll see. We’re also excited about what’s gonna happen. But if you want to listen to death metal music, go for the death metal bands that are still there, you now.
What does the title suggest and how it is related to the cover artwork?
The title Isolation comes from our experience, that’s the kind of way we felt during the recording, you know, we were in fact only by ourselves away from the rest of the world, we spent months in the rehearsing room and studios, not playing live, to be sure that what we were doing was totally form inside, from these five guys in the rehearsal room. There have been a lot of plans for the artwork, something like eight, this was the last, and the guys said they wanted this. It’s similar to the Vulcanus’s artwork a little bit, but I think the way it’s done and if you see the whole artwork, the whole cover is about the title. We didn’t want to have some typical title, bur expressing the feeling that we had. We didn’t want it to be negative, but of course you can interpret it in many ways.
You claim to insist always on do-it-yourself ethics, but you had some professionals who helped you. Who were they, and how could you cooperate with them?
There was the staff of the record label, Century Media, than the producer was Daniel Bergstrand. We really liked the way he worked, and he’s very experienced, he was probably the guy who helped us most. We recorded most of the stuff with him, he helped with the vocals too, and he was here in Germany for the setting of the microphones, so he took care of the whole production. In fact it was the most careful arrangement I’ve ever seen, and he gave the songs a more natural sounding, so that it didn’t have that plastic metal sounding. I don’t mean in a negative way but that’s what most metal productions are, and we wanted a more like rock, alternative rock sounding. The rest was totally done by ourselves. We had a little help here and there when we had to do the bonus tracks, we asked some guys, like hip-hop artists, but that was the only thing, the rest was our work.
Could you tell me something about the bonus tracks?
There’ll be three of them, they’re going to be on the Japan release, they’re cover versions with a bit more electronic sounding, but I don’t know too much of them, I don’t know if I’ll ever hear them again, I don’t really know what’s gonna happen with them.
You mentioned that there’s a new tendency present since the release of Vulcanus, are you planning to go further in this old-school like sounding?
Yes, though we still play typical metal on the first place, and at the beginning we didn’t know what the production would be like, and what we wanted to say with the record, but it come out to be a very powerful stuff. I guess that’s the big point of this record, that we have a very pure guitar sounding and also the vocals and the choruses are very clear. The whole thing is a very pure stuff.
What is the reception of this metal and hardcore mixture like?
We only have the feedbacks from MySpace so far, and it’s just the fans who watch our website and know us already. Some people like it, some people don’t, and some won’t listen to the whole record. I cannot tell what percentage like it. I have no idea yet, we just have to wait two or three more months, and we’ll see. Real results will be only later, especially after tour, and after that we’re gonna have time to come together and find out how it works actually.. But I have no idea right now.
Dou you have your personal favourite album or track?
In case of Vulcanus, I was present during the recording, rehearsing and also on the tour, so 5hat was the album when I learned what was behind the scene, so that one I like very much personally, but since – as I have mentioned – this bad is getting better from record to record, I like the last one the most, especially now, since I1m also on it. A concrete song I cannot tell, because there are songs that I like to listen to, and others that I like playing alive on concerts.
What can the fans expect from you on the next tour? Will you play miscellaneous tracks, or mostly from Isolation?
We’ll play more form the new album, of course, since right now that’s the album we’re releasing, but there’ll surely be two or three older hits as well. But later I think we’re gonna play 40 % or even 50% from the earlier albums. There won’t be a great change, since I am the singer now for a year, and we’re still playing metal.
What kind of musical background do you have?
I’ve played pretty much to be sincere, I’ve been playing in all kinds of bands, as I am a live guitarist for more professional bands, so there were some pop kind of stuff when I was younger, and I also started my own bands. I started playing the guitar very early, and singing also, I’ve been in all kinds of bands from jazz bands to.. I don’t know… funk bands, so actually fear My thoughts is the fist metal band I have, or to be more precise, it’s a crossover between hardcore and metal, but I’m more that rock’n’roll kind of guy actually.
Can I ask what were the reasons of the former vocalist, Andre’s leaving the band?
When I was called into the band, it was last year, I was supposed to sing as a background vocalist, play the guitar, if necessary, and keyboards. But after a while, when the band was rehearsing the new songs already, some new ideas came up and he said he didn’t like it, it didn’t sound good, and of course there were some private stuff going on, and he couldn’t concentrate on what he was doing. Andre was studying a lot, and he didn’t wanted to go on tour so much, but the others wanted tour a lot more, so he just decided to quit. I’m sorry he left because he was a great singer and I was pleased to tour with him. When he left I was supposed to sing the way he did, and it was a hard work, but now that’s the way it is. I still have the keyboard parts but mostly I’m singing. I love the guys, and their families, and we spend much time together on tour. Just right now we1re so excited about what’s gonna happen. But even if the record not gonna sell as well as Vulcanus, we know that we’ve done something new, and whatever we want to do we can so we have all the freedom, but we’ll see what’s gonna happen.
Are you planning to go on towards this direction?
I can’t tell what’s the next records gonna sound like, but now I feel pretty good. I really have no idea, we’ll play hard stuff, we’re not doing electric materials. Maybe we’re getting slower and slower, and probably we’ll experiment more on the next record.
