Üdvözöllek benneteket srácok! A Gallow God egy új név a doom színtéren. Mit kell tudnunk rólatok? Mikor és hogyan jött létre a zenekar?
Sziasztok, köszönjük az interjú lehetőséget.
A Gallow God 2004-ben alakult. Rick és én egy Celephais nevű doom projekten dolgoztunk, mellyel csak stúdiózni akartunk. Sajnos komoly technikai nehézségek adódtak és a cucc nagy része elveszett. Ez eléggé kikapta a szelet a vitorlánkból, meg hánytuk-vetettük és úgy döntöttünk, szétválnak útjaink.
Eltelt pár év, majd 2009-ben Rick ismét kapcsolatba lépett velem és elmondta, hogy vannak új cuccai a stúdióban és elkezdett foglalkozni a régi témákkal, és nem akarok-e lemenni, meghallgatni. Lementem és visszatért a lelkesedésem, így újra elkezdtük a projektet. Még mindig stúdió projektként gondolunk rá, mivel csak ketten játszunk az összes hangszeren és mi írjuk a számokat is.
Az EP befejezéséhez közel úgy döntöttünk, teljes bandává alakítjuk a projektet és meghívtuk Jim Panlilio-t, aki dobokon és Martin Singleton-t, aki basszuson játszik.
A nevünket 2010. elején Celephais-ről Gallow God-ra változtattuk, mivel kiderült, hogy már egy másik banda használja ezt a nevet.
Úgy tűnik, mindnyájatoknak a Gallow God az első zenekara, igaz?
Martin kivételével mindenki játszott már másik bandában, de a bandában mindenkinek a Gallow Gods az első bandája, akivel felvettek és ki is adtak valamit. 1996 óta voltam már több doom bandában is, Ricknek pedig számos zenei projektje volt a metálon kívül is, Jimmy pedig egy Kalayu nevű bandában énekel.
Közös zenei gyökerekkel rendelkeztek vagy mindenkinek megvannak a saját kedvencei?
Igen, a zenei gyökereink közösek és imádjuk a metált! Fiatal korunk óta hatással vannak ránk az olyan bandák, mint a Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow (Dio korszak) Iron Maiden, és Jimi Hendrix, doom metál bandaként, pedig olyan bandák hatottak ránk, mint a Sabbath, Candlemass, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Isole, Reverend Bizarre, Solstice, Solitude Aeturnus, Warning és a korai Cathedral, Anathema és My Dying Bride. Ezeken kívül rettentően szeretjük még az Opeth-et is.
Tavaly egy klasszikus doom hatásokat magán hordozó Ep-vel jelentkeztetek, a False Mystical Prose-zal, azonban arra lennék kíváncsi, hogy ezt megelőzően rögzítettek-e demókat? Netán az Ep-t szántátok bemutatkozás gyanánt és nem vettetek fel demókat?
Köszönjük a dicséretet. A felvétel előtt beszélgettünk kicsit, és arra jutottunk, ha csinálni akarjuk, akkor csináljuk minden erőnkből. Az egyetlen demo-t csak magunknak vettük fel, hogy meghallgassuk, hogyan szól az anyag. Az EP-t azért adtuk ki, hogy felmérjük az igényt a zenénkre, még mielőtt kiadnánk egy teljes albumot, valamint, hogy tanulmányozhassuk a keverést, hangszerelést, amit 4 számmal egyszerűbb volt megoldani, mint 8-9 számmal.
A másik ok, amiért EP-t adtunk ki, hogy mindent önerőből finanszírozunk, a stúdiózástól kezdve, a masterelésen és a weboldalon át egészen a CD legyártásig. Ez az összeg 4 számmal sokkal olcsóbb, a False Mystical Prose-ból befolyó összeget pedig az új album finanszírozásába fektetjük.
Hogyan állnak össze a Gallow God dalai? Mi a munkamódszeretek?
Általánosságban Rick vagy én találunk ki valami riffet vagy két-három fő témát, amit otthon felveszünk. Aztán elküldjük egymásnak és kitaláljuk, mi legyen.
A következő lépés, hogy összeülünk és felépítjük a számot, majd felvesszük a többi gitár részt, riffet, összepróbáljuk, hogy meghallgassuk, hogy szól együtt. Aztán feljátszok egy alap dobtémát, végül pedig felvesszük a basszust is.
Ha minden a helyén, minden tag kap egy demot. Ez alatt én megírom a dalszöveget és az énektémát, végül pedig a próbateremben finomítunk rajta.
Hol és mikor zajlottak a felvételek? Hogyan jellemeznéd a stúdiós munkálatokat?
A dobot kivéve mindent Rick stúdiójában vettünk fel, a dobot pedig nálam, ahol van egy szoba, kifejezetten dob rögzítésére.
A stúdiózás folyamata a demotól kezdődik. Ha elégedettek vagyunk a számok felépítésével, kivágjuk a nyers dobtémát és lementjük MP3-ban. Ezt új projektként importáljuk, majd erre kerül rá a dob. Mikor ez kész, letöröljük az mp3-at és feljátsszuk a többi hangszert is.
Mikor mindent felvettünk, készítünk egy nyers keverést és jön az ének. Itt is, először egy nyers demot csinálunk, ha minden rendben, felvesszük rendes minőségben. Ezután már csak a keverés van hátra és elküldjük a számot masterelésre.
Kérlek mutasd be olvasóinknak az Ep-t saját szavaiddal! Melyek a legfontosabb tudnivalók az anyagról?
A False Mystical Prose 15 percnyi zenét és négy számot tartalmaz. Nincs igazán alapvető koncepció, minden szám egyénileg más nézőpontot képvisel, megmutatja, merre tartunk a Gallow God-dal. Tiszta és erőteljes lemezre lehet számítani, érzelmes gitár témákkal és komor énekkel.
Az EP felvétele alatt elég tragikus epizódja folyt épp az életünknek és ez biztosan hatással volt a zenére is. Mikor meghallgattam Rick gitártémáját a „The Sin And Doom of Godless men”-ben, tudtam, milyen borzalmas helyről jön és ez valószínű a hallgatónak is lejön majd. Az EP-n nincs hamis érzelem, és még rengeteg mondanivalónk van.
Nagy Britannia rengeteg kitűnő doom bandát adott a világnak pl. régi Anathema, My Dying Bride, Warning, Cathedral, Electric Wizard stb. ezt mivel magyarázzátok? Komoly szerepet játszott Nagy Britannia a doom színtéren, a doom színtér kialakításában?
Nos, igen, az én felfogásom szerint a Black Sabbath kezdte az egészet, de nem mondanám, hogy jól mentek a dolgok a ’90-es évekig, amikor is megalakult a My Dying Bride, Cathedral, Anathema és a Solstice. Valami lehet itt Angliában, ami kelteti ezeket a nyomorúságos zenéket, még a mainstream bandák, mint a Coldplay vagy a Radiohead is ilyen szomorú zenéket játszanak. Lehet, hogy az időjárás teszi!
Azért nem mondanám, hogy a többi országban nincs hatásos Doom zenekar. A ’70-es években ott volt a Saint Vitus, Trouble és Pentagram az Államokból, a korai ’80-as években a svéd Candlemass, a ’90-es években pedig a Solitude Aeturnus ismét az Államokból. Nagyon sok jó banda van, melyek otthagyták bélyegüket a doom metal zenén, és a fenti példák még csak a nagyon ismert bandákat érintik.
A Doom Metálra jelenleg műfajként tekintek, amely nagyon egészséges, minőségi zenéből táplálkozik a világ minden tájáról, főként olyan helyekről, melyekre nem is gondolnál! Figyeljétek az angol színteret, nagyszerű bandák vannak.
Jövőbeni terveitekről mit kell tudnunk? Mikor tervezitek megjelentetni bemutatkozó albumotokat?
Jelenleg az albumon dolgozunk, talán rajta lesz a 4 demó szám is, Jim a következő héten dobolja fel a számokat. Az album október vége felé jön ki.
A False Mystical Prose-ból tervezünk kiadni egy bakelit verziót is a PsycheDOOMelic recordson és Olaszországban a Terror From Hell Records-on keresztül, valamint lesz még póló és néhány helyi buli is a nyáron, hogy szokjuk az élő közeget és még millió más dolog is vár ránk!

Hey there guys! Gallow God is a new name in the doom scene. Please tell us a few things about yourselves. When and how were you formed?
Hi Guys, Thanks for contacting us for the Interview we appreciate the interest.
The Origin of Gallow God goes back a few years to 2004. Rick and I had started working together on a Doom Metal project using the name Celephais, with the intention of it being nothing more than a studio project that we would release if the music and recording turned out any good. Unfortunately we had some massive technical difficulties during this period and lost a lot of the stuff we had been working on at the time; as you can imagine this was very frustrating and kind of took the wind out of our sails a bit, so we chalked it down to experience and went our separate ways.
a couple of years passed and in the summer of 2009 Rick once again got in touch with me and explained that he had made a few improvements to the studio and had started messing around with some of our old stuff, did I want to come down and have a listen to it? I went along, and the enthusiasm returned so we decided to start the project again. We still considered this a studio project as there were only two of us to play all of the instruments and write the material.
Towards the end of recording the EP we decided to expand the project into a full band, and brought in Jim Panlilio on Drums and Martin Singleton on Bass.
The name change from Celephais to Gallow God was made in early 2010, as after a bit of research we found that there was already a band using the Celephais name.
Gallow God is the first band of all of you, isn’t it?
With exception of Martin, we have all played in other bands in the past, but Gallow God is the first band for all of us in which we have recorded and released anything. I’ve been in various Doom bands since 1996, Rick has done numerous musical projects outside of Metal, and Jimmy is the vocalist in a band called Kalayu.
You have common musical roots or you like different kinds of music?
Yes we all have common musical roots, and we are all metal heads! Bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow (Dio Era) Iron Maiden, and Jimi Hendrix are influences we all share from our teenage years, and we are all pretty much on the same page when it comes to the bands that have influenced us in Doom Metal, Sabbath, Candlemass, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Isole, Reverend Bizarre, Solstice, Solitude Aeturnus, Warning as well as early Cathedral, Anathema and My Dying Bride. Outside of that we each have our own personal influences as well but Opeth deserve a special mention as another band we are all into.
Last year you came out with a classic doom EP, False Mystical Prose. Have you recorded demos before this or you wanted to debut with this EP and you haven’t recorded demos?
Thanks for the Compliment. When we decided to start recording we had a conversation and basically it boiled down to, if we are going to do this let’s do it the best we can, so the only demo’s we recorded were for ourselves to see how the tracks sounded. We wanted to come straight out with a proper release. the idea of doing an EP rather than an Album was that we would be able to at least start gauging the reaction to our music and go through the process of learning how best to record our instruments and mix the tracks, and with 4 songs to work on rather than 8 or 9 we could concentrate on all the aspects we needed to get to grips with.
Another reason for going down the EP route was that everything was self financed, right from setting up the studio to paying for mastering, setting up our website and ordering the first press of the CD. With 4 songs the costs were more manageable, and now we can now use any money we make from False Mystical Prose to finance the new Album.
How do you write songs? What’s the method?
The most common way that we write songs would be that either Rick or I will come up with a riff or two or even the majority of a song and record them at home. We then send each other the recorded tracks over the internet so we can have a listen and see what we think of it.
The next step is that we would get together and start structuring the songs and recording additional guitar parts and writing additional riffs and jamming the track to see how well it works. I would then record some basic drum parts for reference. The last thing we do is to record the bass tracks.
Once all this is in place everyone in the band gets copies of the demo. And it’s at this point that I would start trying out vocal patterns and writing lyrics. Finally we will add the song to our rehearsal list and fine tune it from there.
Where and when did you record? Tell us about the studio work process.
Except for the Drums everything was recorded in Rick’s studio, the Drums were done at my place where I have a room set up for recording.
The studio work process follows on from the demoing process. Once we are happy with the structure of the song the rough drum tracks from the demo are removed and the track is burned down to an MP3. This is then imported into a new project and used as a guide track for recording the Drums. Once the Drum tracks are complete the guide track is deleted and we begin to record the other instruments properly.
When all of the music is recorded we do a rough mix and then it’s onto the vocal stage of recording, again we tend to do a rough vocal and take it away and listen to it to make sure we are happy with how it sounds and to look for where things need refining or improving and then go back to the Studio and do them again properly. All that’s left then is to mix the track and get it sent out for mastering.
Please introduce the EP briefly to the readers. What are the major things on it?
False Mystical Prose clocks in at just under forty minutes of music and contains four songs. There is no underlying theme to the collection as a whole; rather, each song is an individual entity that represents different aspects of the band and where we are going with Gallow God. You can expect a clear and hopefully powerful production, emotional guitar lines, and somber vocals.
During the recording of the EP each of us were dealing with tragic episodes in our personal lives and I think a lot of that was channeled into the songs, When I listen to Ricks Guitars on “The Sin and Doom of Godless men” I know the awful place they are coming from and hopefully that translates to the listener. None of the emotion on the EP is fake, and a lot is still left to be said.
Great Britain gave a lot of good doom bands to the world like old Anathema, My Dying Bride, Warning, Cathedral, Electric Wizard etc. Do you think Great Britain played a major role in forming the doom scene?
I would say so yes, in my mind Black Sabbath started the whole thing, but I wouldn’t really say things got going fully until the 90s when we had as you say My Dying Bride, Cathedral, Anathema and also Solstice, it’s just England man, there is something about it here that breeds miserable music, even popular mainstream bands like Coldplay and Radiohead all play miserable stuff…Maybe it’s the weather!
But that is not to say that many other countries have not been as influential in Doom, I mean in the late 70s you had Saint Vitus, Trouble and Pentagram from the states, early 80s and you have Candlemass from Sweden and then into the 90s you’ve got Solitude Aeturnus again representing the states as well as the British bands named above. There really are too many cool bands to mention that have left their mark on Doom Metal, the lists above really only touch on the well known stuff.
At the moment I think Doom metal as a Genre is very healthy with quality music coming from all over the world and especially from places you least expect! Keep an eye on the UK though, there are some amazing new bands out there at the moment that I expect we will see great things from.
What are the future plans? When will you release the debut album?
We are working on the album at the moment, we probably have four songs that have made it past the demo stage and Jim will be laying down the Drum tracks for them in the coming weeks, and we have maybe another five or six songs that are in the demo process now. We are aiming to release the album toward the end of October 2011.
Other plans include a Vinyl release of False Mystical Prose in conjunction with PsycheDOOMelic records and Italy’s Terror from Hell Records, a new T – Shirt deal and maybe a couple of local warm up gigs over the summer to see how we get on in a live situation, as well as about a million other things we need to get done!
