Eric, mindenekelőtt tiszteletem és üdvözletem a KME és a magyar death metal fanatikusok nevében, köszönöm, hogy elfogadtad az interjú felkérést? Hogy vagy manapság?
Köszönöm szépen, én is üdvözöllek téged és a magyar death metál rajongókat! Enyém a megtiszteltetés hogy érdeklődtök irántam. Jól vagyok, köszi, kezemben egy jó erős feketekávé és egy jóféle sodort cigi, tehát készen állok az interjúra. Csapjunk hát a lovak közé!
Az Asphyx On The Wings Of Inferno lemezén hallhattuk utoljára játékodat. Mi volt az oka annak, hogy közel 9 évre „kivontad magadat a forgalomból”? Ezalatt az idő alatt nem is fogtál gitárt a kezedbe?
Más dolgokkal voltam elfoglalva. Legjobb, ha úgy tekintünk rá, mint pár évnyi őrületes zenélés utáni jól megérdemelt pihenés. Az „On the wings…” album után volt pár koncertünk de más dolgaim is akadtak. Szereztem egy állást, a mai napig azt csinálom. Beletelt néhány évbe míg rátaláltam erre a melóra, de a végén csak sikerült. Családi élet is megvolt, de 4 évvel ezelőtt igen csúnya vége lett. Tényleg nem szeretnék részletekbe bocsátkozni, a közeli barátaim tudják, hogy mi történt, és szeretném, ha ez így is maradna. A lényeg, hogy kellett ez a kis kikapcs ahhoz, hogy ismét az a zenész lehessek, aki ma vagyok. Az tény, hogy szinte hozzá sem nyúltam a gitáromhoz ez alatt a 9 év alatt, de így belegondolva jól tettem. Az albumba öntöttem minden ihletemet, amit addig visszafojtottam. Tiszta lappal, újra kezdve. Soha nem gondoltam volna, hogy ilyesmi megtörténhet, mondtam is a többieknek. Ez a legszebb dolog az életben.
Már 2 évvel ezelőtt elkezdtem írni a dalokat, aztán mikor a gitáromért nyúltam, egyszerre csak előtört belőlem az a rengeteg elnyomott inspiráció. Bob volt az, aki megadta a lökést a visszatéréshez, bár soha nem volt betervezve, és soha nem beszéltünk róla. Egyszerűen csak kíváncsi voltam, hogy hogy megy a gitározás. Azóta szinte minden nap előveszem a gitárt 1-1 órára. Rájöttem, hogy mennyi mindent kihagytam, hiányzott a kreatívkodás, a zeneszerzés. Örülök, hogy csinálhatom. Jó érzéssel tölt el, az se baj ha én magam vagyok egy személyben a közönség és a zenész. Nagyon sok személyes dolog lezajlott ez alatt a 9 év alatt. Jó újra zenélni, és a legjobb hogy ezt a legjobb barátaimmal csinálhatom.
A Grand Supreme Blood Court-ban tértél vissza, mely csapatot 2009-ben alapítottad The Company Of Undertakers néven, hogyan állt össze a tagság? Gondolom nem kellett őket sokat győzködni, hogy csatlakozzanak hozzád, igaz?
Az eredeti elképzelés az volt, hogy indítunk egy kis projektet The Company of Undertakers névvel. Az, hogy miért nem lett belőle semmi, betudható a ráfordítható szabadidő és a tényleges elszántság hiányának. Sok riff lapos maradt, nem volt összhang, sok dalból csak részletek voltak meg. A lakhelyeink közötti óriási távolság sem volt túlontúl előnyös.
Aztán egyszer Bob, Martin és én átnéztük az anyagokat, amiket addig összehoztunk. Bementünk a próbaterembe és befejeztünk két dalt. Ezek meg is találhatóak az albumon. Mivel az egész egy új kezdet volt, Martin felhozta a Grand Supreme Blood Court-ot névként. Ez hivatott jelezni, hogy nem csak projekt-státuszunk van, hanem egy önálló zenekar vagyunk. A „pihenésem” évei alatt is tartottuk egymás között a kapcsolatot Bobbal és Martinnal, így természetes volt az újrakezdésnél, hogy velük, a barátaimmal akarok zenélni.
Azt olvastam facebook oldalatokon, hogy a GSBC nevet Martin vetette fel, amely kiválóan foglalja össze a banda mögötti koncepciót. Ezt kifejtenéd nekünk bővebben?
A GSBC Bob és az én fejemből pattant ki, azonban az egész elképzelés az albumról és dalszövegekről, na azok Martin ötletei alapján öltöttek alakot, meg is jegyezném, hogy szerintem remek munkát végzett. Számomra remek érzés hogy újra velük zenélhetek, Alwin és Theo is beszálltak a zenekarba és Alwinnal együtt toljuk a riffeket és a dalokat.
Az alapötlet jó volt! Egy Grand Jury és Supreme Court keverék. De olyan, hogy Blood Court volt már, és tán még most is létezik. Az elképzelés az volt, hogy egy olyan albumot készítünk, ahol a zenék címei kapcsolódnak egymáshoz mind ötletben mind zeneileg mind dalszövegben. Így Martin kitalálta a zenekar nevét, és bevetette szakértelmét szövegírás, zenecím és albumcím terén is.
Mikor kezdtetek el dolgozni a dalokon? Milyen munkamódszerrel dolgoztatok, hogyan álltak össze a számok?
Alwin, Bob és én szereztük a dalokat és állítottuk össze őket felvételre. Két dal már megvolt korábbról, azok amiket Martinnal és Bobbal csináltunk, azoknak fix helyük volt. Nagyjából két éve elkezdtem riffeket csinálni, felraktam gépre, átküldtem Bobnak és Martinnak mp3-ként, ők pedig egyből imádták, örültek is, hogy visszatérek a zenei szakmába. Most Alwinnal együtt csinálom a riffeket, remekül kiegészítjük egymást. Tudjuk egymás heppjeit, ki mit szeret, így vele a legjobb dolgoznom. Két gitárt is hallhatsz a lemezen, amolyan kis ráadásként, így téve teljessé a dalokat. Mutatja, hogy rengeteg lehetőségünk van a jövőre nézve, és több igazán ütős dalt is össze tudunk hozni.
Először összegyűjtöm a korábban felvett riffjeimet, és átküldöm a többieknek. Bobbal megbeszéljük, hogy hogyan is kezdődjön a szám és hogy milyen stílusa legyen, mint pl.: közepes tempó vagy doom szerű kezdés. Összegyúrjuk ami van és megnézzük hogy hogyan kerekednek ki belőlük a riffek. Ehhez az albumhoz Alwinnal ketten elég sok dalt hoztunk össze. A legtöbb riff tőlem van, de Alwin ötletei és riffjei kiválóan összepasszoltak a sajátjaimmal, és ha esetleg elakadtam ő egyből kiegészített. A zenekaron belül igen nyílt az elrendezkedés. Bárki előhozakodhat ötletekkel, nincsen kijelölt „ötletfelelős”. Az ilyet szeretem, így jobban érezni, ha mindegyikünknek egyértelműen tetszik a dal. A cél, hogy közösen hozzuk össze a legjobb dalokat. Mivel a többieknek kicsit sűrűek a napjaik, így alap, hogy én álltam elő a legtöbb riffel. Pihentetőbb is volt így.
Alwinnak megvan a felszereltsége, hogy házi demó-dalokat készítsen. Gitározgattunk kicsit, feltoltuk gépre, Alwin félkész állapotba hozta a dalokat néhány számítógépes basszussal és dobbal, így kaptunk egy körülbelüli állapotot a dalról és a riffek számáról. Móka is volt, érdekelt is a módszer. Mind a tíz számot így csináltuk, aztán véglegesítés után felvettük stúdióban a dalokat ezeknek a demóknak segítségével. A Sonic Assaultban voltak a felvételek, Frank volt a hangmérnökünk, jó volt velük dolgozni.
Kivel és mely stúdióban dolgoztatok? Mennyi idő alatt készültetek el a felvételekkel?
A zenét a Sonic Assaultban vettük fel Frank segítségével, a vokálokat pedig a Harrow Productions stúdióban, ahol Harry állt rendelkezésünkre. Remekül éreztük magunkat a felvételek ideje alatt, kifejezetten relaxáló és kellemes a légkör, ez szerintem kitűnik a felvételekből is. Dan Swanö összedobott egy kiváló mixet, értette és érezte, hogy mit akarunk zeneileg kihozni az albumból. Aranyat ér az, amit ő a potmétereken tekerget. A felvételek cirka 2 hétig tartottak.
Rögzítettetek demókat is?
Hivatalos demó-album nincs. A demó felvételek a végleges felvételek alapjául szolgáltak. Alwinnal felvettük a gitározást, hogy meg legyen az alap elképzelés a hangzásról. Alwin csinálja a demó felvételeket gépi dobbal és basszussal. Mint már említettem, a gitározós részeket gépen rögzítjük és kis bütyköléssel összehozunk egy végleges állapotot. Ezeket a felvételeket használtuk a stúdiós rögzítések alkalmával mint irányadó, plusz adott egy alapot a tempóról és a riffek számáról. Bejött, a jövőbeli dalszerzések és felvételek során is ez lesz a rendszer.
A Bow Down Before The Blood Court egy nagyon gyilkos, tömény death metal album lett, te személy szerint mit mondanál a lemezről?
Ezt az albumot meg akartuk csinálni, minden előkészület ezért volt. A végső eredmény az elvárásainkat tükrözi. Dan Swanö szakértelme által tényleg megkaptuk azt, amit akartunk. Ő egy arany ember az ő kis arany tekerentyűivel, a mi hatodik tagunk. Mindent összefoglalva, kifejezetten elégedettek vagyunk az albummal kapcsolatosan. Jól sikerült, jól csináltuk és jól is éreztük magunkat közben.
Az összes megírt dalt feltettétek a korongra vagy maradtak esetleg fel nem használt témák, dalok? Rögzítettek esetleg feldolgozásokat is?
Nem, nincs felhasználatlan anyag, jelen pillanatban üresen konganak az összes ihlet-tartályaink. Minden rákerült az albumra, ez a végleges állapot, tehát a kihívás adott: új dalokat írni ugyanezzel a módszerrel, frissen és kikúrt brutálisan. Ez az album ordít egy jó folytatásért és mi hiszünk benne, hogy lesz, de először kiélvezzük ezt a lemezt és amit felénk sodor. Mind az öten pokoli jó munkát végeztünk, bizonyám!
Milyenek eddig a visszajelzések a lemezre?
Hát, az album most jelent meg Európában és az Államokban. Folyamatosan kapjuk a jobbnál jobb értékeléseket, aminek nagyon örülünk, vigyorgunk is, mint a tejbetök. Mindig izgalmas egy-egy új megjelenés előtti időszak, vajon mik lesznek a vélemények, hogy fogadják az újságok, a rajongók, stb. Hát eddig nincs sok okunk panaszra.
Jövőbeni terveitekről mit kell tudni? Gondolkodtok-e további lemezekben? Azáltal, hogy a többiek más zenekarokban is érdekeltek, mennyire lesz (lehet) aktív a GSBC?
Előszöris kicsit hátradőlünk, és meglátjuk, mit hoz az album, majd azok alapján mérlegeljük, hogy mit várhatunk a koncertektől. Jövőbeli tervek között szerepel egy újabb album, hogy folytatódhasson a GSBC története. Jelen pillanatban igen nagy figyelem összpontosul ránk, tehát mindenképp tartogat nekünk valamit zene terén a jövő. Az fix hogy a több bandában játszó tagoknak kicsit húzós lesz összehozni, de remek ügynökségünk van, aki elintézi, hogy minden úgy alakuljon, ahogy jó lesz, így szerintem rendben leszünk. Az tuti, hogy a GSBC aktív marad.

Eric, first of all, it’s an honor. I’d like to greet you on behalf of KME and the Hungarian death metal fans. Thank you for taking the time for this interview. How are you nowadays?
Thank you very much, my greetings back to you and our Hungarian death metal fans! The pleasure is all mine to do this interview. I am doing fine thank you, a very nice black strong coffee and my hand rolled tobacco cigarette, ready to go for this interview. Let’s start the trial!
We’ve heard you last on Asphyx on the Wings of Inferno. Why did you “decommission” yourself for the past nine years? Did you even touch a guitar during this period?
I was focusing on other things. Best to see it as a long time rest I needed, after some crazy musical years. After the “On the wings…” album we did some shows and I needed to focus on other things. I got a job and climb into it till today. It took me some years to reach the job I wanted to do and succeeded in that. I also had a family life, but 4 years ago it went out not so good. I don’t want to go into detail, it’s too personal, but my best friends know and want to keep it this way. Most important is that I needed those years to be a musician again till today. I almost never touched my guitar in those 9 years, and looking back it’s good I did not. All inspiration I kept inside now I used for the album. A fresh start and in another time. I never thought it would happen again, I also told the other guys, but that’s the most beautiful things in life. I am writing music for 2 years already and those hidden inspiration was seeing the daylight when I picked up the guitar again. It was Bob actually who gave me the inspiration and urge to step in again, however we did not planned and spoke about this. It was just a feeling I had to pick up that guitar again, just to see for myself how it will turn out. From two years now I play my guitars every day about one hour. I found out I missed it soo much, be creative and composing again. It gives me a sort of happiness inside, a well-done feeling, no matter if I play only for myself. Lots of things happened at the personal side in those 9 years. Now it feels good to make music again, and most important to have my best friends to make the music with.
You’ve returned in Grand Supreme Blood Court, which you’ve established in 2009 under the name The Company of Undertakers. How did you find the members? I guess they didn’t need much convincing to join you.
The original idea was to do a project with the name The Company Of Undertakers. The reason it was not lifted from the ground was the busy schedule and commitments of everyone in this project. Some riffs kept laying down, nothing picked up, also some complete song-parts. The long distance between our home-towns also wasn’t very lucrative. But after a while Bob, Martin and me we looked through the material we made that time ago, went into the rehearsal-room and finished two complete songs. Those songs also are being recorded on the album. Because this was a new start and beginning, Martin came up with the name Grand Supreme Blood Court. It was born and to be meant as a band of its own, not a project-status anymore. Bob, Martin and I we just kept in touch all those years I was out from the scene, it was natural to me when I started to play again, I only wanted to play with my friends.
I’ve read on your Facebook page that GSBC was Martin’s idea, which reflects excellently on the band’s “behind the scene” concept. Could you elaborate on this?
The idea for GSBC came from Bob and me, the whole concept for the album and of course the lyrics that were Martin’s idea to give it shape, and he did a great job on that. To me it feels good to play with my friends again, Alwin and Theo involved in the band, and together with Alwin we composed the riffs and songs. Well, the concept sounded very cool! A combination between the Grand Jury and the Supreme Court. But the Blood Court did exist and perhaps it exists although still in current time. The whole idea behind this concept to create an album which the song titles match with this idea, music-wise and the lyrics as well. Martin created the band-name and his expertise to write the lyrics and song titles as the album title as well.
When did you begin working on the new songs? What’s your method, how is a song born?
Alwin, Bob and me we together composed and arranged all the songs for the record. 2 songs were made earlier, and those ones we did Martin, Bob and me to made them definite. About 2 years ago I started to compose riffs and recorded them into my pc, made mp3 from that sent to Bob and Martin, they liked it right away and they were feeling good I was becoming back to make music again. Together Alwin and I we did the most riff writing, we are a golden tandem as said, we know each other what we like and the best way to compose the riffs together. You will hear two guitars on the album, just that extra touch to complete the songs. That we have many possibilities in future to make solid good songs. First I collect the best riffs I made, recorded them at home, and sent to the other guys. Together Bob and I discuss on how a song begins and what kind of song we want to make, like mid-tempo or doom-like begin of a song. We work that out, and just see how the riffs fit together. On the writing process for this album, Alwin and I did compose a lot together. Most riffs I made however Alwin his ideas and riffs fitted with mine and when I was stuck he filled in exactly. The structure inside the band is very open. Everyone can ventilate their ideas, it’s not from 1 person only. I like it this way, cause the feeling we all like the definite songs is much more right. The goal is to make the best songs together. Cause I had more time, due to the busy schedules of the other boys, it was natural that I made a lot of riffs. It was relaxt to do so on this way. Alwin has the skills to make demo-songs at home. We played the guitars live in the computer, and he made the songs ready with computer bass and drums, to get the idea of the song and the counts of the riffs. It was fun and thrilled to do so. We did all 10 songs this way, and when we decide the songs are final, we record all songs in studio with the guide of the demo-songs. We recorded at Sonic Assault studio with Frank as engineer, and it was nice to do so.
With who and in which studio did you work with? How long did the recordings last?
We recorded the music at the Sonic Assault studio by Frank and the vocals at Harrow Productions studio by Harry. It was a great time to record there, very relaxed and good atmosphere, which is also be heard at the recordings. Dan Swano made an excellent mix together, he did understand and knew how we wanted the sound, the man with the golden knobs. The recordings all in guess in total about 2 weeks.
Any demos?
Not official demo-tapes. These demo-tapes we made as sort of layers for the original recordings. Alwin and I recorded the guitars at my place at home, to give an idea how the songs will turn up. Alwin has the skills to make demo-tapes, with computer drums and bass. As I said we record our guitar parts into the computer, and made them complete. We used these demo-tapes in the official studio’s to give an example and also the numbers about riffs and tempo’s. This worked very nice and that process we use for further compositions and recordings.
“Bow Down Before the Blood Court” turned out to be a pretty damn massive and crushing death metal. What would you personally say about it?
This album we just had in mind to record, the view and preparations were made for this. The final result is about our expectations. Due to the craftmanship from Dan Swano, he gave us the production we really liked and wanted. He’s de man with the golden knobs, our 6th band-member. So all said, we are pretty damn happy with this album, it feels good, the whole process was right, and we had lots of fun making this album.
Are all the finished materials on the album, or you’ve kept a few unused themes, songs? Any covers?
No we have no unused themes, the inspiration is complete dry at the moment, all is used for this album, it is finished in this shape, so the challenge is there to make new compositions, the same process as this one, fresh and damn brutal it will be, this album screams for a decent continuer. The faith and believe is there for the second one, but first we enjoy the release and the things which approach to us. We all 5 did a hell of a job, cheerz !!!
How’s the reception so far?
Well, the album is just released in Europe and the US. We got and still getting very awesome and terrific reviews for the album. We are very satisfied and happy with this response, it’s always exciting before a new release how it will be taken by the fans, magazines etc. So far we enjoy the attention.
What should we know about your future plans? More albums maybe? Since the members play in other bands, will/can GSBC remain active?
We first gonna enjoy the release of the album, and as an result of that see what’s coming our way concerning doing live shows. Future plans are to make another album, just continue the story of GSBC. But on the moment lots of attention coming our way, we definitely have musical future plans. Sure the schedule would be busy for the members in other bands, but we have a terrific agency who taking care about planning, so it’s all gonna be ok. GSBC will remain active, sure to say.
