Hardbone Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

Hogyan foglalnátok össze a Hardbone eddigi pályafutását?

2006 végén kezdtük a bandát. A jelenlegi felállás: John Kölln (dobok), Wolfgang Pohl (Basszus), Tommy Lindemann (Ritmus gitár), Sebastian Kranke (Szóló gitár) és Tim Damman (Ének). John a kosárlabda csapatomban játszott.

Szerintem a rock’n’roll kortalan.

Melyek a legfontosabb zenei hatásotok?

A lemezt megelőzően rendelkeztetek-e felvételekkel?

Igen, 3 számos demot készítettünk még 2007-ben. A számok a „I Sold My Soul For Rock ‘n’ Roll”, „I Don’t Care” és „Unlocked ‘n’ Loaded”.

Mikor álltatok neki a Dirty ’N’ Young megírásának?

Hogyan történik nálatok a dalszerzés?

Általában a számok a teljes banda munkája. Miközben játsszuk őket, mindig van valakinek valami ötlete. De ahogy mondtam, minden egy riffel kezdődik.

A stúdiózásról mit kell tudnunk? Mennyi idő alatt végeztetek a felvételekkel?

A felvétel két hétig tartott, néhány lépésből megvolt. Utána ott van még a keverés, masterelés. A stúdiózás nagyszerű móka, viszont kemény munka is. Nézzétek meg a ’Hogyan készült a Dirty’n’Young’ filmet a YouTube-on.

A tipikus szex, drogok, rock’n’roll inspirálja a mondanivalótokat?

Igen, ezek teljes mértékben illenek a dalszövegeinkre. A dalszövegeink általában megtörtént eseményen alapszanak. Szerintem a kanadai kritikus rohadt jól leírta: „Ezeket a srácokat aztán rohadtul nem érdekli a bálnák megmentése!”

Visszatérve a muzsikához: a glam/haj vonal (pl. Ratt, Mötley Crüe, Faster Pussycat, Pretty Boy Floyd stb.) is közel áll hozzátok?

Eddig milyen visszajelzések érkeztek a korongra?

Koncertek terén mi a helyzet?

A jövőben mit várhatunk tőletek?

ENGLISH VERSION:

Guys, this is your first interview given to a Hungarian metal organisation, right?

Yeah, that’s true. It’s pretty cool to know that you guys took notice of us in Hungary, too.

As I/we do not know anything of you yet, firstly I’d be curious how and when did your band come to life, who’s in the line-up? How would you summarize the career of Hardbone as of now?

We started the band at the end of 2006. The line up nowadays: John Kölln (drums), Wolfgang Pohl (Bass), Tommy Lindemann (Rhythm Guitar), Sebastian Kranke (Lead Guitar) and Tim Damman (Vocals). Except for Wolfgang on bass this was our original line up. Wolfgang joined the band about one and a half years ago before we started to record our first album. John was in my basketball team. I knew that was playing the drums and when I started to play the guitar I asked him whether he wanted to join me for a jam session. Tim and Tommy joined the band later on. I met them at an AC/DC cover band show. Our first bass player joined the band as the last member. I met him at work while I was taking a piss. When the band was complete we started to play some AC/DC stuff. After a while we wanted to do our own songs and got started with writing and rehearsing at the end of 2006. Our name was UNCUT at first. We had to change our name due to legal reasons before we released our first album. We had to get used to our new name first, but today we think that HARDBONE fits us much better. It’s quite ambiguous and sounds rough. That’s quite a good description for us and our music. Our career so far has been affected by playing live a lot and spreading some rock ‘n’ roll wherever possible. We’ll keep on doing that as long as we can!

Was it hard to find the committed, fanatic people for your music?

It’s not hard to find people who love rock ‘n’ roll. But it is hard to find people of our age who really are committed and are serious about celebrating and living old school rock ‘n’ roll like we do. Wolfgang also is „a little” older than the rest of the band, but he fits in perfectly. I believe that rock ‘n’ roll doesn’t know any age. Unfortunately not everybody thinks about it like this.

What made you start playing music?

In general one could say that it was just our excitement about true rock ‘n’ roll. There’s probably nothing more magic than a genuine, raw guitar riff. If you’ve got it in your heart and in your body, it will find you. But we probably have also been affected by family members who made music before we did.

What are your most important musical influences?

We like all sorts of old school and riff or blues based rock ‘n’ roll. Only to mention a few there are great bands like AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, Rhino Bucket, ZZ Top and many others who influenced us a lot. But I believe that any song, any experience or any person can inspire you to make great music.

Have you recorded any demos? Did you have any recordings before the album?

Yes, we recorded a three track demo at the end of 2007. The songs on it were „I Sold My Soul For Rock ‘n’ Roll”, „I Don’t Care” and „Unlocked ‘n’ Loaded”. They also made it on our Album Dirty ‘n’ Young. The demo was called First Strike and really helped us spreading our name and getting more gigs.

When did you start writing Dirty ’N’ Young? Did you go to the studio with ready made songs or did you make some jams there, too?

When you are a band with limited financial means like we are (and like almost any band is), it’s quite impossible to hit the studio without (at least almost) completed songs. Otherwise the recording time would take much too long. But what we did was taking the songs a little step further whith the help of our producer Arne Lakenmacher. He had a few ideas for some parts of the songs. We tried them and kept them when we were diggin it.

How does songwriting take place for the band?

As the basis for a song we always start with a riff, which is developed by Tommy or me. Sometimes we put complete songs together and take them to the rehearsals then. And sometimes we just have a riff and play it in front of the others, so that they can add their ideas. Usually songs are a real product of the group. While playing the song and taking it further there’s always someone of us who has got a great idea. But as said before, it always starts with a riff.

What should we know about the studio work? How much time did it take to be ready with the recordings?

We recorded the album in a few steps. All together it took about two weeks to record the whole thing. Of course the mix and mastering still had to be done then. The studio work was mostly a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work. You have to be very concentrated while playing and listening, but when the serious part was done we always had a few drinks and were joking around. Just have a look for our „Making of Dirty ‘n’ Young” on YouTube.

The reviews I’ve read of Hardbone compared you to Rose Tattoo, but I think your music is rather similar to AC/DC or the Danish D. A. D., but Little Ceasar isn’t far from your music either, what do you think of that?

Of course AC/DC was a big influence as well as Rose Tattoo and many others. They are gods, man! Our drummer also likes D.A.D but I think they are quite soft compared to us. Of course everybody is influenced by someone else and everybody has got his favourite style but what is most important I guess, is that you go your own way and develop your own sound no matter who you are compared with by others or what others think about you. And I think we did that.

Sadly I don’t have your lyrics, could you tell us something of those, too? Are you inspired by the typical things, sex drugs and rock’n’roll?

Yeah, those three words describe our lyrics pretty well. We think that rock ‘n’ roll should be fun and easy to listen to. We just want our fans to have a fucking great time. In general our lyrics are inspired by true stories of our lives. I think a guy from Canada who wrote a review about Dirty ‘n’ Young got it damn right when it comes to the lyrics: „These guys really don’t give a shit about saving the whales!”

Turning back to your music: is the glam/hair style (e.g. Ratt, Mötley Crüe, Faster Pussycat, Pretty Boy Floyd, etc.) also close to you?

Although we like Mötley Crüe and a few other bands of the hair spray type, we are pretty opposite. We just don’t give a damn about dressing up and shit. Who wants to see a hairy fat guy in skin tight spandex and make up anyways?

Your song Booze, Blood, Blackout is featured on the promo CD of the German Metal Hammer, did this help you to spread your music to more and more fans?

We hope so. We did not get that much response on that especially, but in general the word about HARDBONE seems to be spread pretty well after the release of our album. Fortunately there still seems to be a lot of interest for quite unknown bands and old school rock ‘n’ roll.

What feedback did you get for the album as of now?

Many people are suprised and happy as well that quite young guys like us still play and enjoy this kind of music and they tell us that they really enjoy our album and play it a lot. We are always proud to hear stuff like that, because we really want to help keeping true rock ‘n’ roll alive. That’s what we believe in. But the best feedback is, when people buy our album after a show, although they had seen us for the very first time.

What about concerts? Did you perform shows outside the borders of Germany or only at home? What’s the atmosphere like on a Hardbone party?

Up to now we mostly play in Germany. But we already played in Denmark and plan to do more shows beyond German borders in the future. Rock ‘n’ roll is supposed to be celebrated live and that’s what we love doing. A HARDBONE show is just a big party. When we hit the stage we just want people to have a lot of beer and a lot of fun. We just get up there and tear it apart. The fans can see how much fun we have playing rock ‘n’ roll and that’s the most infective thing about us.

What can we expect from you in the future? When will you start making the new material?

We already started writing new material and are planning to start the recordings for a new album in fall. Just expect more rock ‘n’ roll like it’s supposed to be: Dirty, hard, rough and fun! And we hope to be able to play much more shows in a wider range of clubs and countries in the future.

Thank you for the interview, wish you all the best!

Thank you! Our pleasure. Keep up the good work and thank you very much for your interest in us and our music. We really appreciate that.
