Ross, legutóbb 3 éve jelent meg Immolation kiadvány a Shadows In The Light. Mai fejjel/füllel mit gondolsz arról a lemezről? Mennyire váltotta be a hozzáfűzött reményeket?
Mind nagyon elégedettek vagyunk az új a „Shadows in the Light” lemezzel, szerintem egészen erősre sikeredett, és nagyszerű visszajelzéseket kaptunk a médiából és élőben egyaránt. A dalszövegek nagyon sokrétűek a számok pedig erőteljesek, és egy fontos lépést jelent a „Harnessing Ruin” után, ami szintén nagyszerűen sikerült. Eddig nagyon elégedettek vagyunk azzal, amit elértünk ezzel a lemezzel, de azért mindig lehet fejlődni. Mindent, ami nem tetszett, figyelembe vettünk és javítottunk rajta, ami egy nagy lépés volt affelé, ahol most a „Majesty and Decay”-vel tartunk. Egy másik pozitív dolog a „Shadows in the Light”-tal kapcsolatban, hogy az Államokban és Európában is nagyon sokat turnéztunk, beleértve két európai fesztivált is, ami sokat segített, hogy a bandát az egész világon figyelemmel kísérhessék és, hogy sok, új rajongót ismerhessünk meg.
A lemezt megelőző Ep-vel, a Hope And Horror-ral mi volt a célotok? Azelőtt sosem csináltatok Ep-ket! Azok a dalok kizárólag az Ep-re íródtak?
Az EP-ről már évek óta beszélgetünk, végül Laurent, a Listenable-ből javasolta, hogy hozzuk össze, mire úgy döntöttük, hogy csináljuk. Aztán elkezdtük írni az anyagot a „Shadows in the Light” albumhoz, valamint az EP-hez. Így 13 számot írtunk, amiből 10-et választottunk ki az albumhoz, 3-at pedig az EP-re. Az egyetlen szám, ami biztos volt, hogy az EP-re kerül, az a hangszeres „The Struggle of Hope and Horror” volt, amit kifejezetten az EP-hez írtunk. Aztán kiválasztottuk a két másik számot is (The Condemned and Den of Thieves), majd hozzáadtuk a bónusz videót, a new york-i élő show-ból. Gondoltuk elég stabil kiadvány lesz, kéz a kézben a teljes albummal, egy különleges és erős anyag, ami egyedül is megáll a lábán.
Az Ep-hez egy koncert dvd is társult, amely egy 2006. április 30-án, a B.B.King Blues Club & Grill-ben felvett fellépést örökített meg, ez kinek az ötlete volt? Nem gondoltatok arra, hogy a koncertet önálló cd-ként is megjelentessétek?
Erről megint csak a Listenable-lel kellett beszélnünk és beleegyeztünk, hogy ha azt akarjuk, hogy különleges és egyedülálló legyen, valami más is kell a 3 stúdió szám mellé. Így az élő fellépések voltak erre a leginkább megfelelőek és teljesen elégedettek vagyunk vele. Néhány éve készítettük a „Bringing Down the World” DVD-t, így itt volt az ideje valami újnak, és egy otthoni manhattan-i show tűnt a legjobb kezdésnek. Nagyszerű buli volt és nagyon közvetlen felvételt tudtunk készíteni, a nézők úgy érezhetik, hogy ott vannak a bulin. Sok anyag előkerül rajta, a „Harnessing Ruin” albumról, ami ez egyetlen album, amit nem turnéztattunk olyan sokat, így most itt volt a lehetőség, hogy a rajongók élőben is hallhassák őket.
Mind az Ep, mind a lemez utolsó kiadványotok volt, melyeket a francia Listenable gondozott, mikor és miért jöttetek el tőlük? Sokat tettek az Immolation népszerűsítésének érdekében? Elégedettek voltatok a kiadó promóciós tevékenységével?
Teljesítettük a Listenable szerződésben megszabott feltételeit, most más ajánlatokat várunk. Nagyon elégedettek vagyunk a Listenable Records-zal és őszintén úgy érzem, hogy nagyon sokat tettek értünk, többet, mint bármely más kiadó előttük. Szeretik a bandát és hisznek bennünk, sokat tesznek azért, hogy előretolják a bandát. Nagyszerű kapcsolat volt, és sajnáljuk, hogy el kellett őket hagynunk, de a banda érdekei miatt úgy döntöttünk, a Nuclear Blast a tökéletes kiadó számunkra. A Nuclear Blast a legutóbbi államok-beli „Shadows…” turnén érdeklődött utánunk. Tudtuk, hogy ez a helyes lépés, mivel egy Európában és az állomkban is nagyon erős kiadóról van szó. Minden várakozásunkat felülmúlta a törődésük a banda iránt és egészen biztosak vagyunk benne, hogy ez volt a helyes döntés.
Mennyi időbe telt megtalálni az új kiadót? Egyáltalán hogyan került a képbe a Nuclear Blast? Ha jól számolom, pályafutásotok során ők most az ötödik kiadótok, igaz?
Nem volt túl hosszú folyamat. Amint megtudtuk, hogy szeretnének velünk dolgozni, beszéltünk a Listenable-lel, hogy tudassuk velük a szándékunkat, aztán továbbléptünk egy mindenki számára elfogadható megállapodással. Néhány hónap múlva, mikot a „Majesty and Decay”-t írtuk, véglegesítettünk mindent és aláírtunk a Nuclear Blast-tal. Azelőtt voltunk a Roadrunner Records-nál, Metal Blade Records-nál, Olympic/Century Media Records-nál and Listenable Records-nál, úgyhogy igen, a Nuclear Blast az ötödik kiadónk az eltelt 22 év alatt.
A Nuclear Blast-en kívül más kiadók is érdeklődtek a csapat iránt? Hány lemezre írtatok alá?
Három másik kiadó is érdekelt minket, a Listenable-t is beleértve, de valójában sosem tárgyaltunk a másik kettővel, mivel egyhangúan a Nuclear Blast volt a cél. Aláírtunk egy 3 albumra szóló szerződést.
Mikor álltatok neki az új anyag megírásának? Hogyan zajlott a dalszerzés? Egyáltalán, hogy zajlik az Immolationnél a dalszerzés?
Ezúttal többet dolgoztunk a számokon, azt akartuk, hogy meg legyen az az áramlás, amit akartunk. Bob 2008-ban, 2009 elején kezdte el írni a számokat. Riffeket és dob alapokat írt, amit felvett az Ableton Live-ra. Valamikor 2009 nyarán elkezdtük dalokká alakítani az anyagot, amikor úgy éreztük, hogy minden rendben, elküldtük a dobosunknak, Steve-nek emailben, Ohio-ba, és elkezdte megtanulni őket, hozzáadta Bob dobalapjaihoz a saját stílusát. Ez egy könnyebb folyamat volt így, mivel több időnk volt finomhangolni és jobban megismerni a számokat, mielőtt stúdióba vonulunk. Szerintem ez miatt karrierünk legjobb albumát sikerült megírnunk, ez lesz a cél a jövőben is.
A szövegek kizárólag a te asztalod, a te hatáskörödbe tartoznak, igaz? Gondolom nem barátkoztál még meg a kereszténységgel, a keresztényekkel, továbbra is ostorozod őket, de kultúrált, igényes formában. Ezek szerint mindig lesz aktuális téma egy-egy Immolation dalhoz:)
Az első pár albumnál a legtöbb dalszöveget én írtam, de az „Unholy Cult” óta, Bob-nak is hatalmas szerepe van az Immolation dalszövegeiben, ami szerintem segített, hogy sokrétűbb és jobb dalíró váljék belőlem. Szeretem az ötleteit, mivel szélesebbé teszi a dalszövegek mondanivalóját. A legtöbb stúdióidőt azzal töltöttem, hogy Bobbal egyeztettem az ötleteket. Nagyszerű folyamat volt, ami fantasztikus végeredményhez vezetett. Valószínűleg én vagyok a legboldogabb a dalszövegeket illetően. Igen, van néhány vallásos témájú szám, de sok másik más témákat érint, mint mondjuk a háború, emberek hatalmi rögeszméje, és az emberiség útja az elmúlt század alatt. Dalszövegét tekintve, az album elég sötét, a számok során átitatva reménytelenséggel.
A felvételek a new yorki Millbrook Sound stúdióban zajlottak Paul Orofino felügyelete alatt, milyen légkörben folytak a felvételek? Mennyi idő alatt állt rendelkezésetekre?
Igen, ismét, már hatodik alkalommal, visszatértünk a Millbrook Sound Studios-ba, Paul Orofino felügyelte a felvételeket. Paul a barátunk és az Immolation család tagja, és az elmúlt 10 évben mindig szerettünk visszamenni a stúdióba. Mindig nagyszerű élmény, segít teljesen a felvételre koncentrálni, anélkül, hogy bármiféle nyomást vagy idegeskedést éreznénk. Nagyon kellemes környezet. Az egyetlen változás ezúttal, hogy a keveréshez és mastereléshez Zack Ohren-t választottuk. Úgy éreztük valami mást kell kipróbálnunk, ezért váltottunk. Zack a legjobb választás volt erre, és az eddigi legjobb hangzású albumot sikerült elkészíteni.
A Shadows In The Light-hoz képest, melyek a legfőbb különbségek és hasonlóságok az új albummal kapcsolatban?
A dalok sokkal erőteljesebbek, lobbanékonyabbak. Van benne valami túláradó érzelem és nagyszerű dinamika. Mindegyik szám nyerő rajta, egyik erősebb és fülbemászóbb, mint a másik, mégis különböznek egymástól. Az biztos, hogy ez az eddigi legsötétebb albumunk, rémisztően fojtó érzésekkel. Rengeteg epikus pillanattal, gyors, súlyos témával teli. Ez az eddigi legjobb albumunk, a hangszerek együtt dolgoznak a hallgatókkal. Összehasonlítani sem lehet a „Shadows..”-zal, mivel egy teljesen más szinten van!
A dalok hangzását és felépítését illetően ezúttal is megkerülhetetlen a Morbid Angelhez való összehasonlítás, ez zavar titeket, dicséretként fogjátok fel, netán megszoktátok már?
Nem igazán hasonlítunk a Morbid Angel-re, soha nem is hasonlítottunk. Tiszteljük és szeretjük a Morbid Angel-t, és már régóta rajongunk értük, de ezt a hasonlítást még senki sem próbálta meg, mivel nem is hasonlítunk. Ha teljesen meghallgatod az új albumot, vagy a régieket, ez teljesen tisztává válik. A dalok máshogyan íródtak, Bob stílusa különbözik Trey-étől, a dalok pedig sűrűek, teljesen más érzetet adnak, olyasmit ami egyedi, míg a Morbid Angelnek teljesen más a stílusa és a hangzása. Ez olyasmi, mint mikor a „80-as évek közepén a tudatlan kritikusok Possession-t a Slayer-hez akarták hasonlítani, mert, hogy ők megpróbálnak mindenben olyanokká válni, mint a Slayer. Ez egy idétlen hasonlítás, mivel nem kellett ahhoz zseninek lenni, hogy rájöjjünk, teljesen más a hangzásuk és zeneileg mindketten valami teljesen mást csinálnak. A köztünk és a Morbid Angel közt való hasonlítgatást, a Slayer/Possessed köztihez hasonlítható. Csak olyan emberek érthetnek ezzel egyet, akiknek fogalmuk sincs, milyen zenét játszunk és próbálnak valaki olyanhoz csatolni, akiket már ismernek. Sok éve nem hallottam már ezt az összehasonlítást és nem hiszem, hogy most kellenne újra kezdeni, mikor 22 éve már, hogy folyamatosan adjuk ki az egyedi albumainkat. Kérlek, világosíts fel, de szerintem azon kívül, hogy mindketten a Death Metal mozgalom születése óta a színen vagyunk és egy stílus zenéjét játsszuk, semmi más hasonlóság sincs köztünk. Szerintem, ha beszélsz valakivel a Morbid Angelből, ő is megerősíti majd ezt.
Koncertek terén hogy álltok? Mikor keltek útra az új lemezt támogató, népszerűsítéssel?
Hivatalosan április végén indul az album turnéja, fellépünk néhány európai fesztiválon és show-n, aztán az Exodus-szal együtt egy amerikai nagy turnét szerveztünk, majd visszatérünk nyárra Európába. Ősszel aztán megint egy teljes államok-beli turné jön, év végén pedig egy teljes európai turné, és ez még csak az idei program 🙂 hahaha.
Hetekkel ezelőtt olvastam, hogy a Nile-lal és a Krisiun-nal turnéztatok, azonban a Nile buszának sofőrje becsavarodott és csapot-papot otthagyva lépett le, otthagyva a zenekart a sivatag közepén. Mivel neked van jogosítványod te vitted el őket a következő koncert helyszínére. Mi történt pontosan?
A Nile sofőrjéne 10 órára felfüggesztették a jogosítványát, mivel rossz osztályú kereskedelmi jogosítványa volt. Az enyémmel semmi baj sem volt, ezért én vezettem a buszukat Új Mexikóba. Végül is jól sült el, a vezető nem vesztette el a jogosítványát, mindenki odaért a show-ra és vicces volt látni a Nile srácok arcát, mikor meglátták, hogy én vezetem a buszukat!!
Sokat játszotok idén Európában? Számíthatunk esetleg egy magyarországi fellépésre is?
Reméljük, eljutunk az album turnéjával Magyarországra is. A „Shadows…”-zal játszottunk ott és nagyszerű volt. Magyarországon mindig szeretünk játszani, nagyszerű és barátságos emberek vannak ott, és mindig sikerül új rajongókat szerezni. Úgy várjuk már a visszatérést!!
Egy kicsit menjünk vissza az időben, eredetileg 1986-ban alakult az Immolation Rigor Mortis néven, de te ekkor még nem voltál velük. Ismerted a csapat demóit?
Jó barátok voltunk Andew-val, a Rigor Mortis énekes/basszerosával és alapító tagjával. Kiadtak egy demo-t „Peace Through Tyranny” címmel még 1986-ban, 1987-ben pedig egy 3 számos hivatalos demo-t is „Decomposed” címmel, majd 1987 végén felvettek hozzá még egy számot a „Warriors of Doom”-ot. Ennyi a hivatalos történetük, 1988 februárjában csatlakoztam Andrew helyére, majd megváltoztattuk a nevünket Immolation-re és elkezdtünk számokat írni. Ez volt az Immolation kezdete és a Rigor Mortis vége. Láttam a helyi show-kat még 1987-ben, az utolsó 1987 decemberében volt.
A te zenei múltadról, előéletedről mit kell tudni?
13 éves korom óta hallgatok metált. Az első koncerten 1984-ben voltam, Dio „Last in Line” show-ján. Iron Maiden-en, Judas Priest-en, Van Halen-en, Black Sabbath-en nőttem fel, aztán súlyosabbakat is hallgattam, mint a Slayer, Venom, Mercyful Fate, Metallica és még extrémebb dolgokat. A metálon kívül más zenéket is szeretek, mint a jazz-t, blues-t, klasszikus rockot és bármit, ami megfog.
A Rigor Mortis olyan másodgenerációs new yorki csapatokkal együtt bukkant fel, mint a Ripping Corpse, a Revenant, a Caligula, a Deathrash stb., mennyire voltál benne a new yorki underground életben? Egy egészséges underground színtér volt ott akkoriban vagy két részre szakadt, egy metalosra és egy hardcore-osra?
Igen, ismerem őket, a legtöbbjükkel fel is léptünk még a ’80-as évek végén. Az akkori underground szcénában éltünk, különösen, mivel new yorkiak vagyunk, nagyon sok jó ny-i bandát ismerünk. Olyanokat, mint a Carnivore, Bloodfeast, New Jersey”s Whiplash és Blessed Death, melyek akkoriban mind gyilkos new yorki és jersey-i bandák voltak. Nagyszerű színtér volt és a hardcore színtér akkoriban nagyon különbözött a metáltól. A két közönség nem igazán keveredett, amikor pedig igen, az katasztrofális harcokhoz és szar előadásokhoz vezettek.
Robert Vigna-val ti alkotjátok a zenekar magját, a kezdetektől fogva itt vagytok, sosem gondoltatok arra, hogy feladjátok az Immolation-t? Gondoltatok arra egyáltalán, hogy 24 év elteltével is itt lesztek, lemezeket adtok ki, turnéztok, interjúkat adtok stb.?
Nem, sosem gondoltuk, hogy ilyen sokáig fogjuk ezt csinálni, csak megtörtént és e megállíthatatlan erővé fejlődött. Nagyon szerencsések vagyunk, hogy még itt lehetünk és számítunk valamit, hogy zenét írhatunk, felvehetjük és koncertezhetünk világszerte. Az egyetlen kezdeti motiváció az volt, hogy súlyos és sötét zenét készítsünk, és hogy játszunk egy két helyen a barátainknak. Sosem gondoltuk, hogy világszerte ismertté válunk és 20 évig együtt leszünk. Az idők során sosem gondolkodtunk olyanon, hogy valami mást kéne csinálni, mert imádjuk azt, amit csinálunk és mindig éreztük, hogy az Immolation-ben van valami kiaknázatlan lehetőség. Ă–rülünk, hogy még mindig itt vagyunk és van bennünk még jónéhány év!!
Mi az, ami még hajt, motivál benneteket?
A zene szeretete és, hogy élveztük az eddigi utazás minden részét (írást, felvételt, turnézást, az utazást, a rajongókkal való találkozásokat). Ez számunkra még mindig szenvedély, amit élvezünk.

Ross, the last release of Immolation was published three years ago, with the name: Shadows In The Light. What do you think of that release now? Did you achieve what you intented with it?
We are all very happy with the „Shadows in the Light” album and feel it was a strong release for us and it received great reviews in the media and a great response live. It was a great album for us because it had a great lyrical diversity and the songs were all very strong and powerful, and it was the important next step following the „Harnessing Ruin” album which also did really well for us. For the time, I would have to say we were very satisfied with what we achieved with this record, but of course there is always room for improvement. Any of the things we were unhappy with we addressed and fixed for the new release, so it was an important step in getting to where we are now with „Majesty and Decay”. Another positive aspect of the „Shadows in the Light” album was the fact that we did a lot of touring both in the US and in Europe, including two sets of European festival runs, so this was all very important in strengthening the bands following over the globe and allowing us to reach many new fans.
What were your intentions with the Hope And Horror EP? You have never done an EP before that one! Where those songs intented for the EP only?
The EP was something we had talked about for years, but ultimately it was Laurent from Listenable who suggested we make it a reality, and we agreed and decided to make it a reality. When we were writing the material for the „Shadows in the Light” album, we were also writing for the EP, so we wrote 13 songs and chose 10 for the full length, and we chose 3 for the EP. The only song that was a definite for the EP was the instrumental „The Struggle of Hope and Horror”, which was written exclusively for the EP. We then picked the final two songs (The Condemned and Den of Thieves) to round out the EP track list and added the bonus video footage form the NY live show as an added bonus. We thought it was a solid release that really went hand in hand with the full length, and we think the material is very unique and strong enough to carry the EP as a separate release.
There’s a concert DVD included with the EP, which was recorded in B.B.King Blues Club & Grill on 30 april 2006 – whose idea was it? Haven”t you thought of releasing a standalone concert disc?
Again, we had talk about this with Listenable and agreed that something additional was needed in addition to the 3 studio songs to make the EP unique and stand alone. So the live show was the perfect addition and we were very happy with the result. We had already done the „Bringing Down the World” DVD a few years earlier, so it was time to try something new, and a hometown show in Manhattan was the perfect way to go. It was a great show, and it was a very intimate recording that gave the viewer the impression that they were at the show. It also featured a lot of material of the „Harnessing Ruin” album, which was the only album that we didn”t do as much touring for, so it was a chance for the fans to experience some of these songs in the live setting.
Just like your EP and your last record were published by Listenable, from France. Why and when did you decide to part with them? Did they do enough to increcase Immolation’s popoularity? Were you satisfied with the given promotion?
We had fulfilled our contractual obligations with Listenable in Europe and were ready to entertain other offers. We were very happy with Listenable Records and honestly felt like they really did the most for us out of all the previous labels we were on. They really liked the band and they really believed in the potential we had and tried their best to push the band forward and expose us to new people and markets. It was really a great relationship we had with them, and we were sad to have to move forward, but we really had to do what was best for the band, and it was unanimously decided that Nuclear Blast was the perfect label for the band at this point in our career. Nuclear Blast expressed interest in working with us during our last tour here in the states for the „Shadows…” album. We knew this would be the right move for us because they are a very strong label not just in Europe, but in the US, which is just as important for us. So far they have gone beyond even our expectations in their treatment and enthusiasm towards us, and we are very confident that we made the right move.
How long did you take to find a new publisher? How did you even manage to find Nuclear Blast? If I’m not mistaken, they are the fifth publisher in your carreer.
It really wasn”t a long process. Once we knew they were interested in working with us, we spoke with Listenable a number of times to let them know our intentions, and then we proceeded to move forward with negotiating a deal that would work for both of us. After a few months, and while we were writing the material for „Majesty and Decay”, we finalized everything and signed the deal with Nuclear Blast. We had previously been with Roadrunner Records, Metal Blade Records, Olympic/Century Media Records and Listenable Records, so yes, Nuclear Blast is the fifth label we have been signed to over the course of the last 22 years.
Were there any other publishers interested besides Nuclear Blast? For how many records did you sign?
We had interest from about three other labels including Listenable, but we never really ever got to the negotiating table with these other two because we were all unanimous in our decision to pursue Nuclear blast for the deal. We signed a worldwide deal with them for 3 albums.
When did you start with the new material? How was the songwriting done? How are the Immolation songs written in general?
This time around we spent more time on crafting the new songs and making sure they flowed exactly how we wanted them to flow. Bob began the writing process at the end of 2008/early 2009. He began writing new riffs and composing rough drum beats to them and recording them into his Ableton Live program. Once late summer 2009 came around, we began the process of arranging the material into songs, and once we were happy with the arrangements, he would email the completed rough songs to our drummer Steve in Ohio, and he would begin learning the songs and adding his style and flavor to the drums while using Bob”s rough drum beats as a template. This was a much easier process because it allowed us time to really fine tune the songs and get to know them before we even got into the studio. We think this really allowed us to write possible the best album of our careers, and it is something we are looking forward to the next time around as well.
You are the one behind the lyrics, aren’t you? I think you haven’t gotten into a great relationship with christianity and the christians, you keep whipping them, but in a cultured, civilized way. Seems you will still have some themes for upcoming songs!
For the first few albums I handled most of the lyrics, but since the „Unholy Cult” album, Bob has had a huge input into the lyrical side of Immolation which I think has helped me diversify and become a better writer as well. I really enjoy his input and ideas as well as his help in expanding our lyrical horizons. I had a lot of inspiration for this album, and had a lot of really good, solid ideas when entering the studio. Most of my time in the studio was spent working on the lyrics with Bob and fine tuning my ideas with him. It was a great process that really gave us a tremendous end result. I am probably the most happy with the lyrics on this new record. Yes, there are a few songs specifically written about religion, but there are also many other songs that touch on other subjects as well, such as war, humanity”s obsession with power, and mankind”s path over the last century. It is a very dark album lyrically with an over all sense of hopelessness running throughout all the songs.
The recordings were done in Millbrook Sound studios, which is located in NY with the aid of Paul Orofino. What was it like? How many time did you have to do it?
Yes, once again, and for our sixth time, we returned to Millbrook Sound Studios with Paul Orofino handling all of the recording process for us. We love Paul as a friend and as part of the Immolation family, and we of course really love returning to his studio for the last 10 years. It is always a great experience for us and it allows us to completely focus on the recording process without feeling any stress or anxiety. It is a comfortable environment for us. The only difference this time around was the fact that we chose Zack Ohren to mix and master the record for us. We felt like we needed a change and wanted to try something different. Zack was certainly the right man for the job, and he definitely gave us one of the best sounding albums of our career, so it really was the best of both worlds.
What are the biggest similarities or differences compared ot Shadows In The Light?
The songs on this record are just more intense, more layered and more emotional. There is an abundance of feeling on this new record and there is a great dynamic on this album. All the songs on the new album are winners, each one stronger and catchier than the last one, and each very different from each other. It is for sure our darkest, bleakest album that has a suffocating sense of dread running throughout it. It has great epic parts, intensely fast parts and some of Immolations heaviest and catchiest moments ever. It is all there and it has our finest production to date allowing all the instruments to speak to the listener and work together. It doesn”t even compare to „Shadows…” Because it is truly in a league of its own!!!
Hearing the songs, yet again you cannot escape from the fact that you are pretty similair to Morbid Angel. Does this comparison annoy you, or do you find it pleasing, or you just got used to it already?
We are nothing like Morbid Angel and never have been. With all due respect, we love Morbid Angel and have been fans since the early days, but no one today would even dare make that comparison because they know there is no validity to the comparison. If you have honestly listened to the new album, or any of our past albums, this would be very clear, so I really don”t know who would make such a comparison. The songs are written very differently, Bobs lead style is totally different from Trey”s style, and our songs are dense and layered and have a totally different feel, creating a feeling that is unlike anything else out there, while Morbid Angel has a different sound and style all together. We have two totally different styles, different approaches and different ways of creating our versions of Death Metal. Its like back in the mid 1980″s when ignorant critics would compare Possessed with Slayer, saying they were trying to be like Slayer in every way. This was a ridiculous comparison because it never took a genius to come to the conclusion that they sound nothing alike and are both doing something totally different musically. The comparison between us and Morbid Angel, as flattering as it may be, is really the same as the Slayer/Possessed comparison. It only made sense to people who had no clue what this music was about and had no other way of identifying with us other than trying to link us somehow with something more familiar to them, via Morbid Angel. I have not heard this comparison in many, many years, and really don”t see the need to make it now when we have for 22 years continually released albums unique and different from any other band out there, including Morbid Angel. Please enlighten me if you can, but I don”t see any similarity other than the fact that we have both been around since the beginning of the Death Metal movement and that we are part of the same genre of metal, and that is where it really ends. I am sure if you spoke to any of the guys in Morbid Angel, they would agree that we have very different approaches musically and would not think there are really any similarities.
What about touring? When are you going to get on the road with your new record?
We will start touring officially for the album the end of April with some European festival shows, then a full tour here in the US in support of Exodus, then back to Europe for the summer, then a full tour here in the US again in the fall, and a full headlining tour in Europe at the end of the year, and that is only this years schedule 🙂 hahaha.
I read a couple of weeks ago, when you were on tour with Nile and Krisiun that the bus driver of Nile got pissed off and left you int he middle of the desert. Since you have a license, you brought them to the location of the next concert. What happened exactly?
Nile”s driver got a 10 hour suspension for driving with an incorrect class of a commercial driver”s license, so since I had the correct class license to drive their bus, so I helped them out and drove their bus to the show we had in New Mexico. It worked out great, the driver didn”t lose his license, everyone made it to the show and we didn”t have to cancel, and it was fun just to see the looks on the Nile guys” faces when they realized I was driving their bus!!!
Are you playing often in Europe this year? Can we expect a concert in Hungary?
We hope to play in Hungary again for this album. We played in Budapest for the „Shadows…” album and had a great time. Hungary is always a great show for us, the people are always great and very friendly, and we seem to always make new fans each time we play there. So we look forward to it and can”t wait to return!!!!
Let’s go back in time a bit, Immolation was formed by the name Rigor Mortis in 1986, but you weren’t with them those days, do you know anything about their early demos?
I was good friends with Andrew, the singer/bass player of Rigor Mortis (NY) and the guy who started the band. They released a rehearsal demo entitled „Peace Through Tyranny” in 1986, and a 3 song official demo in 1987 entitled „Decomposed” and recorded one more track in late 1987 entitled „Warriors of Doom”. This was about all they did officially, and I joined to replace Andrew after he quit in February 1988, but we then immediately changed the name to Immolation and began writing new songs. This was the beginning of Immolation and the end of Rigor Mortis (NY). I saw all of their local shows back in 1987, and was at the very last Rigor Mortis (NY) show in December 1987.
What should we know about your past regarding music?
I have been into metal since I was about 13 years old. My first metal show was in 1984 and it was Dio for the „Last in Line” album. I grew up listening to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Black Sabbath and gradually my tastes got heavier when I discovered Slayer, Venom, Mercyful Fate, Metallica and the more extreme acts. I also enjoy many other types of music as well as metal, such as Jazz, blues, classic rock and anything that speaks to me!!!
Rigor Mortis popped up with 2nd generation bands like Ripping Corpse, Revenant, Caligula, Deathrash, etc. how familiar were you with the NY underground? The given healthy underground got split into two halves, metal and hardcore, didn’t it?
Yes, I was familiar with all of these bands and knew all of them and played shows with most of them back in the late 1980″s. We lived and breathed the metal underground back then, especially being from NY, you were familiar with many of the great NY bands at that time. Bands like Carnivore, Bloodfeast, New Jersey”s Whiplash and Blessed Death were all killer NY/NJ bands at the time as well. It was a great scene, and the hardcore scene was very separate from the metal scene back in those days. The two crowds never really mixed well, and when they did, it was always a disaster leading to many fights and a shitty show for everyone involved.
You are forming the core of the band with Robert Vigna, you two have been with the band since the beginnings, have you ever thought of giving up Immolation? Have you ever thought that you were going to be with the band for 24 years, still touring, releasing records, giving interviews?
No, it was never our intention to do it this long; it just kind of happened and evolved into this unstoppable force. We are very fortunate and very lucky to still be here, to still be relevant, and to still be able to write and record records and tour all over the world for them. Our only motivation in the beginning was to create heavy dark music, and play some local shows for our friends who were into similar music. It was something we never though would turn into a world wide phenomenon and certainly never though we would be part of anything so widespread for over 20 years. At no point during that time did we ever consider giving up or trying something different because we loved doing what we did, and felt Immolation had a lot of untapped potential. We are happy to still be here and still have a lot of good years left in us!!!
What is keeping you motivated and focused?
Our love for the music and our complete enjoyment of the entire ride so far (writing, recording, touring, traveling, meeting fans all over the world, etc.) is what keeps us going. It is still a passion for us and something we enjoy doing simply for the pleasure of it.
