Üdvözlöm a csapatot Magyarországról! Nagy örömömre szolgál, hogy interjút készíthetek veletek. Most jelenleg itt elég zord idő van, felétek is hideg van? Mivel töltitek mostanában az időtöket?
Hello Kronos Mortus! Szerintetek nálatok hideg van?! Rohadt -16 C fok van Stockholmban! Azt hittem munkába menet halálra fagyok. Mindezen felül ma van a téli napforduló Svédországban, ami azt jelenti, hogy ez lesz az év leghosszabb éjszakája. Más szóval, 24 órányi hideg és sötétség vár ránk. Szerintem ez elég black metal, haha.
A Metal Blade Recordssal nagyon erőssé vált a csapatotok azt hiszem. Ennek legjobb bizonyítéka a vadonatúj „Death Domination” című album. Hadd gratuláljak!
Ezer köszönet. A Death Domination az eddigi legjobb albumunk. Brutálisan őszinte és sok embernek tetszik ez az őszinteség.
Bevallom, nem voltam nagy rajongója az Imipousnak, de a mostani albumon szereplő 10 dal maximálisan meggyőzött. Hogyan kezdtetek neki a felvételeknek? Milyen elhatározásra jutottatok a „Holy Murder Masquerade” lemez után?
A Holy Murder Masquerade kiadása után az volt a terv, hogy 2007/08-ra gyorsan kiadunk egy újat. Elkezdtünk beszélni a „Numbers”-ről a magazinokban. Aztán meggondoltuk magunkat, nem gondoltuk helyesnek, hogy kiadunk egy olyan albumot, amin olyan keveset tudtunk csak dolgozni, így a „Numbers”-t félretettük. Aztán, mikor összeraktuk az első új számot, véglegesen is elvetettük a „Numbers”-t. Nem okozott ez gondot. A Death Domination-t 2008 őszén kezdtük el írni és 2009 tavaszára/nyarára készültünk el vele. Az egészet a Valle stúdiójában írtuk, a Studio Deadline-ban. Miután végeztünk az írással, csak bevittük a hangszereket és felvettük az albumot.
A dalok szövegei is kicsit megváltoztak. Mit mondanál erről?
Igen, több jelentést akartunk beleszőni a dalszövegekbe. A kitalált dalszövegek elég általánosnak mondhatók a Death Metal-ban, de mi a saját dalszövegeinket sokkal személyesebbé akartuk tenni. Így aztán azon kaptuk magunkat, hogy egy csomó olyan dologról írtunk, amik érdekelnek és véleményünk van róluk. Matin és Vallace is írtak a dalszövegekhez, ami nagyban segítette Martin munkáját.
Abszolút egy dühös albumról beszélhetünk. Nagyon ütnek a számok és brutál az egész. Azt hiszem a lemez hallgatása közben mindenki, úgy fogja érezni magát, hogy teljesen elpusztít mindent. Hogyan is szól az új svéd brutál receptetek:)?
Az album készítése során egyszer sem álltunk le gondolkodni. Mindent szívből írtunk. A gyorsaság, energia és az őszinteség teszi brutálissá az albumot. Nem szabad eladásokban gondolkodni.
15 év telt el megalakulásotok óta. Szerintetek már a karrieretek csúcsán vagytok? Mennyire fontos számotokra a kiadói promóció? Hogyan értékeled a Metal Blade eddigi munkáját?
Biztosan mondhatom, karrierünk csúcsán vagyunk. A banda jobb, mint valaha, a zene is jobb, mint valaha, úgy érezzük, semmi sem állíthat meg minket. A Metal Blade nagyon fontos nekünk. Legyen az interjú vagy koncert, mindenben sokat segítenek. Teljesen profik és nélkülük sosem jutottunk volna el idáig.
Egy kitűnő vendégvokalistát is hallhatunk a „Death Domination”-on, méghozzá Johan Lindstrand, akinek a neve sokak számára ismerős lehet (The Crown, One Man Army). Hogyan került ő a képbe? Miért tartottátok jó ötletnek?
Johan egy régi barátunk. Nagyszerű fickó és évek óta ismerjük. Mindig is segítettünk egymásnak, dobolt az Impious egy demoján, még bőven az előtt, hogy én a bandába kerültem volna, Valle segített neki írni, felvenni és koncertezni a One Man Army-val. Így, mikor vendégvokalistában gondolkodtunk Johan volt az első, aki eszünkbe jutott. Nagyszerű munkát végzett, még néhány sort is írt a közreműködésről a Myspace-ünkön. Nézzétek meg.
A 2010-es évben várható turnésorozat, és fesztiválokon való részvétel? Szerinted növekedni fog az Impious rajongótábora?
Még semmi sincs lefixálva, de 2010 próbálunk annyit turnézni, amennyit csak lehet. A fesztiválok mindig nagyszerűek, remélem, játszunk majd néhány nyári fesztiválon. Ha növelni akarod a rajongói bázisod, két dolgot kell tenned, gyilkos anyagot írni és turnézni, ez a célunk.
A borítóról is essen néhány szó. A brazil Vasco Marcello nagyszerű munkát végzett. Felvázoltátok a gondolataitokat és egy ilyen művet készített, vagy hogyan is alakult ki a borító?
Úgy van, a borító hihetetlen jó lett. Beszélgettünk különböző ötletekről, amit vázlat formájában mutatott be. A vázlatok közt nem volt egy sem, amire mi gondoltunk, de nagyon jók voltak. Így hagytuk az ötletünket és az övét választottuk. Nagyszerűen illett a zenéhez, a dalszöveghez és az album címéhez. A végeredmény kicsit sem hasonlít az eredeti designra, de szerintem nagyszerűen néz ki és teljesen elégedettek vagyunk vele.
Az új logótokat is ő készítette? Miért is változtattátok meg?
Nem, a Death Domination logot egy amerikai művész Justin Kamerer (AngryBlue) készítette. Készített egy poló designt a logóval néhány éve és nagyon tetszett. Most, hogy tudjuk mennyivel brutálisabb az új album, tudtuk, hogy a logó nagyszerűen fog hozzá illeni. Volt néhány logónk az évek során ami, tudom, megzavarta az embereket, de most tényleg úgy érezzük, ez a jó logó. Még egyszer nem cseréljük le.

Greetings from Hungary! It’s an honor to make an interview with you guys. It’s really cold here, how about in your neighbourhood? What are you doing nowadays?
Hello Kronos Mortus! You think it’s cold where you live?! It’s freakin’ 16 degrees minus Celsius in Stockholm today! I thought I was gonna freeze to death on my way to work. On top of that, today there’s the winter solstice in Sweden, which means the longest night of the year. In other words, we’re looking forward to 24 hours of nothing but cold and darkness. That’s pretty Black Metal I think haha.
You became a very strong band since you signed with Metal Blade. Death Domination gives a proof of that.Let me congratulate!
Thanks a million. Death Domination is for sure our most definable album to date. It’s brutally honest and a lot of people seem to catch on to the sincerity of the album.
I admit I wasn’t a big fan of Impious, but the ten new song convinced me. How did you prepare for the recording? What was the plan after Holy Murder Masquerade?
After we released Holy Murder Masquerade the plan was to quickly write and record a new album to be released in 2007/08. We started telling magazines about our new idea, the album „Numbers”. But after a while we didn’t feel comfortable with putting out new music that we hadn’t had the time to work on as much as we wanted, so the idea of „Numbers” was put aside. And when we started getting the first new songs together, we threw the idea of „Numbers” away completely.
When we had let go of that idea we had no problem whatsoever with writing new songs. We started writing Death Domination during the fall of 2008 and the whole album was done by spring/summer of 2009. We wrote the whole album in the rehearsal space and at Valle’s studio, Studio Deadline. When we were done with writing it, we simply moved our instruments in there and recorded the album.
The topics of the lyrics changed a bit. What can you tell me about that?
Yeah we felt that we wanted our lyrics to have more meaning to them. Fictional lyrics are pretty much standard in Death Metal but we wanted to make the lyrics more personal. So we ended up writing a whole lot about stuff that we care for and are opinionated about. Martin and Valle co-wrote almost every lyric which really helped Martin to get a feeling for the songs.
Death Domination is a truly angry album. I think everybody will feel when listen to tha album that it will destroy everything. What is your receipe for brutality?:)
We didn’t stop to think one single time during the making of this album. We just wrote everything from the heart without taking anything in consideration. Speed, energy and honesty are what make an album brutal. Stop thinking about sales numbers and airplay, never hold yourself back.
Fifteen years passed since the formation of the band. In your opinion are you on the top of your career? How important is for you the promotion by your label? How would you grade Metal Blade’s work so far?
I would most definitely say we’re on top of our career. The band is better than ever, the music is better than ever, we’re on top of our game right now and we feel like nothing can stop us. Metal Blade is very important to us. They’re helping us out with everything possible whether it may be interviews or tours. They are total pro’s and we couldn’t have come this far without them.
There’s a great guest vocalist on Death Domination, Johan Lindstrand. How did you came up with the idea to invite him? Why did you think it was a good idea?
Johan is an old friend of ours. He’s a great guy and we’ve known him for years. We’ve always helped each other out, he played the drums on a demo for Impious long before I was even in the band, and Valle helped him write, record and do some shows with One Man Army. So when we started thinking about guest vocalists for the new album Johan was probably the first guy who came to mind. We asked him to join us for a song and he was totally into the idea. He did a great job and he even wrote a few lines about his contribution for our MySpace. Go check it out.
Are you going on tour in 2010? Will you do festival gigs? What do you think, will the fan base of Impious grow?
There is nothing set in stone just yet, but we will definitely tour as much as we possibly can in 2010. Festivals are always a lot of fun so I truly wish there will be a few festival gigs this summer. If you want your fanbase to grow there’s only two things to do, write killer material and tour, and that’s what we’re aiming for.
Vasco Marcello did a great job with the album’s cover. Did you share your ideas with him or he just came up with it?
Absolutely, the cover is awesome. We talked for a while about different ideas before he presented a rough sketch. The sketch was nothing like we had in mind, but it looked really, really good. So we skipped our idea and went with his. It was a perfect fit with the music, the lyrics and the album title. We worked on that for a couple of months and both Marcelo and us in the band came with ideas. The end result looks nothing like the original design but it I think it looks great and we are extremely happy with it.
Did he do your new logó too? Why did you change it?
No, the logo we use on Death Domination was created by the American artist Justin Kamerer a.k.a. AngryBlue. He did a t-shirt design for us with that particular logo on it a couple of years ago, and we really, really liked it. So when we started writing Death Domination and felt that our music had become so much more brutal, we knew that his logo would fit us just perfect. We’ve gone through a couple of logos during the years, and I know this has confused a lot of people. But this time we really feel that the logo is right. We will not change it again.
