In Faith Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

A kérdésekre Pete Godfrey válaszolt.

Először is gratulálok a There’s a Storm Coming albumhoz!

A fordulópontot a tavalyi, 2013-as Firefest himnusza, a Church of Rock an’ Roll jelentette. Onnan kezdve tudtuk, hogy lemezt kell készítenünk. Ez lett a There’s a Storm Coming.

Kipróbáltuk ennek jó pár változatát: No Faith stb. Végül eljutottunk az „In Faith”-hez.

Tony is ír másoknak, úgyhogy pillanatnyilag mindhárman elég elfoglaltak vagyunk.

Tony a Vaughn zenekarral is dolgozott. Innen az ismeretség a Tyketto gitáros Brooke St. James-szel, aki a Where I Wanna Be nótában szólózik?

Tony a Vaughn időkből ismeri Brooke-ot.
Eljött Manchesterbe Tony barátja, Pat Heath is. Fantasztikus zenész! A Radio és a Learn to Fly nótákban szólózik, utóbbi a There’s a Storm Coming japán verzióján hallható.

Mi a Church of Rock an’ Roll nóta története?

Nekilendültünk és elküldtük neki a Church of Church of Rock an’ Roll demóját, amely megtetszett neki.

Jó idők járnak a dallamos rock (AOR, hard rock stb.) zenére mostanában?

Úgy látom, 2014 jó év volt a stílus számára. Megjelent néhány igen erős album, ami a javára válik a műfajnak.

Az album japán verzióján ott a Learn to fly nóta, benne Pat Heath szólójával, aki a Radioban is játszik. A japán változatra feldolgoztuk a Don’t hold your Breath-et is Nicole Scherzingertől.

Ami más bandákat illet, a Harem Scarem is óriási volna, őket mindannyian kedveljük.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Answered by Pete Godfrey.

First of all, congratulations on the “There’s A Storm Coming” album. Is In Faith a band you’ve planned on forming for long or a relatively new idea that has emerged a few years ago?

Hi and thank you!
In Faith came about through Tony Marshall and myself getting together to write songs, the original ’plan’ was simply to write and record some tracks and then sell them to other artists, somewhere along the line, we realised we had to keep the songs and release an album, the turning point was the Firefest anthem last year, 2013, Church of Rock an Roll, from that point we knew we had to make an album that became There’s a Storm Coming.

Pete Newdeck and Tony Marshall are both well-known musicians of the British rock scene but what about you? In which bands did you sing before? Or were you rather active as songwriter in the past?

I’ve sung in bands that played clubs and pubs for years, almost always cover bands. I stopped around 1998, we had tried at various times to get record deals and came close on different occasions. Eventually I gave it up and it wasn’t until about three years ago when I was asked by chance to write a few songs for some people I knew, that I got the bug again. Within a few months I realised I wanted to do the music I loved, I got back in touch with Tony Marshall and things moved on from there pretty quickly

Who came up with the name „In Faith”?

When we were asked to do the song for Firefest X, we presented Church of Rock an Roll to Kieran and he came back with ’so what are you guys called?” We came up with lots of different names but none which all three of us liked,
It may have been Pete Newdeck who came up with ’Faith’ , we then tried variations like No Faith and so on, finally we hit on In Faith and no one hated it so it stuck. Its odd because even though there was never any real intention to find a meaningful name, it kind of represents us as a band in that we are doing something that we really believe in, not because its in fashion or massively lucrative, but because we love this style of music, we do it in faith!

Pete Newdeck has played several U.K. shows with Newman recently. Are there any other bands or projects in which you’re actively involved?

Pete Newdeck does a lot of mixing and producing for other bands, he has his own band Tainted Nation who are currently working on their second album. He has also sung backing vocals recently on a soon to be released album by quite a major band!
I’m working on a few different projects, one with Tony Marshall. Tony and myself are interested in writing together for other artists, Tony has also been writing for different people, so its all pretty busy musically for the three of us at the moment.

Tony’s worked with the band Vaughn. Is this how you’ve got to know Tyketto guitarist Brooke St. James and got him playing a solo in Where I Wanna Be?

Tony knows Brooke from the Vaughn days, we talked about guest appearances on the album, Tony contacted Brooke and he agreed to do it. There is an extended version of that song, that hopefully will make it out at some point, with Brooke playing a longer solo.
We also asked Chris Green to guest on a track called Addicted, he plays an absolute blinding solo on that one and Tonys mate Pat Heath who is an unbelievable player came up to Manchester to record solos for Radio and Learn to Fly which is on the Japanese version of There’s a Storm Coming.
We can’t thank these guys enough for helping us out!

And how did you get in touch with Harry Hess who did the mastering of the album?

Harry Hess was the ‘goto’ man, Kieran Dargan suggested him, Tony Marshall wanted to use Harry, Myself and Pete Newdeck both love Harem Scarem and Harry Hess’ work in general, we contacted him, he agreed to do it and did a brilliant job over and above what we could have expected.

One of my personal favorites, “Bitter End” came out pretty heavy which was quite a surprise to me. What did inspire you to write that song?

Tony came up with all the backing for Bitter End, I wrote the melody and lyrics. The song was originally called Say my name but we were never really happy with the chorus. We tried about five different choruses and then finally I asked Pete Newdeck if he had any ideas, just to try a different angle, he came back with Bitter End and that was the result

What’s the story of the song “Church Of Rock N’Roll”? Was in meant to be the anthem for Firefest and written specifically for that purpose? Too bad it seems you won’t be able to play Firefest anymore since this year’s edition was the Final Fling.

Tony is (or was) the Production Manager for Firefest, we were working on song ideas at his home studio when Keiran Dargan skyped him, during the conversation we talked about writing songs and he said he wanted an anthem for Firefest X, we had a go and sent him a demo of Church of Rock an Roll which he loved. Church was the first song that all three of the band were involved with, Tony didn’t really want to put it on the album, but I wanted it on, just because of it being the original In Faith track really.
We would have loved to have been able to play a Firefest as In Faith, of course Tony and Pete Newdeck have both played there, I worked as part of the crew for the last two years and had an absolutely amazing time with everyone, maybe one day it will return and we will definitely put our names forward to be on the bill.

Even though Firefest has called it a day this year, Frontiers Records have been doing their own festival and there’s another melodic rock fest as well (Vasby Rock in Sweden). In the U.K. Fireworks Magazine is a great driving force behind the genre and there was a festival named HRH AOR2 Festival in Wales… The way you see it, is melodic rock (AOR, hard rock etc.) thriving these days?

2014 seems to have been a good year for the genre, there have been some really strong albums released which can only help. With luck 2015 will continue that trend and if the bands are quality, then hopefully more people will give them a listen. I do think that this style of music is overlooked a little nowadays, we are doing our best to try and change it!

Are there any songs that didn’t make it to “There’s A Storm Coming” or any unfinished ideas that will probably grow to songs for the next In Faith record?

There is a bonus track on the Japanese version of the album called ’Learn to fly’, it has a solo by Pat Heath who played on ’Radio’. Also on the Japanese album, we did a cover of Don’t hold your Breath by Nicole Scherzinger.
We did demo to quite a high standard a track called ’Broken’ that will most likely get used in some capacity, but we are constantly coming up with new ideas and the more we write the more we tend to sound like ’In Faith’ which is obviously where we want to be musically.

Do you have any tour plans? Which bands would be the ideal touring partners for you?

Ha Ha, interesting you ask that, we are looking at going out and playing, probably around March, April next year. We are talking to Angels or Kings who also released their debut album this last October, about going out on a mini tour together which would be great.
As far as other bands, Harem Scarem who everybody seems to liken us to, would be great but any of the really big bands wouldn’t be turned down if they offered us a tour!
