King Of Asgard Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

A kérdésekre Jonas Albrektsson válaszolt.

Sziasztok! Hälsningar Från Ungern! Üdvözlet Magyarországról! Jó kis headbangerelésre gerjesztő lemezt készítettetek, kivéve talán a Fi’mbulvintr című dalt, az túl lírai hozzá! 😀 Gratulálok, erős debütálás! Vannak visszajelzések, másoknak, hogy tetszett a zenétek?

Hej!

Bemutatnád a csapatot? Kik alkotják? Milyen céloktól vezérelve jöttetek össze? Miként született meg a csapat?

Rendben, A King Of Asgard-ot én, Karl Backman, hoztam létre 2008-ban. Ezután elindultak a dolgok, jött a Metal Blade szerződés, felvettük a debüt albumot, stb.

Ilyen pörgős arrafelé a metal élet?

Néhány bandát megemlítek: Dawn, Mithotyn, Thy Primordial, Falconer, Indungeon, Choir of Vengeance, Niden Div. 187 stb… Most viszont minden erőnkkel a King of Asgardra koncentrálunk, előre tekintünk.

A trió felállás marad?

Nézzük a lemezt! Elsőre ami feltűnő, a borítófestmény. Kinek a munkája? Szabad kezet kapott a művész?

Ő a legjobb.

A lemezcím, Fi’mbulvintr, a ragnarök előtti nagy tél. Az egész lemez a skandináv mitológiavilágot járja körül? Születtek más témájú dalok is? Van valami összefüggés közöttük?

Nos, ez nem egy koncept album. Mind a 11 szám egyéni, megvan a saját történetük.

Jól látom, a vikingek másodszorra is meghódítják a világot?:)

Mennyit tett hozzá a zenétekhez, hangzásotokhoz?

Rögtön megértette, mit akarunk elérni ezzel a felvétellel.

Pár nóta már szerepelt a Prince of Märings demótokon.

Rengeteg órát próbáltunk mire a számok elérték a végleges alakjukat. Sok mindent kipróbálunk dalszerzés közben, próbáljuk a dalokat végleges formájukba önteni, mielőtt stúdióba vonulunk.

Kiknek a társaságában fogtok fellépni?

KoA

Answered by Jonas Albrektsson.

Hi there! Hälsningar Från Ungern! Greetings from Hungary! What a pretty headbanging album you”ve made, except the song Fi’mbulvintr, that”s a bit too lyrical for that.:) So congratulations, nice debut! What kind of feedbacks do you have?

Hej! Hi there and thanks for those flattering words! As for now with just a couple of weeks with the album out the response has been really great and well above average in reviews I’ve seen so far. The reception has been far more pleasant than we ever could have imagined. We knew we’ve recorded a really good debut for sure but never thought people should understand what we wanted to achieve with it and that they should únderstand this much of how we thought while we wrote and recorded it. So, it’s been great for sure, we could hardly had a warmer welcome as the newcomers we are with nearly nothing released before. Will be very interesting to follow this and see what the future hold in store. Thanks to all that’s supporing us!

Could you please introduce us the band? Who are the members? What were your aims while uniting? How was the band formed?

Okay, King Of Asgard was brought to life in 2008 by me, Karl Beckman, after dissolving my musical projects at the time. KoA started with me teaming up with my long time absent fellow worker, Karsten Larsson, who once was my accomplice in the now long defunct vikinghorde Mithotyn. After getting back together after years apart, our decision was made to go back to our roots both musically as well as we choosed to head for our Norse heritage in lyrical approach. This being something I really longed for. Later on a bunch of songs were written and in January 2009 we entered Lotang Studio for the recording of the debut demo, the seven tracker, „Prince of Märings”. In late 2009 Jonas Albrektsson (my long time friend) earlier in Thy Primordial joined the King of Asgard on bass and the line-up was strengthen even further. From there on, things started moving, with the Metal Blade deal, debut album recorded etc. The aim of King of Asgard was basically going back to our very roots really, making the music we’re strongly bond to and longed for to some extent. That’s in short the case of KoA and on the story goes. Last but not least we welcomed our second guitarist being Lars Tängmark some two week ago. So we’re a bunch of old friends actually that got back together and made a helluva great new band.

I made some research on the web and realized that you’ve played in a bunch of bands, what is more, there are bands that at least two of you have played in. Is metal life such busy out there?

Well I understand that people are asking about this ’cause there are pretty many bands we’ve been in during the years. But also consider we’ve all been active in this for more or less twenty years so we’ve had the time to do it all the way. We live in a quite small town and there’s not much more to do than to catch up with the like-minded and shit like this happen you know. We’re a small number of devoted extreme metalers that has created, say, a lot of bands and records during pretty many years. If to name drop a few; Dawn, Mithotyn, Thy Primordial, Falconer, Indungeon, Choir of Vengeance, Niden Div. 187 etc… and the list goes on. But for now, full prio on King of Asgard, heading forward. Lets aim the future rather than the past!

Will you keep playing in a trio? Have you ever thought about recruiting another guitarist?

Did you sense this one, haha? No we will not stay a three piece! Just as we speak we’ve just recruited a second guitarist, Lars Tängmark, a very talented musician being know for i.e. handling the bass in Dawn during some years in the 90’ies. So it’s an old time friend of the band and he’s been playing together with Karsten for many years. It was the perfect choise.

Let’s see the new album. The first eye-catching thing is the cover art. Whose picture is it? Was the artist granted a free hand? Did you want a tale-like picture on purpose? Does it depict a story as well?

Ola Larsson is the artist behind it. When the question came up who’s gonna make the cover art, Jonas suggested Ola to me whom is a long time friend of the band and have made several covers for i.e.Thy Primordial and Indungeon where Jonas and I used to play. We were extremely picky on how and what the cover would look like and we wanted it to depict the title Fi’mbulvintr (fimbul winter) to some extent. We gave him guidelines to start from as we had in mind what we wanted it to be like and from there on we worked. Not really giving him free hands but sure he made much impression with his ideas as well. He sent us samples all the way and we just told him what to change and what to keep until all of us were satisfied and the work was done. Approxamately it took some three to four months due to that he was pretty busy at the moment and we were, as I said, pretty picky. As everyone can se he is an extremely talanted artist and we’re so happy that he made this for us with such a splendid result. We wanted it kind of back to the roots, that maybe explains the „tale-like” look. You know all the great cover art presented on the death/black metal albums etc. in the early 90ies and so forth, it’s awesome at most references for sure. Maybe a stupid move, but hey, what a final result. We’re so satisfied with it and the response upon it is great! Check him out, he’s the best.

The album title Fi’mbulvintr is the rigorous winter before ragnarök. Does the whole album deal with Scandinavian legends? Are there any songs with other topics? Is there a link between the songs?

Well, this is not a conceptual album. All eleven songs are individual and has its own story to tell. „Fi’mbulvintr” was chosen a title because we felt it fit the atmospere of the whole album and it is also the title of the instrumental outro on the album. The lyrics on the album comes mainly in ancestral portraits, norse mythology, viking sagas and myths with the reflection of our personal ideals and touch, not being strict or limited. We want to have an open way to go and not restrict ourselfs with just doing specific type of lyrics. Of course, still capturing the above mentioned lyrical approach. Some lyrics are based on written sagas and myths from the Norse mythology, the religion of our forefathers and the actual atmosphere of the time.

It seems like Scandinavian mythology conquers the whole globe since there are a lot of bands who are interested in it, even though some live in the south. Considering this, Scandinavian viking bands are carrying out a proselytizer work. Do I get it right, that vikings are conquering the world for the second time?

Haha, never had a thought of that really. Sure you could have a point there but I don’t think we’re even near the crusades of our forefathers. I’m not very familier with the current „viking” metal scene to be honest more than the very well known acts and such. I don’t know much about bands conquering the world with viking mythology either, but hey if so, it’s just fine with me and King of Asgard could help carrying the myths around, spreading the words of our heritage north. To answer your question, well, I don’t really know if the vikings are conquering the world for a second time. If not, lets start conquer, bit by bit, piece by piece!

Your producer was Andy La Rocque. How did you manage to find him? Was he a choice on purpose? Why did you choose him? What was the job like with him? How much did he add to your music and sounding?

We recorded the debut album at Sonic Train Studios in Varberg, Sweden, with engineer and co-producer Andy LaRocque, our first choice of studio really, where we spent two weeks in March 2010. It was a great stay and we worked very good together with Andy. He really understod what we wanted to achieve with this recording from the moment we told him. We used both a and b studios so that we could get the best out of our a little too short two weeks, so, sleeping and hang around wasn’t priority so to say. We worked hard and it gave some result. We are very satisfied with the final result, it sounds much like we pictured it to be. The production has a somewhat organic sound to it, simple and raw, yet allowing everything shine through and bring the production to its full justice. Me and Karsten worked with Andy earlier on so it was an easy choice as we knew pretty much what to expect in terms of working with him although this is a entirely new project. So, we could hardly done this any better on these terms. We told him right away what we wanted with this and it’s very much that way as well as Andy has worked and come through with some really good additions. We’re proud of it!

Some of your songs appeared on your demo Prince of Märings. Are the other songs results of a long composing procedure? Or maybe they were born in the studio?

All song were finished before entering the studio. Of course there are parts that has been changed or put to it while recording. So, it’s the result of many hours in the rehearsal place to it’s full. We’re trying out much material and twist and turn while composing so that the song should be as finished as possilble while finally hitting the studio. It makes things so much easier. It’s more the vocal tracks and some melodies etc. that are being done while in the studio, the rest is more or less put on tape right away.

A pretty dynamic video appeared with your song Einhärjar. What was the reason for choosing this composition? What was the filming like? Who was that person who became visible a few times in the clip? Was he from the film The Descent? 🙂

This song was chosen because we feel it’s the one representing us as a band the most and it appeals to a wide audience. The video was recorded in July 2010 and was directed by Richard Moneus who the driving force behind a production company called 1897. It was shot in an old dirty barn (Karsten’s) at a location just outside where we live and we spent what felt like ages in the long time kept dusty loft. It was a hell of a hard work for both parts, being us and Richard, doing our very best to get this as good as it actually did. Richard took care of the hard work to cut, edit and piece it all together to the fantastic result it became. We just gave him some guidelines to work on and from there on he worked. We’re very proud of it and it was so worth the struggle, sweat and blood… We owe a great debt of gratitude to mister Moneus for making this one possible! Haha, the person you refering to is none other than me, Karl Beckman, crawling in dirt hours past midnight. This is a creature that is visualizing some parts in the lyric „Einhärjar”, not very clearly but rather effective and mysterious. Great acting isn’t it!?

Do you have any plans concerning a tour? Who will you play with? Where will you perform? Can you be expected in the vicinity of Hungary?

As a matter of fact we made our live debut a cople of weekends (28/8) at a release party we held here in our home town. It was a blast and from what I gather from the response a success. So there will be concerts for sure but I’m not sure about long tours really. Festivals and sorted ones for sure, guess like next year could be the time to get it done. Nothing is booked at the moment so no bands revealed obviously. We have a gig coming in Germany in December which is the only one for now. So, send us your offers and we’ll consider them! Hopefully, Hungary will be one of them… let’s see where this album takes us. A bit early to say!

Thank you very much indeed for answering my questions. I wish you success and concerts with thrilling atmosphere!

Ok, Thanks a lot for showing your interest in KoA, it strengthen us for sure! /KoA
