Több, mint fél évtizede hallhattak utoljára új dalokat a Lyfthrasyr szimpatizánsok, tavaly év vége előtt azonban végéhez ért a vegetatív állapot és nagyközönség elé került a csapat harmadik nagylemeze „The Engineered Flesh” címmel. Az összkép most színesebb, mint bármikor korábban, ezzel arányosan pedig minőségileg is új szintre léptek a német transzhumanisták. Az aktualitások kapcsán a banda motorja, Aggreash válaszolt a kérdésekre:
Hail Lyfthrasyr, elismerésem a friss munkáért! Hogy érzitek magatokat jelenleg? Hiányzik a lemez körülötti sürgés-forgás vagy jó érzés végre szusszanni egyet és élvezni a visszajelzéseket?
Köszönjük a dícséretet, én csakugyan élvezem most a szünetet. Nem csak egy új albumot rögzítettünk, de ezzel egyidőben elkészítettük a zenekar első live DVD-jét is, ami a „The Engineered Flesh” speciális kiadásában került megjelenésre. A vélemények ezidáig nagyszerűek, úgyhogy tényleg jó passzban vagyunk mostanában.
Érdekes nevet választottatok a bandának. Mit jelent a Lyfthrasyr?
Az északi mitológiában Lifthrasir volt az apokalipszis, a Ragnarök egyik túlélője. A névválasztásunk mögötti elképzelés egyrészt a gyökereinkre hivatott rámutatni, az északi black metal-ra, másrészt pedig hangsúlyozni szerettük volna vele valami új kezdetét. A két „i”-t aztán kicseréltük „y”-ra, hogy egyedivé tegyük a nevet, és hogy a Lyfthrasyr csak és kizárólag a zenekarhoz kapcsolódjon, ne pedig az északi mitológiához.
Hosszú idő eltelt már a „The Recent Foresight” óta. Miért tartott hat évig elkészíteni a folytatást? Mi minden történt veletek ebben az időszakban?
Nem akartam addig megjelentetni az új albumot, míg nem voltam maradéktalanul megelégedve a dalokkal és a hangzással. Mivel nem tartom magam profi zenésznek és ezen kívül számos más, magán jellegű elfoglaltságom is volt, ennyi időbe telt mindent tökéletesíteni. Nem volt könnyű számomra szabad heteket találni rá, hogy folyamatosan a friss szerzeményeken tudjak dolgozni, ahhoz viszont idő és tiszta fej kell, hogy az ember kreatív tudjon lenni, emellett pedig a DVD munkálatai is sok időt felemésztettek. Időközben a gitárosunk, Insorior is elhagyta a zenekart, mert a saját projectjére, a Tervingi-re szeretett volna koncentrálni. Sajnálom, hogy így alakult, mert tíz éven keresztül dolgoztunk közösen a Lyfthrasyr-on és határozottan volt már némi befolyásunk a metal színtéren.
Hogy fogadták a rajongók a visszatéréseteket a hosszú szünet után?
Azok, akik tényleg nagyon vágytak már egy új lemezre, teljes eufóriában voltak a megjelenés után és mindnyájan úgy vélték, teljes mértékben megérte a várakozás. De sajnos, van egy olyan érzésem, hogy vannak páran, akik időközben megfeledkeztek rólunk. Ébresztő, emberek! Visszatértünk és jobbak vagyunk, mint valaha!
Mind zenei és ideológiai értelemben, mik voltak a fő hatásaid a „The Engineered Flesh” elkészítésekor?
A legnagyobb hatással rám mindigis a saját zenei ízlésem volt. A legutóbbi alkotó fázisban sok olyan bandát hallgattam, mint a The Prodigy, a Rammstein, a Turmion Kätilöt, a Machine Head vagy az Apoptygma Berzerk. Bárki, aki ismeri a felsoroltakat, megtalálja majd a jellegzetességeiket a dalaimban, vegyítve mindezt a Lyfthrasyr védjegyeivel.
Amennyire én látom, az eredmény több összetevőben is nagy fejlődést mutat. Te hogy érzed, miben fejlődtetek a legtöbbet?
Azt hiszem, a billentyűk használata elég egyedinek hat a black metal berkein belül. Az első két albumhoz képest ezúttal kevésbé szimfónikus a megközelítés, de az elektro és industrial beütés így is különlegessé teszi őket és úgy gondolom, összességében most a dalírási folyamat is sokkal érettebb volt, mint korábban. Sokat tanultam az elmúlt évek alatt, soha nem írtam még olyan fogós, ugyanakkor sokoldalú dalokat, mint ezen a lemezen.
A Technological Singularity és a Wisdom In The Loop egyértelműen az ipari metal egy könnyedebb, népszerűbb oldalát képviseli, ami elég új és szokatlan tőletek. Nekem, személy szerint működik a dolog, de nem túl kockázatos ez egy alapjában véve black metal bandától?
Igazából sohasem foglalkozom ilyesmivel, mert nem különösebben érdekel a black metal attitűd vagy úgy egyáltalán az általános gondolatrendszer. Az említett számok ezzel együtt megtartották a Lyfthrasyr hangzásvilágot, szóval azok, akik egy kicsit is nyitott szemléletűek és elfogadják a zenekar fejlődését, semmiképpen nem lesznek csalódottak.
Hogyan foglalnád össze az anyag tartalmi mondanivalóját?
A „The Engineered Flesh” egy konceptalbum a transzhumanizmusról. Az emberiség géntechnológia, nanotechnológia és robotika eljárásaival való mesterséges fejlesztését szerettem volna bemutatni. Amint képesek leszünk nagyobb mélységekben megérteni ezeket a technológiákat, új korszak kezdődik majd, ahol képesek leszünk befolyásolni a természet- és saját magunk sorsát is, oly módon, ahogy soha nem gondoltuk volna. Minden dal más témakört fed le ebből a koncepcióból, úgy mint például a „Preserved Identity” a krionikát (kísérleti technika, melynek lényege, hogy a halott testet konzerválják, azt remélve, hogy a jövőben lehetségessé válik a lefagyasztott ember újraélesztése – a szerk.), a „Mind Simulator” a személyiség- és karakterfejlődést, vagy a „Soul Transition Interface” a mesterséges lélek-beágyazást és átvezetést. Emelett a fantasztikus lehetőségek mellett, szintén beszélek a lehetséges mellékhatásokról (ld. „Life Overdose”), ami nyilvánvalóan előfordul a kutatások és a fejlesztések alatt.
Mit gondolsz, mi a legjobb dolog, illetve a legnagyobb probléma a modern kor és a fejlődő technológiában?
Véleményem szerint a legjobb dolog, ahogy világraszólóan megalkottuk a kapcsolattartást. Fontos dolgokat oszthatunk meg percek alatt világszerte, és az utazások időtartama is egyre rövidebb és rövidebb. Másrészről viszont, elárasztanak bennünket az információk és egyre nehezebb felismerni a ténylegesen lényeges, szükséges vagy kívánt információkat a teljes kommunikációs zűrzavar közepette.
Szeretnétek valaha elkészíteni az első hivatalos videoklipeteket?
Őszintén, én inkább a stúdiós munkálatokra fordítom a költségvetést, mintsem hogy klipet forgassunk. Minden a pénzről szól, egy videó minősége is általában arányosan növekszik a belefeccölt összeggel, márpedig én nem szeretnék egy olcsó vagy középkategóriás videót elkészíteni, amivel aztán végül valószínűleg mi magunk sem lennénk megelégedve.
Elég egyedien közelítitek meg a stílusokat. Tagjaként elfogad bennetek a black metal és/vagy az industrial közösség?
Azt mondanám, egyik sem. Habár, van egy nagy szürke folt a két extrémitás között, tele emberekkel, akik olyan bandákat hallgatnak, mint a The Kovenant, az Aborym, a Dødheimsgard, a Fear Factory vagy akár a Rammstein.
Mikor láthatunk benneteket újra a színpadon? Nem hiányzik a tömegek előtti előadás?
Néhány bulit már leszerveztünk az idei évre, de egyelőre még nem jelenthetjük be őket. Határozottan hiányoznak a fellépések, és nagyon várjuk már, hogy újra megmutathassuk magunkat a koncerteken vagy akár egy teljes turnén is a továbbiakban.
Mik az esélyeink Magyarországon vagy a környező országokban? Jártatok már nálunk korábban?
Igen, 2007-ben játszottunk Budapesten a Behemoth, a Kataklysm és az Aborted társaságában. Nem könnyű azonban időt szakítanunk rá, hogy belevágjunk egy nagyobb turnéba, mivel sajnos, komoly munkáink vannak. Szomorú ezt mondani, de nem valószínű, hogy a közeljövőben újra eljutunk Magyarországra – de sosem tudhatod.
Terveztek valamit változtatni az előadásmódon a múltban nyújtottakhoz képest?
Nem hiszem, a stílusunk és a korábbi alakításaink az új dalokhoz is remekül passzolnak. De talán bemutatunk majd pár új cuccot, hogy kihangsúlyozzuk az új lemez koncepcióját.
Inkább stúdió bandának tartod magatokat?
Abszolút. Szeretek turnézni és szívesen csinálnám gyakrabban, de ilyen időigényes munka mellett zenélni nagyon nehéz dolog. A stúdiós periódusokat sokkal könnyebb összehozni, hisz bármikor leülhetek dolgozni az otthoni cuccokkal, és valójában sokkal több erőfeszítést fektetek a stúdiós teljesítményembe, mint abba, hogy minél jobb és tapsztaltabb élő zenész legyek.
Most képzelj el egy fantázia show-t, ahol nincs pénz- vagy térbeli limit, bármit megvalósíthatsz, amiről valaha is álmodtál, akár a realitáson túlmenően is. Ebben az esetben, hogy nézne ki egy Lyfthrasyr buli?
Próbálnám lehetővé tenni, hogy a közönség ne csak vizuálisan és auditívan, de minden érzékével képes legyen megtapasztalni a zenénket. Saját maguk is felfedezhetnék a szövegeim minden részletét és éreznék a mondanivalóját. Le lennének fagyva a krionikus „Preserved Indentity” alatt, csatlakoztatnák magukat a „bölcsesség-géphez” a „Wisdom In The Loop”-nál, éreznék a vénájukon átáramló nanobotokat a „Technological Singularity” hallgatásakor vagy mozdulatlan halhatatlanságot és közelgő tébolyt tapasztalnának, mint amiről a „Life Overdose” beszél. Minden lemezünk minden dala egy külön történetet mesél el, fantasztikus volna, ha mindenkinek megadhatnánk az élményt, hogy főhősként élje meg a zenénket a fellépések alatt.
Végezetül, hogyan mutatnád be az új albumot azon olvasóinknak, akik sohasem hallottak még rólatok korábban?
Modern extrém metal, műfaji határok nélkül, nyílt szemléletű embereknek, akik friss és újító szándékú zenét keresnek.

It’s been more than a half decade, since the Lyfthrasyr supporters could hear a fresh material, but at the end of the last year, the coma finally has come to an end and „The Engineered Flesh” has presented as the third full-lenght of the band. The overall picture is much more colorful than ever before, and with this, the German transhumanists definitely took the quality on higher level. Related to topicalities, the band’s engine, Aggreash answered my questions:
Hail Lyfthrasyr, congrats for the fresh material! How are you guys feeling at the moment? Do you miss the hard working process with the record or it feels good to finally have a break and enjoy the feedbacks?
Thanks for the compliment, I really enjoy the break after such hard work. We not only recorded a new album but also produced our very first live DVD which is part of the special edition of the new album „The Engineered Flesh”. The feedback is great so far, se we do feel pretty good.
You’ve definitely choosen an interesting name for the band. What’s the meaning behind Lyfthrasyr?
“Lifthrasir” was one of two survivors of the apocalypse “Ragnarök” in Nordic mythology. The idea behind the name Lyfthrasyr is to point out the roots of our music (Nordic black metal) on the one hand and to emphasize the beginning of something new on the other hand. The two “i” have been replaces by “y” to make the name unique. Lyfthrasyr has to be linked to the band only and not to Nordic mythology.
It’s been a while since The Recent Foresight has appeared in the scene. Why did it take six years to create the new album? What happened with the band in this past period?
I did not want to release the new album before being totally satisfied with the songs and the sound. Since I’m not a professional musician and had a lot of private stuff to do, it took such a long time. It wasn’t easy for me to find some weeks to continuously work on the songs. However, you need time and a free mind in order to be creative. The production of the live DVD cost a lot of time, too. In the meantime, guitarist Insorior left the band. He wanted to concentrate more on his own project Tervingi. I’m sad about that since we have been working together in Lyfthrasyr for 10 years and definitely had some impact on the metal scene.
How did your fans welcome your comeback after the pause?
The people who really longed for the new album were pretty euphoric after the release and everybody said it was absolutely worth the long wait. But I guess that some people forgot about us in the meantime, unfortunately. Wake up, guys, we are back again and much better than ever before!
Both musically and in ideological meaning, what were your biggest influences to write „The Engineered Flesh” and make it sound like it does at the final product?
My biggest influence has always been my personal taste in music. During songwriting for „The Engineered Flesh” I listened a lot to bands such as The Prodigy, Rammstein, Turmion Kätilöt, Machine Head, or Apoptygma Berzerk. Everybody who knows these bands will find some of their attributes in my songs mixed together with the Lyfthrasyr’s trademarks.
As far as I see, the result shows great progression in several components. What do you think, in what did you evolve the most?
The keyboards are pretty unique in black metal, I think. They are less symphonic compared to the first two albums but the touch of electro and industrial music makes them become remarkable. But I also think the songwriting is much more mature now. I learned a lot during the years and never wrote such catchy but multifaceted songs before.
Technological Singularity and Wisdom In The Loop are clearly stands for a lighter, more popular side of industrial metal, which is quite fresh and unusual from you. Personally, it works for me, but isn’t it too risky from a black metal band?
Actually, I never really cared about that since I don’t really care about black metal attitude or ideology in general. The songs still sound like Lyfthrasyr, so people who are somehow open-minded and accept the band’s progress will definitely not be disappointed.
How would you sum-up the lyrical content of the tracklist?
„The Engineered Flesh” is a concept album about transhumanism. This is the artifical enhancement of humans by methods such as genetic engineering, nanotechnologies, or robotics. As soon as we are able to deeply understand these technologies, a new era will start where we are able to influence nature’s and our own destiny in a way we never expected. Each song covers a different topic of this concept such as cryonics [cryonics is the low-temperature preservation of humans who cannot be sustained by contemporary medicine, with the hope that healing and resuscitation may be possible in the future – the editor] („Preserved Identity”), personality and character improvement („Mind Simulator”), or man-made soul encapsulation and transition („Soul Transition Interface”). Besides these fantastic possibilities, I also discuss potential side effects („Life Overdose”) which obviously occur during research and development.
What do you think is the best thing and worst problem in the modern age and evolving technology?
The best thing in my opinion is how we managed to connect the world. Important information can be spread all around the world in minutes and travel times become shorter and shorter. On the other hand, we are flooded with information and it becomes more and more difficult to identify important, necessary, or desired information in between this information clutter.
Are you interested in making the first official videoclip for one of the new songs?
Well, I actually preferred spending our budget in the studio instead of producing a video. Everything is about money and the video quality usually increases steadily with the spent amount of money. I don’t want to produce a cheap or mid price video which may not satisfy our own expectations in the end.
Your approach to the style is quite unique. Does either the black metal or the industrial community accept you as part of it?
Neither I would say. However, there is a large gray area between these two extremes with people listening to bands such as The Kovenant, Aborym, Dødheimsgard, Fear Factory, or even Rammstein.
When will we be able to see you guys perform again? Don’t you miss the feeling of playing in front of a crowd?
Some gigs are already confirmed for 2014 but we can’t announce them, yet. We definitely miss the stage and are looking forward to playing concerts or maybe even a tour again soon.
How about our chances in Hungary or maybe in the nearby countries? Have you ever visited our place already?
In 2007 we played a concert in Budapest with Behemoth, Kataklysm, and Aborted. However, it is not easy for us to find the time to go on a big tour when having a serious job, unfortunately. I’m not sure if we can make it to play again in Hungary soon, sorry. But you never know.
Are you going to change anything in the live shows compared to the past (visual effects, overall look, attitude etc.)?
No, our style and show in the past fit pretty good to the new songs, too. Maybe we’ll introduce some new stuff emphasizing the new album’s concept.
Do you consider yourselves rather like a studio band than a touring one?
We’re a studio band. I really like touring and would like to do it much more often. But with a time-consuming job besides music, this is very difficult. The studio time is much easier to manage since I can work whenever I like in my home studio. And I personally put much more effort in my studio work than in my skills as live musician.
Now let’s imagine a fantasy show, where are no limits of money, space or even reality. You can do anything you ever dreamt about. In that case, how would a Lyfthrasyr show look like?
I would try to let the people not only experience our music visually and auditorily, but with all senses. They should be able to feel and discover all the topics in my lyrics by themselves. They get frozen during the cryonics song „Preserved Identity”, they plug themselves to the wisdom machine during „Wisdom In The Loop”, they feel nanobots flowing through their veins during „Technological Singularity” or they feel motionless immortality and upcoming madness as described in „Life Overdose”. Each of our song of each album tells a story and it would be totally cool to give everyone the experience to be the protagonist of the song during our performance.
For the last one: how would you introduce „The Engineered Flesh” all in all for those readers, who never heared about the band before?
Modern extreme metal music with no genre limits for open-minded people who are looking for new and innovative music striking a new path.
