Üdvözlet Magyarországról! Egy igazán változatos, klasszikus elemekből felépülő, de ugyanakkor modern lemez született meg Insomnia címmel.
Üdv New Jersey-ből! Nagyon köszönöm! Ez volt a cél, hogy egy modern hangzású felvételt készítsünk, a klasszikus elemek teljes mellőzésével. Elég boldog vagyok az eredménnyel és nagyon köszönöm a hozzászólást!
Miért kellett közel 10 évet várni az új nagylemezre?
Mert a zeneipar szívás! Hosszú történet, de összegezve, a 21. század első fele elég nehéz volt számunkra. Mint tudjuk, az internet fejlődése elég nagy hatással volt a zeneiparra. Ehhez még hozzájött a korábbi kiadónkkal való nehézségek, néhány személyes dolog és túlnőtt rajtam a feladat, hogy egy élő bandát összetartsak. Kicsit ki kellett szállnom a zenekészítésből. Rich és én továbbra is zenéltünk, de inkább a múltbéli dolgokat játszottuk, visszatértünk a gyökerekhez, ami élvezetes volt és segített visszaállni az útra. Most már sokkal optimistább vagyok és örülök, hogy a Lion Music-kal együtt dolgozhatok, egy olyan kiadóval, amit zenészek üzemeltetnek! Kiadtunk egy EP-t 2005-ben, de normális kiadói támogatás nélkül nem sok figyelmet kapott a rajongói bázison kívül.
Miként születnek a dalok? A szöveg alapján vagy alapvetően zenei ötletekből áll össze?
Ha megvan a zenei ötlet vagy inspiráció, a szikra – bárhonnan jöjjön is – és úgy érzem, hogy van benne erő, akkor időt szánok rá, hogy véglegesítsem. A dalszöveg általában a zene után jön, mivel sokat szenvedek azzal, hogy a zene és a dalszöveg által keltett érzelmeket összhangba hozzam. Néhány dal elég egyszerűen megszületik, néhányon többet kell dolgozni. Nincs semmiféle módszer erre, de megpróbálok megragadni minden olyan kis szikrát, amitől egy anyag erős lehet.
A dalszövegek írásakor mi befolyásol, mi az, ami hatással van rád?
A zene által közvetített érzelmek inspirálnak a legjobban. Elég nyilvánvaló, hogy boldog, vagy szomorú egy dal, grandiózus vagy elmélkedő, bármi. Aztán meg kell találni azt a dalszöveget, ami megerősíti ezt az alapérzést, amik általában próbálgatás után sikerülnek, leírok ötleteket, próbálom beilleszteni a dallamba. Néha költőket olvasok vagy ellátogatok a könyvtárba, amikből ihletet kaphatok. Amint megvan a kezdeti dalszöveg, utána már könnyebben megy minden. A legnehezebb megtalálni azokat a szavakat, amik illenek a zene hangulatába.
Az Insomnia borítója sejtelmes, misztikus, de ugyanakkor némi erotika is sugárzik belőle. Te választásod volt?
Igen! Pont ezt képzeltem el. Volt egy távoli, még meghatározhatatlan látomásom egy nőről, aki egy ideig egy tükörbe bámul. Fontolgatja a saját létezését. Nem volt tiszta, de megemlítettem a hangmérnökünknek, aki digitális grafikákkal is foglalkozik és küldött egy durva vázlatot, ami majdnem tökéletes volt! Egy kis csavart tettem az eredeti elképzelésébe, sötétebbé és misztikusabbá tettem és az lett belőle, amit elképzeltem. Tökéletes! Ilyenkor van kész az album. Vannak a belső részén és a hátoldalon is olyan elemek, amik segítenek elmondani a zene történetét és ez szerintem így helyes. Van egy megbúvó tragikus romantika a dalszövegben, sötét, misztikus egy kis erotikával fűszerezve.
Tracy hogyan került a csapatba? Dolgoztatok már együtt más projektben?
Tracey-vel nem sokkal az „Angels of the Apocalypse” kiadása után találkoztam. Lisa Bouchelle énekel az „Angels”-en és nagyszerű munkát végzett, de már az elejétől kezdve világos volt, hogy szóló karriert szeretne indítani, ami rendben is van! Sosem kényszerítettem, hogy örökre velünk maradjon. Még nem dolgoztam előtte vele, egy barát javasolta őt, meghallgattam néhány demoját és úgy gondoltam, hogy tökéletes lenne. Tracey szíve a metál felé húz.
Napjaink rock, metal szcénájából kiket hallgatsz szívesen?
Sajnos azt kell, mondjam, a mai színtérről nem igazán hallgatok zenét. Inkább klasszikus zenét, fúziós jazz-t, korai rock-ot és blues-t, és néha elektronikus, ambient zenét. Ez nem azt jelenti, hogy leragadtam a múltban, pont az ellenkezője, mindig új zenéket hallgatok! Próbálok lépést tartani a dolgokkal és mindig keresek valami újat, ami tetszik. Az Insomnia felvétele alatt, sokat hallgattam a Perfect Circle-t, és mindig figyelemmel kísérek olyan bandákat, mint a Tool, Metallica, The Muse, Dream Theater stb. Jens miatt pedig a Stratovarius-t. Hallgatok néha power metal-t is, de elég sok ugyanúgy hangzik számomra. Inkább a metál előfutárait hallgatom és próbálom megtalálni a saját utamat. Sajnos, szerintem, a legtöbb (nem mindegyik) zenében már nincs meg ugyanaz a szív és lélek. A legtöbb ember már csak a hírnév miatt csinál zenét. A neten elég nagy a zűrzavar és mindenki próbálja bemagyarázni a saját stílusát, amik kezdenek mind ugyan olyan lenni. Ezért próbálok valami mást csinálni!
A következő nagylemezre ugye nem kell újabb 10 évet várni?
Remélem, nem! Rich és én már elkezdtük felvenni az alap sávokat az új albumhoz és elég gazdag anyagot írtam eddig. Nagyjából egy órányi anyagot válogattunk ki az új Mastermind-hoz és más dolgokat is írok mellette, amit talán majd szóló albumként adok ki. Amíg jó kiadó áll mögöttünk, addig kiadunk új albumokat. Sosem gondoltam, hogy ennyi időbe fog telni, mire kiadunk egy új albumot. Már kezdtem feladni a reményt, hogy egyszer napvilágot lát.
Van esélyünk, hogy Magyarországon láthassunk, hallhassunk benneteket?
Esély mindig van rá! Nem szeretnénk jobban semmit annál, mint hogy Európában turnézzunk, de ez pénz kérdése. A világ minden tájáról írnak rajongók, hogy menjünk el hozzájuk játszani. Ha úgy adódik és megtehetjük, ott leszünk! Talán fesztiválok tudják fedezni a kiadásainkat, mert már ez elég lenne nekünk. Közben csak annyit tehetünk, hogy próbáljuk promotálni az új anyagot és igyekszünk újra előtérbe hozni a nevünket.

Greetings from Hungary! A truly varied, building from classical elements but at the same time modern record was made under the title Insomnia.
Greetings from New Jersey! Thank you very much! That was our goal, to make a modern sounding record without totally abandoning our classic elements. I am quite happy with how it turned out and very pleased by your comment!
Why did we have to wait 10 years for the new record?
Because the music business sucks! It is a long story, but to sum it up, the first decade of the 21st Century was difficult for us. The growth of broadband internet dramatically affected the record business as we all know. That combined with difficulties with our previous label, some personal issues, and problems keeping a live band together just overwhelmed me. I had to step away from making music for a little while. Rich and I kept playing music, but we took a trip into our past playing old cover tunes and spent some time rediscovering our roots which was enjoyable and helped me get back on track. I am feeling much more optimistic now and very pleased to be involved with Lion Music, a label that is actually run by a musician! We did release an EP on our own in 2005, but without proper label support it didn’t get much attention beyond our immediate fan base.
How do you compose the songs? Do they come from the lyrics, or basically from musical ideas?
A majority of the time I will get a musical idea or inspiration, the original spark of creation – wherever that comes from – then if I feel it has potential I will spend time crafting it into a final work. Lyrics generally come after the music as I struggle to properly capture or enhance the feeling of the music with the lyrics. Some songs come together quite easily, others take more time to develop. There is no hard and fast rule or method, but I do try to capture as many little sparks of inspiration as possible to have material to work with when I am feeling more crafty than creative.
When writing lyrics, what inspires you?
The feeling I get from the music inspires me the most. It is usually pretty clear whether it is a happy or a sad piece of music for example, grandiose or reflective, whatever. Then finding a lyrical concept that reinforces that feeling basically comes from trial and error, scribbling down ideas, trying to fit them with the melody. Sometimes I will read poetry or visit a library to see if something will spark an idea lyrically. Once I have the initial concept of a lyric, then fleshing it out usually comes fairly easily. It’s that initial effort of finding words that suit the feeling of the music that can be difficult.
The cover of Insomnia is gloomy, mystic but at the same time has a sort of erotic touch to it. Was it your choice?
Yes! It is exactly what I envisioned. I had a distinct, yet undefined vision in my mind of a woman looking into a mirror for some time. Pondering her own existence. It wasn’t clear, but I mention it to our sound tech who also does digital artwork and he sent me a rough draft of something he had done I thought was nearly perfect! I tweaked his initial image, made it darker and a bit more mysterious, and it became exactly what I had envisioned. Perfect! That is when I knew this album was really finished. If you have only seen the front cover you haven’t experienced the full effect of the artwork. There are other elements on the inside and rear that help tell the story of the music and I think it suits it perfectly. There is something of an underlying tragic romantic theme lyrically, so gloomy, mystic, and a touch of erotic is dead on.
How did Tracy get into the band? Have you ever worked together in any other project before?
I met Tracy shortly after we had released the „Angels of the Apocalypse”
album and had done some shows to support it. Lisa Bouchelle is the vocalist on „Angels” and she did a fantastic job, but it was clear to us from the beginning that she was more interested in pursuing a solo career than being a band member – which is fine! I never expected her to be around forever. I had never worked with Tracy before, but a friend suggested her to me, I heard some of her old demo tapes and thought she might be a perfect fit.
Since we were still supporting „Angels” we needed a female voice, so she seemed like a perfect choice. Tracy is much more metal at heart.
Which bands of today”s rock, metal scene do you listen to?
I’m almost afraid to say what I listen to since most of it has nothing to do with today’s scene. Mostly classical music, jazz-fusion, early rock and old blues, sometimes electronica or ambient stuff. This doesn’t mean I am stuck in the past, quite the opposite, I am always listening to new music!
I try to keep up with where things are going and search for new stuff to like. While recording Insomnia I was listening to a lot of A Perfect Circle and I try to stay aware of bands like Tool, Metallica, The Muse, Dream Theater, and so on. Stratovarius of course because of Jens involvement.
That also got me listening to other power metal, but too much of it sounds the same to me. I would rather listen to the precursors of metal and find my own path. I’m sorry to say I don’t feel like most (not all) new music has the same heart and soul as days gone by. More people seem to make music now to become famous than to be real artists. There is so much clutter on the internet, and everything is so pigeon-holed into its own narrow classification, it all begins to sound the same to me. This makes me want to do something completely different!
We do not have to wait for another 10 years for your next full-length, do we?
I hope not! Rich and I have already begun recording some basic tracks for a new album and I have a wealth of material written. We’ve picked out about an hour’s worth of stuff that will be suitable for new Mastermind and I am writing other types of things as well. That may end up being released as a solo record or something. But as long as we have a good label behind us we will continue to release music. I really didn’t think it would take so long to get this album released. I had nearly given up hope it would ever see the light of day.
Is there a chance for us to see, hear you live in Hungary?
There is always a chance! There is nothing we would like more than the opportunity to tour all of Europe, but it does take money. We have fans writing from all over the world saying please come play here! If somehow a situation develops where it would be possible, where we could afford to do it, we will be there! Perhaps a festival or something might be able to cover our expenses which is all we really need. In the meanwhile, promoting this new record and getting our name back out there is the best thing we can do to work towards that goal.
