Sziasztok. Számomra minidig különleges bandának számítottatok. Talán a származásotok és a különleges hangszerek miatt. Mennyire fontos számotokra, hogy egyéni zenét játszatok?
Hello, Xul vagyok, a Melechesh dobosa. Mivel a Melechesh alakította ki a közel-keleti black metál hangzást, az eredetiség, már a kezdetek óta jelen van. A Melechesh minden albummal a „sonic magick” új világait tárja fel, melynek legújabb képviselője a The Epigenesis. Mindig azon voltunk, hogy túlszárnyaljuk magunkat, amit jól mutat a legújabb album.
A „The Epigenesis” új lemezetek a Nuclear Blast kiadónál jelent meg. Hogyan kerültetek velük kapcsolatban? Mekkora sikernek könyvelitek el, hogy az NB kiadónál vagytok?
Az Osmose Productionnal való szerződésbontás után sok lemezcéggel kerültünk kapcsolatba. A Nuclear Blast tűnt a legjobb választásnak és nagyon elégedettek vagyunk velük.
A felvételek nem egy megszokott stúdióban zajlottak. Mit mondanál erről? Miért döntöttetek így?
Az Epigenesist Isztanbulban vettük fel, a Babajim Studiosban. Ez tűnt a leglogikusabb választásnak. Egy nyugati stúdióban is felvehettük volna, de itt is megvannak a profi stúdiók, melyek ráadásul ugyanabban a közegben vannak, melyet a zene sugároz. Az egész terület kulturálisan, zeneileg és még az ételeket illetően is közel áll hozzánk, így könnyű volt meghozni ezt a döntést.
Milyen hangszereket hallhatunk a szokásos gitár, dob stb. mellett? Melyik a kedvenc hangszered :)?
A kedvenc hangszerem a dob, mivel dobos vagyok, de szeretem a hagyományos ütős hangszereket is. Mostanában basszusgitározni is szeretek, de érdekelnek a sima gitárok is, mivel évek óta gitározgatok.
Az Epigenesisen olyan hangszereket hallhattok, mint a 12-húros gitár, mely bizonyos dalok alapját képezi. Ritkábban bár, de használjuk még a következő hangszereket is: Baglama Saz, Tanbour, Perzsa Santur, Ney, Indiai Sitar, Azeri Tar, Bindir. Ezeken kívül néhány számban játszok kézi perkákon is.
Nagyjából 4 év telt el a „Emissaries” óta. Mi történt veletek ez idő tájt? Mikor készült el az első új dalotok? Mennyire nevezhető másnak a „The Epigenesis” album?
Abban az időben sok bulin játszottunk, az Immolationnel, Goatwhoreral és a Sickening Horrorral még egy kiváló európai turnén is részt vettünk, főleg az Emissaries promotálása miatt. Kanadában háromszor játszottunk, nemrég pedig megvolt az első állomokbeli bulink is, a 2010-es Maryland Deathfesten.
Közben Ashmedi felvázolta az új dalokkal kapcsolatos ötleteit, így elkezdtünk jammelni a próbateremben. Azt hiszem az Illumination volt az első szám, amit befejeztünk és még élőben is eljátszottuk, ének nélkül, mivel a dalszöveg akkor még nem volt befejezve.
Az Epigenesis egy egészen organikus hangzású album, nagyon sokszínű. Nem akartuk kétszer ugyanazt az albumot kiadni, de ez még mindig a Melechesh. Ez a fajta fejlődés számunkra természetes.
Ha jól tudom a tavalyi évben volt egy tagcserétek is, méghozzá basszusgitáros téren! Rahm, mennyire számít új arcnak? Régóta ismertétek már? Milyen elvárásaitok vannak egy új zenésszel kapcsolatban?
Rahmot több mint 15 éve ismerem személyesen. Különböző bandákban játszottunk együtt, így mikor megüresedett a basszusgitáros hely, rögtön rá gondoltam. Meghívtuk és nem sokkal később, a profizmusa és nyitott gondolkodásmódja miatt ő lett az új basszusgitáros, a Melechesh egy nagyon fontos tagja.
Szerintem nyugodtan mondhatjuk a Melechesh-t régi bandának, mert már 17 éve léteztek. Most tartotok az ötödik albumnál. Elégedettek vagytok az eddigi sikerekkel, gondolok itt a koncertekre is?
Teljes mértékben. Számunkra minden album egy elért eredmény, a reakciók pedig lenyűgözőek. Ezt látjuk is, mikor az egész bolygót bejárva koncertezünk.
Israelben milyen a zenei élet mostanság? Szokták támadni a zenekart a stílusotok miatt?
A Melechesh sosem volt igazán izraeli banda, így sosem tekintettünk magunkra úgy, mint a színtér nagykövetei. Mindazonáltal azt hiszem, az izraeli zenei színtér igen gazdag. Vannak jó bandák, néhányat személyesen is ismerünk. Ez vonatkozik az egész közép-keleti piacra. Tudomásom szerint még nem támadtak minket a zenénk miatt. Volt néhány incidens a sajtóval, de ezeket már megoldottuk. Az emberek szeretik félreinformálni a másikat, de a végén nem marad semmijük.
Koncerteztetitek az új albumot? Szoktatok használni különféle show elemeket?
Nemrég játszottuk a Ghouls of Nineveht, amely az új album nyitószáma, a svájci Meh Stuff fesztiválon és nagyon jól sikerült. Európában is játszunk majd, hogy promotáljuk az új albumot.
Voltak már színpadi show elemek, mint pl. a hastáncosok vagy tűzokádók, de ezek nem túl gyakoriak. Jelenleg más elemeken gondolkodunk, de ez legyen meglepetés.
Kértek már tőletek furcsaságokat a rajongók? Mennyire ismerkedtek a fanokkal?
Néhány érdekes: valaki azt akarta, hogy a gyermekét Ashmedinek nevezze el, aztán néhány iráni rajongó azt szerette volna, hogy dedikáljuk az útlevelüket (gondolhatod, hogy a hazájuk mennyire liberális), szóval vannak néha érdekes kérések. Legalább izgalmassá teszik a dolgokat.

Hello you all. You’ve always been a special band for me. Maybe because of your origins and the authentic instruments. How important is it for you to play original music?
Hi this is Xul, drummer of Melechesh. The importance of playing original music has been there from the beginning since Melechesh practically invented the Middle Eastern sound of black metal. With each album Melechesh progressed into new realms of sonic magick which resulted into our newest chapter, The Epigenesis. We are always about setting new standards and this definitely shows on the latest album.
Your new album „The Epigenesis” was published under the label of Nuclear Blast. How did you get in contact with them? How big success is it for you to be with NB?
After the contract with Osmose Production ended we came in contact with several record labels. Nuclear Blast proved to be the most suitable choice for Melechesh and we’re very happy with them.
The recordings weren’t made in the usual studio. What would you say about that? Why did you decide like this?
We recorded The Epigenesis in Babajim Studios, Istanbul because for us it was the most logical choice. We could have recorded in a studio in the West , but you have access to a professional studio in the East where the surroundings breathe the very essence of the music you’re playing, it was a statement and it paid off. The whole area is culture wise, music wise and even culinary wise up our ally so this decision was easily made.
What instruments can we hear besides the usual guitar, drums, etc.? Which is your favorite instrument ?
Obviously my favorite instrument are the drums because I’m a drummer but I also like the traditional percussion instruments. Recently I became quite fond of the bassguitar but I also find normal guitars interesting since I started out on guitar many years ago.
On The Epigenesis album you will hear variety of instruments like the 12 string electric guitars which we used as the main instrument for certain songs. Also used but in a more subtle way are Baglama Saz, Tanbour, Persian Santur, Ney, Indian Sitar, Azeri Tar, Bindir. Besides these instruments also little handpercussion was used in several songs.
It’s been about 4 years since „Emissaries”. What happened to you during this time? When was your first new song made? How different is „The Epigenesis”?
We played a lot of shows in that period, went on an excellent European tour with Immolation, Goatwhore and Sickening Horror basically promoting the Emissaries album. We’ve played Canada three times and recently we did our first U.S. show which was at Maryland Deathfest 2010.
In the mean time Ashmedi was already coming up with new ideas for new songs so me and him jammed a lot in the rehearsal room. I believe Illumination was the first finished song and we even played it live one time without vocals because the lyrics weren’t finished at the time.
The Epigenesis album is a very organic sounding album, very diverse. We don’t want to create the same album twice but it’s still totally Melechesh. This whole development is totally natural for us.
If I know it right, you had a member change for the basser post! How new is Rahm to you? Have you known him for long? What expectations do you have considering a new member?
I personally know Rahm for more than 15 years. We used to play together in different bands so when the position of bassplayers opened up I thought of him instantly.
Rahm was invited and not long after that he became the new bassplayer because of his professionalism and open-mindedness which is very important in Melechesh.
I think we can call Melechesh an old band, as you have been in existence for 17 years. Now it’s your fifth album. Are you satisfied with your achievements so far (including the concerts)?
Most definitely. Every album so far was a accomplishment on its own and the reactions are overwhelming. We can definitely see that when we play shows all over the globe.
How’s the musical scene in Israel nowadays? Do you have to take attacks because of your style?
Melechesh was never really an Israeli band, so we never saw ourselves as the embassadors of the scene. Nontheless, I believe the music scene in Israel is healthy. There are some good bands operating there and we know some of them personally, the same applies for the entire Middle east it is a rising Metal market. As far as I know we haven’t been attacked because of our musical style. There were some incidents with the press in the past but that’s all settled a long time ago before my time, Ashmedi and Moloch did have challenges within their community . People like to misinform others out of sheer publicity but they always ended up with empty hands and squashed ego’s.
Do you play the new material live frequently? Do you use various show-elements?
We recently played Ghouls of Nineveh, which is the opening track of our new album The Epigenesis, live at the Meh Suff festival in Switzerland and it turned out pretty well. Right now we´re on the eve of playing a couple of shows in Europe to celebrate the release of the album.
In the past we´ve had some show-elements like belly dancers and fire breathers on stage but those elements are not very frequent. Right now we’re thinking of some other elements but that will be a surprise.
Have you ever had any weird requests from the fans? How much do you keep in contact with them?
Several some examples: one person wanted to call their new born Ashmedi, while some Iranian fans insisted to sign their passports (you can imagine their country is not exactly liberal) , often there are weird or outlandish requests. Keeps things interesting I suppose
