Srácok, az első kérdésem az lenne, hogy van Pete Sandoval? Mi történt vele pontosan? Mikor térhet vissza hozzátok?
Petenek problémái akadtak a hátával, jelenleg lábadozik egy hát műtétből. A hátprobléma komoly dolog, fogalmunk sincs, mikor térhet vissza, ha egyáltalán visszajön. A legjobbakat kívánjuk neki, bármi legyen is.
Helyettese egy fiatal, tehetséges ütős lett Tim Yeung, hogyan került a képbe?
Nos, Tim ismert név a metál színtéren, így megkérdeztük, lenne-e kedve dobolni a Morbid Angelben. Mivel már nem tagja a Divine Heresynek , volt ideje elvállalni. Nagyon elégedettek vagyunk vele, egy gép, ami rengeteg erőt ad a bandának. Nagyon jó fej, jó vele lógni is.
Rajta kívül meghallgattatok mást is, mint lehetséges dobost?
Igen, felmerült egy-két név, de igazából rögtön Tim-et kerestük meg. Mást nem próbáltunk ki, csak néhány másik fickóval beszéltünk.
A másodgitáros Thor Anders Myhren csak kisegítő muzsikus vagy állandó tag? Ő rá hogyan akadtatok?
Igen, állandó tag vagyok. Az elején csak koncerteken zenéltem, de minden jól ment, ezért meghívtak állandó tagnak.
Az interneten keresztül tartották a meghallgatást, és videókat kellet beküldened, amin a „Rupture” és a „Pain Divine” számokat játszod. A Zyklonnal turnéztunk is a Morbid Angellel. Így már tudták mire vagyok képes, de egyébként engem is a videók alapján választottak. Nagy élmény volt!
Adja magát a kérdés: miért kellett 8 évet várni a korongra? Hogyan foglalnátok össze az eltelt 8 esztendőt?
Nos, mivel én még csak 3 és fél éve vagyok a bandában, fogalmam sincs, mi tarthatott 8 évig, mire a Morbid Angel ismét kiadott egy lemezt. Különböző okok miatt késhet egy album, pl. várni egy megfelelő kiadóra, turné lehetőségek és a tény, hogy a művészet időtlen. Néha meg kell várnod a megfelelő pillanatot. Persze, 8 év hosszú idő, de mint mondtam, erről nem tudok nyilatkozni.
A Nevermore volt az első dalotok, ami megszületett a lemezhez, igaz? Ez egyfajta útirány volt az új lemezt illetően? Kinek az ötlete volt, hogy single-ként is kiadjátok a dalt?
Igen, a Nevermore volt az első szám a felvételen. Nem mondanám, hogy ez a szám mutatja az irányt az albumon, mivel rengeteg más anyag is felkerült.
A kiadóval közösen úgy döntöttünk, a „Nevermore”-t kiadjuk single-ként. Nagyon jó szám, és jól képviseli a Morbid Angel-t. Igen, ahogy mondtam, az albumra sok különböző anyag került fel, de Death Metal bandaként, a Morbid Angel az marad, ami, és ez a szám nagyszerűen meséli el a Morbid történetet.
Hogyan, mikor, mennyi idő alatt állt össze az új anyag? Hogyan zajlott a dalszerzés? Tim és Thor is belefolyt az alkotó munkába?
Mikor 2008 májusában csatlakoztam, még csak a Nevermore volt kész. Az album nagyobb része 2009 és 2010 közt írodott és én is részt vettem a dalszerzésben (Destructhor). Két számot írtam, melyek a “ Blades for Baal “ és a “ 10 more Dead “. Ezeket otthon írtam Norvégiában 2009 nyarán.
A „Blades of Baal” egy hathúros szám, gyors és örjöngő. Akartam egy héthúros számot is, ez lett a „10 more Dead”. Jó érzés volt részt venni a dalszerzésben. Nagyon szeretek számokat írni és nem szívesen lennék egy bandába, ha ebből a folyamatból kimaradnék. Szóval ezt nagyra értékelem. Tim nem írt számot erre az albumra, de sok dobolási ötlete volt. Fontos szerepet játszik abban, hogy úgy szól az album, ahogy. Nagyszerű munkát végzett.
Sosem adtátok ki kétszer ugyanazt az albumot és ez a megállapítás az új korongra hatványozottan igaz, milyen hatások, inspirációk értek benneteket a lemez készítése közben?
Saját részről, természetesen olyan számokat akartam írni, melyekben benne van a Morbid Angel lüktetés, de fellelhetőek benne a saját vonásaim is. Ezt egyébként is elég nehéz elkerülni. Tisztán hallható például néhány norvég akkord a „Blades of Baal”-ban. Van bennük egy kis Myrkskog (saját norvég bandám) és Zyklon (R.I.P.) hatás. David Vincent írta az összes dalszöveget. Szerintem a számok nagyszerűek zeneileg, dalszövegek és ének terén is. Nagyon elégedett vagyok a végeredménnyel.
Elég vegyes kritikákat olvastam a lemezzel kapcsolatban, foglalkoztok azzal, hogy kinek mi a véleménye a Morbid Angel lemezekről? Érdekelnek benneteket a kritikák?
Valóban nagyon sokféle kritika érte ezt a kiadványt. Természetesen érdekel a kritika, de ez nem áll az utunkba, még mindig azt csinálunk, amit akarunk. Először is, a legfontosabb, hogy te magad elégedett legyél az albummal, de mindig jó hallani néhány jó szót a több hónapos/éves munkádról. Nem hagyjuk, hogy a kritika döntse el, mit tegyünk, vagy hogy érezzünk. A művészet egocentrikus.
Ti magatok hogyan definiálnátok az új anyagot? Death metal banda még a Morbid Angel?
Igen, a Morbid Angel még mindig egy death metal banda! Van egy albumunk, melyen néhány szám elektronikus. Ne feledjük, hogy attól még az album fele death metal. Viszont megértem a negatív kritikákat egyes emberektől. Én is eléggé meglepődtem, mikor először meghallottam az új anyagot. Őszintén, én is jobban szeretném, ha az album csak tiszta death metal lenne, az elektronikus dolgok nélkül. Viszont a Morbid Angel mindig különbözött, és ez is ennek a bizonyítéka. Mint mondtam, csak néhány számban használtunk elektronikus megoldásokat. A Morbid Angel túlnyomó részt még mindig Death Metal.
Szerintem mindig két lépéssel a death metal mezőny előtt jártatok, nagyon sok csapatra fejtettek ki felbecsülhetetlen hatást, erről mi a véleményetek?
Szerintem majdnem „minden” extreme metal bandára hatással van a Morbid Angel. Sokat tettek a metal színtérért, és több, mint 20 éves múltra tekinthetnek vissza. Egyike a death metal Keresztapáknak. Hatalmas tiszteletet kapnak azért a tényért, hogy ők voltak azon bandák egyike, akik létrehozták a death metal-t. Ezt keverve az egyedi hangzással, rengeteg bandára lehetnek hatással.
A jelen death metal színtér foglalkoztat benneteket? Követitek a death metal színtér alakulását?
Persze! Imádom a death metalt! Mindig jó hallani, miket hoznak az új bandák. Izgalmas hallani, hova fejlődik ez a brutális művészet. Szeretem azt a fajta „versengést”, hogy ki tud extrémebben játszani, persze úgy, hogy kifejezik az érzelmeket és van mondanivaló.

Guys, my first question would be what’s up with Pete Sando? What exactly happened to him? When can he return back to you?
Pete has problems with his back, and is now recovering from a back surgery. And back problems are serious stuff, so it is impossible to say by now when or if he will be back. We wish him all the best, whatever happens.
How did his substitute, a young, talented drummer, Tim Yeung get into the picture?
Well, Tim is a known name within the metal scene, so we did get in touch with him about doing the drums in Morbid Angel. And since he is no longer in Divine Heresy he did have the time to do it. And we are very pleased with having him in the band. He is a machine and add a lot of power to the band. And he is a great guy being around socially as well.
Did you listen to any other talented drummers apart from him?
Yes, there was a name or two, but we pretty much got straight to Tim. We did not try out any others. We were just talking to a couple of guys.
Is the second guitarist, Thor Anders Myhren an auxiliary guitarist of the band or is he also a fix member? How did you find him?
Yes, I am a permanent member of the band. I did start out as a live guitarist, but as everything went very well I became a permanent member.
They had an audition through internet where they wanted you to send in videos of you performing “ Rapture “ and “ Pain Divine “. But I also did a couple of tours with Morbid Angel in the past with Zyklon. So they knew some of my work already. But anyway, I was chosen through the audition videos. And it is a great gig, indeed!
The question remains: why did we have to wait 8 years for the album? How would you sum up this last 8 years?
Well as I have only been in the band for three and a half year, it is hard for me to say exactly why it did take eight years before the album came out. And of course to sum up these years would be hard for me too. But, there can be various things that delay an album. Like waiting to find the right label to put out an album on, touring situations and the fact that art is timeless. Sometimes you need to spend some time until you feel it is the right time. Of course eight years is way too long, but then again I can’t speak for all these years.
Nevermore was your first song that you wrote for the album, right? Was it kind of a guiding-stone for the rest of the album? Whose idea was it to publish the song also as a single?
Yes, Nevermore was the first song composed to this record. I would not say it is a guiding stone to this album, as it is a lot of different stuff appearing on this release.
The band together with the record label made the decision to make “ Nevermore “ as a single. It is a very good song and I definitely think this song is a good representative for Morbid Angel. Yes, as I said the album contains a lot of different stuff. But as the Death Metal band Morbid Angel always were and still is, this song tells the Morbid tale for sure.
How, when and for how long did you put the new material together? How did songwriting go? Did Tim and Thor also take part in the creative work?
When I joined the band in May ’08, “ Nevermore “ was the only song ready. But the main part of the album was written around ’09 – ’10. I ( Destructhor ) did take part in the songwriting. I composed the two songs called “ Blades for Baal “ and “ 10 more Dead “. I did write those songs home in Norway the summer of ’09.
“Blades for Baal “ is a six string song, and a fast and furious one. And I wanted to make a seven string song as well, which became the “ 10 more Dead “ song which is more of a mid paiste song. It was great to get the opportunity to be part of the songwriting. I am a songwriting type of musician and would not care to be in a band without being part of this. So I do appreciate that a lot. Tim did not write any music for this album, but he did contribute with a lot of drumming ideas. He plays an very important part to make it all sound like it does. He has done an awesome job.
You have never published the same album twice and this fact stands for the new album even stronger, what influences and inspirations were you under during the making of the album?
For my part I of course wanted to create songs with a Morbid Angel vibe, but still with my signature to it. That is kind of hard to get around anyway. But you can clearly hear some “ Norwegian chords “ in especially “ Blades for Baal “. It got a little Myrkskog ( my band from Norway ) and Zyklon ( R.I.P. ) influences. But David Vincent did all the lyrical and vocally work this songs as the rest of the record. I think the songs came out great both musically as well as lyrically and vocally. I am quiet satisfied with the final result.
Critiques on the album were pretty much mixed, did it ever matter to you what different people think of Morbid Angel albums? Do you care about critiques?
There has definitely been a lot of different critiques for this release. Of course we care about critiques, but that doesn’t go in the way of doing what we want. First and foremost you need to be satisfied yourself with the product. But it is always nice to hear good words about months/ years of work. But we don’t let the critiques decide what we wanna do or how we feel about ourselves. Art is ego centric.
How would you define the new material? Is Morbid Angel still a death metal band?
Yes, Morbid Angel is still a death metal band! We got one album where there is a few songs which are electronic. Remember the fact that half of the album is still death metal all the way. But I do understand the negative reactions from certain people though. I mean, I got pretty surprised myself when I first heard the new material. Honestly, I would also like the album to be pure death metal all the way through, without all the electronic stuff. But Morbid Angel were always different, and this is a proof of exactly that. But again, there are only a few songs which is this way. There is still a huge musical catalogue around Morbid Angel which is all death metal.
I think you’ve always been two steps forward of the death metal scene and you have influenced a lot of bands invaluably, what do you think of that?
I think almost “ every “ extreme metal band has some kind of influence from Morbid Angel. They have meant a lot to the metal scene with their legacy going back more than twenty years ago. They are amongst a few others the Godfathers of death metal. It is a lot of respect around the fact that these guys were one of the creators of the genre death metal. And combined with being really different sounding, it results in influencing a great number of bands.
Do you care about the current death metal scene? Do you follow its happenings?
Absolutely! I love death metal! It’s great to hear what new bands bring. It is very exciting to hear the evolvement of the brutal art. I am very much into the new kind of “ contest “ in performing as extreme as possible, but it has to be created and performed with emotions and a story to tell.
