Ian, a My Silent Wake-et te alapítottad, milyen indíttatásból hívtad életre a zenekart? Mi volt a célod a csapattal?
Olyan bandát akartam, ami átveheti az Ashen Mortality helyét, mivel azt már személyes okok miatt nem folytathattuk. Nem akartam merőben eltérő bandát csinálni, csak rugalmasabbat és kevésbé stílus-kötöttet. Az MSW tulajdonképp az AM-ből áll, kivéve az énekesnőt. Az utolsó AM bulit is nélküle csináltuk, így nevezhetjük azt az első MSW bulinak. A két új tag az alakulás után nem sokkal csatlakozott. Az említett utolsó AM buli 2004 végén volt, és 2005 májusában már el is kezdtük a felvételeket az MSW-vel. Az első perctől kezdve olyan barátokkal játszom együtt, akik olyan zenét játszanak, amit szeretnek és nem a pénz hajtja őket.
Hogyan és mikor találtad meg a többi tagot a csapathoz? Kik voltak ők és milyen zenei háttérrel rendelkeztek?
A többi tag Andi és Jasen, basszuson és dobon, az új tagok pedig Alan, basszuson, így Andi ritmusgitáron is játszhat, Kate pedig csellón. Én a Seventh Angelben és az Ashen Mortalityben játszotam. Andi különféle dologban vett részt, Jasen pedig egy Bloodwork nevű bandában játszott. Alan volt a The Other Windows alapítója, melynek én is tagja voltam. Kate még nem játszott bandában, de tanult zongorázni és még más hangszeren is játszik. Az élő fellépések miatt Andi ritmusgitáron játszik, Kate pedig basszuson, Jasen pedig énekel. Én vokálozok és szológitáron játszok. Steve Allan lett az új dobosunk. Elég bonyolult!
Teljesen új bandaként tekintesz, tekintettél a My Silent Wake-re vagy az Ashen Mortality folytatására egy új név alatt? Mire utal, amúgy a zenekar neve?
Sok szempontból egy folytatás, de inkább új dolgok történnek. Néhány számot áthoztunk az AM-ből, melyeket kár lett volna elvesztegetni. Mára már csak én maradtam az AM-ből, mivel Jasen és Andi kiléptek családi okok és a munka miatt. Az AM-es kapcsot ez még jobban gyengítette. Kate és én írjuk a számokat, valamint én is írok néhányat egyedül. A következő albumhoz csak mi írjuk a zenét. Az előző albumon elég megosztott volt az írás folyamata. A My Silent Wake-et elég nehéz lefordítani, a wake itt a virrasztásra utal. Nem igazán magyaráznám meg, jobb szeretném nyitva hagyni a kérdést.
Az Ashen Mortality-hez viszonyítva, hogyan jellemeznéd az MSW-t? Értem ezalatt a zenét és a szövegeket.
Először is az AM inkább keresztény témákkal operált. A kezdeteknél a számok a Seventh Angelre hajaztak. Aztán kicsit doomosítottuk, de nem nagyon. Az MSW dalszövegei a kései AM dalszövegekre hajaznak és főként a tapasztalatokra, belső érzésekre épít. Az MSW zenéje sokkal szabadabb és nem sorolható be szigorúan a doom/death műfajba. Játszhatunk space rockot, ’70-es évek rockját, vagy sokkal gothosabb számokat is, és valami ilyesmit is teszünk. Gyakran megszólnak, hogy túl sok stílust használunk, de mi csak azt játszunk, amit szeretünk és minden számot egyénként írunk. A változatos számok nagyon fontosak, nem csak a riffek és nem csak az, hogy súlyosnak hasson.
Mivel az MSW korábbi anyagait nem ismerem, megkérnélek, hogy mondjál pár szót azokról az anyagokról illetve foglald össze a zenekar eddigi történetét!
A felvételek a 2005-ös, kétszámos EP-vel kezdődtek, aztán jött a „Shadow of Sorrow” album, még ugyanabban az évben. Ezután következett a dupla album, ’The Anatomy of Melancholy’, majd az ’A Garlan of Tears’ és egy split album a The Drowning-gal, a ’Black Lights and Silent Roads’, mely tavaly jelent meg. Röviden ezután, kiadtuk az új albumot, IV Et Lux Perpetua, ez is tavaly jelent meg. 2007-ben kezdtünk koncertezni és azóta is nyomjuk. Tavaly a norvég In Vain-nel bejártuk Európát. Idén pedig ritkaságokat adunk majd a Dark Meadownál, mely egy kis angol független kiadó. Olyan 100 példányban kerül kiadásra. Reméljük, a kövekező albumunk már a Dark Balancenél jön ki.
Eddigi kiadványaitokat a Bombworks jelentette meg, a tavalyi negyedik lemezeteket viszont már a Dark Balance, milyen okok állnak a kiadóváltás mögött? Több reklámot, promóciót kaptok jelenlegi kiadótoktól?
Úgy éreztük, itt az ideje váltani. Tavaly a Dark Balance-os Kimmel dolgoztunk és rájöttünk, mennyire jó ez a kiadó, és nagyszerűen tudna promotálni minket. Az előző Bombworks-ös promo nem volt valami nagy szám. Rengeteg kritikát kaptunk az új albumról, és Kim rögtön elküldött minket turnézni. A Bombworks sokat tett a banda útjának elején, de itt az ideje továbblépni.
Ami az új korongot illeti, hogyan álltak össze a számok? Mennyi ideig dolgoztatok a dalokon, mire elnyerték végső formájukat?
A számokat sokkal gyorsabban írtuk, mint a többi albumnál, de kevés időnk is volt rá. Ősszel kezdtük el az írást, és Steve, a dobosunk miatt, már januárra készen kellett lennünk, mert új karriert kezdett. Az albumot kb. 1 hét alatt vettük fel. A keverést és masterelést itthon végeztük, de Kim újrakeverést és újramasterelést akart, ami Finnországban történt. Minden albumot a somerset-i Kewsound stúdióban vettünk fel. A stúdió csak néhány kilométerre van onnan, ahol lakok, és Steve Allan vezeti, aki a dobosunk is lett. Az új dobos most Tank, a Seventh Angelből.
Mennyiben tér el vagy hasonlít az Et Lux Perpetua a korábbi korongjaitoktól?
Elsődlegesen még mindig egy death/doom album, de sokkal egyszerűbb, mint az előző albumaink. Nincsenek akusztikus számok, ami számunkra különleges. Vannak hozzáadott elemek, mint az analóg szinti, de a több hangszerességet a minimumra csökkentettük. Később visszatérünk az akusztikus és metál dalokra is, valamint többhangszeres téma is várható.
Jól látom, hogy ezúttal rövidebb, fogósabb dalokban, témákban gondolkodtatok? Mit kell tudnunk a szövegekről? Milyen témákat boncolgatnak a szövegek? Keresztény bandának tartod az MSW-t?
Igen, a dalok rövidebbek és jobban emészthetőek. Nem vagyunk keresztény banda, bár a kezdetekkor voltak keresztény hatások. Gyakran tévesztenek minket össze keresztény bandákkal, mivel olyan kiadónál voltunk, aki keresztény bandákkal is foglalkozik. Viszont a Dark Balance semleges kiadó, ami nekünk jobban megfelel. Jelenleg főleg ateista tagokból áll a banda. Én keresztény nevelést kaptam, de nyitott gondolkodású vagyok. A zenénk épp annyit adhat egy keresztény embernek, mint bárki másnak. Nem zárunk ki senkit, és nem írunk olyan számokat, ami bárkit is támad.

Ian, My Silent Wake was established by you, what was your purpose with the band?
To build a new band to replace Ashen Mortality. AM had come to an end and it was impossible to keep it going for personal reasons. I didn’t want to do something particulary different to AM, but wanted MSW to have much more flexibility and to be able to play whatever we felt like; not being restricted by genre. MSW was effectively formed with the members of the last incarnation of AM minus the female vocalist. The last gig we did as Ashen Mortality actually only featured the members of My Silent Wake, so it was also like the first MSW gig. Two other members joined shortly after the band was formed. The last AM gig I mentioned was towards the end of 2004 and by May 2005 MSW had started to record. From the beginning the band was formed as a collaboration of friends wanting to make the music we loved and to have a great time together creating and performing our music. Money was never a motive (obviously) and we have never made any money from the band, as everything was ploughed back in and used to record or produce merchandise.
How and when did you find the rest of the members? Who are they and what musical background do they have?
The other members from AM were Andi and Jasen on bass and drums and the new members were Alan on bass (so Andi could play rhythm guitar as well as bass) and Kate on cello to begin with and lots of other instruments as things progressed. My background was with Seventh Angel and Ashen Mortality. Andi had done various things over the years and Jasen was also in a band called Bloodwork. Alan was the founder member of The Other Window, which I was also a part of. Kate had never been in a band before, but had been trained on the piano and she was able to play a number of other instruments. In order for MSW to play live, Andi switched to guitar, Kate learnt the bass (Alan had left by this point), Jasen switched to vocals from the drums due to an injury. I was doing lead vocals and lead guitar. Steve Allan from the studio we were recording at, became our drummer. All very complicated!
You consider My Silent Wake as a brand new band, or as a continuation of Ashen Mortality? What does the name refers to?
In many ways it is a continuation, but it feels much more like a new band. Some songs penned for AM were used by MSW as they were too good to waste, but we never performed any old AM songs live, we just wanted to move forward. Now I am the only remaining member from the AM days as Jasen and Andi have now had to leave the band due to work and family commitments. This has made the link to AM even weaker now. These days, Kate and I write some songs together, and I write some on my own. We will be the only writers on the next album. The last album had a variety of writers for both the lyrics and the music.
The name My Silent Wake is hard to pin down as a definite meaning. Wake can be interpreted as a funeral wake or the wake of a ship. I don’t like to put too much of a definition to it, as I like the meaning to be fairly open.
Compared to Ashen Mortality, how would you characterite MSW? I mean music and lyrics.
The lyrics for AM were much more Christian themed to begin with. Some of the songs we used in the beginning were penned for Seventh Angel. They were altered to fit a doom band, but not too drastically. The lyrics for MSW were more like the later AM lyrics and were mainly about experiences and personal insights. The music for MSW is much more free and not so restricted by the doom/death genre. We do have the freedom to play space rock, 70s rock or more gothic songs if we wish and this is something we have done. We have sometimes been critisized for the amount of styles we cover, but we only play what we enjoy and we write each song as an individual entity. For us variety is important and songs are important, not just riffs and not just trying to be as heavy as possible.
Since I’m not familiar with MSW’s previous works, please, tell us a few things about then and briefly summarize the band’s history.
The recording history starts with a two track EP recorded in 2005, then the full length ‘Shadow of Sorrow’ recorded the same year. This was followed by the double album ‘The Anatomy of Melancholy’. The next album was ‘A Garland of Tears’, which was followed by a split album with The Drowning called ‘Black Lights and Silent Roads’ which was released last year. Shortly after this, we released our new album IV Et Lux Perpetua. We started gigging in 2007 and have played steadily ever since. We toured Europe last year with In Vain from Norway. This year we have a compilation of live and rare material coming out on Dark Meadow which is a small indipendent label in the UK which releases short run albums. It will probably be limited to 100 copies. We hope the next full length studio album will be coming out on Dark Balance.
Your albums was released by Bombworks til now, but the last album was released by Dark Balance. What caused changing label? Do you get more commercial, promotion from this label?
We felt it was time for a change. There were a few reasons we took this decision, but one was that I had been working with KIm from Dark Balance on a Seventh Angel tour last year and realised that this was a great label and one that could promote the band and put us on tours. The last release with Bombworks wasn’t promoted too heavily to say the least, but the new album has had a lot of promotion through a top promotions company. We had a lot of reviews for the new album and Kim put us on a tour straight away. I think Bombworks did a lot to get the band known in the beginning which we are still grateful for, but it was time to move on.
About the new album, how did you write the songs? How long did it take to finish it?
The songs were written much quicker than our other albums due to the short time we had to complete work on it. We started writing in the Autumn and the album had to be finished in January as Steve, our drummer was starting a new career at that time and needed a proper break from the band. The album was recorded in about a week. It was mixed and mastered in this country, but Kim wanted it remixed and remastered, so that took place in Finland. All albums were recorded in the same studio at Kewsound in Somerset. The studio is a few miles from where I live and was operated at the time by Steve Allan who also became our drummer when Jasen injured his wrist. The new drummer is Tank from Seventh Angel.
What are the differences or similarities between Et Lux Perpetua and your former releases?
It is still primarily a death/doom album but it is much more stripped down and simple than our other albums. There are no acoustic songs on it which is unique for us. There are added elements such as analogue synth, but the multi instrumentation is kept to a minimum. This is a one off for us and we will return to acoustic songs as well as metal songs on the next releases and we will use far more instrumentation.
Am I right, that this time the songs are shorter and catchier? Do you consider MSW a christian band Are faith and God important to you? Are you a believer?
The songs are indeed shorter and catchier and the production is very different to our other albums. As for the Christian element; the band is not a Christian band though it did have Christian influence at the start. We often get mistaken for a Christian band due to being on labels that release Christian stuff. Dark Balance is a neutral label which suits us better. The band never had an agenda and was there just as an artistic outlet for us. There was never any hidden desire to evangelise or change anyone. These days we have members who are mainly atheist. I personally was brought up as a Christian, but keep an open mind. I think our music has a lot to offer to Christians as well as everyone else. We do not exclude anyone and we are not the sort of band to write music which attacks anyone.
