Nervecell Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)1

A kérdésekre Rajeh „James” Khazaal énekes/bőgős és Barnaby „Barney” Ribeiro gitáros válaszolt.

Hi! Először is, gratula az új albumhoz. Szerintem nagyon erős lemez lett. Egyetértesz?

James: Mindenképp egyetértek ebben. Sok erőfeszítést és kemény munkát öltünk ebbe a nagyszerű alkotásba. Mindig is magas sztenderdek fölállításával igyekeztünk alkotni, mind a zenét, mind a hangzást tekintve.

Változnak a dolgok mostanában?

James: Nos, először a szlovéniai Metal Camp-en játszottunk 2007-ben, ugyanebben az évben játszottunk a legnagyobb európai fesztiválokon is (Wacken, With Full Force and Rock AM Ring). Ami a Nervecellt illeti, Erópát érezzük a hazánknak zenei értelemben.

Nemrég írtatok alá szerződést a LifeForce-szal.

A borítókép minőségi munka. Kinek a kezét dicséri?

ENGLISH VERSION:

The questions were answered by Rajeh „James” Khazaal vocalist/bassist and Barnaby „Barney” Ribeiro guitarist.

Hi! First of all, congratulations for the new album I thin it’s a very strong release. Do you agree?

James:I certainly agree on this one. A lot of effort and hard work has been put into this great piece of work. We have always aimed at producing something with great standards, musical and production wise. This album has been on tour before it was released hahaha; the drums were recorded in Australia by Dave from Psycroptic, it was mixed in Poland in Hertz Studios, Mastered in the USA, and the artwork was done in Holland. I can’t wait till the album will be released on European grounds by October 26th.

The band was formed in the Dubai, but as far as I know none of you are actually UAE nationals. Please tell me how you met and formed the band.

Barney: Nervecell started in the local scene playing tons of university gigs and back in 2002 we had played with our first line-up in the university that Rami and James studied in, they liked the band and we became friends and eventually members of the band soon after. It was about until 2003 when the line up had changed and which also led to James and Rami joining the band, it happened very naturally and we our till today close friends in the band.
Its also true that none of us are UAE nationals, James is Lebanese, Rami is Jordanian, Loui is Australian and I am half Indian and half Portuguese!

A related question: the drums on „Preaching Venom” were played by David Haley from Psycroptic; now you are playing live with session drummer Louis Rando. Are you now looking for a stable drummer?

Barney: We are very pleased with Loui filling in on drums for us, we would hope for a stable drummer in the sense that someone who lives near to us or in Dubai.
However so far having Loui in the band almost feels like he is the 4th member so I hope it stays that way with him and that we could go on to write and compose new music with this line-up too.

There are only a very few bands in the Arabic world compared to Europe or America. Does that mean difficulties for you? How many people will attend a gig, should you play live there. I have read that in some other countries like Lebanon, metal as such was against the law some years ago. Are things changing now?

Barney: Things are definitely changing, the media back home is covering more about music in general now than ever before! We always knew it would take a while before metal music gets its acceptance in the Middle East but I can firmly say that in Dubai and Lebanon at least there are very vibrant scenes. What could improve is the frequency of shows that take place, metal gigs are rare and so this could definitely improve with more promoters taking an active role!
Metal Music used to be banned in Dubai too…but with the Deset rock festival taking place every year, it basically forced the authorities to reconsider their thoughts as it opened their eyes and made them realize how many people metal music can bring to a show.

I can hear many different influences on the new album. Could you mention some?

Barney: Wow well we don’t really have a formula when we write our music, we write very naturally and we certainly try not to sound like anyone else of course.
I know Rami and I as guitarists we are fans of the old school thrash metal bands like Sepultura, Kreator, Testament etc. and the melodic death metal bands too. I personally am a huge fan of the early 90’s death metal scene with bands such as Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Pestilence, Vader, Morbid Angel etc…

Is there really some Eastern flavor to your music or am I just imagining it? Not as obvious, of course, like with folk bands, but I bet I can hear something.

James: What I really like about Nervecell is the fact that despite we are based in the Middle East, we don’t boast or take advantage of typical eastern music. Our main focus is our own style and sound. If there will be any oriental melodies those are definitely in Rami’s solos. I believe that’s the best way we can put it.

The promo sheet writes that the album has just been released, whereas other sources claim it has been released for more than a year. What’s the truth, then?

James: We released the album in the Middle East in April 2008. We got it distributed by a company which we no longer work with. The album will be released in Europe on the 26th of October through LifeForce records… That’s the truth.

How often do you play live in Europe?

James: Well first played in Slovenia’s Metal Camp 2007, this year we played on the biggest European Festivals ever (Wacken, With Full Force and Rock AM Ring). The band is playing in new grounds and countries in Europe, the turnouts have been more than successful, and we do realize that this is a very strong base for the band. You know here is where it all started; the people here are educated metal wise. Nervecell wise we do realize that this is our home for our music. We know for sure that we will be stopping by here a lot and we love it.

You have just recently signed a contract with LifeForce. To what extent has that changed (improved) your opportunities?

Barney: Well its only been about 2 months since LifeForce Records signed us and we can see there are things lining up for us come 2010! We feel it will be a busy year for us especially since „Preaching Venom” will be out all over Europe and it will make perfect sense for us to be touring a lot more and try and build a strong fan base here in Europe!

The cover art is really quality work. Who can be credited for it?

Barney: Dennis Sibeijn from Monument studios, we really liked his work with other artists like Aborted, All Shall Perish etc. and so we just decided to go ahead and contact him, he seemed interested when we explained the concept of the album to him and he basically just brought it to reality!

Thank you for the interview. Do you send any message for the readers of Kronos Mortus?

James: Hey guys, we hope to see you soon, and we would love to play in Hungary soon. Take care and Stay Loyal!
