Nightwish Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

A kérdésekre Marco Hietala válaszolt.

Kezdjük a Nightwish legutóbbi albumával, az Imaginaerum-mal. Mit szólsz a hatalmas sikerhez? Voltak kétségeid, hogy esetleg nem úgy fogják a rajongók fogadni miután a stílus kissé megváltozott?

Szerintem is nagyszerű album lett.

Hogyhogy ennyire különbözik a két album?

Tiszta lappal kezdhettünk, ezzel a felállással.

Anette mintha most jobban elkapta volna az Imaginaerum zenéjét. Mi a véleményed a két albumon nyújtott szerepléséről?

Szerintem, mire minden a helyére kerül, nagyszerű lesz.

Azzal kezdtük, aztán jött persze a metál. Muszáj szabadjára engedned a képzeletedet.

Melyik a kedvenc részed az Imaginaerum-on? Melyik szereted a legjobban élőben játszani?

Élő szám.. szerintem a bulik utolsó száma, a Last Ride of the Day.
Ezeket élőben is jó játszani.

Miről szól az általad szerzett The Crow, the Owl, and the Dove?

Mik a jövőbeni tervek?

Sokat nyúltunk a koncertekből is.
Végre, tavasszal most először, felvehetjük a rövidgatyákat [nevet].

Volt alkalmatok megtekinteni a várost?

Igen.
Imádom a fokhagymát, nálam bejönnek a fűszeres dolgok.

A szabadidőnket általában pihenéssel töltjük.

Háttérbe szorulnak a Nightwishben betöltött szereped miatt?

A Tarot jelenleg úgymond szünetel. Most nagyon utazok a Nightwishsel.

Érződik a zenéjükön a 70-es évek gyökerei, ami bennem is megvan.
Tomi: „Igen, persze”. Könnyű vele haladni.

Hozzátennél az interjúhoz valamit?

Rég voltunk már itt. Most kijött az új album, újra turnézunk, itt vagyunk Magyarországon, Budapesten, ami eddig is tetszett. Jó bulik voltak itt. Úgy tűnik, ismét sokan lesznek. Köszönjük és tisztelet minden rajongónak, akik elé kiállhatok a színpadra. Köszönjük, hogy megvártatok – kezdődjön a buli!

Köszönöm az interjút. Remélem jól fogjátok magatokat érezni Budapesten!

Answered by Marco Hietala.

Let’s start with Nightwish’s latest album, Imaginaerum. What are your thoughts on its huge success? Did you have any fears that it wouldn’t be that well accepted by the fans, considering that you slightly changed your style?

I agree with you so that it is quite a great album. It pretty much reflects the band; our personalities, and the whole personality of the band put together. It’s really honest, made with as much integrity as we could. In that way it is a great album. We’re all pleased that it goes down that well. I also think that the integrity and honesty of the things, how it presents us, is one of the reasons why it goes down that well. Then again, compared to Dark Passion Play, I think we had a lot more to be scared at that time [laughs].

Compared to Dark Passion Play, could you point out the main differences? How come the two albums differ so much?

With Dark Passion Play we were already rehearsing and recording the album without knowing who’s going to be singing. That was one of the main differences here. Of course, at that time we also had this burden of proof hanging on our shoulders. We knew that we would have to show the world that the band is not just one face and one voice. We knew that, but we didn’t know would everybody else believe it. Then Anette came along with big shoes to fill, so she was a little bit scared as well. We had a lot of trust in the album; it’s a good one. The pressure was really hard at the time, but we’ve done it! We’ve done the album, we’ve done two years of successful touring, and the shows went down really well.
We could start from kind of a clean slate, after establishing that we’re still here, but with this line-up. We could really start rehearsing, arranging, and doing all that stuff for the album, because we were on a clean slate, fresh mind, and had a lot of really good enthusiasm. From the first rehearsals we knew this was going to be great because of the vibe from the summer camp and the rehearsing that was really great. We had a lot of time off, just fishing, swimming, barbequing at open fire late at night, then playing rock n roll at the same time, a few hours a day, sometimes longer hours, something a little bit less. So, the vibe how we started the whole thing was really great. The way how we started was one of the essentials because that vibe lasted for almost a whole year that we spent recording that album. It was pretty clear at all times that we were doing something that, at least to our own ears and hearts, was feeling really good. That is how to do things in my opinion, and it’s a really great bonus that the people seem to like it as well.

Anette seems to have got a much better grasp of your music with Imaginaerum. What’s your opinion of her input for the two albums?

I think it’s a combination of different things. I think she actually did practice a lot in her free time, and at the times off that we had after Dark Passion Play and the tour. She says so, I believe her, and you can hear it. Also, there’s the fact that when we were arranging and rehearsing the songs we went through all the melodies with kind of a fine comb. Tuomas and I were sitting on this swing at the summer camp with an acoustic guitar saying: “This would go well with that melody; if we keep that high line this long it’s not going to last, we have to drop a few notes here and here, put that kind of a thing there.” We also had the grasp of what the realities of scale that we could work on are.
I do think that the main difference between the vocals, which were also already good on Dark Passion Play, but, to my opinion, pretty, pretty impressive on Imaginaerum, is that the lady, after doing those hard two years, found confidence, and relaxation at the same time while doing the vocals. She found the courage to try out different things, which would come to her naturally. You can really hear that on the album. The courage, the relaxation, and the confidence.

There will also be a movie release this year. How are the works on it progressing?

Well, we got the teaser online now. There should be kind of a longer trailer later on. I don’t know if you’ve seen it.

I have. Yeah, it was kind of short.

Yeah [laughs]. That is one of the essentials of the movie business that we’ve found out. You really need to have good trailers in order to spread the word and get it to different companies and different countries that are responsible for the distribution to the theatres. Before that you don’t actually get to go to the theatres. You would have to be in Hollywood for that, with connections to the companies. That’s not something we really have, although there are some people with connections, but we’re not in that thing. So, we really need good trailers. Those things are going to solve everything. The movie is in its final stages; there’s still CGI work to be done with the backgrounds, and some of the effects. That’s going to take a while, but otherwise the whole thing is pretty much coming to the shape and the length that it is.
I’ve seen the raw edit of the whole film through, without all the special effects. I think that when everything comes into place there’s a chance that when you see the whole movie it will do quite the trick.

How are the movie and the album connected?

Well, the people do have this preconception of the album that it’s some thing of a soundtrack to the movie, which it isn’t. The album is a musical piece, and it’s meant to be listened and read in the lyrics. It’s got some ideas and some atmospheres that are transferred into the movie. The movie itself is actually a full-length drama-fantasy with actors, spoken dialogues, a real storyline, etc. The music that you hear in the movie is going to include around 2-3 songs, which are pretty much like they are on the album. Everything else will be re-scored and edited in order to fit the backgrounds and happenings of the movie. They are different things; they have their own lives, definitely.

How come the band decided to make changes in the style by adding more folk elements?

It’s true that we changed it a bit. I think these elements would have come to the music anyway, because it seems that we all are, or at least Tuomas and I are into kind of having these celtic and folk song roots. We were into that, and then of course into metal. So, the power side of the band will probably not go away ever. That’s going to be the metal side. It’s nice to add things there, jump over the fences where people would like to put us in. The band is something that is, on an ideological level, not meant to be contained. It can’t be, you’ve got to let your imagination flow.

What’s your favourite part of Imaginaerum? Which song do you particularly enjoy playing live?

A song to play live… I think it would probably be the one that we’ve been doing the last in our shows – Last Ride of the Day. That’s such a fast, simple anthem, so in live situations it works really well. I just love to do that song.

When listening to the album, there are favourites all around it. If I think about something from the softer side, it would be Turn Loose the Mermaids, and if we go into the heavier and crazier side, Scaretale is really great for me. That’s nice to do live as well. You don’t have to be so serious about it, but you can still get into this mad ringmaster mood. It’s funny, it moves from just playing the song to a little bit on the side of a theatre as well.

What’s behind the song that you wrote, The Crow, the Owl, and the Dove?

It was just an acoustic piece; the first riff and the melody over it was the first thing that I came up with when I was fiddling around with the acoustic at home. I had a feeling that it would make a nice song. I just played it to Tuomas, and he told me to keep it for Nightwish. There’s been this rumour going on that it could have been a terrible song, but no. I knew immediately that I had to show this one to Tuomas, because it seemed to fit well. I just had to go over the thing a few times at home in order to come up with the verses and the melodies. Then I demoed the raw version for him, gave it to him, and he started to write some lyrics there. For those I was really pleased. The serenity of the lyrics and that kind of a song fit really well together. I knew that he got it.

So you really get each other?

Sometimes [laughs]. Hopefully often. I mean, with people it’s like that. You can’t get them always. But I think that we have that much of a good chemistry here that we do get what we want often.

What are your future plans? Perhaps doing more re-recordings of the old songs with the new vocals, like you did with Planet Hell?

If we talk about the movie, it has a release date. It should be out in August, but of course I cannot really guarantee that. That much I know from music and movie business. There are a lot of deadlines, which are meant to be broken.
As for re-recording, Planet Hell was a live situation, from the rehearsals. We didn’t really go into the studio. It was a multi track thing. It’s pretty easy these days to just hook your laptop into a console and take a multi track recording. We’ve taken quite a lot from the shows as well. Janne, my keyboard player friend from Tarot, and I just did the mixing in about one day and that was it. We have no plans for official DVDs or recordings of old songs with the new line-up. Nothing like that.
We’ve talked about quite a lot of things that we could do. The thing is that we’re touring right now, the album is out, so nobody in the band wants to be too tied into business, or think about what’s going to be happening. We’re trying to keep this as something that we enjoy doing. After we get back home there’s going to be about three weeks before we start with the festival season. That will give us time to get back to the business side. For now I think we’ll just be happy to be here, play the shows. Finally put our shorts on for the first time in the spring [laughs].

Did you get a chance to enjoy the city as well?

Yeah. It was great yesterday when we got to go to the city and walk around the whole day. I bought myself a bag for my poker dice money, because we play a lot of poker dice in the back room, so this is a great place to hold your coins in. [laughs]
It’s not our first time in Budapest, but we haven’t had that much off days before, so there hasn’t been that much time to go around and see places. Yesterday we finally had that. We came from the Vienna show straight overnight. So, yesterday we were at the hotel around 10 or 11, got booked in, then a little day nap, and then off everybody went into the city. I like it a lot. I also ate myself almost to death [laughs]. I ate garlic pork chops. I love garlic, spicy works for me.

How has the rest of the tour been going?

We’ve done a lot of really good shows, seen quite a few thousands of really nice people at the shows as well. It’s been good, and I have no complaints. This has somehow been an exceptionally relaxed and nice tour as how the days rolled by. We spend them just hanging around, having a cup of tea, doing sound checks and talking and playing a lot of poker dice. We pretty much spend our off time relaxing. If I was at home I’d probably be exercising a little bit, but in here there’s quite plenty of nights that you run around like half a marathon, almost every night. So, you don’t really need to do that.

What about your solo projects, like Tarot, at the moment? Are they in the background because of your involvement with Nightwish now?

The band, Tarot, is pretty much in the state of hibernation. I’m travelling a lot with Nightwish now. Of course, I’ve got some time off and there’s bound to be at least one occasion in Finland that we will play at a festival in my hometown where both bands are going to be playing. It’s going to be easy. Tarot boys are already there, and I’m going to be there with Nightwish, so we’ll easily do a couple of shows there. I don’t know the situation right now, if there’s going to be any more festivals that we’ll do with the Tarot boys as well, but it’s possible.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the fame and success Nightwish brought you?

I think it’s one of those things that you would actually actively have to try to remember a lot of time. Because it seems that people are really putting you on a pedestal. And we’re just a bunch of Finnish country boys, joined by one Swedish girl, and one British pipe player. It’s a fact that we are human, but we have this exceptional chance of really using our imagination and our feelings to do things that we really want to and live on it. It really is a privilege. You can be proud of the things you achieve, but at the same time it doesn’t exclude the fact that you also need to be humble in order to stay sane. There are people who get his kind of thing going when they’re in their 20s, and I think it would have messed up our minds really hard.

I had the chance to interview Amorphis in January, and the guys spoke really highly of you and your collaboration. What’s your side of the story?

My side of the story is that I can probably speak highly enough of the guys as well, because I really like their band. They’ve got this really old school type of groove with the band, even though they go with the heavy growling. They also have these 70s roots, like I do. Their music sounds pretty live, even though they’re at the studio.
Working with Tomi in the studio is pretty easy, because he’s a smart guy. He’s got a lot of vocal versatility, as you can hear on the albums. It’s really easy to go over the lyrics and timings and everything. I say: “We need to change this place because it would have to fit into these frames, within this song.” And then he goes: “Yeah, yeah, we’ve got to do that.” Me: “Would that work? It sounds a bit cheesy. How about this?” Tomi: “Yeah, yeah, that would work.” It’s a good combination of doing things because we get things done.

Would you like to add anything else?

The great thing here is that we’ve been away for some years. And now we’ve got the album out, we’ve been touring again, and now we’re here in Hungary, in Budapest, which I’ve enjoyed before. We’ve had really good shows here. It seems that there’s going to be quite a lot of people here in this big hall. Thanks, and all the respect that I can give to all the fans in Hungary as well. Thanks for the waiting, here we are – let’s do a hell of a show!

Thank you for the interview. I wish you a great time tonight in Budapest!
