October Falls Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

Nyugalomban és sötétségben hallgatom a zenédet napok óta. – Minő atmoszféra árad a zenéből.

A dalok lényegében címnélküliek. Miért is lett ilyen egyszerű címűk, hogy I, II, III, IV?

ENGLISH VERSION

For a lot of days now I listen to your music in darkness, in relaxed mood. What a fantastic atmosphere comes from your music! What do you think, what makes your music special?

Everything I’ve done through these years has been highly emotional or at least they were meant to be. I’ve always tried to capture something that the listener could enjoy in solitude and silence; none of the releases were made for masses or a bigger audience. I think the main goal for music and other arts are to satisfy the individual, not the masses. And actually, even that statement is over the top, as actually the main reason of any form of art should be the satisfying the artist itself, not the others. I’ve always done something that I personally enjoy and something I would enjoy even if someone else would have done it.

October Falls formed in 2001, then in 2003 came the first single, and finally in 2005 your full-length album is released. What do you think of your older creations nowadays? Tell me about the how the music has changed to its recent form?

Although the first two official releases, Tuoni and Marras, were all acoustic, I still think they manage to capture the pure essence of October Falls, as it was never about the fact how the music was performed, but about the atmosphere the music created. And although I strongly feel like the latest all acoustic release, Sarastus and the latest harsher release, The Womb of Primordial Nature are better than the earlier releases, I have no regrets and I can stand strongly behind everything I’ve released. In any other case, I think the right solution would have been quitting everything, as you cannot deny or erase your past, it’s always a part of you and I’m proud of the past of October Falls.

Let’s speak about the new album, because it’s awesome! Where did you record the material, and how did you manage to create such a dark atmosphere?

Good to hear that you’ve enjoyed the new material. It was basically captured in four different places, none of them being a real studio, but more involved with the right atmosphere for the recordings. I think the darkest and most uttermost parts were recorded sole by me in solitude without any other people. I think those parts created the final atmosphere for the record. If going into details, drums were recorded in H.Sorvali’s (Moonsorrow) studio and performed by M.Tarvonen (Moonsorrow), some acoustic parts were captured at my friend T.Hakala and bass, distorted guitars and vocals were captured by V.Metsola, who also performed the bass on the record. Most of the acoustic guitars and all the sound and vocal-effects were captured by me at my own lair, where I also mixed everything before T.Stjerna (Necromorbus) mastered the whole thing.

Primordial’s Journey’ End album came in my mind when I listened to your songs, but of course that’s a little bit different. Who are the bands that you can resemble your music, and how can you describe your creation?

If I only think bands that have inspired me through these years, I have to name bands like old Ulver, Tenhi, Drudkh, Primordial, old Hades, old Behemoth etc, the list is basically endless. I think all these bands can be heard on most of OF-albums. More are more obvious than others, but they’ve all inspirited me a lot.

The songs have no titles, why?

All the songs in the latest release are based on a same theme, so I had no reason to name them separately. It’s a common way for me to work, as most of the releases don’t have any other titles on the songs, only the name of the release and the number of the current piece.

The acoustic parts are amazing, and have an excellent mood. Have you got plans for releasing an acoustic full-length record?

Actually October Falls has so far released one all acoustic full-length, Marras, and two all acoustic mini-releases, Tuoni and Sarastus, so I’ve already done that. Basically when other bands have made harsher albums and then release some all acoustic music, I’ve done vice versa, as I’ve mostly released all acoustic music, but at certain points I’ve had an urge to perform the new material in harsher form and that’s how „The Streams of the End” and „The Womb of Primordial Nature” became reality. What comes to the future, most likely next release will again be harsher, but also all acoustic releases will take form at some point.

In October Falls music there are chilling beautiful sounds, and furious, evil depths too. I wonder if your music is some kind of reflection of your life.

This leads to multi-dimensional questions, but to make it simple, I think it’s a good reflection of who or what I am personally. But I must add that although the music reflects my feelings, it also tries to capture the true essence of nature, which has at least these two faces, the beautiful and the cruel one without mercy. It’s more like you can see something that you first adore and in a blink of an eye, that same thing is attacking you.

Please tell me about your childhood, and your very early days in music. When did it all started, and how did you get in connection with music?

I’m not too keen to reveal too much of myself, but I can say, that I lived my childhood in nature instead of the more urban environment I’ve forced to live these days and I also hope, that at certain point I have a possibility to return to my roots. Younger I was never too interested about music, our local teaching system managed to kill that urge for a long time, but at some point I started to feel an urge to make something on my own. Certain member of my family was quite involved in harsher scene, so in that way I got more involved and interested about it and I think I can say that it was the point where everything actually started. Of course, this so called „harsher scene” was not that harsh inn today’s standards, but it was an introduction to harsher material.

Finland is very mystical, and has many beautiful places in wonderful natural surroundings. Please tell me something about your favourite places!

I must say that I love this land and I would never move away from here. These soils are filled with amazing landscapes, places like Lapland or Aulanko for example are something beyond any words and I’d also count them to be my personal favourites on these lands. But then again, at certain point, your local lake and the right atmosphere can overtake everything else you’ve ever seen of experienced. Actually I have no urge to go through the places the men have never touched before, but I’m more interested about the soils my ancestors has been travelling or living.

I wish you the best that can happen to you, I hope we’ll meet some day!

Kiitos, all the best to you, our paths shall meet at some point.
