Sziasztok! Üdvözlet Magyarországról! Rég lehetett rólatok hallani, és mikor újra felbukkantok egyből egy új lemezzel a tarsolyotokban. Szerintem egy nagyon erős, ugyanakkor szikár album sikeredett. Megerősödött bennem az érzés, hogy nem csak a One Man Army-val, hanem a The Undead Quartettel is számolni kell. Milyen fogadtatásra talált a Dark Epic? Elégedettek vagytok a visszajelzésekkel?
Üdv neked is! Nos egyrészt a visszajelzések nagyon pozitívak és meg vagyunk elégedve, másrészt elkészítettük a legjobb felvételünk, a legfantasztikusabb Army albumot, így a saját szemünkben győztesek vagyunk, függetlenül attól, hogy a média és a rajongók hogyan reagálnak, de szerencsére rengeteg ember ugyanazt gondolja, mint mi.
A csapat megalakulása óta szinte egy lendületre hoztátok ki a lemezeket, de most három évet kellett várni rá. Mivel telt ez a pár év?
Az eltűnésünk egyik oka az volt, hogy meg kellett találnunk Mikael utódját, aki 2009-ben elhagyta a csapatot. Mi alapvetően egy új srácot kerestünk, miközben koncerteket foglaltunk le egy session zenésszel, így az egész folyamat, hogy új tagot találjunk, hónapokat csúszott. Ezt mi könnyen vettük és volt idő feltölteni az elemeket, de a nagyon komoly dalírás, úgy gondolom, 2009 őszén kezdődött el. És ekkor azzal töltöttük az időnket, hogy megtaláljuk a legmegfelelőbb dalokat a lemezre, mindenféle időkorlát nélkül, és ezt valóban mutatja a végeredmény. Igazán keményen dolgoztunk, hogy egy jó albummal álljunk elő, ez tovább tartott az elképzeltnél, de érdemes volt rá várni. A következő lemez is sokáig fog készülni.
Szerintem az előző lemezetek, a Grim Tales, összességében a legdallamosabb kiadványotok. A Dark Epiken direkt törekedtetek, hogy nehezebben befogadható, nem annyira „slágeres” anyagot készítsetek?
Igen, határozottan meg akartunk változtatni egy csomó dolgot, úgy, hogy a One Man Army alapjai ne sérüljenek. Azokat az unalmas 3-4 perces dalokat, amikről már 3 másodperc után mindent tudhatsz. Ezúttal több meglepetésre volt mód, így a hallgatónak ébernek és figyelmesnek kell lennie, ha nem akar lemaradni valamiről és mi több nyers erőt is szerettünk volna, némi groove-val és számos új megközelítés az új sráctól, Jonas Blom-tól jött. Csomó új és friss ötlet tett le az asztalra. Mi valóban nem akarjuk ugyanazt a dolgot újra és újra.
A One Man Army stílusa az első lemeztől fogva egységes irányt mutat. Ezt támogatta a lemezborítók koncepciója is. De az új borító már messziről kilóg a sorból. Meg kell mondjam, szerintem a legjobb a sorban. Olyan, mint egy filmplakát. Ez azt jelenti, hogy a lemezt összefogja valami történet? Mesélnél a dalokról?
Az alapvető oka a lemezborító stílusának megváltozásának egyszerű volt, fárasztó volt újra és újra ugyanazt a koncepciót használni. Meg akartam szabadulni attól az érzéstől, amit az Iron Maiden és Motörhead ad, azzal, hogy a kabalájukat minden borítón használják. Ez nem igazán az, amiről ez a banda szól, de szeretem a „General Grim” lemezeit, és nem akartunk örökre beleragadni ebbe. Igen, van mozi hangulat az új borítón. Nagyon befolyásolt ez az új nyers érzés, hogy mindössze néhány szín fordul elő, így adtam át az ötleteimet és a lemezcímet a Killustrationsos Bjoern-nek és ő tette a többit, majd megkaptuk a legjobb és legmegfelelőbb Army borítót.
Visszatérve a borítóra, nekem első pillantásra a színvilág az új Danzig lemez, Deth Red Sabaoth, borítóját juttatja eszembe, ez véletlen, vagy esetleg ugyanaz a művész készítette?
Nem tudom ki készítette a Danzig dolgokat, de ha találsz hasonlóságot, akkor az csak véletlen egybeesés.
Milyen módszer alapján folyt a dalírás? Már kész koncepcióval vonultatok stúdióba, vagy az utolsó pillanatok adnak ihletet? Kik a fő dalszerzők?
A legtöbb zenét az új fiú, Jonas Blom írta. Megbeszéltük, az írási folyamat elején, hogy mit akarunk ettől a lemeztől és eldöntöttük, hogy valami mást csinálunk, mint eddig. Nem annyira átlátható dalokat. Hosszabb darabok, több riffel és így tovább. Több death metal kevesebb dallam. De a daloknak magukért kell beszélniük. Nem erőltettünk különböző dalírási stílusokat. Mi csak írtunk, ahogy bírtunk, ehhez szoktunk hozzá, csak közben fejben tartottuk az új megközelítést és a végén vettük a 9 legjobban összeillő dalt. 14 nóta közül választhattuk ki.
Már a lemez megjelenése előtt elkészült egy videoklip a Skeleton of Rose Hall című dalotokhoz. Miért pont ezt választottátok?
Ez az a dal, ami a legjobban képviseli a lemezt. Ennek van egy epikus jellege és egy csomó csavar a nótában, azok az érzések, amiket a dalírás elején kerestünk. Nekünk más ötleteink voltak, de a rendező, Rune Foss szerette ezt a dalt és mi hittünk az ő megérzésében, így ez is egyik oka, hogy ezt a dalt választottuk klipnótának.
Milyen volt a forgatás? Mennyi beleszólásotok volt a klip történetébe?
Rögzítettük az előadás képeit a próbateremben és minden történeti elemet Rune háznál és kinn az erdőben filmeztünk. Élveztük a videó készítést, lehetőségem volt eljátszani egy láncfűrészes totál pszichopatát, haha. Kicsit eltértünk a történettel a dalszövegtől, hogy a videó még megkapóbb legyen a szereplésemmel, de az eredeti történet Annie Palmerről szól, aki gyakorlott volt a vuduban és a fekete mágiában. Annie egy olyan férfi felesége volt, akinek ültetvényei voltak 2000 rabszolgával, és az asszony kínzott és meggyilkolt sokakat közülük, beleértve a férjét is. Egy brutális szadista szipirtyó volt, és a videóban visszatér a pokolból és irányítása alatt tart és közben terrorizál engem egy vudu babán keresztül. Szar ügy 🙂
Összeállt már a turnéprogram? Kinek a társaságában fogtok játszani?
Nem még nincsenek ilyen terveink, de nagyon reméljük, hogy nemsokára élőben is játszhatunk. Reménykedünk pár fesztiválban és talán egy őszi turnéban. Majd az idő eldönti.
2007 októberében a Gorefest társaságában játszottatok Magyarországon is. Vannak emlékeitek az országról, a fellépésről?
Igen, van pár szép emlék onnan. Talán nem a legjobb turné volt, de különösen jó volt fellépni Magyarországon, szívesen megismételnénk, mert ritkán járunk arra, és a turnék is elkerülik.
Elkerülhetetlen, hogy Lindstrandtól kérdezek a The Crown kapcsán. Mikor újjáalakult a The Crown, úgy tudom nem volt megkeresés a csapat részéről, hogy esetleg visszamennél-e énekesnek. Fájó pont ez? Van esetleg valami feszültség a régi társak és közted? Ha felkértek volna vállaltad volna az énekesi posztot? Amúgy hogy tetszik az új lemezük?
Megkértek, hogy csatlakozzam hozzájuk, mikor a Grim Tales promociójáról tértem vissza 2008-ban. Meghallgattam a dalokat, de eldöntöttem nem megyek vissza, mert rengeteg dolgot kellett tennem az One Man Army-val. Egyszerűen nem volt időm, hogy két csapatban legyek frontember. De egyáltalán nincs harag. Még barátok vagyunk és igazán örülök, hogy újra játszanak és örömüket lelik az új gyilkos hangú énekesben. Csak egyszer hallottam a teljes Doomsday Kinget, de nagyon élvezetesnek találtam. Minden bizonnyal egy erős lemez, de a csapat sosem fog jobb lemezt rögzíteni, mint a Deathrace King 🙂
Zenélés mellett még mivel foglalkoztok? Dolgoztok is mellette? Ha igen merre? Marad időtök kikapcsolódásra? Családra?
Igen, van egy másik állásom is, mint biztonsági őr, mert attól, hogy játszol egy death metal zenekarban, még nem tudod kifizetni a számláidat, hacsak nem vagy igazán nagy vagy nem adsz 300 koncertet évente és ez nem az, amire hajlandó vagyok. Van elég időm, hogy a zene mellett azt tegyek, amit szeretek. A barátnőm és én épp vettünk egy kutyát, aki elveszi a legtöbb időnket, és ezen kívül sok filmet és tv sorozatot nézek. Szóval nagyon elégedett vagyok az életemmel. Ebben a pillanatban semmit nem változtatnék rajta.

Hi there, greetings from Hungary! We haven’t heard from you for quite a while, but when you returned, you came out with a brand new album. In my opinion its a really intense one, and I realized that we need to keep count of The Undead Quartet as well, not just the One Man Army. What was the reception of the Dark Epic like? Are you satisfied with the feedback?
Hi! Greetings to you too. Well, mainly the feedback has been very positive so we are quite satisfied with that but on the other hand, we have done our best to record the most awesome Armyalbum so far so in our eyes we are winner regardless on how the media and the fans react but luckily a lot of people think the same as us.
Since the formation of the band you published the albums in full fling, but the last one took a lot more time. What have you been doing in the past three years?
One of the reasons was that we had to get a replacement for Mikael who left in 2009. And we basically searched for a new guy at the same time we were booking shows with a sessionguy so the whole process with a new member was postponed a couple of months. And we also took it more easy and recharged our batteries but the writing session started pretty serious around fall of 2009 I think. And then we took our time to find the most suitable songs for this album without any time limit and this really shows on the final product. We have really worked hard to get a good album out and it took longer than expected but it was worth the wait. The next album will take just as long.
Your previous album, the Grim Tales was the most melodic one. Did you try to write the songs of Dark Epic less easily receiveable?
Yeah, we definitely wanted to change a lot of stuff but at the same time keep the basics of One man army. I was kind of tired of the typical 3-4 minutesongs that you would know already after 3 seconds. This time there´s way more surprises that needs the listener to stay alert and sharp so he won´t miss anything and we also wanted it to be more raw but with a groove and a lot of this new approach comes from the new guy Jonas Blom. A lot of new and fresh ideas has been brought onto the table. We really don´t care about doing the same stuff over and over again.
The style of One Man Army shows a standard since the first album, and it was also supported by the cover art. But the new cover art is far the best! It’s like a movie poster. Does it mean, that the album is clamped by a story? Could you please tell us a few words about the songs?
The basic reason for changing the artwork style was simply cause I was kind of tired of the whole concept that was used over and over again. I wanted to get rid of that feeling you get with Iron Maiden and Motorhead that uses their mascot on all artwork. That´s not really what this band is about but I do like the General Grim albums as well but we didn´t wanna get stuck with that forever. Yeah, there´s a movie feeling on the new cover. I was very influenced with this raw feeling that occur with just a few colours so I handed over my ideas together with the title to Bjoern of Killustrations and he kinda did the rest and it became the best and most suitable Army cover so far.
Returning to the cover art, for the first sight the colours remind me of the new Danzig album, the Deth Red Sabaoth’s cover. Is it a coincidence or is the artist the same?
I don´t know who did the Danzig stuff but if you find similarities it´s just a coincident.
What was the method while writing the songs? Did you have a concept before going to the studio, or usually the last moments give you inspiration? Who are the songwriters?
Most of the music was written by the new guy Jonas Blom. We discussed how we wanted this album to be in the beginning of the writing process and we all agreed on doing something different. Not so obvious songs. Longer cuts with more riffs and so on. More death metal with less melodies. But the songs had to speak for themselves. We didn´t force any different writing styles. We just wrote as much as possible the way we were used to but with a little new approach in mind and then in the end we just picked up the best 9 songs that would fit together. We had like 14 songs to chose from.
The clip of Skelton of Rose Hall came up before the appearance of the new album. Why did you choose this song?
This is a song that represent the album in a very good sense. It has this kind of epic feeling to it and it has a lot of hooks and twists which is the feeling we were looking for when the whole process started. But we had a couple of different ideas but the director Rune Foss loved this song and we believed in his vision so that´s also one of the reasons for choosing this clip.
What was the video shooting like? How much influence did you have on the story of the clip?
We recorded the performance shots at the rehearsalroom and all the story shots were filmed at Runes house and outside in the forest. We had a blast doing the video and I had the chance to play a total psycho with a chainsaw, haha. We kinda changed the story a bit from the lyrics to make the video more cool with me having the lead role but the original story is about the legend of Annie Palmer who practiced voodoo and black magic. She was married to a guy that owned a plantation with 2000 slaves and she was torturing and murdering a lot of them including her own husband. She was a brutal and sadistic bitch and in the video she has come back from hell and she is controlling and terrorizing me through a voodoo doll. Nasty shit:)
Do you already have a tour plan? Who are you going to play with?
No, we don´t have such plans yet but we really hope to play live real soon. Hopefully some festivals and then maybe a tour in the fall. Time will tell.
In October, 2007 you played together with Gorefest in Hungary. Do you have any memories of the country and the concert?
Yeah, we have some great memories there. Maybe not the best tour we´ve done but it was definitely cool to play Hungary and that is something we wanna do again cause we haven´t been there that much and not that many tours come there.
It is inevitable to ask about The Crown from Johan Lindstrand. When The Crown reunited, there was no contact from the band, whether you would like to return as a singer. Does it hurt you? Is there any tension between you and the band? If they had asked you to return, would you have accepted the proposal? How do you like their new album by the way?
I was asked to join them when I was doing promotion for Grim Tales back in 2008. I listened to the songs but then I decided not to join cause I had a lot of things going with One man army. I simply didn´t have time to be a frontman in 2 bands. But there´s no hard feelings at all. We´re all still friends and I´m truly happy that they are playing again and having fun with a new killer vocalist. I´ve heard the complete Doomsday king only once but I find it pretty amusing. It´s definitely a solid album but the band will never record anything better than Deathrace king:)
What do you do besides music? Do you have another job as well? Do you have any time left to relax, and spend time with your families?
Yeah, I have another job as a security guard cause playing in a death metal band doesn´t really pay your bills if you´re not really big or you play shows 300 dates/year and that´s not something I´m willing to do. I have plenty of time to do what I love besides the music. Me and my girlfriend has just bought a dog which takes a lot of time and then I watch a lot of movies and tv series. So I´m quite satisfied with my life. Don´t wanna change anything at the moment.
