Pestilence Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

A kérdésekre Patrick Mameli válaszolt.

Hello, Patrick!

Voltak más holland bandák a színtéren, akiket példaként állítottatok magatok elé?

A Hatred Within című dal felkerült a Teutonic Invasion 2 című válogatásra. Kifejezetten ezen lemez kedvéért írtátok a nótát?

Mit csináltál miután a Pestilence a kilencvenes évek közepén feloszlott?

Voltak kétségeid a visszatérés kapcsán?

Szerintem a Resurrection Macabreben minden rajongó megtalálja a neki tetszőt.

Szerintem a Pestilence gond nélkül felül fogja múlni a Doctrinet.

Jövőre játszani fogunk a 70000 Tons of Metal fesztiválon is, aztán lesz egy dél-amerikai turnénk is.

Answers by Patrick Mameli.

Hello, Patrick! First, if you don’t mind, let’s jump a little bit back into the past. When and how did the band form and was it hard to find people who were committed and enthusiastic enough for a metal band in the Netherlands back then?

I started playing the guitar when I was 4, so I didn’t really know about metal, but when I started to want to play in a band I began to find people in my vicinity and my neighbourhood. And then it was already very difficult to play a little bit more heavy stuff so we ended up playing at school parties, playin’ Black Sabbath songs or stuff from Michael Schenker Group or something that was a little bit more heavy like kiss and stuff like that. So when I started to create Pestilence and started recording demos it was like this: One of my friends, Marco Foddis, he didn’t have a drum kit and I needed a drummer so we got him a drum kit and told him, “Here you are, you’re a drummer now!” That’s kinda how it went. When we met Martin van Drunen, he couldn’t play the bass and we thought if Jeff Becerra from Possessed can sing and play the bass, he should do that too. It was more like improvising and trying to get the point across. Then we got this guy from Germany, Randy Meinhard, and we just tried to do something and he knew this guy from a record label and then we just tried out for them and well, the rest is history.

Were there other bands in The Netherlands, in the scene around you that you saw as examples for your band or that you’ve seen as something that you’ve wanted to do?

No, not at all, because we are the forefathers of death metal in Holland. We were right there from the beginning and I always thought very strongly about not sounding like anybody else. I never listened to those Dutch bands, I mean, I knew that they were there but we focused very much more on the American, Floridan death metal scene, because I thought there was more talent and musicianship over there. I thought that we had to be trying to keep up with those guys.

Did you know other bands as friends? Were there other bands that started around the time that you started?

Well, you know, Holland is a small country. We started first and then some other bands came along, but there was always jealousy and animosity between the bands. It was not such a great time for musicians to be friends, because everybody wanted to be the best, trying to give the other bands no soundcheck or bad soundcheck or anything to make you sound better and the rest sound shit. At that point, we didn’t really hang out with too many of those other bands because everybody was doing their own thing really.

In the beginning, you recorded two demos. What’s your opinion about them now?

Well, now I think that they’re terrible. They don’t represent my musicianship now. Although I understand that those demos got us a record deal and made us what we are now, but that’s pretty much the same as when you let’s say start practicing soccer. When you get older you understand better how to play soccer, how to drive a car or a bike or anything. You get better and better and looking back it’s the same as looking back at your old school pictures when you had that funny hair. You don’t even realize it’s you. It’s something that you’ve done when you were really, really young. It’s great that we’ve got this opportunity, but those demos are not really representative of our musical capabilities.

The song Hatred Within was featured on the compilation Teutonic Invasion 2. Was it written exclusively for that album?

Well yeah, we could record a song exclusively for that album. And even that song didn’t really sound like Pestilence, it was just like an accumulation of the bands that we really liked listening to, like Slayer, Possessed and Death, that were talented in creating song structures. But that song got us noticed with Roadrunner. Later on we got a record deal with Roadrunner and then we recorded our first album and up to spheres we stayed with them. After that we broke up with them

Were you content with this song and the two demos back then when you wrote them or did you think that you’re gonna be way better than this but this is just a step?

I thought I could go beyond that, but honestly, I didn’t think that the other guys were capable of keeping up with me. And I’m sorry to say that, I’m not trying to be an asshole, but you know, it’s difficult to work with people who don’t have that musical ability to create and lift up the music to a higher plane. That’s difficult. And I understand that there are a lot of people who swear with Martin van Drunen or Marco Foddis or Randy Meinhard because they grew up on that album, but where are these guys now? Except for Martin, who’s doing Hail of Bullets and Asphyx, but Marco and Randy aren’t doing anything with music, so it’s difficult get out of that box.

The album that finally got you out of that box was Consuming Impulse. Do you agree with this?

Well yeah, on Consuming Impulse the songs are still a little bit like Death or Possessed and we liked to listen to those bands, but we put this effect on the guitars and it made it sound really dirty. And Martin’s vocals… I had to practice a lot with him to get to what he’s doing now. And the whole combination sounded great. We were right there from the beginning when the whole death metal scene exploded. We were like the European answer to Death. That was the first album that got us noticed worldwide.

Just after the release of this album, Martin left the band, why?

Well, he didn’t leave the band, I kicked him out. You could ask everybody that was in the band, you could ask Marco, although you can never talk to him, but you could ask him, you could ask a number of people, that Martin was not such a professional guy. He’s been always drinking a lot and he had an alcohol problem and I could not cope with that, because he would get really stupid drunk and then you couldn’t even talk to the guy anymore. And I didn’t want to bother with him anymore, so I kicked him out of the band right after the US tour with Death and Carcass. And you know, he’s been in a number of bands and he’s been always in beer and alcohol which is okay, he can do whatever he wants to do, but I even believe that’s why he got kicked out of Bolt Thrower and again, he’s probably gonna tell you something else but that’s my honest opinion and I just wanna work with people that wanna lift up Pestilence to a new level.

After Pestilence split up in the mid-nineties, what did you do? I think that you must have been really unhappy about the splitting up, what did you do after that?

Well, I was not really unhappy with the split-up, actually, I was very happy ‘cause we got to do Spheres, which now is a cult album. The metal fans didn’t get it, people said they don’t get it, but it’s nothing to do with not getting it. I mean, now looking back to it, we don’t think that it was a good step to come up with an album like that after Testimony of the Ancients. I mean, if we would have recorded Resurrection Macabre after that one, Pestilence would have been a real good band. We didn’t have the musical capabilities that we have now and we just wanted to piss off the record company Roadracer, because they were not supporting us in any form and they were signing all kinds of bands, like black metal bands and they were flooding the scene with bands. Not taking care of Pestilence anymore. It was not such a good contract, and anyone that says that Pestilence reformed because of the money says bullshit, because in death metal you don’t make so much money. Heavy metal bands make a lot of money and the rest of the subgenres don’t make a lot. So we just split up and now I support my music with my regular job. I’m looking at it as a hobby, because it’s so much better for me this way. Because I would feel so much pressure if the fans didn’t like my music or the lineup or anything that I do in music. A huge weight just got off of my back ‘cause I just could be myself for a little while.

But then again you have returned, so what was the reason? If you were happy when the split-up happened, then what happened inside you when you decided that you wanted to return to Pestilence?

Well, first of all, only creative people understand that if you do anything that is creating, if you stop doing that, eventually you will have a hunger again and your battery will be reloaded again to make things, and my thing is music. For years I didn’t play or touch my guitar and now I just had that hunger again. One day I was listening to, I think it was Hate Eternal. And I was “What the fuck is this music? You know, Erik Rutan, he’s playin’ nice riffs. Holy shit, this drummer. Okay, okay it’s time for me to come back to the scene and see if somebody still remembers Pestilence.”

Did you have doubts about coming back?

Oh yeah, because that’s been said about me or the band on blabbermouth for example. This is just something that a band always has to deal with. There’s always criticism, always a bunch of people that talk crap or negative things about you or the band just to feel better about themselves, and nothing really has changed in the music scene, there’s still lots of animosity between bands, there’s still a lot of jealousy and people are not willing to help, thinking “This is me, this is my little world.” This is like the same thing I got away from twenty years ago and now, it seems nothing really has changed in the scene. It’s a very conservative scene, it’s still those guys with the long hair. And finally people that have no hair can be a metalhead as well. You know how many years it took people to achieve that? I remember first time when Kerry King came onstage with a bald head and everyone was thinking “What the fuck is going on with this guy?” This is the typical standard metalhead and Pestilence has never been a standard metal band. So it has always been subjected to criticism and you just have to take that as a thing that is real and you just have to deal with that, but nowadays with the Internet it’s getting out of control. Anybody can get a fucking nickname and post on those forums and talk crap about people they don’t even know.

How did the new label, Mascot, come into the picture?

The label owner for Mascot Records is still working for Roadrunner, and he is a metal guy and when he started his own record company, I contacted him and he wanted to do an album with me, and we did C-187, which was not such a great success. Too bad, because I really love that album still. And the death metal community thought it was crap and that’s when I thought “Oh my god, here we go again.” I thought that they would have forgotten about me and I should pursue another musical career. They said it’s not heavy enough and they disencouraged me to continue and then Ed, the label owner for Mascot Records just told me “Why don’t you do another Pestilence album?” I was like “I don’t know, man, if I do that I wanna have the right people around me, who had contact with Pestilence in the past.” And of course, I couldn’t get Marco Foddis, because he sold his drumkit and he wasn’t interested in metal anymore, he’s a driving instructor. So I contacted Tony Choy, who drummed on Testimony of the Ancients and he was really happy to do that and I checked on Peter Wildoer as well, and we came back with Resurrection Macabre.

And how did the fans react to that one?

Well, I guess you know, how the people reacted to that one. You know, you disappear for 15 years, of course they have high expectations, everybody is thinking about Consuming Impulse or Testimony of the Ancients and when you give them something else, they don’t like it. It was too much on the safe side, too brutal for Pestilence, didn’t have too much melody. You get all kinds of comments on how something is and then I realised you just have to make yourself happy and if you’re happy, you will put that happiness to the people. So I just make music to please myself and to see how far I can push my boundaries and the band’s boundaries and I’m working with the musicians that I choose. I think you have something for all kinds of fans in Resurrection Macabre.

When did you start writing songs for Doctrine?

I started to think that I didn’t have that band feeling that four guys are working on a mutual project. So that’s when I figured I nedded an all-Dutch group. I started to think about the opening act for the Resurrection Macabre European tour, when Yuma van Ekelen from New Dominion and Brutus came into my mind and I thought that this guy was such a great drummer and Patrick Uterwijk was still in the band, and I met Jeroen Paul Thesseling at Brutal Assault and we started thinking about working together again, since he did Spheres. So again, I had people who worked with Pestilence before. And it turned out really great and this is such a band effort, so it’s way more of a band feeling and you can make way better music this way.

Jeroen is also a member of Obscura. Does this have a negative effect on his work in Pestilence or does he have less time on his hands?

Honestly, you should speak to the guys from Obscura about this. He’s been doing a lot of shows with Pestilence and he hasn’t played in a while with Obscura. So I don’t really know what’s going on there and you should ask Jeroen about it. I just asked him if he has time to do this and he said yes, I don’t know what’s up with Obscura, but everything’s okay, I guess.

What do you think is the greatest difference and similarity musically between Resurrection Macabre and Doctrine?

I think that Doctrine is such a strong album, because it has all the typical styles that we used, so we took those on Consuming Impulse, Testimony of the Ancients and Spheres and put them into one thing. So it’s about keeping the Pestilence style. I’m so excited that now we’re using an eight-string guitar. Hopefully we can keep on continuing in this direction. Doctrine is the best Pestilence album, because you know, we’re heavier, lower, more brutal , the voices are crazier than ever. This tops everything that we’ve done before and we’re so happy with that. This is such a great band effort. Another highlight was that in Holland we could support Slayer for two shows, which is something phenomenal for us that gives us the idea that people finally see this band for what it is and that we’re trying to make innovative music and open up for such a big band like Slayer.

Do you think that you will be able to even top this album?

Oh yeah, definitely. As we are working more and more, and probably the next album will have a different record label, but I can’t name them right now. We’re talking with parties right now. I think that we are going in a direction that puts us above Doctrine because we’re getting to know each other as musicians and we will probably record our next album in our own studio, so we’ll have more time to get our point across and make sure that we come up with the best music ever. And I think that Pestilence can top this album without a problem. I already have a bunch of ideas in which the leads and the vocals are so crazy that I can’t wait to record this new stuff.

What are your short-term plans for this year? Will you have headlining tours?

We will do headlining shows, yeah. We just did a co-headlining show in Germany, we do some festivals in Czech Republic, we did a stop in Spain, Portugal and Italy, so we’ve done a bunch of gigs already and there’s more to come, so we wanna go to St. Petersburg, Iceland again, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, when everything is back okay over there. We gonna do this 70000 Tons of Metal gig next year, then we gonna do a South-American tour. But we don’t wanna play too much, we wanna keep it interesting and just not play every venue all the time.

Okay, thank you very much for your time and let’s hope to see you on tour somewhere in the world.

Yeah, that would be awesome. Thank you so much for your interest and for your time and hopefully you could make it to some gig. Thank you very much man, take care!
