A Sepultura kiváló szombathelyi koncertje előtt adódott lehetőségem, hogy egy szűk negyed órában interjút készíthessek a zenekar frontemberével, Derrick Greennel. Sajnos a szűkre szabott idő nem tette lehetővé, hogy minden kérdést feltegyek, de így is egy kedves, jó humorú és világlátású embert ismertem meg az énekes személyében.
Helló Derrick, üdv az olvasóink nevében is. Milyen volt a turné első állomása tegnap Münchenben?
Üdv mindenkinek! Szönyű volt! Csak viccelek, jó volt, megtört a jég, ma szétrúgjuk a seggeteket! (nevet)
Ok, megnyugodtam! A Kairos 2 éve jelent meg és ti általában 2-3 évente új albummal jelentkeztek. Szóval lesz új album idén vagy jövőre? Vannak már kész dalok az új albumra?
Igen, igazából az idei év végére tervezzük, hogy megjelentetjük az új albumot. A zenei résszel nagyjából végeztünk, most már a dalszövegeken dolgozunk. A vokális megoldásokon is agyalunk még, mit hogyan, hova rendezzünk. De ezt még a dalszövegek nélkül csináljuk, ilyen a munkamódszerünk, először megcsináljuk a zenét, aztán pakoljuk csak rá a vokálokat, ha az már teljesen kész van. A zeneszerzési periódus alatt mindenféle ötletemet feljegyzem, aztán visszahallgatom őket és eldöntöm, hogy lehet-e velük valamit kezdeni a jövőben. Szóval összegezve jelenleg a dalszövegeken és a vokálokon dolgozunk és a turné végén nekiállunk a felvételeknek.
Ismét Roy Z-vel fogtok dolgozni, mint legutóbb?
Nem, most Los Angelesben vesszük fel a lemezt Ross Robinsonnal és Steve Evetts-szel. Szeretjük minden lemezen változtatni a producert, producereket. Dolgoztunk már mindkettejükkel különböző Sepulture albumokon, Ross-szal különösen jó lesz együtt dolgozni. Én személy szerint még sosem dolgoztam vele, de ő volt a Roots album producere és nagyon izgatott, szeretné sokkal jobbra csinálni az új albumot, mint a Roots. Nagyon hisz a zenekarban és mi is izgatottan várjuk, hogy ismét Brazílián kívül, az USA-ban stúdiózzunk, ahol nem dolgoztunk 1998 óta.
A Kairost még ugye Sao Pauloban vettétek fel.
Igen, a legtöbb albumunk ott készült. De szerintem jó lesz a változtatás, mert iszonyatosan rossz Sao Pauloban eljutni a próbára, a stúdióba. A közlekedés egy rémálom ott, a leküzdendő távolságok még inkább. Szóval király lesz, hogy csak egy stúdióban leszünk, mindenki ugyanabban a házban, teljesen a felvételekre koncentrálva!
Hogyan írjátok az új dalokat? Tudtok a turnén jammelni vagy amikor hazamentek, otthon gyakoroltok majd elkülditek egymásnak az ötleteiteket?
Van egy rakás ötletünk témánk a turnéről, de elsősorban otthon írjuk a dalokat. Elszeparálunk egy stúdiót, aztán minden nap ott vagyunk mondjuk délután 1-től 7-ig. Általában Andreas jön egy riffel, amire aztán Eloy dobol valamit, általában így születnek meg az alapok. Néha Andreasnak van valami jó témája, amit otthon írt, akkor átküldi nekem, én meghallgatom majd véleményezem, hogy ez király vagy éppen tök szar. (nevet). Szóval megbeszéljük, hogy mit és hogyan írunk.
Szóval Eloy már egy abszolút teljes jogú tagja a Sepulturának? Írhat zenét is?
Teljes mértékben. Ez a lényege, hogy egy zenekarban játszol. Hozd nyugodtan az ötleteid, nálunk ez mindig így működött, amikor én beszálltam, nekem is azt mondták, hogy el is várják, hogy hozzájáruljak a csapat zenéjéhez. Még ha rossz is, amit esetleg hozol, abból is lehet később valami nagyszerű, hiszen több ember is megnézi, változtathat rajta. Szóval Eloy-nak kiemelkedő szerepe volt az új dalok megírásában. Könnyen hallhatod, hogy a stílusa teljesen más, mint Igoré vagy Jean Dolabelláé. Megvan a saját stílusa, rendkívül tehetséges és még nagyon fiatal!
Hány éves is most? 20-21? Amikor láttam veletek teljesen lenyűgözött!
19 volt, amikor csatlakozott hozzánk szóval most 21. Nagyon jó hallani az új dalokban mennyire belerakta a saját ötleteit. Egyszerűen fantasztikus, nagyon hozzátesz a metalhoz ezekben az új dalokban. Nagyon tradicionális, nagyon metal, de egyben nagyon… új és modern. Nagyon jó, hogy ő dobol nálunk.
Ezt az újat és modernt amolyan metalcore-os értelemben gondolod?
Az új dalok inkább, azt kell mondjam valahogy matekosabb megközelítésűek.
Mint például a Dillinger Escape Plan?
Igen, és akkor még egy nagyon jó metalos függönyt is hoz a dobon, nagyon jó lesz ezeket a dalokat élőben is játszani! Mindben megvannak ezek a dolgok és mindegyik nagyon egyedinek hangzik. Nagyon más lesz, mint eddig bármi!
Térjünk vissza a Kairoshoz egy pillanatra. Felvettetek egy Ministry dalt, a Just One Fix-t. Nagyon jól sikerült, de ami jobban meglepett, hogy a koncertprogramotok részévé is tettétek. Lesz valami hasonló az új albumon is?
Igen, felvesszük majd a Death Zombie Ritualját és egy brazil banda, a Chico Science egy dalát is. Szóval ez a két feldolgozás lesz és úgy tervezzük, hogy majd élőben is játszuk őket. Mindig jó valami újjal előrukkolni, a Ministry dal is olyan volt, amire nem nagyon számítottak az emberek, de mégis jól sült el, ráadásul a szettbe is nagyon jól illeszkedett.
Akartalak kérdezni a 2011-es Thrashfest turnéról, ahol csak a Beneath The Remains, az Arise és a Chaos A.D. lemezekről játszottatok. Hogy érezted magad ezen a turnén? Még nem voltál a banda tagja amikor ezeket a lemezeket felvették, de a dalokat már játszottad sokszor a Sepu-s karriered során.
Összességében jó élmény volt. Nagyszerű bandákkal turnéztunk, jó móka volt. Személy szerint én jobban szeretem, amit most is csinálunk, hogy új és régi dalokat játszunk vegyesen, nagyon erőteljesen. Azt, hogy állandóan valami hasonlót csináljunk az nagyon unalmas lenne nekünk és szerintem a többi bandának is. Ők is eléggé így éreztek. Egy idő után azért ez elég unalmas, hiszen mindenki csinálja az új dolgait, zenét szerez, keményen dolgozik rajta, majd meg is turnéztatja ezeket az új dalokat. Ezzel együtt volt benne valami nagyszerű, valami emelkedett, hogy ez valami különleges volt. Mint a nézőknek, szintúgy nekünk. Számomra is, hiszen én az Arise lemezt hallgatva nőttem fel és más hasonló zenéken, szóval minden egyes alkalommal, amikor ezeket a dalokat játsszuk, az arra az időszakra emlékeztet.
Egy viszonylag kicsi klubban láttalak akkor titeket Katowicében, de már többször láttalak titeket nagyobb fesztiválok színpadjain is és úgy hiszem azok jobban állnak nektek. Mit gondolsz erről? A kisebb helyszíneket vagy a nagy fesztiválokat szereted jobban?
Hát az a koncert tényleg nem volt a legjobb… (nevet) A kérdésre válaszolva: attól függ. Szeretem mindkettőt. Király, amikor van hely fel-alá rohangálni, mászkálni a színpadon, de szeretem a kisebb helyek intimitását, ahol a rajongóidtól egy lépésre játszol. Mindannyian ilyen helyeken kezdtük, ráadásul ez nagyobb kihívással is jár, hiszen ott állnak közvetlenül előtted, karba tett kézzel és szigorúan néznek rád, hogy még jobban csináld a dolgod. (közbe imitálja) Szóval tényleg nincs kedvencem, de szeretem azért, ha van hely a színpadon. Nem kell egy hatalmas arénának vagy valami ilyesminek lennie, de azért legyen helyem mozogni, mert ha nem tudok az nagy szívás.
Mi az ami téged ennyi év után is inspirál a zene. és szövegírásra?
A mindennapok, mert az élet mindig változik, és ez természetesen nagy hatással van arra, amiről írunk. A dolgok teljesen megváltoztak akár 4 vagy 8 évvel ezelőtthöz képest is. Mindig van valami ami történik a történelemben, a társadalomban vagy a magánéletedben. De akár könyvek, filmek is befolyásolhatnak vagy az emberek akikkel találkozol. Az, hogy turnézhatok a Sepulturával azt jelenti, hogy rengeteg új emberrel, kultúrával és nyelvvel találkozom. Ez mind hozzátesz a kreativitáshoz.
Az új album is egy konceptalbum lesz, mint pl a Dante XXI volt?
Nem, nem igazán. Szeretnénk ettől egy kicsit eltávolodni, mert annyit csináltuk a múltban. Most csak engedünk a sodrásnak, mindannak ami mostanában történik velünk, ami mostanában a világban folyik.
(A turnémanager szól, hogy utolsó kérdés) Jaj, elég sok kérdésem lett volna még, de akkor csak egy záró gondolat. Többször és több helyen játszottatok már nálunk Magyarországon, milyen emlékeid vannak és mit üzensz a magyar rajongóknak?
Mindig nagyszerű itt játszani, szeretném ha akár még több helyen is megfordulhatnánk, mert ez egy érdekes ország. Remek fesztiválok vannak itt, ahol rengeteg különböző stílusú banda is fellép. Nagyszerű lenne visszatérni, hogy még több koncertet adhassunk itt.

Hey Derrick, nice to meet you, greetings from our readers as well! How was the first concert of the tour yesterday in Munich?
It was terrible. Just kidding, it was good, it broke the ice so we are going to kick your ass tonight! (laughs)
Ok, now I’m relieved. Kairos came out 2 years ago and you release a new record every 2 or 3 years. So do you plan to release a new album this year or the next? Have you already written the songs for it?
Yes, we are going to release a new album this year, actually. So far we’ve written pretty much the musical part and now we are working on the lyrics. We’ve been working on the formation of the vocals for example. But with no lyrics! It is kind of how we work. We do all the music and put the vocals there later. During the writing process there are ideas that I record and then I go back and listen to them like „oh, yeah, that one sounded cool, let’s try to follow up on that”. So now we are piecing the lyrics together and at the end of this tour we’ll start recording.
Are you going to work with Roy Z again?
No, we are going to record the album in Los Angeles with Ross Robinson and Steve Evetts. We like to switch producers usually on each album. We’ve worked with Steve and with Ross before on different Sepultura albums in the past, and it’s going to be great working with Ross. Personally I’ve never worked with him, he worked on the Roots album and he is really excited, he really wants to make it better than that album. He really believes in the band so we are all excited to record outside of Brazil, in the US, it’s been a long time, I think since 1998. That was the last time we recorded in the US.
Yeah, Kairos was also recorded in Brazil, in Sao Paulo.
Yeah, most of them were recorded there. But I think it’s a good change, just because it’s a pain in the ass to get to the practice, to get to the studio in Sao Paulo. It’s a nightmare with all the traffic, the distance where it is. So i think it’s gonna be great to be in one studio, everyone staying at the same house, fully focused on the recording process.
How do you write the songs for a new album? Do you jam together on the tour or just go home, practice there and send your ideas to each other?
We have a bunch of ideas from the tour, but primarily write when we get home. We block off a studio and we go there for a certain amount of time each day, let’s say from 1 to 7. Usually Andreas comes with riffs, ideas and then Eloy will play drums over those riffs we kinda piece it together that way. Sometimes Andreas has something that was written by him at home and he sends it to me to listen to it and I would give my opinion like it could be cool or this is shit. (laughs) Just really to communicate the ideas what we’re going to write.
So now Eloy is an abslutely full-right member of Sepultura, he can contribute even to the music.
Absolutely, that’s the whole idea of being in a band, to be free to come with ideas, for us it has always been this way, even when I joined the band they said „We want you to be the member who brings things to the table”. And even if it’s bad it’s really good to bring something, you can find amazing things, you might think it’s not so great, but it can be changed around. So Elay has been fundamental in creating these new songs. You can hear that his style is very different from Igor or from Jean Dolabella. He has his own style, he is very talented, he is very young.
How old is he now, 20-21? I was blown away by him when I saw Sepultura with him.
He was 19 when he joined the band, he’s now 21. It’s great to hear his ideas with new songs because then I can really hear his signature. It’s been amazing, he really adds to the metal element in these new songs. They are very traditional, very metal, but at the same time also very… new, modern. So it’s exciting to have him playing drums.
You mean this in a metalcore way?
The newer songs are almost like… mathematical in a kind of way.
Like Dillinger Escape Plan?
Yeah, and then there is this wall of metal, so it’s exciting it’s gonna be fun to do these songs live. They have all these elements and they sound very unique. It’s gonna sound very different from anything out there!
Back to Kairos for a second, you recorded a Ministry cover for that album, Just One Fix. It was cool but what surprised me that you put that song into your regular concert setlist, you’ve played it live many times. Are you gonna do something like this on the upcoming album?
Yeah, we are gonna record a Death cover, Zombie Ritual and a cover of a song of a brazilian band called Chico Science. So these two covers and we’re definitely going to play them live. It’s always nice to add that element in there. The Ministry cover was something the people were not expecting, but it ended up something that flows very well with the rest of the set.
I also wanted to ask you about a tour that happened in 2011. Thrashfest Classics. How did it feel for you to play only songs from three albums (Beneath The Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D.) where you were not a member yet, but of course you’ve played many songs from them in all your career with Sepultura?
It was good, it was good to be on tour with all those great bands, that was the fun element of it. Personally I prefer to do what we are doing now, the mix of old and new, extremely powerful. So to do that all the time would be very boring for all the other bands as well. They kinda felt the same way. After a time it would be very boring because everyone is doing their stuff now. They are working so hard and travelling, playing those new songs live. But it was a great element, great vibe, that it was something special to see and to perform. Also for me because I was growing up listening to songs from Arise for example, and stuff like that. So everytime I play those songs live it reminds me to that time period so it’s pretty cool.
I saw you on that tour in a quite small club in Katowice, but I’ve seen you many times in bigger festivals and I think the bigger stage fits you better. What is your opinion about this? Do you prefer smaller venues or big festivals?
Yeah, the Katowice show wasn’t the best. (laughs) About the question: it really depends, I like them all. It’s cool to be able to switch around to play in a huge stage where you can run back and forth, but I also like the intimacy of being in a small place right in front of the fans. This is where it started for all of us. And it’s also challanging to play that close to people because you get their gut reaction, you can see them in arms crossed looking directly at you that you should do better (he imitates it). So I don’t really have a favourite. What I like though is to have a little space on stage. It doesn’t have to be a huge arena or anything like that, but it’s nice to have some space. Tiny stages just suck, you can’t move, that’s not fun.
You mentioned Eloy already, but what inspires you particularly to write songs, to write music or lyrics after so many years in the band?
I guess it’s just everyday life, because life is constantly changing around us, it has such a huge influence on everything we’re gonna write about. Things have definitely changed from 4 or 8 years ago. There is always something happening historically, socially and personally. I think all these elements can influence what’s to be written in the lyrics. Even different books, movies or people that you meet in your life. They can also influence what’s going to put on an album. And travelling with Sepultura! Meeting different people, cultures, languages also add to the creativity.
Do you plan the next album to be a concept album like Dante XXI was?
No, not really. We wanted to step away from that because we did it so much. We just want this to flow with all these things that are happening with us now, what’s going on in the present time.
(The tour manager signals that it’s time for the last question) Oh, no I had so many in my mind. So a standard one. You’ve played many times in Hungary. What are your memories about it and what’s your message to the hungarian fans?
It’s always great to play here, I wish we could play more places here it’s an interesting country. You have great festivals here with such a huge variety of bands playing. It’d be great to come back and play more shows here.
