Üdvözöllek titeket Magyarországról! Először is gratulálni szeretnék a debütáló lemezetekhez nagyon erős anyag lett. Hazánkban még nem igazán ismerik a The Fallen Within-t, ami remélem változni fog. Ezért kérlek mesélj néhány szót a bandáról, hogyan alakultatok meg, milyen sikereitek voltak és milyen a mai görög metal zenei élet?
Először is szeretnék köszönetet mondani a munkánkat dicsérő szavakért! Nagyon köszönjük! Az igazság, hogy a The Fallen Within egy új banda, bár tény, hogy 2003-ban alakult. Ez az első albumunk, így jelenleg még nem vagyunk annyira ismertek a hazátokban és a kívánságaid a mienké is. haha. Én alapítottam a bandát 3 taggal, de néhány változás után sikerült elkészíteni az Intoxicated albumot, aztán leszerződtünk az olasz Coroner Records-zal és eddig minden nagyon jól ment! Az „Intoxicated” album előtt felvettünk egy demo-t is, de a felvételeket nézve inkább csak próbálkozás volt, haha! Aztán úgy döntöttünk, várunk kicsit, fejlődünk technikailag, felnövünk, befektetünk egy kis pénzt, hogy profi és tapasztalt producerekkel dolgozhassunk és, szerintem, megérte a kockázat.
A görög metal színtérről annyit tudok mondani, hogy az lesz a kiadók új célpontja, mivel van egy pár elég jó banda, ez a színtér kicsit sem hasonlít a régi amatőr szcénára. Az előző években, rajtunk kívül, még néhány görög banda leszerződött külföldi kiadókkal Suicidal Angels (Nuclear Blast), Elysion, Descending (Massacre), Tardive Dyskinesia (Coroner) stb. Nem szabad megfeledkezni, hogy nagyon sok jó banda van itt, mint pl. a Rotting Christ, Spetic Flesh, Firewind stb. Még ha Görögország egy szerencsétlen „buzuki” országa is, azért nagyon sok metál rajongó van és mindig sok támogatást nyújtanak azoknak a bandáknak, akik ellátogatnak hozzánk.
A zenétekben sokféle hatást érzek, amitől nagyon masszívvá válik az új albumotok. Milyen zenei céllal indultatok a kezdetekkor és változott-e azóta az irány? Hogyan jellemeznétek a zenéteket/stílusotokat?
Pontosan!!! Pont ez szeretnénk elérni! Egy modern albumot létrehozni, ami különböző metál stílusokat ötvöz, mint a dallamos metál, metalcore, progresszív, experimental electro, stb. Elég bonyolult néha és sokszor furcsa ez a fajta ötvözet az emberek számára, de az én szemszögömből ez valami friss dolog. Mostanában a zenében minden ki van találva, úgyhogy mi nem akartunk egy tipikus melodeath vagy hardcore, stb. albumot. De ezt nem csak azért fogod tudni, mert én elmondtam, hanem, hogy ha meghallgatod a lemezt, nagyon sok elemmel fogsz találkozni!
Boldogok vagyunk, mivel elértük az elsődleges célunkat! Amikor elkezdtünk zenélni, a fő cél a banda fejlődése volt és, hogy annyi országban játszhassunk, amennyiben csak lehet!
Melyik bandák a régi nagy kedvenceitek, amelyek bevezettek a metal világába és aki hatással voltak rátok az album elkészítése elött?
Nos, rengeteg bandát imádok! Megemlíthetném az In Flames-t, Soilwork-t, Meshuggah-t, Dark Tranquillity-t, Arch Enemy-t, Mercenary-t, Rammstein-t Európából és még az As I Lay Dying-t, Parkway Drive-t, August Burns Red-t, Lamb of God-t, Nevermore-t az USA-ból és még sok mást! Nem feledkeztünk meg azokról a bandákról sem, akiken felnőttünk: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Manowar, Judas Priest és Dream Theatre.
A második kérdésre pedig az a válaszom, hogy nem hiszem, hogy olyan hangzást akarnánk elérni, mint amilyen a Soilwork-nek, vagy Lamb of God-nak van, minden természetesen jön! Amikor zenét szerzel, mindig hatással vannak rád a kedvenceid, de szerintem minden természetesen jön, a lélek mélységeiből!
Milyen visszajelzéseket kaptatok eddig az albummal kapcsolatban? Mennyire sikeres Görögországban, illetve a világ más részein?
Eddig nagyon jó kritikákat kaptunk, különösen az USA-ból, Franciaországból, Spanyolországból, Németországból és a balkán országokból! Vannak emberek, akik furcsállták az albumot, nem értették a műfajok keveredését és nagyon furán hangzott számukra! Meg ne feledkezzünk meg azokról az emberekről sem, akik megvesznek egy cd-t meghallgatnak a számokból 10-15 mp-t és kijelentik, hogy hmm, ez jó… hmm, ez szar.. haha!
Itt Görögországban sok ember van, akik már régebb óta ismerik a bandát és sok email-t küldenek, hogy mennyire tetszik nekik az album! Az, hogy egy helyi ‘zine szavazatai alapján, 16.317 szavazat után, a banda videoklipjét választották meg legjobb görög videoklipnek, hatalmas promóció volt. Más országokban elért eredményekről még korai lenne beszélni. Azt viszont megemlíteném, hogy egy amerikai ‘zine az „Intoxitaced”-et választotta meg a hét albumának. Nem rossz egy elsőlemezes bandától!
Melyik a kedvenc dalotok az albumról és miért?
Nagyon, nagyon nehéz kérdés! Minden egyes számot imádok, mint ahogyan az apák szeretik a gyermeküket, de a szám, ami a legközelebb áll hozzám, ami megsiratott, mikor felvettük, a The Great Fall volt, mert ez a szám engem jellemez, teljesen! Nagyon erős érzéseket vált ki belőlem…
Ki írja a dalokat és hogyan történik a számok megvalósítása?
Az össze tag besegít a dalírásnál, de én (Gio S.) és Steve Al. vagyunk a felelősek az írásért és hangszerelésért. Ez nem szabályszerű, de ennél az albumnál így történt. Talán másodiknál más lesz a helyzet.
Az Intoxicated hangzása nagyon jól sikerült szerintem. Ti is közreműködtetek a Finnországban zajló keveréshez, vagy az internet segítségével történtek az egyeztetések?
Őszintén szólva Finnországba utaztam, hogy Ahti Kortelainen-nel keverjük az albumot, a Tico Tico stúdióban, de nem sokat működtem benne közre! Ahti egy nagyon tapasztalt zenész és én lennék az utolsó, aki megmondhatná neki, mit, hogyan csináljon! Amikor kérdezett valamiről, mindig elmondtam a véleményemet, de mindig hagytam, hadd csinálja, amihez ért. Ez az együttműködés olyan volt, mint egy iskola, rengeteg tapasztalatot és tudást szereztem.
Görögországban gondolom elég híresek vagytok, sűrűn turnéztok az országban? Milyen a görög közönség?
Igen, a The Fallen Within-nek elég sok rajongója van Görögországban! Ezért is tervezzük az első görög turnénkat. Áprilisban indul és 7-8 várost fogunk meglátogatni. A munkánk promotálására a turnézás a legjobb mód. Lesznek még fesztiválok is, amiken próbálunk megjelenni. A görög közönségnek a metál minden faja tetszik, de a legnépszerűbbek a Hard Rock, Hardcore és Death Metal, a Power és Progresszív metál nem annyira népszerű.
Várható a jövőben, hogy csatlakoztok egy nagyszabású turnéhoz, amivel mondjuk bejárjátok Európát?
Ez az álmunk! Nagyon szeretnénk! Tény, hogy új bandaként nagyon nehéz egy jó ügynökséget megszerezni, kivéve, ha van egy tonna euród, hehehe. De megpróbálunk mindent, hogy Európában turnézhassunk. Azt is reméljük, hogy meghívást kapunk majd nyári fesztiválokra és Magyarországra is!
A Sound of Destruction lett Görögországban a 2009-es év legjobb metal zenei klipje, gratulálok hozzá tényleg elég jól sikerült. Hogyan zajlódtak a felvételek?
Köszönöm! Az E-rock gitármagazin szervezett egy szavazást, amin, az első helyen végeztünk és februárban Gus G., a leghíresebb görög gitáros (Ozzy Osbourne, Firewind) fogja átadni a díjat nekünk egy helyi klubban, Athénben. A videót és a koncepciót Bob Katsionis (Firewind) és a Progressive Visions csoport rendezte egy professzionális stúdióban, ami nagyszerű élmény volt és nagyon jól éreztük magunkat! Bob vágta a klipet és az eredmény nagyon jó lett, ahhoz képest, hogy alacsony költségvetésű produkció.
Milyen a kapcsolatotok a kiadóval, hogyan viszonyulnak hozzátok, megfelelő támogatást kaptok a Coroner-től?
Nos, egy nap felmentem a banda Myspace oldalára és észrevettem, hogy van egy üzenet a kiadó tulajdonosától, amiben gratulál nekünk a profi eredményekért, bemutatta nekünk a Coroner Records-t és elkezdtünk a menedzseremmel napi szinten beszélni. Volt napi 3-4 ajánlatunk kiadóktól, de végül a Coroner Records-t választottuk, mert nagyszerű üzletet sikerült velük kötni, és úgy tűnt, komolyan akarják a TFW-t! Igaz, hogy egy új kiadó, de profin dolgoznak és az Intoxicated-et már szétküldték egész Európában, az Államokba és Amerikába! Reménykedjünk Japánba is sikerül eljutnia.
Meséljetek pár szót a tagokról, milyenek a hétköznapjaitok, mit dolgoztok, illetve milyen zenei múlttal rendelkeztek?
Nos, én tanár vagyok, Steve és Nick webdesignerek, Steven és John pedig diplomázni fognak klasszikus zongorából és basszusból, Bill pedig trambulin mesteredző és atléta hehehe! Szeretünk gyakorolni a hangszereken, neten promotálni a bandát, iszogatni stb.
A zenei hátterünket illetőn, nem mind szeretjük ugyanazt a zenét, különféle hatások érvényesülnek. Ez nyilvánvalóan hallható az albumon. Személy szerint az összes metál stílust szeretem, Steven-hez közelebb áll az elektronikus zene, John szereti az alternatív metalcore-t, Steve a massive core-t, Nick pedig olyan bandákat szeret, mint az Opeth és a black metal, Billy pedig klasszikus srác!

I greet you from Hungary! First I’d like to congratulate you for your debut album, it is a really strong stuff. In our country they not really know The Fallen Within and I hope that this will change. So I’d like to ask you to say a few words about the band, how did you form, what successes did you reach and what is like the Greek metal life nowadays?
First of all I would like to thank you very much for your good terms to our work! Much appreciated! The truth is that The Fallen Within is a new band despite the fact that it has been created in 2003. It’s our first attempt in discography so for the moment we are not well known to your country and your wish is also ours hehehe! Our band created by me and began as a 3 member band but after few lineup changes which didn’t permit us to go further we succeeded to record Intoxicated album, then we signed with the Italian Coroner Records and everything until now seem to role very well for us! Before”Intoxicated” album we had recorded in the past a demo but I think it was just an effort to know what recording is haha! Then we took the decision to wait, improve our technique, composing ability, be more mature, deposit some money in order to create a professional work with experienced producers and I think this risk worked.
Concerning the Greek metal scene I have to say that it will be the next target for labels because there are some great bands with amazing musicians working in a professional way and the scene has nothing to do with the past amateur one! During the former year besides us, other Greek bands signed with important labels from abroad like Suicidal Angels (Nuclear Blast), Elysion and Descending (Massacre), Tardive Dyskinesia (Coroner) etc. Don’t forget about our high class bands like Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh, Firewind etc. Even if Greece is unfortunately a „bouzouki” country there are a lot of metal fans here and they always support bands that visit our country for a gig!
I feel a lot of influences in your music which makes the new album really massive. What kind of musical target did you started with and has it changed since then? How would you describe your music/style?
Exactly!!! That’s what we would like to do! To create a modern album which could mix several styles of metal like melodic death, metalcore, progressive, experimental electro etc. It’s very very difficult and sometimes that sounds strange at many people just because it has this kind of mixture, but in my point of view is something fresh. Nowadays in music everything has been composed so we didn’t like to compose just a typical melodeath or hardcore etc. That’s the easiest thing! Believe me hehehe!
Well if you want to give a name to the style we represent you would say that TFW is a modern melodic metalcore band. But you can’t say only that because as I have told you and as you also have noticed while listening to our music you could find much more elements in this album!
We feel happy because we succeed our primary target! When we started to play music we were always dreaming to release an album worldwide and at the moment our main target is to improve the band day by day in all aspects and to visit for gigs as many countries as possible during our musical career!
Which bands are your old big favorites, the ones that took you into the metal world? And which are the ones that had their effect on you before you recorded the album?
Well there are so many bands we admire! We could mention In Flames, Soilwork, Meshuggah, Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, Mercenary, Rammstein from Europe and also As I Lay Dying, Parkway Drive, August Burns Red, Lamb of God, Nevermore from USA and many more! We don’t forget also bands with which we grew up like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Manowar, Judas Priest and Dream Theatre.
Concerning your second question I don’t think that we had in our mind to have the sound of Soilwork or Lamb of God etc but everything roled naturally! When you compose music always you do it influenced by what you like but in my point of view everything is coming from the depths of the soul normally!
What responses did you get for the album so far? How succesful is it in Greece and in other countries?
Well, the fact is that until now we had some really great reviews especially from USA, France, Spain, Germany and Balkan countries! There are also some people who felt strange listening to our album just because they didn’t understand this kind of mixture of many styles of metal in one cd and it sounded very unusual to their ears! Don’t forget about people who also take a cd, listen to the first 10-15 seconds of each song and they say hmmm it’s great or hmmm it’s shit… hahaha!
In Greece there are so many people who know our band a few years ago and always they send mails telling us how much they like this album! A very good promoting result for us was the fact that TFW has been chosen as the band with the best Greek video clip for 2009 by a local zine having 16.317 votes! In other countries I don’t have something special to say because it’s too early. I have to mention that a zine from USA chose Intoxicated as the album of the week! Not bad for a new band in discography I think!
Which one is your favorite song on the album and why?
Very very difficult question! I love each song like a father who loves each one of his children, but I have to say that the song which really speaks to me, which really made me cry when I recorded it was The Great Fall because it’s just the song which represents me totally! It’s the song which has born to me very strong feelings…
Who writes the songs and how tha realization is happening?
All of bandmates help in composing generally, but the person who is responsible for writing and arranging music is me (Gio S.) and our singer Steve Al. is responsible for the lyrics. That’s not a rule, but this happened to this album! Maybe in our second one we will work differently!
Intoxicated’s sound is really good. Did you participate in the mixing in Finland or you used the internet to collate?
Thank you again very much! Well to be honest I travelled to Finland for mixing the album with Ahti Kortelainen at Tico Tico studio but I didn’t participate so much! Ahti is a fantastic experienced music producer and I am the last one who could tell him what to do! When he was asking me I was always telling him my opinion but I would like to leave him to work having clear mind! This cooperation was something like a big school which offered me some important experience and knowledge!
I guess you’re pretty known in Greece, do you go on tours often? What’s the Greek audience’s like?
Yes, I could say that The Fallen Within is a band which is known to many Greek metal fans! That’s why we are planning our first Greek tour in April to visit about 7-8 different cities! We want to promote our work as many people as possible and gigs are the best way to do it! Also there are some great festivals here where we will try to book! Greek audience like all styles of metal but most popular are Hard Rock, Hard Core, Death Metal, and less are Power and Progressive.
Isn’t it expected that you join to a big tour in play around in Europe?
It’s our dream! We want it so much! The fact is that it’s very difficult to sign with a good booking agent when you are a new band except if you have tons of euros hehehe
We will do the best to have a tour also in Europe! We also hope to invite us to some Summer Festivals out there and also to Hungary!
Sound of Destruction has become the best metal music video of Greece in 2009, I congratulates you it really worked out fine. How did the recordings happen?
Thank you! E-rock.gr zine organised a vote contest and we felt very happy for the first place and in February Gus G., the most famous Greek guitarist (Ozzy Ozbourne, Firewind) will award TFW in a local club in Athens! The video and the concept directed by Bob Katsionis (Firewind) and Progressive Vision group recorded in a professional studio for video clips in Athens and it was an amazing experience with a lot of fun that day! Bob also edited the clip and the result was very good for a low budget production.
What’s your connection like with the publisher, how they approach you, do you get proper support from Coroner?
Well one day when I logged in the band’s MySpace page I noticed that there was a message from the owner of the label who was congratulating us for our professional result, introduced Coroner Records to us and we began a daily communication with me and our manager! The fact is that we had offers from 3-4 more label but we ended to Coroner Records because we succeed a really great deal for the band and they seemed to be serious and show us they really wanted TFW! Even if it’s a new label, these guys are working professionally and Intoxicated has been distributed to almost all the countries of Europe, in USA and America! We hope the same for Japan soon!
Tell a few words about the members, what’s your weekdays like, what do you work, and what kind of musical background do you have?
Well I am a teacher, Steve and Nick are designing in web etc, Steven and John are trying to take their degree in classical piano and bass and Bill is a trampoline master trainer and athlete hehehe! We like to practice on our instruments, surfing to internet promoting our band, drink some beers of course etc.
Concerning our musical background I would like to say that we don’t like all of us the same style of metal or music generally and we have different influences. That’s something obvious in the album! Personally I like all metal styles, Steven is closer to electro music, John loves alternative metalcore, massive core for Steve, Nick loves bands like Opeth and black metal and Billy is a more classical guy!
