Hello srácok! Bemutatkozó lemezetekkel ti is bebizonyítottátok, hogy skandinávia az egyik legerősebb metal színtér szerte a világon. Mi a nagy titok, minek köszönhető a temérdek remek banda?
Ville: A következő dolgok elég közhelyesek lesznek, de szerintem köze van a finn gondolkodáshoz, a finn emberek nagyon dolgosak. A zenészek mind a tökéletesre törekszenek. A zenészek és az emberek is, mind a határaikat súrolják. A hangulatnak biztosan köze van ahhoz, ahol élünk. A természet lehet nagyon gyönyörű, de nagyon kegyetlen. Röviden, szerintem Finnországban a kreativitás és a kemény munka találkoznak.
Eddigi tapasztalaid alapján, arrafelé érezhetően nagyobb a kereslet a death/thrash anyagok iránt, mint mondjuk Európa többi országában? A norvég black réteget leszámítva, létezik egyáltalán nálatok műfajon belüli életképes konkurencia?
Ville: Szerintem nálunk Kelet,- és Közép-Európában nagy igény van a szókimondó dolgok iránt. Úgy érzem, a finn színtér jelenleg jobban kedveli a dallamos dolgokat, ami persze nem jelenti azt, hogy mindenki. Nem mondanám, hogy a black metálosok a riválisaink. Egészen más színtér, mint a mienk. Mi inkább thrash-esek vagyunk.
Mindnyájan jártasak vagytok már a stílusban, a felállásból pedig ketten jelenleg is tagok a hasonló körökben mozgó Casket-ben. Miért akartatok új zenekart alapítani? Mást nyújt ez a csapat, mint az eddigi projektek, vagy szimplán csak a közös zenélés vágya áll a háttérben?
Ville: Szerintem nem baj, ha van egy pár bandád. Aktívan tart és frissítő, más dolgokat is játszani és más érzelmeket kifejezni. Tuomas-on kívül mindenki csak demo-szintű bandákkal játszott eddig, a harvest-tel pedig lehetőségünk van turnézni is. Sok bandával csak a demo kiadásig jutunk.
Mennyire számít majd aktív, egységes társaságnak a The Final Harvest? Hosszú távra terveztek, koncertekkel és rendszeres lemez készítéssel, vagy ez csak afféle mellékprojekt, örömzene?
Ville: Nehéz erre hosszú távon válaszolni, de teljes erővel nyomulunk. Jövőre Finnországban fogunk folyamatosan koncertezni, nyáron pedig stúdióba vonulunk. Meglátjuk. Remélem az európai kapuk nyitva állnak, Németországban is játszunk.
Milyen céljaitok vannak a gárdával? Világméretű pusztítás, netán konkrétan a Föld leigázása? A viccet félretéve, valóban nagyon izmos lett a debüt korong, így érdekelne, külföldön kap e komolyabb promóciót az album? Reálisan gondolkodva, milyen sikerek vannak elérhető közelségben?
Ville: Nos, volt egy turnénk a Before the Dawn-nal, egy a Napalm Death-tel és volt egy német album promo turnénk is. Szerintem az elő show-k a legjobb promok számunkra, magukért beszélnek. Hallottunk pozitív kritikákat is és egyre erősödünk.
Az általatok is képviselt irányzatban manapság már igen nehéz újat, frisset alkotni, az egyediség hiányát pedig gyakran súlyos hibaként kezelik a szaklapok. Korábban számoltatok az ilyen jellegű hátrányokkal? Milyen visszajelzéseket kaptatok eddig ezzel kapcsolatban? Figyelemmel kíséritek a feedback-eket?
Ville: Ezekkel a dolgokkal nem igazán számolsz, mikor elkezdesz zenélni. A saját dolgainkat játszuk, van négy kiváló tagunk, akik az egészhez a saját stílusukat adják. Hiszünk, hogy bennünk van az emberek által emlegetett Final Harvest sound. Ha még nem, az emberek majd megtanulják meghallani. Természetesen mindig örülünk a visszajelzéseknek, de gyakran a magad véleményére a legjobb adni, különösen, ha a zenét vesszük.
Körülbelül meddig tartott megírni a dalokat és felrántani a teljes anyagot?
Ville: A dalírás elég rövid és intenzív időszak volt. TFH nem készít demót, és néhány hónap alatt 10 számot írtunk, aztán rögtön mentünk a stúdióba és felvettük majd három hét alatt kikevertük az albumot.
A szövegek bár egyszerűek, mégis sokatmondóan tükrözik a társadalmi normákról alkotott véleményeteket. Pontosan mit takar a valóság? Sok embert gyűlölsz?
Ville: Szerintem elég szókimondó banda vagyunk, a dalszövegek is azok. A death metál szövegeknek illeszkedniük kell a gitár és dob menetekhez, ritmikus elemként kell viselkednie. Persze nem, mint Shakespeare, de megtalálhatod benne a lényeget és nem csak egy maszlag. Szeretem, ha a dalszövegeink a fekete humorról és nem pedig a végítélet terjesztéséről szól. A Final Harvest arról szól, mi történik, ha így folytatjuk tovább. Az emberi faj mindenképpen egy olyan faj, ami megérdemli, hogy utálják. Ha munkára jelentkezne a faj, a CV-n jól mutatna, mondjuk az, hogy népirtás.
Tavaly, négy másik bandával közösen, készítettetek egy split EP-t is, amin már hallható volt a Bloodgod c. tétel. Annak idején sikerült ezzel valamelyest felkelteni az emberek érdeklődését?
Ville: Az EP-t a nyári fesztiválok során és a médiában promotáltuk. Jó volt és szerintem megadta a kezdő lökést.
Az említett nótához időközben klip is készült. Mesélnél egy kicsit ennek körülményeiről? Hol és kivel vettétek fel a cuccot, illetve hogyan zajlott maga a forgatás?
Ville: Igen, ez az első, amihez video készült. Jól sikerült és már az elején tudtuk, hogy ütni fog. Egy jó helyszín az ilyenekre egy istálló, mellette tehenekkel. Egy nap alatt elékszült. Valami frankót és egyszerűt akartunk. A villanások Tuomas ötlete volt. Elég szépen tükrözik a dal mondanivalóját.
Hogyan jellemeznél egy metal bulit Finnországban? Sok az érdeklődő? Jó a közönség? Mennyire szokott beindulni a nép?
Ville: Egy finn metál koncertet mindenképp érdemes megnézni. A közönség sokat számít, ahol játszol. A helsinki-i közönséget nehéz meggyőzni, mivel rengeteg koncert van minden nap, de mondjuk Oulu-ban mindig szívesen látnak. Oulu egy igazi metál város. A legjobb időszak a koncertre, éjfél, mert akkorra az emberek már elég részegek ahhoz, hogy egy jót bugizzanak. Tényleg sokat számít, hol játszol, vicces milyen sok emberből állhat egy kis nemzet.
Előző télen volt egy rövid kis kalandotok volt a Napalm Death-el. Remek érzés lehet egy ilyen neves zenekarral megosztani a színpadot. Egy-egy show alkalmával sikerül ilyenkor ellesni ezt-azt a nagyoktól?
Ville: Határozottan így van. A Napalm Death-es srácok kb 100 évesek, nagyon kellemes és jó arcok. Csodálom őket, hogy szedik szét a helyeket éjjelről-éjjelről, koncertről-koncertre. Barney egy nagyon jó arc, fejet hajtok előtte. Egyike azon vokalistáknak, akikre nagyon felnézek.
Ha éppen nem thrasheltek, mivel ütitek el az időt? Szoktatok együtt lógni, közös programokat szervezni?
Ville: Tuomas eléggé elfoglalt a projectjeivel és munkáival, de néha megiszunk együtt néhány sört. Olyan gyakran látjuk egymást, hogy jól esik néha egy kicsit nélkülük. De persze imádok velük együtt lógni. Mindegyikünk tanul és dolgozik, így meg kell szervezni, mikor vannak próbák.
Van kedvenc együttesed, zenészed, ha úgy tetszik, példaképed, akire mai napig felnézel és sokat jelent számodra a munkássága?
Ville: Elég széles zenei ízlésünk van. Tuomas pl. játszott néhány Robbie Williams számot, mikor vendég Dj volt egy finn rádióban. Én hallgatok néha jazz-t és olyan előadókat, mint Johnny Cash. Személyes kedvenc énekesem pl. Nergal, Jon Nödtveidt és Johnny Cash. Amikor őket hallgatom, legszívesebben felmennék a színpadra zúzni. Mondjuk Nödtveidt ideológiáival nem igazán értek egyet, de hát ez van. Ő ilyen frontember volt, egyszerű és nagyszerű. Sajnos sosem találkoztam vele személyesen, de sokat hallottam róla olyanoktól, akik igen.

Hey, Guys! You proved with your debut album that Scandinavia is one of the most powerful metal scenes on world. What the big secret, why are there that many great bands?
Ville: I think next things are already bit cliches, but I think it has something to do with finnish state of mind, people in Finland are also really hardworking. When it comes to a musicianship it’s kind of seek for perfection. Musicians and people involved, push themselves to the limits all the time. Mood has to do something with our location. Finnish nature and duration of seasons is also a very inspirational thing. Nature can be very beautiful, but yet very cruel. Briefly, I guess in Finland creativity and hard work meet.
Based on your experiences so far, is there bigger demand for death/trash metal stuffs in your country than in any other European country? Do you have any concurrency in the genre except the Norway black metal?
Ville: I think that there is even more greater demand for straight forward stuff, such as ours in eastern and central europe. I just feel that scene in Finland is currently more into melodic stuff, that of course doesn’t count to everyone in. I wouldn’t call blackmetallists as our rivals, if you mean that. It’s quite different scene from ours. We are more thrashy than blackish in deathmetalscene.
You all are quite familiar with this genre, and two members of your band are also play in Casket as well. Why are you planning to start a new band? Does this band give other opportunities than your projects so far, or is only passion to play together in the background?
Ville: I think having couple of bands doesn’t really hurt. It keeps you active and it’s refreshing to play different kinds of stuff and express different moonds. Besides Tuomas everyone else have played mostly in demo-level bands so harvest has given us chance to play bigger gigs and for example tours. Something that you don’t do with just releasing some demos.
How active will The Final Harvest be? Do you plan in the long run with concerts and albums, or will it be some kind of side-project?
Ville: Hard to say in the long run, but now we are going forwards with full speed. We are going to keep on playing gigs early next year here in Finland and we’ll see if after summer we are going to studio to make a new record. We’ll see. I hope the doors to europe are open due for example our gigs at Germany.
What goals do you have with the band like worldwide destruction or the vanquishing of the Earth? To cast the jokes aside, the debut album became quite strong, does it receive reliable support, promotion? What successes are in the reach?
Ville: Well we did a tour in Finland with Before The Dawn, a tour with Napalm death and tour in Germany just to promote the album, so atleast we have tried to promote it. I think the best promo for us are the live shows, they speak for themselves. We have heard positive feedback and we are going pretty strong I think.
It’s quite hard to create something new, fresh in this genre and the professionals consider the lack of unique solutions as a grave failure. Have you taken such disadvantages into consideration before? What feedbacks have you received in this matter? Do you consider these feedbacks important?
Ville: You don’t really calculate that kind of things when you start to play. We do our own stuff and we have four unique players in our band who bring their own flavour to the shit. We believe that we have that final harvest -sound that people will refer to. If not yet, eventually people will learn to hear it. Ofcourse feedback is always welcome, but sometimes listening yourself and sticking to your opinions is the most important things, when it comes to the musical choices you make, specially.
How much time did it take to write and record the songs?
Ville: It was pretty short and intensive period of time whit the writing a recording. TFH didn´t have a demo phase and we wrote 10 songs for the debut album in few months and then headed straight to studio and recorded and mixed the album within 3 weeks.
However the lyrics are simple, still they reflect your views of the social norms. What is the reality in fact? Do you hate many people?
Ville: I think that we are pretty straight forward band and so are the lyrics. Deathmetal -lyrics do have to support guitar and drum accordions, act as a rhythmical element. Definetly not Shakespeare, but you will find a point there so there are not just blabber for the sake of fun. I consider our lyrics to be black humour, rather than spreading the gospel of the end, we do the quite opposite. The Final Harvest could be just what happens if we keep on going like this. Human race is definetly race worth hating. I think if we applied for work, for example genocides wouldn’t look good on our CV.
Last year you created a split EP in accompany with 4 other bands, which already consisted the Bloodgod track. Could you arouse the people”s curiosity with it in some way?
Ville: The EP was promoted on summerfestivals and in media and I think we popped out well from there. It was a good deal and I think gave us some headstart.
There is already a video for the mentioned song. Could you please tell us something about it? Where and with who did you recorded it, and how did the shooting go?
Ville: Yeah, the song was first one we ever did. It came out nice and from the beginning we knew, it’s gonna rock. Videos shooting location is as fancy as a barn, pack of cows next door. We shot in in one day. We wanted to make a cool and simple playing video. Tuomas had idea of these flashes that you see on the video. They reflect the lyrics of the song quite nice.
How could you describe a Finnish metal concert? Are there many people interested in it? Is the audience good? How much do they get the hang of it?
Ville: Finnish metalconcert is a event worth of visiting. Audiance depends so much where you are playing. People in Helsinki for example are sometimes hard to convince because there are so many concers going on every day of the week whereas Oulu usually gives a warm welcome. Oulu is a true metalcity. The right time to play is around midnight because people are just enough drunk to start a good boogie. It really depends where you are playing in Finland, it’s funny how many areas and people such a small nation can be consisted of.
You had some adventure with Napalm Death in the last winter. It can be a great feeling to share the stage with such a renowned band. Can you learn some this and that from such great bands?
Ville: Most definitely yes. Napalm Death’s guys are like hundred years old, really nice and easygoing guys. I just admire the way that night after night, venue after venue they tear the place apart. Barney, he’s a really cool dude, I can just bow before him. He’s is one of those vocalists that I look very much into.
When you aren”t trashing, what do you do? Do you go out together, arrange meetings and programs?
Ville: Tuomas is pretty occupied all the time with his projects and works, but we sometimes go out and have few beers together. We see eachother so much during rehearsals and gigs that sometimes it’s good to have time off from the guys. Ofcourse I love to hang out with these dudes because our chemistry just works. And we all have our studying and daytime jobs, so we’ll have to arrange time to rehearse and see eachother.
Do you have favorite bands, musicians, ideal that you look upon and his/her activities mean much to you?
Ville: We have very wide musical taste. Tuomas for example played some Robbie Williams when he was as quest DJ in finnish radio show. I even listen to jazz sometimes and artists such as Johnny Cash. My personal favourite vocalists are for example Nergal, Jon Nödtveidt and Johnny Cash. When I listen to these guys I just want to go onstage and rock out. When it comes to Nödtveidt I am not so much into his ideology, but goddam. He was such a frontman, modest and neat guy. Sadly I never met him in person, but have heard lots from people who did.
Since the end of the year closing in, I”d ask you, what were the outstanding creations and disappointments of the year?
Ville: I can’t really say any disappointments because we moved on so fast. We had great tour and we have gained reputation and good positive feedback. It has been a good year.
