Those Who Lie Beneath Interjú

(scroll down for English Version)

Hell. A Those Who Lie Beneath, mostanában fog bemutatkozni az első lemezével, ami igen erősre és intenzívre sikerült.

A Those Who Lie Beneath kb. 4 éve működik bandaként.

USA-ban mennyire felkapott mostanában a deathcore, metalcore stílus?

Szerinted mik a legfőbb hatások a zenétekben?

Mit tartasz a csapat erőségének?

Mennyire érdekelnek a csendesebb nyugodtabb dolgok?

Sokat játszok a World of Warcraft-tal is, igen, így van.

Élőben nagyszerű élmény a zenekar. Hiszek abban a death metal előadásban, ami felveszi a versenyt a játszott zene ellenségével.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Hell, A Those Who Lie Beneath is going to release its debut album which is a pretty intense one. Since you guys are pretty new, please tell us some words about the band. How long you have been guys been playing, and when did you come up with the idea to form TWLB?

Those Who Lie Beneath has been a band for close to four years. All of us knew of each other from playing in local brother bands. After a while, said bands disintegrated and we were all left hungry, needing something more. Eventually, Taylor, Jamie, and myself along with two original members that are no longer with us found each other. We were all like-minded in the respect of what we wanted to do musically, and the rest is pretty much history.

How popoular and/or hyped are the genres of deathcore and metalcore in the states?

Immensely. Isn’t the (Insert silly name)core phenomenon worldwide at the moment? I think everyone is feeling this wave. It is what it is. I think due to the wave of popularity, everyone is quick to label bands with that title. Whether or not I feel those assessments to be fair, at the end of the day, I do my best to not perpetuate the over genrefication that goes on in the heavy music culture by not caring one way or the other. A lot of bands stress out about what label the press, media, and their peers slap on them. It’s really pointless and self defeating. All you can do is hope that the listeners can transcend the preconceived notions they have regarding your band due to the label the masses put on you, and take your music for what it is objectively. We want people to like or dislike our music for the right reasons, not due to a meaningless tag some message board nerds stapled to a band.

I guess you can feel some familiarities with a few other bands as well, can you tell us more about this? What are the main influences behind the band?

We’re influenced by anything and everything. We’re really eclectic dudes musically and when drawing influence we try to reach beyond the musical. I think it’s really important to derive inspiration from life, experiences, people, real raw emotion. If you only site bands as inspiration and influence, you’re only going to regurgitate shit that has already been done. I believe that your only hope at creating truly original music is to make it come from somewhere outside the realm of music itself. But, if we must discuss what we listen to I can only speak for myself fairly. I think a lot of my personal influences in the heavy music department that came through in my writing at the time were bands such as Hate Eternal, Behemoth, Hour of Penance, Origin, stuff like that. I’m also a huge Black Metal fan. Bands like Watain, Ulver, Marduk, Deathspell Omega, 1349, Funeral Mist, shit like that. My Black Metal interest doesn’t make its way into the material on „An Awakening” as much as the Death Metal side of the coin, but it would be safe to expect a much darker sophomore release from us.

You guys can feel pretty damn luck, your debut album is going to get released by Metal Blade! Were there many others who wanted to publish your debut record?

We are very lucky, and very honored to be released by Metal Blade. Our record was released in the states through Rise Records, so they were the original crew of people who took interest in us. We only have the best things to say about the guys over at the Rise camp and we can’t thank them enough for what they’ve done and the doors that they have opened for us. Metal Blade is a label that has continually been releasing some of the greatest heavy records of all time for the past 25+ years and to have even a small part in that legacy is any Metal head’s dream.

„An Awakening” is getting release at the end of March. When and where did you record the songs? Have you managed to achieve what you planned to?

We recorded the record what must be close to seven months ago. The record itself was released five months ago in the states. We recorded it in our home town in Portland, Oregon with a Producer by the name of Stephen Hawkes. He was a blast to work with and he did a phenomenal job. Sonically, we’re really happy with how the record turned out. We were very tedious with the fine tunings of everything tonally. We’re really happy with how the record came out in general. We think it laid down a solid foundation for us and it’s diverse enough to allow us to operate on a level of creative freedom in the future without throwing our fans for a loop. We have an enormous hunger creatively, we plan to do a lot of experimenting and I think „An Awakening” hinted at that a bit, warning people that they should expect that in the future of this band.

Ten songs of high standards, and they are pretty brutal as well. On the other hand, there are loads of band like you nowadays. What do you think your strong points are?

Thank you very much. We hope more people share that sentiment. The heavy music scene is so saturated, it’s hard to say. I think there’s a mentality that directs this band that is unique. I’ve become increasingly aware of the phenomenon that is heavy bands who do not listen to heavy music. Becoming a professional, national, and international act has given us an opportunity to pick the brains of bands at the same level as we are and beyond, and it’s amazing to me how many of them don’t even listen to heavy music anymore. Apparently after playing and hearing it night after night they begin to become burned out on it. I feel that it’s a tragedy to lose excitement for the very culture you’re to which you’re contributing. One thing that I feel really sets us apart is our continued excitement for heavy music. We still care about Metal as consumers, listeners, as fans. We’re excited about what new bands are doing and it still touches us in a way that a lot of professional Metal musicians lose touch with over time. I think that is really going to benefit us by helping us stay fresh, relevant, and it will assist in us continually reinventing ourselves as artists.

You have been touring for a while now, and going on the next one alongside Aborted, The Red Chord and Rotten Sound. What do they think about your music? What do you expect of the European concerts?

I couldn’t tell you what they think about our music, we haven’t discussed it with any of them. I can’t tell you how excited I am about this tour. At the end of the day, we’re a Metal band, and we love playing for Metal fans. This is going to be our first full blown Metal tour and we couldn’t be happier about it. This is the demographic we want to be indulging and exposing ourselves to. It’s the culture that we aspire to be a part of. This venture into playing in front of a older, more discriminating crowd is going to be a real test for us, and I’m optimistic about it. You guys are excited about your Metal, we’re excited about our Metal, hopefully we can find a connection there.

What do you guys do besides music? Are you interested in calmer, silent stuff as well?

Of course. Once again, I can only fairly speak for myself. My hobbies for when I’m home is cinema, which along with the written word is my secondary favorite art form after music, eating Thai food, and even though I don’t get to indulge in this one as much, I love nature; camping, hiking, etc. I also play a lot of World of Warcraft, yes, it’s true. If it’s good enough for Corpsegrinder, it’s good enough for me. Aside from that, it’s pretty much all music.

What do you think about Budapest, would you like to show the locals what you can do? Can you promise us anything regarding this?

We’d love to show the residents of Budapest what we can do! Showing people what we can do live is a huge priority for us. We’re definitely a live experience. For people who dig the record, or even simply are OK with the record, I urge to see us live. We believe in a Death Metal performance that rivals the hostility of the music that’s being played. It’s extreme music and you should act accordingly. Violence is heavily encouraged. I can promise intensity, no bullshit sincerity, and a lot of spitting, so bring your rain coats.

Would like to wish you the very best!

Thank you so much for the interview and we hope to see you and the readers very soon. Keep an eye out and spread the word.
