Post Rock, Black Metal, Shoegaze hatásokkal, mély melankóliával. Talán így lehetne jellemezni stílusilag a zenéteket! Mit fűznél még ehhez?
Talán egy kis crust és hardcore punk behatás. 😉
A Thränenkind 2007-ben alakult Dél-Németországban. Mi kellett ahhoz, hogy rájöjjetek muszáj nektek ilyen zenekart alapítani?
A bandát 2007-ben alapítottam én és egy régi barátom. Azért alapítottuk meg, mert sötét, érzelmes és melankolikus zenén keresztül akartuk kifejezni magunkat. Mindig is bejött nekünk a metál és a punk és egyezett is a zenei ízlésünk. Neki volt egy dobkészlete, nekem volt egy gitárom, így elhatároztuk magunkat a közös zenecsinálás mellett. A kezdetekkor black metál dalokkal kísérletezgettünk. Egy sivár, nyomasztó légkört akartunk teremteni, de raktunk bele pár pozitív, reményteljes részt is. Az első kiadványunk az „Eine Momentaufnahme – Der Rest ist nur Einsamkeit” volt.
A „The Elk” összképe nagyon érdekes és jó. Egyrészt a dühös harag, másrészt az érzésekkel teli harmónia hallható. Hogyan épül fel egy dal, mi minden szükséges ahhoz, hogy egy igazi Thränenkind mestermű legyen?
Amikor megjön az ihlet és olyan a hangulatom akkor előveszem a gitárom. Miután megvan pár dallam, akkor leírom azokat, felveszek néhányat és elgondolkozok a dal dobolós részein. Többször meghallgatom ezt a „folyamatban lévő” dalt hogy lássam hol kell még javítani és hol kell változtatni. A többi bandatag elmondja a véleményét a dalról, de addig a pontig saját magam írom a zenét.
Szerintem egy Thränenkind dalnak melankolikusnak kell lennie. Megpróbálok egy kísérteties hangulatot teremteni, néha sötét és szomorú, néha inkább agresszív, néha nyomasztó, de mindig van benne egy reménysugár, amit már korábban említettem.
A stúdiófelvételek alatt mi mindent módosítottatok, milyen változtatásokat hajtottatok még végre?
A stúdióban már nem igazán változtattunk semmit. Természetesen Martin (Agrypnie), aki az album gitár részeit segített felvenni, nagy benyomást tett az egész hangulatára és hozzátette néhány ötletét. Mi (Martin, Max a hangmérnökünk és én) is úgy döntöttünk, hogy eszközölünk pár módosítást, például a pick sebességét változtattuk vagy meghatároztuk hogy hány gitár szám legyen bizonyos részeknél. Legtöbbször van egy jó elképzelésem arról, hogy milyen hangokat és effekteket akarok, és innen faragom addig, amíg a dal olyan nem lesz amilyennek akarom. Néha pedig mixelés közben döntünk valamiről (például az előzőleg tiszta gitár kicsit durvább hangzású lesz).
Az albumon található egy két részből álló dal is. A Forest pt. I-II miben másabb, mint a többi?
A „Forest” első és második része az album kulcsfontosságú részeit testesíti meg. A testvérek maguk mögött hagyják a civilizációt és megteszik első lépésüket a vad természetbe. Először a természet komor oldalát ismerik meg, minden ijesztő és idegen. De ahogy haladnak tovább az erdő szívébe, kezdik megismerni a pozitív oldalát is. Hallhatod a váltást a dalokban. Talán az embereknek jobban az anyatermészet felé kellene fordulniuk – az élővilággal való kapcsolat nélkül az élet sem lenne lehetséges.
A Lifeforce kiadóhoz szerződtetek és augusztus végén jelenik meg a lemez. Miért éppen őket választottátok? Szerinted ezek után mennyire fog felfelé ívelni a zenekar?
Miután elküldtem a demó CD-t a Lifeforce Records-nak, Stefan felvette velem a kapcsolatot és egyértelművé tette, hogy tetszik neki az albumunk és érdekelt a megjelentetésében. Lerendeztük a formaiságokat és aláírtuk a papírt. Nagyon örülünk, hogy velük dolgozhatunk.
Kinek ajánlanád a zenédet? Mennyire neveznéd könnyen befogadhatónak?
Azoknak ajánlanám a zenénket, akik szereti a hangulatos melankolikus zenét. A post rocktól a black metálig, crust punktól a dallamos death metálig, hardcore-tól a gótig, folktól az indi-ig vagy alternatívig.
Van pár nehezen „emészthető” dalunk. Úgy vélem egy-két alkalomnál többször kell meghallgatni őket, de azt mondanám, hogy aki szereti a hangulatos, heves zenét, az mindenképp próbálja ki a „The Elk”-et.
A lebegő és nyomasztó utazásunk végén, ami a zenehallgatás végét jelenti, azt hiszem sokan fognak nyomni egy repeat gombot. Gratulálok a munkátokhoz. Sok sikert kívánok!

Thränenkind was formed back in 2007 at South-Germany. What was it that made you realize, you have to make a band like this?
The band was founded by me and an old friend of mine in 2007. We founded the band, because we wanted to express ourselves through dark, emotional and melancholic music. We were always into metal and punk and we shared the same taste in music. He had a drumkit and I had a guitar, so we decided to make music together. At that time we started with some experimental black metal songs. We wanted to create a desolate and depressive atmosphere, but we also added some positive and hopeful elements. Our first output was “Eine Momentaufnahme – Der Rest ist nur Einsamkeit”.
The overall picture of “The Elk” is quite intriguing and good. On one hand, we have this raging anger, but on the other, harmonies of deep emotions. How do you make songs; what does a song require to be a real Thränenkind masterpiece?
Whenever I am inspired and in the right mood, I take my guitar. After a while I have some melodies which I write down. After that I record some of them and I think about the drums for the song. I listen to the “songs in progress” over and over again, to find out what needs to be changed or improved. The other bandmembers tell me what they think about the songs, but until now I am writing the music on my own.
A Thränenkind song needs to be melancholic I think. I try to create a haunting atmosphere, sometimes dark and sad, sometimes more aggressive, sometimes depressive, but always with this glimmer of hope, I already spoke about.
What modifications and changes did you make during studio recordings?
We didn’t change too much in the studio. Martin (Agrypnie), who helped to record the guitars of the album had an impact on the feeling of course, and added some of his ideas. We (Martin, Max – our sound engineer, and I) also decided to make a few other small modifications like changing the picking speed or deciding on the number of guitar tracks at a certain part. Most of the time, I have a good idea of what sounds or effects I want and then we work until the song gets there. Other times the decisions were made in the mix (i.e. a formerly clean guitar got a crunchy sound).
On the album, we can find a two part song. What does Forest I-II have, that the others don’t?
“Forest” Pt I and II seize one of the key aspects of the album. The siblings leave civilization behind and take their first steps into feral nature. At first they experience the gloomy side of nature, they feel afraid and foreign. But as they step through the veil into the heart of the forest, they begin to recognize the positive side. You can hear this shift between the songs. Maybe people today should think about turning more towards Mother Earth – without intact ecosystems our lives would not be possible.
You’ve made a deal with the publisher Lifeforce, and the album will be released at the end of August. Why did you choose them? How do you feel, will the band go upwards from now on?
After I sent a demo CD to Lifeforce Records, Stefan contacted me and made clear, that he likes our album and that he was interested in releasing it. We clarified the formalities and we signed the deal. Now, we are really happy to be able to work with them.
Who would you recommend your music to? How easy to digest are the songs?
I would recommend our music to everyone who is into atmospheric and melancholic music. From post rock to black metal, crust punk to melodic death metal, hardcore to gothic, folk to indie or alternative.
Some of the songs are not that easy to “digest”. I think you need to listen to them once or twice, but I think everyone who likes intense music with a lot of atmosphere should give “The Elk” a try.
The end of our floating and depressing journey means the end of the songs, and I feel that lots will push the repeat button. Congratulations on your work, the best of luck for you!
