A Thulcandra-t Steffen Kummerer és Jürger Zintz alapították 1993-ban. Mikor 2005-ben Jürgen öngyilkos lett, a banda szünetelt egy darabig. De mikor Steffen belebotlott a Thulcandra egy régi demójába, érezte, hogy azoknak az erőteljes daloknak nem szabad elveszniük, és megkért engem és a testvéremet, Sebastiant, hogy csatlakozzunk hozzá. Évek óta ismerjük Steffen-t, és tudta, hogy őrült Dissection rajongók vagyunk, így a döntés könnyű volt. A dobos Seraph lett, a Dark Fortress-ből, aki Steffen régi barátja.
Mi adta az inspirációt a megalakuláshoz? Mit takar a zenekarnév?
Steffent és Jurgent a Dissection, az Unanimated, az Eucharist, a The Moaning és a Vinterland inspirálták a Thulcandra alapításakor. Thulcandra volt a neve egy régi és nagyon nyers Darkthrone demo-nak. A demo neve a Silent Planet Trilogy-ból származik, három sci-fi regényből, ahol Thulcandra a neve a Néma Bolygónak, ami a Föld.
Mi történt a zenekarral a megalakulása és a debütáló lemez között?
Ahogy már említettem, Jürgen öngyilkos lett és így a banda elvesztette a fő dalszerzőjét. A banda 2008/2009-ben alakult újra. Minden tag elfoglalt a saját bandájával, így Jürgen öngyilkossága után Steffen az Obscura-ra koncentrált, majd úgy döntött, hogy ideje kiadni a már meglévő Thulcandra számokat. 2009 végére a kész számokat újragondoltuk, kiegészítettük új dolgokkal és megkezdtük a felvételeket a Woodshed Studioban.
Gondolom Jürgen Zintz öngyilkossága nehezen feldolgozható tett volt. Miért döntöttetek mégis a folytatás mellett?
Mert sok erő van a számokban és befejezetlen munkának tűnt. Ezért Steffen úgy döntött, új zenészeket keres, hogy újrakezdje.
A lemez dalai mennyiben a múlt és mennyiben a jelen szülöttei?
Majdnem az összes szám régi ötleteken alapszik, újrahangszereltük és új riffeket adtunk hozzájuk. Sebastian bemutatott néhány riff-et, úgyhogy kíváncsi vagyok, hogy fognak a következő albumok szólni, most, hogy összeálltunk egy bandává, ahol mindenki hozzáadhat egy kicsit a saját ötleteiből.
A lemezborító és a zene harmóniában van egymással. A koncepció a dalokra is vonatkozik? Miről szólnak a nóták?
Nos, köszönöm! Bár a Fallen Angel’s Dominion nem egy koncept album, a dalok nem kötődnek egymáshoz. A dalszöveg a halálról, öngyilkosságról, fájdalomról és egyéb közhelyekről szól. Nem akartunk semmi újat kitalálni, hanem újra felidézni a banda szellemét és a dalszövegek ennek a megközelítésnek a részei.
Gondolom már sokan mondták, a zenétek engem erősen a Dissection-re emlékeztet. Nem csak a dalok, a körítés is. Direkt törekedtetek erre a párhuzamra, vagy csak a végén döbbentetek rá?
Persze, sokat halljuk ezt. Nos, hülyeség lenne tagadni a saját és a Dissection-ben alkalmazott dalszerzési hasonlóságokat. Nem is ez a lényeg, mivel pontosan ezt a hatást akartuk elérni. Ismét elő akartuk hívni annak a zenének a szellemét, amin felnőttünk és amit nem sok banda játszik manapság. Thulcandra sosem volt és nagyon valószínű, hogy nem is lesz az a banda, aki díjat nyer valami új dolog kitalálásáért.
Talán sokan nem tudják, de a varázslatos borítókép Kristian Wahlin (Necrolord) munkája, aki a Dissection-nel is dolgozott. Miért őt kértétek fel a munkára? Honnan jött az ötlet? Volt előzetes koncepció arra, mit szeretnétek látni, vagy Kristian szabadkezet kapott? A festménynek van valami mögöttes tartalma?
Mind nagy rajongói vagyunk a munkájának és nagyon boldogak voltunk, mikor a Napalm befektetett a munkájába. Ha megnézed a végső borítót, látszik, hogy minden egyes centet megért, mivel teljesen visszaadja a „90-es évek hangulatát. Necrolord teljes mértékben szabad kezet kapott, és ezt a szabadságot abszolút tökéletesen használta fel.
Még talán korai a kérdés, de mennyire tetszik nektek a lemez, van valami, amit esetleg másként csinálnátok? Vannak kedvenc szerzemények?
Szerintem mind tökéletesen elégedettek vagyunk az albummal. Eddig nem érzem, hogy bármit is változtatnék rajta, de ahogy mondtad, egy kicsit még túl korai lenne ezt megítélni. Kedvenc számom pedig nincsen, szerintem az egész album nagyon jól sikerült, így nem tudnék kiemelni egy számot sem.
Koncerttervek már vannak? Merre lehet veletek találkozni? Esetleg Magyarországon is várható a felbukkanásotok?
Mivel Steffen sokat koncertezik az Obscura-val, Basti és én a Helfahrt-tal vagyunk elfoglalva, Seraph pedig a Dark Fortressel és a Revamppel dolgozik, nem egyszerű dolog összehozni egy koncertet. Játsszunk majd a Helion fesztiválon Münchenben és reméljük, hogy néhány nagyobb fesztiválon is jövőre, de ahogy mondtam, nehéz összehozni. Sajnos, nincs magyarországi koncert betervezve, de meglátjuk. Szerintem a dalok nagyszerűen előadhatók élőben.
Kikkel terveztek közös turnét? Esetleg vannak vágyak, kikkel játszanátok szívesen?
Nincsenek lefixált tervek, és nincs különleges kívánságunk bandák terén sem. Ha a turné egésze jól hangzik és össze tudjuk hangolni a bandát, hogy mindenki ráérjen, örömmel csatlakozunk.
Mi várható a koncertprogramban? Előkerül esetleg valami feldolgozás is?
Attól függően, milyen hosszú lesz a számlistánk, szerintem eljátsszuk a Fallen Angel’s Dominion teljes egészét, és talán egy-két plusz számot is. Van néhány kisebb élő adaptáció, amikor kettőnél több gitár van az albumon, de minden szám nagyszerűen szerepel élőben.
Mik a jövőbeli tervek? Mikorra várható a folytatás?
Szeretnénk jövőre néhány nagyobb fesztiválon játszani, ha pedig turnézhatnánk, az nagyszerű lenne. Ettől függetlenül, dolgozunk az új anyagon is, ami remélhetőleg 2010 vége felé kerül felvételre.
Van valami, ami esetleg kimarad, de fontosnak tartjátok elmondani?

Hi there! Greetings from Hungary! Congratulations for your debut album! Please introduce us the band.
Thulcandra was formed back in 1993 by Steffen Kummerer and Jürgen Zintz. When Jürgen committed suicide in 2005, the band was on a hold for quite a while. But when Steffen stumbled across an old demo of Thulcandra, he felt that the potential of the songs should not be lost and asked me and my brother Sebastian to join him. We have known Steffen for some years now, and he knew that we were die-hard Dissection fans, so the decision was easy. The position of a studio and live drummer was taken up by Seraph from the mighty Dark Fortress, an old friend of Steffen.
What provided the inspiration to be formed? What does the band’s name stand for?
Thulcandra was formed by Steffen and Jurgen to create music in the vain of Dissection, Unanimated, Eucharist, The Moaning and Vinterland. The name Thulcandra is the name of an old and very rough Darkthrone demo. The name of that demo derives from The Silent Planet-Trilogy, three science fiction novels, in which Thulcandra is the name of The Silent Planet, which is Earth.
What happened to the band between the formation and the release of the first album?
As mentioned above, Jürgen commited suicide, and with the loss of one of the main songwriters the band was on a hold for several years, but was reformed around 2008/2009. All members of Thulcandra are busy with their own bands, so after Jurgen’s suicide Steffen was concentrating on Obscura , but then decided that it was time to finally release the existing Thulcandra tracks. By the end of 2009 the existing songs had been rearranged and completed with new material, and we began the recordings at Woodshed Studio.
I suppose the news of Jürgen Zintz’s suicide was hard to elaborate. Why did you decide to carry on the work?
Because there was a lot of potential in the songs, and it felt like unfinished business. Therefore, Steffen decided to look for new musicians to start anew.
To what extent are the songs from the past and from the present?
Almost all of the songs are based on old ideas, though they have been rearranged and new riffs have been added. Sebastian introduced a few riffs to the album, and it will be interesting to see, how the upcoming albums will sound, now that we are a proper band again, where everyone can bring a little bit more of his own style into the mix.
The cover design and the music match each other brilliantly. Does this concept apply to the songs as well? What are the songs about?
Well, thank you! However, Fallen Angel’s Dominion is not a concept album, the songs are not conected with each other. The lyrics are about death, suicide, pain, and other cliches. Once again the idea was not to create something new, but the re-capture a spirit, and the lyrics are a part of that approach.
I believe many have told you that your music resembles to Dissection’s songs. Not only the music, but the garnishing as well. Did you want it to be so, or it turned out at the end?
Yes, of course, we hear that a lot. Well, it would be ridiculous to deny the similarities between our songwriting and Dissection’s. But anyway, that’s not the point, as that is exactly the effect we wanted to create. We wanted to re-evoke the spirit of the music we grew up with and wich is not played by many bands these days. Thulcandra was never, and very likely will never be, about winning a price for innovation.
Probably not too many know, but the album art has been made by Kristian Wahlin (Necrolord), who worked with Dissection as well. Why was he the one to be asked for this work? Where did the idea come from? Did you have a preliminary conception for what you wanted to see, or was he granted a free hand? Does the painting have some underlying content?
We are all great fans of his works, and we were very glad when Napalm invested the money for him. If you look at the final cover-artwork, it was worth every cent, as it just perfectly captures that spirit of the 90ies we wanted to achieve. Necrolord was granted absolutely free hand for the artwork, and he used that freedom perfectly well.
Maybe it is an early question to ask, but how much do you like the album? Is there anything you would do in a different way? Do you have any favourites?
I think we all are perfectly happy with the album and the way it turned out. So far, I wouldn’t change anything about it, but as you say, it might be a little bit too early to really judge that. As for favourite tracks, no there isn’t one, I belive that the album as a whole blends together very well, so I couldn’t say that there is a track that stands out from the others.
Do you have plans for the concerts? Where can the fans see you? Is it possible that you come to Hungary?
As Steffen has a lot of concerts with Obscura, Basti and I are busy with Helfahrt and Seraph is working with Dark Fortess and Revamp, it is not easy for us to play live. We will be playing at the Helion Festival in Munich and we hope that we can play some of the bigger festivals next year, but as said, it is quite complicated. Unfortunately, there are no plans for Hungary so far, but we”ll see what we can do, as I belive that the songs would work extremly well live.
With whom are you planning a joint-tour? Do you have any wishes to play together with someone?
There are no fixed plans as of yet, and we don’t prefer any band or would exclude another. If the package of the tour sounds good and we can mangage to get all member together without interfering with our other bands, we will gladly join a tour.
What can be expected in the tracklist? Are there any adaptations?
Depending on how long our setlist will be, I’d assume that we just play the Fallen Angel’s Dominion album as it is, but we’d probably have to omit a track or two. There are some minor live adaptions where there are more than two guitars on the album, but all the songs work just fine on stage.
What are your plans for the future?
We”d love to play some of the bigger festivals next year, and if a tour were possible, that would be great, too. Apart from that, we are working on new material and are preparing our next album, which we will hopefully record somewhere around the end of 2010.
