Tommy, tavaly volt 20 éve annak, hogy megjelent a Vain klasszikus No Respect albuma, amit, ha jól tudom egy turné keretén belül meg is ünnepeltetek, mégpedig a klasszikus felállással. Hogy sikerültek a bulik? Milyen érzés volt újra játszani azokat a fantasztikus nótákat?
Nagyszerű volt. A legjobb rész, leszámítva, hogy a legjobb barátaimmal játszhattam, látni, hogy még ennyi év után is ilyen sok ember eljött a show-ra. Nagyon jól éreztem magam.
Annak idején mind a sajtó, mind a rajongók kajálták a lemezt, mégsem jött össze az áttörés, pedig köröket vertetek az olyan csapatokra, mint a Poison, a Warrant, a Cinderella, hogy csak párat említsek. Ennek mi volt az oka?
Több dolog miatt volt így. Nem emelhetsz ki csak egy dolgot és mondhatod, hogy, na ez volt az oka, hogy a Vain nem lett olyan sikeres, mint az általad említett bandák.
Először a kiadónkat eladták egy másiknak. Az új kiadó azt akarta, hogy fejezzük be a turnét és az új albumot ne a régi anyacégnél készítsük, hanem az újnál. Ez az új cég pedig nem úgy promotálta a No Respect-et ahogy kellett volna és nem is nyomott új másolatokat belőle. Szó szerint elkelt az összes, No Respect album az Államokban.
Még belső viszályok is voltak az amerikai és az európai Island között. Ez miatt az európai turnénk meg is szakadt. Elég nyomasztó időszak volt. Az a helyzet állt elő, hogy ami elromolhat, az el is romlik. Ettől függetlenül sikeresek voltunk és sok támogatást kaptunk a sajtótól és a rajongóktól is.
Idén pedig az All Those Strangers jelent meg újra, melynek hivatalosan 1991-ben kellett volna kijönnie, de az Island anyagi összeomlása miatt erre már nem került sor. A kiadó elégedett volt amúgy az anyaggal? Méltó folytatása volt a No Respectnek az a lemez?
Igen, nagyszerű lemez lett. Imádom. Menjetek és vegyétek.. MOST!! 🙂 hahah!!
Igen, az Island tökéletesen elégedett volt vele, nagyszerű folytatása a No Respectnek. Elhívtuk őket meghallgatni a számokat, mielőtt felvettük volna a lemezt.
Biztosra akartunk menni, hogy mindenkinek tetszeni fog a lemez.
Azt olvastam, hogy 1991-ben mind te, mind Danny West gitáros kiléptetek a Vainből. Mit csináltál ezután? Beszélnél részletesen arról, hogy milyen csapatokban fordultál meg a Vain után?
Danny és én nem léptünk ki a Vain-ből. Davy LA-be ment Ash-sel, Jamie pedig Steven Adlerrel játszott az új bandájukban, a Roadcrew-ban. Danny úgy döntött, hogy nem csatlakozik. Nem akarták, hogy én doboljak, mivel ott volt Adler, így én San Fransiscoban dolgoztam az új bandámmal, a Shine-nal, amit később Loaded-re neveztünk át.
Aztán vége lett a bandának és egy nagyszerű Punk/Metal bandában, a Clarke Nova-ban játszottam. Átturnéztuk a nyugati partot, majd mindenki más zenei irányban képzelte el a jövőt. Ezután jött a BloodRoses, ami egy alt country banda, melyben Michelle Muldrow basszerozott és énekelt. Ez idő tájt, elkezdtem zenélni a 4Non Blondes-ból ismert Linda Perry-vel, majd egy nagyszerű power pop bandánál voltam, a Blue Sky Roadster-nél, ami később Single néven futott.
Kiadtunk néhány lemezt, ami még mindig megtalálható online, az Amazonon vagy iTunes-on.
A Single-s srácok átköltöztek LA-be és különféle projecteken kezdtek el dolgozni. Elkezdtem beugró dobosként dolgozni. Todd, az énekes és fő dalszövegíró elkezdett írni TV-knek és filmekbe, valamint a Meadows nevű banda frontembere lett, melynek első lemezén játszottam. A Fountains of Wayne-s Brian Young játszott a Meadows második albumán, mostanra pedig ketten osztjuk meg egymást közt a Meadows-ban a dobolási feladatokat. Aki épp a városban van, az játszik.
Ha nem tévedek, a ’90-es évek közepén, San Franciscoból Los Angelesbe költöztél, ennek mi volt az oka?
2003-ig nem költöztem LA-be. Amiért pedig leköltöztem, az volt, hogy sok beugrós munkám volt dobosként. Rengeteg különféle felvételen játszottam.
Így az ingázás helyett fogtam magam, és leköltöztem Dél-Kaliforniába.
Milyen volt a (metal) zenei élet akkoriban Los Angelesben? Könnyedén ment a beilleszkedésed? Egyetértesz azzal, hogy a ’80-as években a glam/hajbandák fellegvára volt L. A.?
Teljesen beilleszkedtünk LA-be, de a zenéhez képest, amit játszottunk, teljesen más beállítottságúak voltunk. Súlyosabban szóltunk és a számaink nem szóltak olyan vidáman, mint az akkori LA-s bandáké. A Guns n’ Roses-t kivéve, persze. Talán a zenénket tekintve, hozzájuk közelebb álltunk.
Igen, LA akkoriban az ilyen természetű bandák fellegvára volt. Az emberek szerte az országból LA-be költöztek, abban reménykedve, hogy ők lesznek az új Poison vagy Warrant.
Jelenleg, manapság a country színtéren mozogsz, mindig is vonzódtál a country zenéhez? Kissrácként milyen zenéken nőttél fel?
Mindig is szerettem a country-t, mivel a családom mindig azt hallgatott. Johnny Cash és George Jones dalokat énekeltünk. A nagyanyám úgy akart énekelni, mint Dolly Parton. Persze tinédzserként minden ellen lázadsz, amit a családod szeret, úgyhogy hagytam a country-t és metal, punk zenében mozogtam.
Amikor 2003-ban elköltöztem LA-be, csak úgy bezuhantam az alternatív LA country színtérre.
Ott kezdtem el dobosként dolgozni és természetesnek tűnt számomra, mivel ez volt a zenei gyökerem.
Első lemezed 2006-ban jelent meg Blues And Blacks címmel, mondanál pár szót olvasóinknak erről az anyagról?
A Blues and Blacks csak egy EP volt, csak néhány demo-t vettünk fel olyan számokból, amiket akkoriban írtam. Csak meg akartam csinálni, hogy megmutassam magamnak, hogy össze tudok rakni egy saját felvételt. Inkább ilyen gyakorlás volt az, mint sem egy igazi lemez. Egy művészi project az első számokból, amit valaha írtam.
Idén már második lemezed jelent meg a Dream California, vannak-e különbségek, hasonlóságok az első lemez és az új között?
Ez az idei első lemezem. Művészként pedig a második. A különbségeket tekintve, szerintem jobb énekes, író, gitáros és dobos lettem a Dream California-n. Elég sötét helyen voltam, mikor megírtam a Blues and Blacks számait, így, remélhetőleg, az emberek sokkal pozitívabbnak tekintik majd a Dream California-t. Az a nyilvánvaló különbség, hogy ez egy teljes album a korábbi EP-ket tekintve. Nagyon örülök és büszke vagyok a lemezre és alig várom már, hogy élőben játszhassam a számokat. Szerintem mindenki jól fogja magát érezni, ha eljön a koncertre. Nagyszerű bandám van.
A Tell Me What You Want-ot a testvéredről írtad, mi ihlette a dalt? Miről szól?
A Tell Me What You Want igazából a nővéremről szól, nem a bátyjámról. Elég sok szarásgon ment keresztül a seggfej ex-férje miatt, és nagyon aggódtam érte és a csodás unokaöcséimért és egy nap elkezdtem énekelni: Mondd el mit akarsz, mondd el mire van szükséged, mondd el mit szeretsz, mondd el az álmaid.
Innen indult. Az átkötő részhez akartam írni, amit a nővérem mondott el, így felkértem Kirsten Stone-t, hogy énekelje fel és írjon egy két sort, hogy egy nő szemszögéből szóljon ez a rész, ne pedig egy férfi akarja megérteni, mit akar egy nő. Tudjuk, hogy ez nem vezet sok jó dologhoz 🙂 haha!
Igaz, hogy a Dream California volt a legelső dal, amit szólóművészként írtál? Miért csak most került felvételre?
A Dream California az első dal, amit írtam, igen. Azért most jött csak ki, mert beletelt pár évbe míg összeraktam az albumot. Nem adhattam ki single lemezként. Biztosra akartam menni, hogy körbevegye sok szám, ami valamilyen formában kötődik hozzá. Több számot is írtam, és ki akartam választani a legerőteljesebbeket közülük. Ez minden. Tudtam, hogy nem tűntek el ezek a dolgok, mindig a fejemben voltak, csak várni kellett, míg kijönnek.
A lemezen van egy Linda Perry feldolgozás is a Jackie, ő nagy névnek számít odahaza a szakmában, tehát a country színtéren?
A Jackie-t valójában Linda Perry írta és csak feldolgoztam. Én doboltam, mikor élőben adta elő. … nem igazán tartozik egyik színtérhez sem, ő színtereket teremt. Nagyszerű író és producer. Mindig is szerettem énekelni a Jackie-t, így megkértem, felrakhatom-e a lemezre, ő pedig igent mondott és ezért köszönöm neki.
Felvetted a művésznő Grammy díj nyertes Beautiful című nótáját is, sőt színpadon is szerepeltél vele, ahol nemcsak az ő dalait játszottad, hanem Led Zeppelin feldolgozásokat is, igaz? Ennyire szoros együttműködés, barátság szövődött köztetek?
Linda egy jó barát. Nem látom annyiszor, ahányszor szeretném. Mindketten szuper elfoglaltak vagyunk. Ő kiváltképp. De mindig, mikor találkozunk, olyan mintha csak tegnap láttam volna. Ő a legjobb.
Dwight Yoakam és Lucinda Williams zenekarainak tagjai segítettek a lemez felvételeinél, róluk mit kell tudni?
Annyit kell tudnod róluk, hogy egyikük sem működött közre a lemezen. 🙂
Néhány tag a zenekarjukból játszott a lemezen, ez minden. Egyébként Dwight és Lucinda a kedvenc művészeim közé tartoznak, mindketten kiváló énekesek és írók.
A Tommy Rickard Records a saját kiadód, kizárólag a saját anyagaid kiadására korlátozódik vagy tehetséges country zenészek anyagait is kiadod? Akár metal bandák lemezeit is megjelentetnéd?
A saját kiadóm, de hamarosan hivatalos kiadóvá válik. Szólok, ha megtörténik. Mindenféle stílusban kiadok lemezeket. Csak a művészet és a kreativitás a lényeg. Metal, punk, country, hip hop, nem érdekel. Amíg elhiszem, amit a zenész üzenni szeretne a számokon keresztül, kiadom. Várom, hogy bekerüljek a zeneiparnak ennek az oldalára.
Hogyan népszerűsíted, promotálod a Dream California-t? Tervezel-e koncerteket, turnékat, fesztivál fellépéseket? Milyen visszajelzések jöttek eddig a lemezre?
Nagyszerűek a visszajelzések. Anyukám imádja. 🙂 haha!!
Komolyan, nagyszerű értékeléseket kap, és igen, tervezem az európai turnét idén nyáron. Remélem sikerül néhány fesztiválon játszani.
Jut-e időd a Vainre? Újra beindult a zenekar?
Van időm a Vain-re, valójában pont most készülődök a stúdióba. Davy és én átmegyünk néhány számon a következő lemezhez. Úgyhogy valószínűleg a Vain is aktív lesz a nyáron.

Tommy, it”s been 20 years that the classic album of Vain, No Respect was released, which, as far as I know, you have celebrated with a tour, with the original line up. How did the shows turn out? What was it felt like, to play those fantastic songs once again?
It was great. The best part, besides playing music with some of my best friends, was seeing and meeting all the people that came out to the shows even after all these years. It really was a great time.
Back then, the album was a great success at the press and the fans as well, though you couldn”t break through, however you were much better than bands like Poison, Warrant, Cinderella, just to mention a few. What was the reason?
It was due to many things. You can never just point at one thing and say, there it is, that’s the reason Vain never became as successful as some of the bands you mentioned.
First off our record company was sold to another company. That new company that at that purchased Island Records wanted us to finish the tours we had and get in the studio and make a record under our new parent company, instead of the parent company that owned Island at the time when No Respect came out. So our new parent company didn’t promote No Respect the way we would have liked, nor did they even print any more copies of the record. We literally sold out of all the copies of No Respect in the States.
There was also some inner record company politics between Island US and Island Europe. That ended up getting our European tour cancelled. It was all boring stuff like that. It truly was a case of everything that could go wrong went wrong, but we still were successful and we were still getting great support from the press and from fans.
You re-released All Those Strangers this year, which was supposed to come out in 1991, but due to the financial crash of Island it didn”t happen. Was the label satisfied with the stuff anyway? Was it a worthy continuation of No Respect?
Yes we did. And it sounds amazing. I love it. Go out and buy it…NOW!!! 🙂 haha!!!
Yes, Island was totally satisfied with it as a follow up to No Respect. In fact we purposely had them come to the rehearsals before we recorded the record.
We wanted to make sure that we were all on the same page and excited about the new record.
I”ve read that in 1991 you and Danny West guitarist quitted Vain. What did you do after this? Could you please tell us in details about what bands were you in after Vain?
Danny and I didn’t quit Vain. Davy went to LA with Ash and Jamie to play with Steven Adler in his band Roadcrew. Danny at the time chose not to go. They didn’t need me to play drums since they had Adler so I was in San Francisco working on a new band called Shine, which shortly thereafter became Loaded.
That band ran it’s course and then I started playing with a great Punk/Metal band called the Clarke Nova. We toured up and down the West Coast until we all wanted to go in different musical directions. Then I started playing with a band called BloodRoses. Which was an alt country band with Michelle Muldrow on bass and vocals. Right around that time I also started working with Linda Perry, formerly of the 4 Non Blondes. And after that I started working with a great power pop band called Blue Sky Roadster, which eventually became the band Single.

The guys from Single moved to LA and started working on tons of different projects.
I started doing session work as a drummer. Todd the singer and main songwriter started writing for tv and film as well as fronting a new band called the Meadows, which I played with and on the first record. Brian Young from Fountains of Wayne played drums on the 2nd Meadows record, and now he and I split drumming duties with the Meadows. Whoever’s in town plays drums that night.
If I”m not mistaken, you moved to LA from San Fransisco in the 90’s. What was the reason?
I didn’t move to LA until 2003. And the reason I moved down there was I had been doing a lot of session work as a drummer. Playing on tons of different records.
So instead of commuting down from SF to LA for work. I just packed up and moved myself and my drums down to Southern CA.
What was the metal scene like back then in LA? Could you fit in easily? Do you agree that LA was the citadel of the glam/hairbands in the 80’s?
We certainly fit in LA, but were a lot different as far as the kind of music we played.
We sounded heavier and had songs that weren’t quite as fun time sounding as the bands from LA. Other than Guns and Roses of course. We were probably closer to them as far as how we approached music and being a band at that time.
And yes LA was as you said the citadel for bands of that nature. People were moving from all over the Country to LA in hope of being in the next Poison or Warrant.
Nowadays you are quite into the country scene. Have you always liked country? What music did you listen when you were young?
I’ve always like country music, and that’s because my family all listened to it when I was growing up. We’d sing Johnny Cash songs, and George Jones songs. My Grandma would try sing like Dolly Parton. And of course as a teenager you rebel against all that is your family. So I left country music and went to metal and punk.
When I moved to LA back in 2003 I just kind of fell into the LA alt country scene.
It’s where I was getting work as a drummer and it felt very natural for me since it was in my musical roots.
Your first album the Blues and Blacks was released in 2006. Could you please tell us something about this stuff?
Blues and Blacks was just an EP. And it was a few demos that I had recorded of some songs I had just written. I wanted to put it, so I could show myself that I could in fact put out my own record. It was more of a practice at going through the process of putting it out, rather than actually a proper record. I guess it was kind like an art project featuring the first songs I had ever written.
This is your second album this year, the Dream California, what differences are there between the first and second album?
This is my firs record this year. And my second release as an artist. As far as differences, I’d like to think I’ve become a better singer, writer, guitar player, and drummer on Dream California. I was in a pretty dark place when I was writing the songs that ended up on Blues and Blacks. So hopefully people will find Dream California a bit more positive. The obvious difference is that it’s my first full length record as opposed to an EP of demos. I’m really happy and proud of this record. And I can’t wait to get out and play the songs for people. I think anyone that comes to the shows will have a great time. I have an awesome band.
The Tell Me What You Want is about your brother, what did inspire the song? What is it about?
Tell Me What You Want, is actually about my Sister, not my Brother.
She was going through some really shitty stuff with an ass of ex husband and I was talking to a lot during this, and worrying about her and my amazing nephews, and one day I just started strumming and singing Tell Me What You Want, Tell Me What You Need, Tell Me What You Love, Tell Me What You Dream.
And it just kind went on from there. I also wanted the bridge to be my Sister telling me what she dreamed of and wanted. So I recruited Kirsten Stone to sing the bridge and write a line or two so it truly came from the female perspective and not from a man trying to understand what a woman wants. We all know that doesn’t go well. 🙂 haha!!!
Is it true, that Dream California is your first song as a solo musician? Why did you record it only now?
Dream California is the first song I ever wrote, yes. And as to why it’s finally coming out now. Well, it did take a few years to put this record together. I couldn’t really put it out as a single. Truly I wanted to make sure that it was surrounded by songs that made sense sitting next to it on a record. I needed to write more and come up with songs I really felt strongly about before I put it out. That’s all. I knew it wasn’t going anywhere, it was always in my head waiting to come out.
There is Linda Perry tribute song on the album, the Jackie, is she a famous member of the country scene at you?
Jackie is actually a song Linda Perry wrote. I just covered it. And I used to play drums on it when she performed it live. And she’s not really part of any scene. Linda creates scenes. She’s a brilliant writer and producer. And I just loved singing Jackie so I asked her if I could put it on my record and she was cool enough to say yes, and I thank her for that.
You recorded her Grammy awarded song, the Beautiful and you”ve performed with her on the stage, where you played not only her songs, but Led Zeppelin songs as well, have you? Have you gotten this close to each other, you became close friends?
Linda is a good friend. I don’t see as much as I would like. We’re both super busy. Her especially. But everytime I see her, it’s like I just saw her yesterday. She’s the best.
Dwight Yoakam and Lucinda Williams were contributing to record the album, what should we know about them?
Neither of them contributed to the record is what you should know. 🙂
A few members of their band played on my record that’s all. As far as Dwight and Lucinda, they’re 2 of my favorite artists. Both brilliant singers and writers.
The Tommy Rickard Records is your own label. Do you release only your albums, or you help talented country musicians as well? Would you publish albums of metal bands as well?
It is my own label, but it will soon be an official label. I’ll let you know when that happens. I will be putting out records by every kind of artist. It’s going to be all about the art and creativity. Metal, punk, country, hip hop. I don’t care, as long as I believe what the artist is saying a conveying then I may put it out. I’m looking forward to getting on that side of the music industry.
How do you promote Dream California? Are you planning to do concerts, performs on festivals? What feedbacks have you received about the album so far?
It’s been getting great feedback. My mom likes it a lot. 🙂 haha!!!!
Seriously, it’s been getting really great reviews. And yes, I am planning a tour of Europe this Summer. And I hope to hit a few festivals while I’m there.
Do you have time for Vain? Have the band gotten back on track again?
I do have time for Vain, in fact I’m about to head down to the studio right now. Davy and I are going over some new songs for an upcoming record. So hopefully Vain will be over this Summer as well.
