Hell. Jó dolog hogy már 25 éve léteztek és még most is aktívak vagytok. Gondolom sok mindent megéltetek? Kérlek, beszélj a lényegesebb történésekről!
Hello! Tudod, minden show speciális számunkra, de a GWAR-ral a 2005-ös hamburgi show nagyszerű volt! Azok a srácok teljesen állatok! Egyébként az volt az első Troment show-m. Azután rögtön a „Metal Bash Roadkill” turnéra indultunk, ami nagyon jó volt. Jelenleg az új albumunkra, a „Tormentizer”-re és a 25 éves jubileumunkra koncentrálunk.
A zenétekre leginkább a thrash ‘n’ roll jelző illik. Szóval a thrashen kívül a heavy metal és a power metal elemei is megtalálhatók. Kezdetektől fogva ebben a stílusban mozogtatok? Mennyire változott a zenétek 25 év alatt?
Először 1987-ben kerültem kapcsolatba a Torment-tel, mikor meghallgattam a „Bestial sex” EP-t. A gyors thrash-metál lenyűgözött az első perctől kezdve. 17 évvel később pedig tagja lettem a bandának, és képzelhetitek mennyire büszke voltam. A zene sokkal rock’n’roll-osabb lett az évek során, ezért hívjuk trash’n’roll-nak. Az olyan kedvencek keveréke ez, mint a Sodom és a Motörhead. Ezt sosem terveztük így, csak így alakult.
Az eltelt időszakban elég sok doboscserétek volt. Mi ennek az oka? Mennyire stabil a jelenlegi felállásotok?
Az elődöm 2004-ben eltörte a lábát, pont mikor a banda stúdióba vonult volna, hogy felvegye a „Tormentation” albumot. A 20. évfordulóra szervezett show, a Metal Bash fesztiválon, már le lett szervezve, így nem volt visszaút. Gyorsan át kellett vennie valakinek a helyét, amire engem kértek meg. Néhány hónappal később azt az ajánlatot kaptam, hogy legyek állandó tag, a többi történelem. Az azóta történt egyetlen tagváltás a basszeros személyében történt, Jörn valaki sokkal élénkebb embert akart a színpadra. Tom-ot 1992 óta ismerem, frankó srác és nagyszerű kiegészítője a Torment-nek.
A Remedy Recordsnál most jelenik meg egy új stúdióalbumotok Tormentizer címmel! Milyennek érzed ezt a lemezt a debüthöz képest?
A „Tormentizer”-t nehezen lehetne összehasonlítani a „Bestial Sex”-el, vagy az „Experience A New Dimension Of Fear”-rel. A régebbi anyagok sokkal nyersebbek, mint az előző két albumunk. A „Tormentation”-t és a „Tormentizer”-t Eike Freese vette fel és gyártotta le, a Dark Age-től, aki nagyon érti a munkáját. Újra a stúdióban lenni, egy kicsit olyan volt, mint hazamenni.
Milyen volt az Eikey Studios-ban, mennyi idő alatt vettétek fel az anyagot? Eike Freeset producer munkáját mivel tudnád dicsérni?
Az új albumot idén januárban vettük fel Eike „Eikey Studios” stúdiójában. Nagyszerű ember, a földön jár és mindig nagyszerű ötletekkel áll elő a számok fejlesztését illetően. Már-már banda taggá vált a stúdióban töltött idő alatt, nagy segítség volt. A felvétel körülbelül 2 hetet vett igénybe.
A borító nagyon király, mert kapcsolódik a thrash metalhoz és hasonlít a korábbi albumokhoz is! Ki készítette és milyen ötlet alapján készült?
A művészt Dark Illing-nek hívják. Hamburgi és sok nagyszerű munkát végzett többek közt a Kneipenterroristen, a Wizard, a Paragon és néhány Motörhead és Saxon tribute bandák számára. Nagyszerű munkát végzett a legutóbbi albumainkon, kifejezetten a „Tormentizer”-en. Az ötletek, az énekesünktől, Jörn-től származnak. A fűrész már évek óta egy Torment-védjegy, ezt hívjuk „A Tormentizer”-nek.
Mennyire aktívan koncerteztek? Hol szerettek fellépni legjobban? Esetleg turnésorozat is várható? Voltatok már Magyarországon?
Naná, imádunk élőben játszani! Tömeg előtt zúzni a legnagyszerűbb dolog, legyen az bármilyen esemény vagy fesztivál. Sajnos még nem voltunk Magyarországon, de ez talán változik majd a jövőben.
Hányszor és mivel ünnepeltétek meg a 25. évfordulótokat? 🙂
A fő ünneplés helyszíne a legendás szabadtéri Wacken fesztivál lesz, itt Németországban. Ez lesz az 5. alkalom, hogy a Wacken-en játszunk és az összes albumról játszunk majd számokat, szétzúzunk dolgokat a színpadon és remélhetőleg hagyunk ott néhány süket metálarcot is. A show után pedig, természetesen, iszunk néhányat a rajongókkal.
Mit szólsz a metal marketinghez, amit a nagyobb kiadók elég jól alkalmaznak a sikeres eladás érdekében?
A pénz tartja mozgásban a világot, ez egy örök igazság. De a zenére kellene koncentrálni, mert ez az, amire az emberek költik a pénzüket, CD-kre és koncertekre. A bandáknak muszáj jó albumokat kiadniuk, ha így tesznek, minden rendben lesz. A nagy marketing több CD-t képes eladni, de ettől még nem lesznek jobbak.
Milyen lemezeket hallgatsz szívesen? Van 1-2 magyar banda akinek ismered a zenéjét?
Szeretem az Iron Maiden-t, Judas Priest-et, Motörhead-et, The Ramones-t és a hasonló zenéket. Az énekesünk, Jörn, imádja a Motörhead-et, Bulldozer-t, Rose Tattoo-t, Slayer-t, Kiss-t, Razor-t, Carnivore-t, Tank-ot, Venom-t, Bathory-t, Hellhammer és a Backwatert. Jörn-nek van egy Heavy Metal boltja, a Remedy Records, Hamburgban, ami kiadó és rendelni is lehet, így ismer néhány magyar bandát, mint pl. az Ossian, Aebsence, Ektomorg, Blind Myself vagy Kalapács.

Hello. It’s a good thing that you’ve been still around and active for 25 years. I guess you have lived many things. Please tell me about the important happenings.
Hi there! You know, every show we play is special, but in 2005 we played in Hamburg with GWAR, that was real fun! These guys are completely nuts! By the way it was one of my first Torment-shows ever. Right after that we went on ‘Metal Bash Roadkill’-tour, which was quite impressing. At the moment we focus on our new album „Tormentizer” and our 25th anniversary.
Trash’n’Roll would suit the most to define your music. So the elements of heavy metal and power metal can also be found in it beyond trash metal. Have you been playing this genre from the beginning? How much have your music changed under these 25 years?
First time I got in touch with Torment was 1987 when I listened to the ‘Bestial Sex’ EP. Fast thrash-metal, stunning from the very first moment. 17 years later I became a member of the band, and you surely can imagine how proud I was. The music became a bit more rock’n’roll over the years, that’s why we call it thrash’n’roll. It’s a mixture of our favorites like Sodom and Motörhead. This development was never planned, it just happened.
You had quite a lot of member changes at the drums. What’s the cause of this? How stable can you tell the recent lineup?
My predecessor broke his leg early in 2004, when the band was about to enter the studio to record the ‘Tormentation’-album. The 20th-anniversary show on the Metal Bash-festival was also already confirmed, so there was no way back. They needed a quick replacement and asked me to take over. Some month later I got the offer to become a steady member, the rest is history. The only line-up change since that is a new bass-player, because Jörn wanted to be more agile on stage. I know Tom since 1992, he’s a very cool guy and great addition to Torment.
Your new studio album, „Tormentizer”, is about to be published by the Remedy Records! What are your feelings about this album compared to your debut album?
‘Tormentizer’ hardly compares to ‘Bestial Sex’ or „Experience A New Dimension Of Fear”. The older stuff is way more rough than our last two albums. ‘Tormentation’ and ‘Tormentizer’ were recorded and produced by Eike Freese from Dark Age, and he did very good jobs on these. Being in the studio again felt a bit like coming home.
What was it like at the Eikey Studios, how much time did it take to record the stuff? What could you praise the work of Eike Freese with?
We recorded the new album in January this year in Eike’s ‘Eikey Studios’. He’s a very nice down to earth guy who always comes up with cool ideas to improve the songs. He became some kind of a band-member while we were in the studio, very helpful. The recording-process took about two weeks.
The artwork is extremely cool, for it is in connection with trash metal and it resembles your earlier albums as well! Who made the artwork and about what ideas?
The artist is called Dirk Illing. He’s from Hamburg and he did many impressing artworks for bands like Kneipenterroristen, Wizard, Paragon and some Tribute albums for Motörhead or Saxon. He did fantastic jobs on our last albums, especially Tormentizer. The ideas come from our singer Jörn. The saw is a Torment-trademark for years, we call her ‘The Tormentizer’.
Do you do concerts? Where do like to play the most? Can we expect tours? Have you been to Hungary yet?
Of course we love to play live! Rockin’ in front of the crowd is the greatest thing, whatever venue or festival it is. Unfortunately we’ve never been to Hungary yet, but maybe we could change that in the future.
For how many times and with what did you celebrate you 25th anniversary?
Our main celebration will be on the legendary Wacken Open Air this year here in Germany. It`s the 5th time that we play Wacken and we will play stuff from all our albums, destroy things on stage and hopefully leave some deaf metalheads out there. And after the show we’ll have some drinks with the fans, of course.
What is your opinion about metal marketing, which is used with great successes by the bigger labels for the sake of better sales?
Money makes the world go round, that’s a fact forever. But the focus should be on the music itself, because that’s what the people get for spending their money on CDs and concerts. The bands should release good albums, then everything is fine. Big marketing can sell more CDs, but they won’t get better by that.
What records are you fond of listening? Are there any Hungarian bands that you know?
I like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead, The Ramones and stuff like that. Our singer Jörn loves Motörhead, Bulldozer, Rose Tattoo, Slayer, Kiss, Razor, Carnivore, Tank, Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer or Backwater. Jörn also runs Remedy Records a Heavy Metal Shop / Mailorder and Label in Hamburg so he knows some Hungarian bands like Ossian, Aebsence, Ektomorf Blind Myself or Kalapacs.
