Johan, kezdjük a beszélgetést azzal, hogy mikor és miért lett vége a Soul Reapernek?
2003-ban lett vége. Nem foglalkoztunk vele eleget. Ki voltunk fáradva és nem a bandára koncentráltunk.
Véleményem szerint két nagyon jó lemezt készítettek, mekkora sikereket könyveltetek el azokkal a kiadványokkal? Előny vagy hátrány volt számodra a Dissection-ös múltad?
Igen is és nem is. Az emberek azt hitték, hogy a hangzás olyan lesz, mint a Dissectioné, de a végén inkább amerikai death metálra emlékeztetett. Az biztos, hogy egy Dissectionhöz hasonlóan nagy és elismert bandából indulni mindenképpen előny.
Azt olvastam a Trident biográfiában, hogy besokalltál a színtértől, pár évig távol tartottad magad tőle, ez azt jelenti, hogy egyáltalán nem foglalkoztál a gitározással, nem hallgattál metalt? Egyáltalán mi volt az oka annak, hogy egy időre leálltál?
Az ok amiért távol maradtam a nyilvánosságtól az, hogy akkor találtam meg a megfelelő embereket akikkel együtt játszhatok. A lemezen hallható számok pedig 2003 és ez év között íródtak. Próbálkoztam pár banda indításával, de a személyes dolgok nem működtek. A Trident 100% rendben van. A gitározás és a metál hallgatása pedig folyamatos számomra.
Köze volt ehhez Jon Nödtveidt öngyilkossága is?
Abszolút semmi.
Mivel már a Satanized időkben is együtt zenéltél vele, milyen ember volt ő egyáltalán? Jó barátok voltatok? Súlyos csapásként élted meg Jon halálát?

Mi késztetett arra, hogy visszatérjél? Hiányzott a dalszerzés, a koncertezés, a kreatív munka?
Az elvonulásom alatt is írtam számokat. Hiányzott már egy jól működő banda és a világkörüli koncertezés.
Tagja voltál a Deletionnek, erről a csapatról mit kell tudni? Hogyan jellemeznéd a debütáló korongjukat?
Az a banda számomra nem működött, így otthagytam. A debütálásunkat egy próbateremben vettük fel, szar hangzással. Inkább egy demóhoz hasonlított, mint debütáló számhoz.
Azért hagytad ott őket, hogy létrehozd a Tridentet? Hogyan jött létre a Trident?
Nem. Azelőtt hagytam ott őket, mielőtt a Trident ötlete felmerült volna. Alex-szal egy göteborgi kocsmában találkoztam, ahol zenéről és bandákról beszélgettünk, így derült ki, hogy mennyire megegyezik a zenei ízlésünk és egy banda felépítéséről való elképzelésünk. Szóval elhatároztuk, hogy csinálunk valami ilyesmit, és megalapítottuk a Tridentet.
A Trident egy project vagy egy teljes üzemmódban dolgozó csapat? Tobias és Alex elegendő időt tud szakítani a zenekarra a Necrophobic mellett?
A Trident egy teljes munkás banda, Alex és Tobias céljai pedig ugyanazok, mint az enyémek ezzel kapcsolatban, mégpedig az, hogy a csúcsra vigyük ezt az egészet, szóval bele fogják fektetni az időt ami ehhez szükséges.
Mikor álltatok neki a dalszerzésnek? Hogyan születtek a dalok?
Még 2003-ban kezdtem el számokat írni, amiket akkor még dobprogrammal teszteltem, hogy halljam hogy hangzik. Mivel akkor még nem volt bandám, így oldottam meg.
Nagyon brutális, ugyanakkor dallamokkal és lassabb részekkel is átszőtt black/death metal anyag a World Destruction, amely nem hordozza magán sem a Dissection, sem a Necrophobic hatását, önálló, életképes produkció. Úgy értem egyik zenekart sem akartátok utánozni, nem kiselejtezett Necrophobic és Dissection témákat akartatok újrahasznosítani. Erről mi a véleményed?
Amikor számokat írok, van egy elképzelésem a felépítésükről. Próbálok úgy írni, hogy ne ismételjek semmi korábbit. Próbálom újítani magam és új utakat találni az extrém metálhoz. Én magam például úgy gondolom, hogy sok riff az albumról emlékeztet a Dissectionre és a Soul Reaperre, és ez azért van mert én egyszerűen ilyen stílusban írom a riffeket.
Ki írta a szövegeket és azok milyen témákat érintenek?
Alex és Tobbe írják a szövegeket, a szívünkhöz közel álló sátánista témákról. A sátánizmust mi úgy fejezzük ki, hogy Sátán maga a belsőből jön, a fekete lánggal. Egy szabad lázadás és egy hatalmas „kapjátok be” a tömegeknek, szóval nem teljesen bibliai értelmezésben.
A honlapotokon az olvasható, hogy a korong 2009-ben jön ki. Ez elírás vagy valóban egy évet csúszott a lemez megjelenése?
Az album kiadása el lett halasztva más lemezek miatt, a Regain Records pedig a legjobb alkalomkor akarta piacra dobni az anyagunkat, mivel új banda voltunk, és az ilyeneket nagyon nehéz reklámozni.
Terveztek-e koncerteket, fesztivál fellépéseket netán turnét a Tridenttel? Vannak-e már konkrét események, fesztiválok, ahová már konfirmáltátok magatokat?
Igen, fesztiválok már be vannak biztosítva, és turnékat is tervbe vettünk. Eddig úgy néz ki, hogy a következő fesztiválokon fogunk fellépni: máj. 23: Festung Open Air, jún. 12: Dokkem Open Air, dec. 17: Eindhoven Metal Meeting
Mikorra várható a következő Trident lemez? Folyamatosan írjátok az új dalokat?
Igen, sohasem pihenek, mindig új számokat írok. A következő albumhoz már készen van pár szám, amiket akkor adunk ki ha eljön az ideje. Most viszont a World Destructionnel és a hozzá kötődő turnékkal foglalkozunk.
Azt hiszem túlzás nélkül állíthatom, hogy gazdag pályafutás áll mögötted, több csapatban is játszottál az elmúlt 19-20 évben, megtennéd, hogy mindegyikről pár szóban, mondatban megemlékeznél?
A legjobb emlék a Dissectionnel a Wacken 97-es fellépés volt. A Soul Reaper korszakból a Krisiunnal és Gorgoroth-tal közösen tartott turnénk volt a legjobb. A Satanizeddal inkább csak gyakorlásaink voltak. A Decameronhoz kötődő legjobb emlék pedig egy lengyelországi fellépés maradt. Tiszta kínszenvedés!
Melyek voltak pályafutásod legszebb évei, csúcs- illetve mélypontjai?
A fénypont a Dissectionnel volt, amikor az USA-ban turnéztunk az At the Gates-szel és a Morbid Angellel. A legrosszabb emlék pedig a szintén Dissectionös turné volt, amit a Satyriconnel tartottunk, és valami gáz volt a busszal. Csak lézengtünk a buszon és nem tudtuk meginni a whiskeynket.

Johan, let’s begin with when and why did Soul Reaper end?
It ended 2003. It ended because we were not reason with Soul Reaper any longer, it didn’t happen so much. We were all warned out and not focused on the band.
In my opinion, you created two exceptionally good albums. How succesful were you with those? Was your past in Dissection an advantage or a drawback?
Yes and no. People thought that it would sound like Dissection. But we sounded more as American death metal. Yes it is clear that there is advantages have been playing in a band that is as large and appreciated as Dissection.
I read in the Trident biography that you were fed up with the scene and stayed away for a few years. Does this mean that you didn’t practice the guitar or listen to metal at all? What was the reason behind your pause?
The reason I been away from the scene is because I have not found the right people to play with. And the songs that are on the disc range from 2003 to today. I have started a few bands but the personal chemistry did not work. Trident feels 100% right. I always practice the guitar and always listen to metal.
Does the suicide of Jon Nödtveidt has anything to do with this?
Absolutely not.
Since you’ve been playing with him already in the time of Satanized, what kind of person was he? Were you good friends? Was his death shocking to you?
No comment
What made you return? Did you miss the songwriting, the gigs, the creative work?
I have written music during that time I was away from the scene. I missed having a band that works and to go out and do tours all over the world.
You were a member of Deletion, what should we know about that band? How would you describe your debut?
That was a band that did not work for me and I left it. The debut with them was a shot in a rehearsal room with crappie sound. It is more like a demo than a debut.
Did you leave Deletion to create Trident? How was Trident formed?
No. I left them before I thought about Trident. I met Alex at a pub in Gothenburg and we started talking about music and bands and it turned out we had the same taste in music and visions of how a band should sound. So we decided to make something out of it and formed Trident.
Is it a project or a full-time band? Do Tobias and Alex have enough time besides Necrophobic?
Trident is a full-time project and Alex and Tobias have the same vision as I when it comes to Trident and our goal to reach the top, so they will put in the amount of time as it takes.
When did you start writing the songs and how were they written?
I started writing songs back in 2003 and I recorded the songs with drum machine to test how it sounds. Since I didn’t have a band then, I had to do so.
World Destruction is a really brutal black/death metal album decorated with slower parts and melodies, which does not show the influence of either Dissection or Necrophobic but is a unique and potent piece of music. I mean, it’s not an imitation of either band, it’s not about recycling old and thrown-away ideas of the two bands. What do you think about this?
When I write music, I have an idea of how to build the songs. I try not to sound like the material I’ve done before. I’m trying to renew myself and find other routes into the extreme metal. I myself think that some riffs on the album reminiscent of Dissection and Soul Reaper and that are because that is the way I write riffs.
Who wrote the lyrics and what topics do they touch upon?
It is Alex and Tobbe who are writing the lyrics and they write about the satanic topics that are close to heart. Our way of expressing Satanism is that Satan comes from inside with the black flame. A rebellion act freedom and fuck off to the masses, not in the way of a biblical figure.
According to your website, the album was released in 2009. Is this a typo, or are you really a year late?
The album was delayed due to numerous record releases and Regain Records wanted to release the disc at the right time because we were a new band and it’s very difficult to promote new bands.
Do you plan on doing gigs, festivals or maybe tours with Trident? Are there any gigs already fixed?
Yes, we have already booked festivals and tours are in the pipeline. So far these festivals are scheduled: May 23 Festung Open Air, June 12 Dokkem Open Air, 17 December Eindhoven Metal Meeting.
When can we expect the next Trident album? Are you constantly writing new songs?
Yes I never rest, I always write music. We have some songs already finished for the next album and we will release it as soon as its time for the new album to come. But for now we focus on World Destruction and the tours around that one..
I think it’s not exaggeration to say that you had a very diverse and „crowded” career, since you have played in several bands in the past 19-20 years. Would you say just a few sentences about your memories of each?
The biggest and best memory of Dissection was when we played at Wacken 97. Best of Soul Reaper memory was when we were on tour with Krisiun and Gorgoroth. Satanized we didn’t do that much, we just rehersed. Best memory with Decameron was a gig in Poland. Total misery!
Which were the climaxes and worst points of your career?
The biggest highlight was when Dissection toured the U.S. with At the Gates and Morbid Angel. The worst memory was when Dissection toured with Satyricon and the feathers on the bus broke down. We bounce around on the bus and we could not drink our whiskeys.
