Legalább magára irányítja a figyelmet… Hívhattuk volna „The Valley of the Winter Moon-Sun Pt.1”-nak is, de nem hiszem, hogy túl nagy lenne a különbség.

Miért döntöttetek egy ilyen kísérletezős anyag elkészítése mellett most?

Minden dal eltér a másiktól, mind témáját, mind hangszerelését tekintve.

Akkor ugrott be a melódia, mikor épp a stúdió-tanyakomplexumunk szaunájában melegedtem. Mathias szavai elmesélnek egy történetet, ami vélhetően sokakat megérint: arról a szokásunkról szól, hogy szeretünk dolgokat „majd egyszer valamikor” megcsinálni, néha hiányzik valami csodás dolog az adott pillanatból. Mint mikor az idősek halálos ágyukon siratják azokat a dolgokat, amiket elszalasztottak a karrierjükre koncentrálva.

A „No Good Story…” szintén az egyik saját dalom.

A folkos elemek (mind hangszerelés, mind dalszövegek terén) erősen lecsökkentek.

Szerintem most pusztán a képek lettek homályosabbak, a témák univerzálisak, mint mindig. Jó dolog kitágítani a látókörödet. Idősebb leszel, többet olvasol, megismersz dolgokat, nagyobb rálátásod lesz a világra.

Elég jók a reakciók, a népek igen bírják. Némi torokvagdosás és irodai dühkitörés van benne.

Röviddel a Stand Up And Fight album megjelenése után komoly tagcserén estetek át.

Köszönöm a válaszokat! Bármit hozzátennél, avagy valami utolsó üzenet a Kronos Mortus olvasóinak?

ENGLISH VERSION:

Answered by Olli Vänskä (violin, backing vocals).

Greetings from Hungary! How are you doing at the moment?

Very good, thanks – writing this in a plane, while flying to Germany to do this summer’s last festival show!

When I saw the first promo song and the title of your new album I was sure that it’s just a joke. Why are the front cover and album-title so simple?

Why? Would it be better if it had a longer name with a lot of text? At least it catches your attention… We could have called it the “The Valley of the Winter Moon-Sun Pt.1” but I don’t think it would have made a big difference. In a way, it cuts out the crap: this is us now, today, in 2013, and it’s nothing like we’ve been before. But, as said – it made you curious, and that’s good!

I feel a strong aspiration after freedom on Turisas2013 – to show you can do anything you want without coming up to the expectations of fans or the label. Why did you choose to make such an experimental material this time?

Yes, maybe there is something like that. We didn’t have pressure from the label: it was us who wanted to get back on the saddle fast. Since the previous two albums had been such concept- and story-driven, we decided to free ourselves from that leash and just do stuff that comes out. I also wanted to push the sound and push the tempo up a bit here and there. It’s good to take liberations sometimes, so you don’t get trapped in your own patterns.

Each song is very different both in topic and arrangement. Please, tell me some words about the concept and inspiration of each one!

The album includes songs from the main songwriter Nygård, guitarist Wickström and me. It’s most definitely our most varied album to the date, but mainly we just wanted to give ourselves a bit more freedom.

I don’t even know the background of all the songs… “The Days Passed” is one of mine, and it was melody-driven piece. I caught the melody while warming the sauna in our studio-cottage complex; Mathias’ words are telling a story that might touch many of us: it’s about our habit of doing things “then sometime in the future”, maybe sometimes missing some beautiful things in the present moment. Like some old people on their deathbeds, mourning of the things they missed while pushing forward on their careers.

“No Good Story…” is another of my songs. It’s basically tour stories and tales about what stupid shit you end up doing when you get wasted. Won’t get too much into the lyrics and their background. Fun song. I got the inspiration from some punk stuff, even pop punk.

I’m following the feedbacks on the web and as I see, they are very diverse. Did you anticipate such contrasting reactions? How do you feel about them?

Absolutely we expected them. Hate & love – when you get both, you know you did at least something right. We have a lot of fans that love us and want to see us as a strict viking metal band, singing similar songs about similar themes. Nice, but I’m not really interested in that. Maybe we’ll do something more similar stuff in the future, but I think this breakout is essential. There are enough of boring bands cashing in with the fame they achieved a long time ago.

The folk elements (both in instrumentation and in lyrics) were decreased a lot. What is the reason that you changed the “typical battle metal” topics (like history, wars, etc) to modern themes?

We’ve drifted away from straight folk stuff already since 2006 or 2007, and it wasn’t really prevalent even on the two previous albums. Lyric-wise, we’ve always had the bridge between the ancient and the modern. I think this time only the imagery is more blurred, the themes are as universal as ever. It’s good to broaden your horizon. You get older, you read more, get to know stuff, you get a larger view of the world. We’re not turning the jacket inside out completely, but sometimes new things get more interesting.

Are you planning to or did you shoot a music video for Turisas2013? If yes, can you tell us for which song and when would you like to publish it?

Yes, we did already actually – the video for “Ten More Miles” came out last week and is available on YouTube. It turned out pretty alright, people are really digging it. Some throat-cutting and office rage going on.

Short after the release of Stand Up And Fight album, you got over a serious line-up change. Why did three members leave the band? Also, why did you change accordion to keyboard?

Oh man, those were some shitty times. First Hannes Horma announced that he was going to focus on some studio work and studies back in Finland. I think there was also a serious illness in his family, so he wanted to stay more at home and not tour so much. Then Netta Skog had this nervous breakdown and went batshit in the tourbus. She had to fly home from Chicago on our U.S. tour. That was real fuckup, and since then we haven’t had an accordion. She really didn’t do that much musically anymore on SUAF, and we thought we would benefit more from some organ stuff, rather than find and have an accordionist in the band ”just because”. Robert joined us the next fall, and he’s absolutely great.

Then the next fall, we had a stand-in bass player Jukka-Pekka, but it soon became clear he didn’t like touring so much. He knew it already from his time in Ensiferum. Then Tude Lehtonen, the original drummer, decided he couldn’t be involved in the touring either. It’s the classic thing happening when guys are around 30 years old… There’s someone else at home calling the shots, and they start worrying about work and career. No hard feelings towards any of them, but of course this was difficult time for the band. Creatively, it didn’t change a thing, but especially missing Tude was a big thing in the nostalgia sense.

You are going to be one of the headliners of Heidenfest 2013 tour and then you’re going to tour in the UK. Are you also planning to visit Eastern Europe after these two tours?

Yeah, hopefully! I think we have some European touring lined up next spring, so maybe we have a chance to play in Hungary then!

You’re one of the most active touring bands in folk metal or even in the whole metal scene. How can you balance this intensive live activity with personal/family life?

We can’t! Nah, of course it is difficult at times. It’s just a question of priorities, and sometimes doing things for less money for publicity’s sake. This was one of the key things for some of the guys to make that difficult decision to leave the band, but I guess it just depends on what you want to do with your life. Now we have some great professional musicians in the band, so I’m very happy about the situation at the moment.

Thank you for your answers! Any additions or last words to the readers of Kronos Mortus?

Thanks for the support along the years! We’ve played great shows in Hungary, so I really hope we have a chance to return there soon. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the music – that’s what really counts in this whole circus anyway!
