Jörg, örülök, hogy elfogadtad az interjú felkérést webzine-ünknek, hogy vagy, hogy telnek a napjaid? Mi a helyzet jelenleg a Warranttal?
Kicsit bajos mostanában. Nem tudunk előre tervezni mert Thomas, a dobosunk több hónapja lesérült. Így meg kell várnunk a felépülését hogy elkezdhessük tervezni a következő koncertjeinket. Néha kemény az élet. Most nincs lehetőségünk a „Metal Bridge” népszerűsítésére.
Nálunk Magyarország az old school rajongók előtt ismertek vagytok, egyfajta kultikus státuszotok van, úgy hogy arra gondoltam, tartsál nekünk egy kis történelem órát, rendben van?

1983-ban alakultatok Düsseldorfban. Mi volt az akkori felállásotok? Hogyan jöttetek?
1983-ban kezdtük iskolai barátokként.
Thomas Klein, Lothar Wieners és én.
Heavy rock zenét akartunk játszani a Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Kiss, AC/DC mintájára, csak gyorsabban és keményebben.
Nagyon nagy Sweet rajongó voltam és az olyan dalokat szerettem, amikben jó hookline-ok voltak. Így az egészet összekevertük és olyan dalokkal kezdtünk mint a Ready to command és a Satan. A szüleim pincéjében játszottunk, szörnyűek voltunk, de volt pár jó dalunk. Szerettük a Demont és a“Night of the demon” számot. Első (és utolsó) feldolgozásunk volt.
Eleinte két gitáron játszottunk, basszus nélkül. Több próba után rájöttünk, hogy valami hiányzik. Valami mélyen nyomó hang (ha ha). Végül én lettem a basszusgitáros. Valakinek muszáj volt.
Ezután énekest kerestünk. A többieknek nem volt elég agresszív a hangja szóval ez a feladat is rám hárult. Talán ez volt a mai Warrant születése.
Felvettünk egy demót jó számokkal, de még mindig rosszul játszottunk. Egy rajongó elküldte a demót a Noise Records-nek és két másik kiadónak. Karl Ullrich Walterbach eljött Düsseldorfba. Ő volt a leggyorsabb így velük állapodtunk meg. Két hónappal később pedig boldogok voltunk, hogy Berlinben élhetünk, ahol felvettük a „First Strike”-ot.
A Warrant volt az első bandátok vagy már korábban játszottatok egyéb zenekarokban? Kik voltak a kedvenceitek, kik fejtették ki rátok a legnagyobb hatást?
Nem, a Warrant a második bandám volt. Az első neve Poison volt. De majdnem ugyanaz volt, mert a felállásunk Thomas, Lothar, én és egy másik énekes volt. Abban csak basszusgitáros voltam. Egy koncertet adtunk, ennyi volt. De szerintem az volt a Warrant kezdete.
Az első LP ami megvolt nekem a Sweet „Desolation Boulevard”-ja. Máig imádom. Ez a fajta zene, főként ez a dalfelépítés (kompakt számok zseniális csúcsokkal) volt rám a legnagyobb hatással. A Sweettől még az „Off the record” és „Give us a wink” is nagyszerű hard rock LP-k zseniális dalokkal. Ez nem az a Sweet amit az emberek a „CoCo”-ról vagy ilyesmikről ismernek. Ez a hard rock szakaszuk volt, saját számokkal. Szerettem még a „The Police”-t, Judas Priest, Saxon, AC DC bandákat….. Az egészet összekevertük, és gyorsabban és keményebben játszottuk. Így alkottunk egy új stílust (néhány másik bandával együtt), amit „Speed Metal”-nak kezdtek hívni.
Ami Düsseldorfot illeti, rajtatok kívül a Warlock (amely a Snakebite és a Beast összefonódásából alakult), az Assassin, a Deathrow illetve a Stormwind jött a városból, ezekkel a bandákkal jóban voltatok, támogattátok egymást? Milyen volt a klubélet Düsseldorfban?
Igen, jó kapcsolatot ápoltunk. Legtöbben egy nagy komplexumban, a „Ronsdorfer Street”-en próbáltunk. Mindenféle metál olvasztótégelye volt akkoriban. Először a „Stormwind”, majd a „Warlock” szomszédai voltunk. A Stormwind zenészei akkoriban nagyon profik voltak, és azt hiszem rendesen meglovagoltuk az idegeiket a mi vad és fiatal és nem túl profi zenélésünkkel (ha ha). Nagyszerű idők voltak. A padlás után lent a földön gyűltünk össze, beszélgettünk és iszogattunk. Láttuk a „Warlock” első koncertjét Düsseldorfban és mindannyian gondoltuk, hogy nagy karriert fognak befutni a jövőben. Ne érts félre, a Warrantról ugyanezt gondoltam (haha).
Egyértelmű volt számotokra, hogy a speed metal mellett törtök lándzsát?
Akkoriban egyértelmű volt. Ahogy említettem előbb is, a mi hangzásunk azoknak a zenéknek a keveréke volt, amit a korai ’80-as években hallgattunk. Sok-sok behatás. Sweet, Rainbow, Kiss, Judas Priest, Accept, Deep Purple, UFO és sok másik banda. Másféle zenét játszó zenekarok is, mint az Alans Parsons Project, The Police …. furán hangzik, de ezek az én zenei gyökereim.
Mindannyian imádtuk a kedvenc bandáink gyors számait. Például a Motörhead Ace of Spades-e, a To hell and back again a Saxontól, a Rapid Fire a Judas Priesttől és pár egyéb cucc…
Azokat a számokat hallgatva az agyunk ráállt a gyorsabb, agresszívabb hangzásra. A tudatalattid új számokat alkot, amik átugorják a határokat, új zenei területekre lépnek. De ezt észre sem veszed. Magadban ez egy normális érzés.
Ekkoriban, tehát a ’80-as évek elején/közepén, gomba módra kezdtek el szaporodni Németországban a speed és a thrash metal csapatok, amelyek, leszámítva a nagyokat (Kreator, Destruction, Sodom, Tankard, Running Wild, Grave Digger, Rage, Helloween), csupán kultikus szintig jutottak, gondolok itt olyan zenekarokra, mint pl. az Atlain, a Living Death, a Violent Force, az Assassin, az Iron Angel, a Stormwitch és még sorolhatnám, ti mennyire voltatok benne az undergroundban? Követtétek-e a Németországban zajló metal eseményeket?
A legnagyobb hibánknak az bizonyult, hogy korán leálltunk. Sosem voltunk annyira benne a szcénában, mint mondjuk a Helloween. Csak egy koncerten játszottunk velük együtt Hamburgban. Jó volt, de a „The Enforcer” után hirtelen leálltunk a Warranttal. Csak két kiadás jelent meg és a kultikus státusz, ami csak azokon a számokon alapszik, amiket régen csináltunk. Ez nem rossz, de nem is elég ahhoz, hogy szélviharként térjünk vissza. Másfajta zenével folytattuk, ami nagy hiba volt. Az én hibám ebben az volt, hogy nem vettem észre, hogy mi voltunk az egyike azoknak a bandáknak, akik új hangzást, új stílust hoztak létre. Azzal kellett volna folytatnunk ami szívből jött. Elkezdtünk olyan bandákat hallgatni, mint a Dokken, és azt mondtuk mi is tudunk ilyen amerikai glamour stílusban játszani (mint a másik Warrant, ha ha).
1985-ben két anyagotok jelent meg, a The Enforcer lemez és a First Strike Ep, viszont ezeket megelőzően rögzítettek demókat?
Igen, felvettünk egy demót 1984-ben a Stormwind énekesével. Ő volt a hangmérnök. Egy rajongónk ezt a demót küldte el a Noise Records, Mausoleum Records és Roadrunner kiadóknak. Olyan számok voltak rajta, mint a „Ready to Command” és „Satan”. Karl Ulrich volt az első aki eljött hozzánk Düsseldorfba, így a Noise Records-höz szerződtünk.
A mai metal generáció szerintem nem nagyon ismeri ezeket a kiváló, klasszikusnak nevezhető feltételeket, így arra kérlek, hogy beszéljél róluk részletesen!
A felvételeink a klasszikus „bandmaschine”-vel történtek. Semmi számítógép vagy multitrack rendszeres program.
A stúdióban élőben játszottunk. A dobossal együtt kezdtük felvenni a basszust és a dobokat. Ha hibáztál, mindkettőtöknek újra kellett kezdenie. Nem volt olyan könnyű, mint manapság. Az otthoni stúdiódban újra és újra megpróbálhatod. Meghallgatod és ha nem tetszik… nem probléma. Letörlöd és van még egy esélyed. Ha ha.
A korongokon szereplő figura egyfajta kabala volt nálatok, mint Eddie az Iron Maidennél vagy Vic Rattlehead a Megadeth-nél?
Igen, az volt. Akartunk egy kabalát. De nem vettük észre, hogy az elejétől lehetne a hóhér a kabalánk. Tetszett a borító és a téma, illett sok szám szövegéhez. 1999-ben, az első koncertünkön miután újra elkezdtük a Warrantot, megkértük Volker barátomat, hogy játssza el az „Enforcer” szerepét. Így lett fontos része a Warrant koncerteknek.
Oliver May gitáros mikor és miért hagyta el a zenekart?
Oliver a 2011-es wackeni koncertünk után ment el. Különbözött a zenénkről alkotott elképzelésünk (már sok éve). Ez akkor lett szembetűnőbb, amikor elkezdtünk új dalokat írni. Én egy az egyben az 1985-ös fílinget akartam visszahozni.
Egy internetes oldalon az olvastam, hogy 1983-tól napjainkig aktívak vagytok/voltatok, ez azt jelenti, hogy a Warrant sosem oszlott fel csak pihenőt tartott?
Igen, így van. Sosem oszlottunk fel. De a szünet néha nagyon hosszú volt (ha ha). A Warranttal 1999-ben kezdtük újra sok koncerttel. De konkrétan új albumot azt hiszem csak 2010-ben kezdtünk.
1984-ben feltűnt az amerikai hajbanda, akik szintén Warrant néven működtek és 1990-ben hatalmas sikert arattak a Cherry Pie lemezzel, nem okozott gondot ez nektek?
Számomra nem. Egyik napról a másikra abbahagytuk és eltűntünk! Szóval nem kellett emiatt aggódnunk. Manapság már jelenthet problémát – de nem nekem. Azt sem tudom rájöttek-e valaha hogy van egy eredeti Warrant Németországból. Mi voltunk az elsők. Erről tanúskodunk! Csinálhatunk egy közös turnét. Nagy különlegesség lenne a metál világban. Két teljesen más stílus egy szcénában. Asszem működhet. Gondolj csak a „Metal Bridge”-re (mosolyog).
Amennyire jól emlékszem, 1999-ben felléptetek a Wacken fesztiválon, az hogy sikerült? Hogy fogadtak benneteket a rajongók? Milyen emlékeket őrzöl a buliról?
Fantasztikus volt. Egy olyan bandának, mint a Warrant, a Wackenen fellépni nagyon különleges esemény. A szervező kívánsága volt – azt hiszem Karl Hansent kérdezte meg, hogy a Warranttal ez működhet-e. Fel volt dobva. Kösz mégegyszer Kai és Holger (Hübner). Így léptünk ott színre. Nagyon különleges alkalom volt számunkra – egy banda, ami soha nem használta ki a lehetőségeit, esélyt kapott a Wackenen játszani.
Nagy megtiszteltetés volt számomra hogy Kai ott volt az élő koncerten a tömegben, egy videón láttam. Őrület!!! De szerettem a sok kis német koncertet is, meg a néhány európai fellépésünket.
1999. február 27-én egy újjáalakuló koncertet adtatok Prümben, az Eifelben, ez volt a legelső koncertetek a visszatérést követően? Kik alkották a tagságot ekkor?
Az pontosan a Warrant újraalakuló koncertje volt. Csak egy alkalomról volt szó, de aztán felkértek minket a Wackenes szereplésre, így folytattuk. A felállás Oliver May gitárosból, Thomas Franke (az első UDO dobos) eredeti Warrant dobosból (ezt a tényt senki nem tudta) és jómagamból állt. Trióként játszottunk. Legnagyobb kívánságom az volt, hogy Thomas Kleinnel játszhassak. Mellettem ő volt az eredeti Warrant alapító tag. De sajnos egészsége nem engedte, hogy velünk játsszon.
1999-ben egy négyszámos demót is rögzítettetek, ennek mi volt a célja? Terjesztettétek?
Nem 1999-ben vettük fel, hanem azt hiszem 1988-ban és a „Glance” nevű új bandával csináltuk. Már nem tudom pontosan. Akkoriban elég fura és összekavart volt a helyzet.
1999-ben két régi számot vettünk fel, a régi Warrant korszakból olyan 1988 vagy 1989 környékéről. A „The Enforcer” és „First Strike” újrakiadásához vettük fel. A dalok címe „Flame of the show” és „When the sirens call”. Úgy gondoltuk, csak ez a két szám illett az 1985-ös Warranthoz. Nem teljes egészében, de többnyire.
2010-ben a Pure Steel Records cd-n kiadta a The Enforcer-t és a First Strike-ot Ready To Command 2010 címmel, két koncertdallal és kettő ’99-es nótával megtoldva, kinek az ötlete volt a korong?
Volker Rabe ötlete volt. Ő volt a Pure Steel Records tehetségkutatója, és a mi barátunk és koncertszervezőnk. Általa jött a lehetőség, hogy ennyi év után a Warrant megint színre léphessen.
A Keep It True VIII és XIII dupla DVD-k mennyi segítséget jelentettek a zenekar népszerűsítésében?
Azt hiszem segítettek, mert ez egy őszinte, igazi fesztivál a hagyományos metál nevében. Nagyszerű esemény. Jól szervezett és színtiszta metál.
Szeretem.
Ekkor szerződtetek a kiadóhoz? Hosszú távú együttműködésben állapodtatok meg?
Elkezdtük felvenni a kapcsolatot és gondolgodtunk egy új CD kiadásán. De nem voltam biztos benne, hogy ez lenne a helyes út. Ennyi év után lerombolhatod a státuszt. Így még sok évbe tellett, míg elindultunk ezzel a projekttel. Biztosra kellett mennem, hogy az új cucc illik a régihez, és hogy ezek a dalok átadják az extra tapasztalatokat amiket az elmúlt 25 évben zenészként szereztünk. Nagyon nehéz helyzet volt.
Csak egy CD-re szerződtünk.
2011-ben Oliver May újra elhagyta a zenekart, miért? Kiszállt a zene businessből?
Fentebb említettem. A szokásos „zenei ellentétek”. Nem, nem hagyta abba a zenélést. Saját bandát alapított.
Mi van jelenleg Thomas Klein gitárossal, Lothar Wieners és Thomas Franke dobosokkal?
Először is hagy mondjak valamit Lotharról. Nem ő dobolt a két lemezünkön. Lesérült és nem tudott játszani. Így ő csak egy „mentális dobos” volt. Egyben fontos szerepe volt a Warrant megalakulásában ennek a korai metál zenének a szellemében. Barátok voltunk: Lothar, Thomas és én, és mondhatom, hogy mi vagyunk a Warrant lelke.
Thomas „gyilkológép” Franke segített nekünk. Ő mentette meg a lemezeinket, és nagyszerűen játszott. Ő nyitotta ki a szememet zenészként hogy profibb zenét játszak.
Thomas Klein még mindig a barátom de sosem tudtunk újra összejönni. Szeretnék játszani vele a Warrantban de azt hiszem, túl késő. Meg kell küzdenie a saját démonjaival.
2011-ben megjelent a Special Edition for W.O.A. 2011, rajta az All the kings horses-szal és a Come and get it-tel, ezek voltak a legelső szerzeményeitek a visszatérést/újjáalakulást követően?
Nem, az abszolút legelső szám az újjáalakulás után a „You keep me in hell” volt. Ezek a második és harmadik dalok voltak!
Jelenleg Thomas Roseman és Dirk Preylowski van veled, az ő zenei hátterükről mi kell tudni?
Dirköt a düsseldorfi próbatermekből ismerem ahol az összes ismert (Warlock, Warrant, Assassin…. ) és ismeretlen banda játszott a nyolcvanas évek elejétől.
Kisegített mikor Oliver elhagyta a bandát 2011-ben. Az elmúlt években egyre fontosabb része lett a Warrantnak.
Ő a hangmesterünk és több thrash elemet hozott a Warrant hangzásába. Nagyon különleges módon illik össze minden, kontrasztot teremt. Sokkal dinamikusabbak lettek a dalok.
Thomas egy vad és fiatal dobos. Arno Verstraten (2005-2012) a munkája miatt hagyta el a bandát. Így megkértem Christian Sommert (a második bandám dobosa), hogy ismer-e jó dobost. Most ő dobtanár; ő adta meg Thomas számát. Nagyszerű fiatal srác, szenvedélyes dobos és ügyes technikus. És ami a legjobb: nagyon brutálul játszik.
Több mint egy metálzenész. Teljes körű dobos, bármilyen zenét eljátszik. De a metált szereti a nyers ereje és fülbemászó dalai miatt.
Tavaly adtátok ki a Metal Bridge korongot, mikor álltatok neki a dalok megírásának és hogy folyt a komponálás? Thomas és Dirk is részt vettek a dalszerzésben?
Én írtam az összes szöveget. Itt meg kell említenem, hogy Laura Vlaming barátom, aki most Kanadában él, besegített a szövegírásba.
Dirknek fontos szerepe volt a dalok javítgatásában. Igazi hangmester; szereti kutatni a legjobb hangzást. Ő állította be a gitáromat, mert egyértelműen jobb gitáros nálam. Én csak a dalszerzői alkalmakkor gitározok, amikor az új dalok alá játszok. A Warrant számok szerzése nem úgy megy, mint más metál bandáknál. A dalok és a hangszerelés is inkább énekorientáltak. Azért gitározok, mert nem akarom elveszteni a metálos érzést. Imádom a metál riffeket és ezeknek (szerintem) tökéletesen össze kell illeniük. Imádok jó hookline-os dalokat írni (gondolj a Sweetre)!
Thomas friss dobjátéka miatt lett fontos része a Warrant családnak. Ő nem az a tipikus metálos dobos. Más zenei háttérből jött, de megtalálta végül a helyét – a Warrant metálzenéjében (mosolyog). Jó ötletei vannak ritmusügyileg és a hangszereléshez is.
Véleményem szerint nincs okotok szégyenkezésre, hűek maradtatok a régi stílusotokhoz, csak mai, korszerű hangzásba ágyaztátok a dalokat, milyen visszajelzések érkeztek a lemezre? Ti magatok elégedettek voltatok/vagytok a végeredménnyel?
A visszajelzés remek. Sosem vártam ilyen pozitív reakciókat – a legtöbb kritika tökéletes. Tudnod kell, hogy az utolsó hivatalos lemez 1985-ben jött ki, így 29 teljes év maradt ki. Nem voltak igazából új dalok, így nagyon nagy meglepetés volt az eredeti Warrantot ismerők számára!
Talán nagy meglepetés azoknak az új metálrajongóknak is akik nem ismertek minket a ’80-as évekből. Ennyi év után visszatérni a színtérre viszont nehéz – a szcéna nagyon megváltozott. Persze ezzel tisztában voltam, nem gond. Én csak jó új számokat akartam csinálni az új bandám segítségével a korai nyolcvanas évek szellemében. És hiszed vagy sem, az új projekttel való munka olyan volt, mint egy időutazás 1983-ba. Az egyetlen ami számított, hogy metált játsszunk és új dalokat csináljunk mindenféle irány nélkül. Hogy azt csináljuk, amit szeretünk.
Az Ordeal Of Death és a The Enforcer újra felvett változatai is felkerültek az anyagra, miért ezekre a számokra esett a választás?
Az “Ordeal of Death” Dirk kívánsága volt, imádja ezt a számot. Én nem szerettem túlzottan az évek során, a hangszerelés nem volt elég jó. Így az az ötletem támadt, hogy rövidítsük meg a számot a harmadik strófát kiszedve. Dirk új áthidalást csinált és most annyira tetszik ez a szám, mint 1984-ben. Zseniális. Jó kis dübörgő középtempós dal nagyszerű csúccsal.
Az “Enforcer” egyre inkább kezdett fő dalunkká válni. Ő minden koncertünk szíve. Azt akartam megmutatni, hogy régi daloknak is lehet új arculatot adni, új modern hangzást mindenféle zökkenő nélkül. Egy követelmény van: a számnak időtlennek kell lennie!
Talán ha több felvételt csinálunk az elkövetkezendő években, akkor teszek minden lemezre két régi dalt.
A jövőt illetően mik a terveitek? Terveztek-e esetleg turnét? Mikor jöttök Magyarországra, lévén még sosem léptetek fel nálunk?
Ahogy említettem az elején is, nagy problémáink vannak jelenleg. Thomas, a dobosunk komolyan le van sérülve 2014 júniusa óta. Nagy szerencsétlenség, le kellett mondanunk a „Bang your head”-es fellépésünket, egy kisebb osztrák turnét, és egy madridi koncertet.
Reméljük Thomas mihamarabb felépül és mehetünk újra játszani.
Jelenleg promóciós feladatokat látok el rádión és egy átmeneti dobossal dolgozok.
És igen, szeretnénk fellépni az országotokban. Nagyszerű lesz. Meghívhattok minket, beszélek Volkerrel és megpróbálunk egy-két koncertet leszervezni Magyarországon. Szólhatnál is nekünk ha vannak király fesztiválok nálatok!!!

Jörg, thanks for answering these questions for our webzine, how are you, how’s things going for you nowadays? What is up with Warrant?
It´s a little bit tricky this moment. We cannot plan our next future because Thomas the drummer is injured since many months. So we have to wait for him to plan our next shows. Sometimes life is hard. There is no chance to promote „Metal Bridge” currently.
Here in Hungary you guys are known among old school fans, you have a kind of cultic status, so I thought you should give us a little history lesson, okay?
It´s a pleasure for me!!!!, Love to do it!
The band was founded in 1983 in Düsseldorf. How was the line-up back then, how did you start?
We started in the year of 1983 being school friends.
Thomas Klein, Lothar Wieners and me.
We wanted to play heavy rock music like Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Kiss, AC DC but more fast and hard.
I was a big big Sweet fan and I prefered songs with a real good hookline.
So we mixed it all together and we started with songs like Ready to command and Satan.
Playing in the cellar of my parents (they were really fucked up).
We played horrible but we had a few good songs. Also we loved Demon and the song “Night of the demon”.
It was our first cover (and our last).
First we played with two guitars and without a bass. After several rehearsals we realized that something was missing. A deep and pressure sound (ha ha).
So I was the one to play bass. Someone had to do the job.
Then we were looking for a singer. After two guys playing in the band but without the aggressive style I did the job again.
Maybe this was the birth of Warrant like you know today.
After recording a demo with good songs but still playing bad a fan sended the demo to Noise Records and two other labels.
Karl Ullrich Walterbach came to Düsseldorf. He was the fastest and we signed a deal that was no deal (ha ha).
But two month later we were happy to live in Berlin and to record “First Strike”.
Was Warrant your first band or did you guys play in other bands before? Who were your favourites, who had the greatest impact on you?
No Warrant was my second band. The first band called Poison. But it was nearly the same because the members were Thomas, Lothar, me and a seperate singer. I was only playing the bass. We had one show, that was all. But it was the beginning of Warrant i think.
The first LP i owned was „Desolation Boulevard” from the Sweet. I love it till today. These kind of music, especially this kind of songwriting (compact songs with a brilliant hookline) influenced me the most. Also the one`s from Sweet „Off the record” and „Give us a wink” are great hard rock LP`s with brilliant songs. It´s not the Sweet the most know from „CoCo” or something like that. It was the hard rock phase with their own songs. Also i liked „The Police”, Judas Priest, Saxon, AC DC….. We mixed it all together by playing it more fast and harder. So we created a new style (also some other bands). You called it „Speed Metal”.
Apart from you, the bands Warlock (from the union of Snakebite and Beast), Asssassin, Deathrow and Stormwind all came from Düsseldorf, did you guys have good relations, did you support each other? How was the club life there?
Yes, we had a good relationship. The most of us did the rehearsals at a great complex called „Ronsdorfer Street”. It was a melting pot for all kinds of Metal at that time. We started as neighbours of „Stormwind” and later „Warlock”. The musicians of Stormwind at that time were extremely professionell and i think we were riding on their nerves with our wild and young and not so professionell sound (ha ha). It was a great time. Up from the cellar we all met at the ground to talk a little bit, to have some fun and to drink. We saw „Warlock” at their first show in Düsseldorf and we all thought, that they will have a great career following in the future. Don`t understand me wrong. Depending on Warrant (ha ha) I thought exactly the same.
Was speed metal an obvious choice for you?
At that time it was obvious. Like i told you before. Our sound was a mix of all that styles we have heard in the early eighties. Many many influences. Sweet, Rainbow, Kiss, Judas Priest, Accept Deep Purple, UFO and many more bands. Also bands from other kinds of music like Alans Parsons Project, The Police …. It sounds weird but these are my roots of music.
We all loved the fast songs of the bands we liked. For example Ace of Spades from Motörhead, To hell and back again from Saxon, Rapid Fire from Judas Priest and some other stuff…
Listening to all that songs it opens your mind for being more fast, more aggressiv. In your subconscious you create new songs crossing the border, walking on new fields of music.
But you can`t realize. For yourself it`s a normal feeling.
In the mid- early 80’s speed and thrash metal bands have started to appear in Germany like mushrooms, and while some of them became big (like Kreator, Destruction, Sodom, Tankard, Running Wild, Grave Digger, Rage, Helloween), others have stayed in the underground, like Atlain, Living Death, Violent Force, Assassin, Iron Angel, Stormwitch and so on. How much were you guys involved in the underground scene? Did you follow the events of metal in Germany?
Our big mistake was stoping to early. We never were involved in the scene like for example Helloween. We only played one show together with them in Hamburg. It was great but after „The Enforcer” we suddenly stopped with Warrant like you know. Only to releases left and a cultic status after all this years. Our status is based only on the songs we have left. Not too bad but not enough to come back as a storm. We decided to go on with an other kind of music. A big mistake. My mistake was that i couldn`t realize that we were one of the first bands creating a new sound, style. We had to go on with that kind of music coming from the heart. We started listening to bands like Dokken and we thought that we can play songs like the american glamour style. (Like the other Warrant, ha ha).
In 1985, two of your materials have came out, the album The Enforcer and the Ep First Strike. Have you recorded any demos beforehand?
Yes, we recorded one demo before in 1984 with the singer of Stormwind. He was the mixing engineer. A fan sent this demo to Noise Records, Mausoleum Records and Roadrunner. There were songs on it like „Ready to Command and „Satan”. Karl Ulrich from Noise Records was the first to visit us in Düsseldorf. So we signed the deal.
Today’s metal generation might not know much about these excellent, classic recordings, so please tell us something about them!
We did our recordings with a classic „bandmaschine”. No computer or programms with multi track system.
In the studio we played live. I started with the drummer recording together the bass and the drums. If you have done a mistake both had to start again. It wasn`t so easy like today. You can do it again and again in your home studio. You can listen to it and if you don`t like it…. no problem. Delete and one more chance. Ha ha.
Was the figure on the cover a mascot for you like Eddie for Iron Maiden or Vic Rattlehead for Megadeth?
Yes it was. We wanted to have a mascot. But we didn`t realize from the beginning that the hangman can be our mascot. We liked the cover and we liked the theme. It fits to the lyrics of some songs. In 1999, when we started again with Warrant at our first reunion show, we asked my friend Volker to play the role of „The Enforcer”. So it became an integral part of the Warrant shows.
When and why did guitarist Oliver May leave the band?
Oliver left the band in 2011 after our show in Wacken. We had different opinions about the music (many years before). But it became more clear when we started writing new songs. I wanted to start exactly with the feeling from 1985.
I have read on a site that you are/have been active from 1983 till nowadays, so this means that you have never disbanded only had a hiatus?
Yes , you are right. I was never disbanded. But the hiatus sometimes was very long (ha ha). With Warrant we started again in 1999 playing several shows. But with a concrete new album we started in 2010, I think.
In 1984 a band appeared with the same name as you and had a big success with their album Cherry Pie in 1990, was this a problem for you?
It never was a problem for me. We stopped overnight and we were gone! So there was no need to think about this fact. Today it can be a problem. But not for me. Don`t know if they realized that there is the original Warrant band from germany. We were the first. They can testify!!! We can do a tour together. Maybe it will be something special in the metal scene. Two totally different styles in one scene. It can work i think. Think about the „Metal Bridge” (smile).
As far as I remember, you gave a concert on Wacken Festival in 1999, how was that? How was the reception from the fans? What memories do you have of that party?
It was fantastic. Playing at Wacken is something special for a band like Warrant. It was the wish of the organizer. I think he asked Kai Hansen if it can work with Warrant. He was excited. Thanks again to Kai and Holger (Hübner). So we entered the stage. A very special moment for us. A band, that never used their possibilities had the chance to play at Wacken.
It was a honour for me that Kai joined our show standing in the crowd. I saw him on a video.
Crazy.!!! But i also loved playing many little shows in Germany and some other countries we played in Europe.
You gave a reunion concert on the 27th of February, 1999. in the Eifel in Prüm, was this your first concert since the reunion? What did the line-up look like back then?
This was exactly the reunion of Warrant. We only wanted to play this single show. But than they asked us to play in Wacken. So we went on with Warrant. The line up was Oliver May on guitar, Thomas Franke (the first UDO drummer), the original Warrant drummer (noone knew this fact) and me. We played as a trio. My biggest wish was to play with Thomas Klein. Together with me he is the original Warrant founder. But unfortunately his wasn`t able to play because of his health.
In 1999 you have recorded a four-song demo, what did you want with it? Did you distribute it?
It wasn`t recorded in 1999. It was recorded in 1988 I think and it was a demo from our new band called „Glance”. Don`t know exactly. It was to weird and to confused at that time.
In 1999 we recorded two old songs. Coming from the past Warrant time I think 1988 or 1989. We did this record for the re-release of „The Enforcer” and „First Strike” by Noise Records.
The songs called „Flame of the show” and „When the sirens call”. We thought this two songs are the only ones fitting to Warrant as we know from 1985. Not exactly, but the most.
In 2010 Pure Steel Records have published on CD The Enforcer and First Strike by the title Ready To Command 2010, with a bonus of two concert songs and two tracks from ’99, whose idea was this album?
It was the idea from our booker Volker Rabe. He is the A+R from Pure Steel Records and our friend and booker. He gave Warrant the chance to join the scene after all this years.
How much did the double DVDs Keep It True VIII and XIII help in propagating the band?
I think it helped a little bit because this festival is a true one for all the guys, keeping the flame of traditional metal. It´s a great festival. Well organized and absolutely pure metal.
I like it.
Did you sign up with the publisher around this time? Do you have a long-term contract?
We started to get in contact and to think about releasing a new CD. But i wasn`t sure if it is the right way. After all this years. You can destroy a status. So it took many more years to start with this project. I had to be sure if the new songs fits to the old stuff and also that this songs can transport our new style with all the experiences from nearly 25 years as a musician.
Extremely difficult this situation.
We only have a contract for one CD.
Oliver May has left the band again in 2011, why? Is he out of the music business?
I told you before. The typical „musically differences”. No, he isn`t out of the business.
He founded his own band.
How are things going for guitarist Thomas Klein and drummers Lothar Wieners and Thomas Franke nowadays?
First let me say something about Lothar. He never played the drums on the two records we did. He was injured in a bad way and couldn`t play. So he was the mental drummer. But he was an important part founding Warrant with the spirit of this early metal music. We were friends. Lothar, Thomas and me and i can say, that this is the spirit of Warrant.
Thomas „killing machine” Franke helped us. He did a job and saved our records. But he played fantastic. He opened my mind of being a musician in a more professionell way.
Thomas Klein is still my friend but we never had the chance to come together. I would love to play with him at Warrant but I think there is too much time left. He had to fight with his demons.
The Special Edition for W.O.A. 2011 came out in 2011, containing All the kings horses and Come and get it, were these your first songs after the reunion?
No, the first absolut new song after the reunion was „You keep me in hell”. This songs were the second and the third songs!
Currently Thomas Roseman and Dirk Preylowski are with you, what should we know about their musical background?
Dirk I know from the rehearsal rooms in Düsseldorf where all the known (Warlock, Warrant, Assassin…. ) and unknown bands played since the early eighties.
He helped me when Oliver left the band in 2011. He became a big and important part of Warrant more and more over the last years.
He is the sound master and he filled the sound of Warrant with more trash elements.
It fits together in a very special way. It builds a contrast. So there is more dynamic in the songs.
Thomas is a young and wild drummer. Arno Verstraten (2005-2012) left the band because of his work. So I asked Christian Sommer (drummer of my second band), if he knows a good drummer. He is a drum teacher now.
And he gave me the number of Thomas. Thomas is a great young guy, a drummer with passion and a great technician. And the best thing: he plays extremely brutal.
He is more than only a metal drummer. He is a complete drummer able to play all kind of music. But he is in love with metal because of the raw power mixed up with catchy songs.
Your disc Metal Bridge came out last year, when did you start recording and what was the process of composing? Did Thomas and Dirk contribute to the lyrics and tunes?
I wrote all the lyrics. I have to mention that my friend Laura Vlaming, now living in Canada, helped me with the lyrics.
Dirk was an important part of fixing the songs. He is a sound creator. He loves searching a good sound. He arranged my guitars because he is definetely the better guitarist than me. I only play the guitar during my composing sessions. I play the guitar during singing my ideas. Composing Warrant songs it`s not the normal way like other metal bands do. The songs are more voice based and the arrangements are voice orientated. I play the guitar because i don`t want to loose the metal feeling. I love metal riffing and these two things must fit together in a perfect way (in my opinion). I love to write songs with a good hookline (think about Sweet)!
Thomas became a big and important part in the Warrant family because of his fresh drumming. He isn`t the typical metal drummer. Rising from an other kind of music now he realized where his place has to be. It´s Warrant metal drumming (smile). He has very good ideas for the ryhtm things and also for song arrangement.
As far as I’m concerned you have no reason to be ashamed, you have stayed true to your old style, while managing to embed it into the present, modern sound. What feedback did you get? Are you guys pleased with the results?
The feedbacks are great. Never expected this positive reactions. The most reviews are perfect. You have to know that the last official record is dated from 1985. Leaving 29 years behind without a sign from Warrant. No really new song. So this is a big big surprise for all the people who still knows Warrant, the originals!
And maybe also a big surprise for some new metal fans don`t know us from the eighties. But it`s hard to enter the scene again after all this years. The scene has changed totally. But I knew this fact. No problem. I only wanted to create some good new songs with the help of my new band, with the spirit of the early eighties. And believe me or not. Starting again this project it felt like a journey into 1983. The only thing that matters is playing metal and creating new songs without any directions. Only do what you like.
The newly recorded versions of Ordeal Of Death and The Enforcer have made it to the disc, why did you choose these songs?
“Ordeal of Death” was the wish of Dirk. He love this song. I didn`t like this song over the last years. The arrangement was not good enough. So I had the idea to shorten the song. No more third strophe. Dirk created a new bridge and now I love this song like I did in 1984. Brilliant. It´s a good pounding midtempo song with an excellent hookline.
“Enforcer” advanced more and more to our main song. He is the heart of every show. I wanted to show that you can give old songs a new face, a new modern sound without any problem. There has to be one prerequisite: the song has to be timeless!
Maybe, if we will do more recordings over the next years I will put two old songs on every new record.
What are your plans for the future? Are you planning a tour? Since you have never toured in Hungary, are you coming any time?
Like I told you in the beginning. Big big problems at the moment. Thomas, the drummer is injured in a bad way since June 2014. It´s a big misfortune. We had to cancel the show at „Bang your head”.
We had to cancel a little tour throught Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. We had to cancel a show in Madrid.
Hope we can stop this misfortune and Thomas will go on with playing as soon as possible.
At the moment I´m doing some promotion things on radio and I´m working with a short time drummer.
And yes, i would like to play in your country. It will be great. You can invite us. I will talk to Volker to try booking a show or more in Hungary. Maybe you can inform us about some cool festivals in your country.!!!
