Először is szeretnék gratulálni a High Speed GTO-hoz, igazán fogós kis anyag. Ha jók az információim, akkor a megalakulás után elég hamar fel is vettétek. Meséld el légy szíves a csapat eddigi történetét! Kik alapították, hol és hogyan találtatok egymásra?
Szólógitárosként szálltam be a White Wizzardba 2009 márciusában. Nem sokat tudok a banda azelőtti történetéről azon kívül, hogy nem igazán tudtak haladni. Az Over The Top-ot 2009 nyarán vettük fel Phoenixben Ralph Patlannel (Megadeth, UFO, Schenker). Hogy ki alapította, hol és hogyan, valaki mástól kell megtudnod!
Egy Craiglist-re feladott hirdetésen keresztül hallottam a White Wizzardról először. Januárban volt az első YouTube-os meghallgatásom, februárban átrepültem Detroitból LA-be egy élő meghallgatásra, és márciusban már költöztem is.
Mikor és milyen tagcserékre került sor, mik voltak a fontosabb pontok a zenekar eddigi életében?
Jon az egész bandát lecserélte 2008 és 2009 folyamán, most öten vagyunk négy helyett. A Davey Vorhes-szel való találkozás nagyon fontos esemény volt, mivel a High Speed GTO-ra készített videója világszerte a bandára irányította a figyelmet.
Mutasd be, kérlek a zenekar tagjait! Ki mióta játszik a hangszerén, mik a kedvenc bandáitok, kik voltak rátok a legnagyobb hatással?
Én vagyok a szólógitáros (Erik Kluiber), immár húsz éve gitározom. A kedvenc bandáim a klasszikus Metallica, a Megadeth és a Slayer. Mindhárom banda borzasztóan nagy hatással volt a játékomra.
Még csak a mostanában kétéves a csapat és máris egy nagy kiadónál vagytok. Elmesélnétek, hogyan sikerült ez?
Davey Vorhes High Speed GTO-ra készített videójának nagyon sokat köszönhetünk, és az eredeti felállás által rögzített 7 számos kislemez is hibátlan volt.
Nagyon retro, de igazán hangulatos, a zenét és (számomra úgy tűnik) a zenekar imidzsét is hűen tükröző borítót sikerült összehoznotok. Ez kinek az ötlete volt és ki volt a kivitelezője?
Azt hiszem, hogy az Earache Records ötlete volt az egész borító és ők is valósították meg.
A HSGTO megjelent már korábban bármilyen formátumban, vagy az Earache kiadásában került először nagyközönség elé?
Néhány házilag írt másolat létezett korábban, de tudtommal az Earache adta ki először az EP-t.
Melyik stúdióban vettétek fel az EP-t? Ki volt az anyag producere?
Nem tudom pontosan, hogy hol vették fel az EP-t, de azt tudom, hogy Ralph Patlan, az Over The Top producere felelt a keverésért.
A kiadói infolapon említésre kerül a Dave Lee Roth-os Van Halen, mint egyfajta zenei iránymutató. Jól érzem, hogy a régi énekes távoztával ez kicsit módosult és több teret kapott az újabb dalokban a metal?
Hát ja, én személy szerint sosem hallottam ki a Van Halen hatását, de az tuti, hogy az új album sokkal nyersebb, mint a High Speed GTO.
Ez minek köszönhető pontosan?
Wyatt hangja nagyon különbözik James Lunáétól. Értelemszerűen az eredeti felállás már semmilyen hatással nem volt a mostani dalírási folyamatra. Az Over The Topot szinte kizárólag Jon Leon írta. Chad és én járultunk még hozzá itt-ott néhány riffel.
Hogyan készülnek a dalaitok, kik nálatok a fő dalszerzők?
Jon teljesen kész dalokat hoz. Apróbb javítások előfordulhatnak, mikor a banda a saját értelmezése szerint formálja a dalokat. A gitárszólókat otthon írom, kivéve az Over the Top, a 40 Deuces és a White Wizzard szólóit, mert azokat Jon és Ralph Patlan írta, mivel e dalok felvételekor még nem voltam a bandában.
Amerikából leginkább metalcore és thrash bandákról jönnek át hozzánk újabb és újabb hírek. Ti sosem gondoltatok arra, hogy ezeknek a ma divatos irányvonalaknak a valamelyikét nyomjátok?
Néhány thrash bandát szeretek, de a metalcoreban nem vagyok otthon. Az első gimis bandám egy thrash zenekar volt. A White Wizzardban is vannak thrashes elemek itt-ott.
Milyen a rock/metal élet manapság Los Angelesben? Milyen bandák uralják a klubokat?
Az egyetlen Los Angeles-i banda, akinek igazi tábora van az a Steel Panther, ők minden hétfőn a Key Clubban játszanak.
Hamarosan érkezik az első komplett albumotok. Milyen címen és pontosan mikorra várható a megjelenése?
Az Over The Top február 23-án fog kijönni az Earache-nél.
Előzetesen mit árulnátok el róla az érdeklődőknek? Mire számítsanak a rajongók?
Az Over The Top nagyon különbözik a High Speed GTO-tól, egy sokkal változatosabb és nyersebb albumra lehet számítani.
Európai koncertekre, turnéra mikor lehet számítani?
December 17-én Londonban játszunk az Earache karácsonyi buliján. Az már biztos, hogy a Keep It True-n és a Metal Hammerfesten is ott leszünk, de európai turnénk még nincs lekötve.
Kivel, kikkel játszanátok együtt legszívesebben?
Az Iron Maidennel és a Judas Priesttel, nyilvánvaló okokból.

First, I would like to congratulate on the release of High Speed GTO, it’s a really catchy disc. If my informations are correct, you recorded it quite soon after forming the band. Please tell me the story of the band this far.
Erik – I joined White Wizzard as lead guitar player in March of 09. I don”t know the previous history of the band other than they don”t get along. Over the Top was recorded summer of 09 in Phoenix by Ralph Patlan (Megadeth, UFO, Schenker). Who formed it, where and how did you encounter each other.
Erik – I found out about White Wizzard through an ad on craigslist. I did my first audition through a youtube video in Jan, flew out from Detroit to LA for a live audition in Feb, and moved to LA in March of 09.
What kind of member changes took place, what were the most important things in the history of the band?
Erik – Jon replaced the entire band from 08-09. It’s a 5 piece now instead of a 4 piece. Meeting Davey Vorhes was important as the video he made for High Speed GTO got the band world wide attention.
Please introduce the members of the band. For how long have they been playing their instruments? Which are your favourite bands? Which of them had the greatest impact on you?
Erik – I play lead guitar (Erik Kluiber) I’ve been playing for 20 years. My favorite bands are classic Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. All 3 of those bands influenced me tremendously.
The band is around two years old and you are already at a great label. Can you tell me how did you achieve this?
Erik – Davey Vorhes directed an amazing video for High Speed Gto that gathered world wide attention. The 7 song ep the original band recorded was flawless as well.
Your cover is really retro and cool and it reflects the music and the image of the band, too. Who’s idea was it and who created it?
Erik – I believe Earache Records came up with and created the entire album concept.
Has High Speed GTO been released earlier in some form or it was it first released under the wings of Earache?
Erik – I think there were a few cdr copies floating around. Earache is the first real release of the EP that I’m aware of.
In which studio did you record the EP? Who was the producer?
Erik – I’m not sure where they recorded the ep, but I know that Ralph Patlan who produced Over the Top did the mixing.
On the label’s infosheet Van Halen from Dave Lee Roth is mentioned as a similar musical path. Am I right when I say that with the previous singer gone, this path is modified and in the new songs, metal got more space?
Erik – Yah, I personally never heard the Van Halen influence, but the new album Over the Top is much rawer than High Speed GTO.
What’s the reason behind this?
Erik – Wyatt has a much different voice than James Luna. Obviously, the old lineup had no influence on the writing process this time around. Over the Top was written almost exclusively by Jon Leon. Chad and I threw in a few riffs here and there.
How are your songs written, who are the songwriters?
Erik – Jon presents complete songs. There might be a few alterations once the band interprets them. I write the guitar solos at home. Jon and engineer Ralph Patlan did all guitar solos for Over the Top, 40 Deuces, and White Wizzard as I wasn”t in the band at the time those songs were recorded.
The main import from American music is thrash and metalcore. Have you ever considered playing one of these more popular genres?
Erik – I like some thrash, but I’m not into metal core. My first band in highschool was a thrash band. White Wizzard has some elements of thrash here and there.
By the way, what’s the rock/metal life in LA like right now? Which bands rule the clubs?
Erik – the only LA band that really has a following in LA is Steel Panther who plays every Monday at the Key Club.
Soon, your first complete album is out. What will its title be and what about the release date?
Erik – Over the Top will be released on Earache Records on Feb 23rd.
What would you tell about it before its release? What should the fans expect?
Erik – Over the Top is very different from High Speed Gto. Expect a rawer album. There is more diversity on Over the Top compared to High Speed Gto.
What about European gigs or tours, is there any chance?
Erik – We’re playing Earache Record’s Xmas party in London on December 17th. I know Keep it True and Metal Hammerfest have been confirmed, but no European tour is locked down as of yet.
Which bands would you like to share the stage with most?
Erik – Iron Maiden and Judas Priest for obvious reasons.
